Excellent.......2005-07-11
I had never heard of Oskar Fischinger until I came across his "Kreise", and was surprised that such a work had been conceived in 1933. It predates and anticipates today's synchronized light shows, abstract music videos, and even Winamp visualizations.
Nevertheless, Fischinger remains a relative unknown. Thankfully William Moritz's biography provides a great deal of information on Fischinger's life and artistic influences. It is rather short, but it makes up for this with generous color illustrations throughout, which are definitely worth the price of admission. A complete descriptive filmography and a collection of "statements" from people who knew Fischinger round out the book.
It's a good book (if not the only book) for learning more about Fischinger and his work.
Optical Poetry.......2004-11-27
This book is a labor of love, and the culmination of Dr. Moritz's 30+ years of research and work with Oskar's widow, Elfriede. It includes statements written by Oskar about his films; testimonials from several generations of filmmakers inspired by Fischinger; a detailed filmography; and extensive appendices. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Fischinger, or the history of animation.

Book Description
The Josquin Companion presents both the scholarly and general reader with the most complete and concentrated discussion ever published in English on the music of Josquin des Prez (c.1450-1521) - the greatest composer of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Not a standard, single-author life and works, the volume provides a basic survey of Josquin's music and of the many problems which attend it. Through a collaborative effort of distinguished scholars, it takes into account the most recent research on Josquin. Beginning with a summary of the latest developments in the composer's constantly-changing biography and a discussion of his stature as a great man then and now, the Companion continues with chapters considering all the compositional genres employed by Josquin and offers wide-ranging surveys as well as close studies of individual pieces. Further chapters explore both traditional and untraditional analytical perspectives on Josquin's music, and suggest new avenues of research. A Worklist, Bibliography, and Annotated Discography (the first since the advent of the compact disc and the concurrent explosion of early music recording) end the book. It is further enhanced by its own CD, containing pertinent selections specifically recorded for the Companion by The Clerks Group.

Deserves 5 stars for content, but the price . . . .......2007-01-26
This must be read by anyone more than casually interested in this composer, but Oxford's pricing means you may have to settle for a trip to the nearest university library. I recommend reading the chapter on Josquin in Gustave Reese's absolutely indispensable MUSIC IN THE RENAISSANCE as well as the lengthy entry and works-list on this composer in the NEW GROVE first, but this first full-length study in English goes into considerably more detail and is more up-to-date than either, offering a treasure-trove of information.
Amazing but pricy!.......2003-09-13
This book is a terrific resource for those wishing to study Josquin in depth. It is especially insightful in light of recent scholarship that shows that Josquin was not at Milan. I used it for research into the Missa Pange Lingua. I believe in the value of solid musical scholarship, but this book is extraordinarily cost prohibitive. Unfortunately, it is priced only for library consumption. (The one star deduction is for cost only)

Very good Book.......2007-08-20
I am always looking for an easy to read and understand chess book- John Nunn does an excellent job- I recommend this book for any one looking for further help-
Second Edition is Expanded not Revised.......2007-04-01
Notice this edition of Nunn's "Secrets of Practical Chess" is called a "New Enlarged Edition". No claim is made about revising, updating or improving exsisting material from the first edition. The [...]review of the new edition claims that the first 4 chapters are identical to the original. Only the chapters on Using a Computer and Chess Literature are expanded.
If you do not own the first edition the second is a must buy. Otherwise you can pass on the new enlarged edition.
Intelligent writing delivers the goods.......2005-10-13
The highlighted comments of Dr J Sarfati are well written - he is an excellent Amazon reviewer. I agree that John Nunn's book is a goldmine of useful tips, and includes many a remedy for bad habits. The great thing about Nunn's writing is that he does not have an agenda. Unlike, say, an author trying to sell you his book on a dubious opening variation. Nunn just tells it as it is.
The chapter on building an opening repertoire should be compulsory reading for anyone serious about improvement, or who wishes to better their competitive results. Keys lessons: a) never, ever, play the Latvian Gambit, and b) choose a sensible and sound opening repertoire.
GM Nunn devotes the first third of the book to the role of decision making (including the analysis tree thing) and examining why oversights happen. There follows the opening section, which mainly consists of that stern warning: do not be seduced by the lure of those off-beat lines. Unsound variations will do nothing for your long term improvement. The comes the middlegame section, dealing with good positions, bad positions, attack and defense.
I was surprised to find the endgame section equally fascinating. The final 50 or so pages feature all manner of practical situations, and cover a wide range of typical scenarios. You will never take a routine endgame for granted again after seeing these amazing examples.
I rate this the best book ever written for the competitive player.
Pragmatic advice = Dramatic Improvement.......2005-02-15
Although there are no quick-fix promises made, the always sensible Nunn advice and clear-cut writing will probably make this the most useful improvement book you will ever own. The section on openings and selecting an opening repertoire is required reading for anyone of tournament level. Famously Nunn demolishes the Latvian Gambit in one section (Books on Offbeat Openings).
Whilst that analysis in itself is of some importance, Nunn's main objective was to pound home an important point - an opening repertoire based on risky sidelines is in danger of being busted overnight. A well-written and well-focused book.
The expansion of chess counciousness........2005-01-04
After reading this book I had an epiphany.Nunn spoke about not allowing one mistake to effect another.Essentially I think he meant general tactical blunders.Nervertheless one night I was playing with fritz when a thunderbolt from the blue hit me.I allow one bad move to effect another due to perfectionistic tendencies. This concept of bad move can be expanded to bad plan.A example of this would be,on move 10 I have developed what at that time what I thought to be was a good plan.At move 20 it hit me like a ton of bricks that my initial idea was weak and flawed.Normally I would become upset with the game and virtually fall apart. I remembered Nunn and was able to make an objective adjustment in my thinking process. So my game isnt as good as I thought it was. Therefore I will change my evaluation in the position and change my plan to cope with the new existing situation on the board. This is a Quintessintial example of flexibility of thought.Live in the moment the tao of chess.Deal with the new situation at move 20 40 50 etc.Earlier mistakes are for the skittles board after one goes over there mistakes.Of corse other things are mentioned which really does not need to be repeated for this review.Nevertheless I felt this secret of practical chess to be of utmost importance to me personally. Therefore kudos to John Nunn and his book secrets in practical chess.
Book Description
In this follow-up to his highly successful book, "Secrets of Rook Endings" John Nunn turns his attention to endgames without pawns. These occur surprisingly often in practice and are extremely tactical in nature. This book unites man and machine in the searh for ultimate answers. The computer databases created by Ken Thompson, formerly of Bell Laboratories, can state with certainty the correct result of any position with five pieces or fewer. John Nunn has extracted the most important information from these databases and presented it in the form of guidelines and specific key positions, which can be more readily digested by the human mind. With most competitive games nowadays being played to a finish in a single session, this knowledge may prove invaluable over the board. Since the first edition of this book was published, the databases for many six-man endings have been created, resulting in some surprising and paradoxical discoveries. The coverage has therefore been expanded to include the most interesting features of these endings.
Customer Reviews:
Endgame Student.......2006-01-11
I would strongly recommend this book. Most of the more serious chess books discussing the endgame make for difficult reading and this is no exception. That's not meant as a criticism, just an observation. Having said that, I have made it a personal mission to solve the Q v. R endgame on Chessmaster and this book has the most detailed discussion of that particular endgame I could find. (It also contains R v. N, which is also in Chessmaster.) Indeed, whereas other books like Fundamental Chess Endings by Muller and Lamprecht or Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual might devote a page or two to that ending, Nunn devotes 30 pages. The book covers only 12 main endgames, but it covers them exceptionally well. For those endgames, I'd recommend this book over any other book I've seen. It has two additional chapters entitled "Other Five-Man Endings" and "Six-Man Endings" but these are nowhere near as thorough as the first twelve chapters.
Square-dance of 4 and/or 5 pieces. (Not pawn.).......2005-10-14
This is the second book or 3-volumn set that Dr. John Nunn annotates from Dr. Ken Thompson's 4- and 5-piece endgame database. As the title suggests there is no pawn in this study. This book is the most interesting one among all three. There are lots of piece permutations.
Unlike the Rook ending book, this one does not have the practical tips at the end of every sections. The reason is most of the presented positions are practical ones that could happen in real games, while the R ending contains many test and study positions. Nonetheless, after giving a short generalization of a position is "mostly" win or draw, Nunn provides us many standard set-ups to look for when we are the offensive or defensive ends. For examples: in the R vs. B ending, he categorizes the defending King position as: a) in the center, b) in good corner, c) in bad corner and d) on the edge of the board.
The first 3 sections cover the 4-piece endings, a major piece versus the lesser piece. (R vs. B, R vs. N, and Q vs. R.) The two simple set-ups, Q vs. B and Q vs. N, are not presented because they are "simple", straightforward and covered in other books. Curiously, against an expert player about 2 years ago, I got a Q vs. her N; I could not force the win! I did not know how to position the K and Q; her N-fork was always a threat.
The next 4 sections are the battles between the correspondent major pieces, where the strong side has the assistance of one minor piece. (Q vs. Q + B, Q vs. Q + N, R vs. R + B, and, R vs. R + N.)
The next 5 sections are where the Q tries to outshine the combinations of 2 less pieces. (Q vs. R + B, Q vs. R + N, Q vs. B + N, Q vs. 2B, and Q vs. 2N.) The first two are generally drawn unless the Q can force checkmate or win unprotected pieces early. In the last three, normally the Q can win rather easily unless the defending side can force some tempi and build a fortress immediately. It's good to memorize these set-ups in case of emergency.
The last thinly section covers two interesting endings. First is Q vs. 2 major pieces (Q vs. 2R, Q vs. Q + R, and Q vs. 2 Q.) The first type is usually drawn. In the last two, the weaker side could force stalemate if the stronger side is not careful. The next endgame type is the R vs. two pieces. (R vs. 2R, R vs. B + N, and R vs. 2B.) The 2R usually wins. The B + N combination sometimes could hold back the Q by building a fortress; therefore the R can win in only a very special case. On the defensive end, the R can always gives himself up for a minor piece to avoid any later regret. To end the book, Dr. Nunn gives a humorous position where both on the B's are on the same color, mutually protect each other. Usually, it means that the R can't take any B, but in this special case the R wins.

It is ironic that a 90-year-old story of courage and endurance should have lessons for the Internet Age-but it does! Anyone attempting to lead in the face of uncertainty and adversity will learn much from this tremendously engaging and compelling book.

The book uncovers 10 lessons complete with stirring examples from the Shackleton expedition, as well as contemporary business case studies of the strategies in action on what it takes to be a great leader. Readers learn how to:

Customer Reviews:
I heard Perkins speak, then bought the book..........2007-06-14
As a former Outward Bound instructor who loves adventure, I found this book riveting. As a business coach I know that learning occurs when we are on the edge, in a little less familiar place. This story supplements the narratives about Shackleton because Perkins takes the story and applies it to leadership. Hence, it becomes contemporary. I liked some of his points so much that I referenced him in my book. I strongly encourage you to read this book. Leading At The Edge.......2006-07-24
Perkins uses Shackleton's Antarctic expedition of the early 1900's to identify ten leadership strategies. These stategies have proven useful for me in both military and civilian business settings. Perkins uses real-life examples form the Shackleton expedition in Part One to identify the strategies. In Part Two he uses recent (from when the book was written) business example to demonstrate how these strategies can be applied. This is an easy read and the stories of the Shackleton expedition helped keep my focus on the people that we lead while keeping the ultimate goal in sight. The title of this book applies whether you are leading at the edge of the world, the edge of survival, or at the edge of competition.
"Fortitudine Vincimus"!
Simply Amazing.......2005-01-02
This book is a "must read" for everyone aspiring to become a leader. The different life and death situations that Shackleton and his men faced, and how they overcame the obstacles in their way, is an example for all to follow.
The book is written masterfully, allowing the reader to reflect on how different leadership techniques were applied and how to apply the techniques to the situations particular to the reader.
Outstanding Work!
Invaluable lessons for business or life!.......2004-12-15
A fantastic text based on an epic journey. The history of Shackleton's ill-fated expedition is a sharp contrast to the modern view which epitomizes personal liberty as the highest virtue.
This book features vignettes from an expedition faced with nearly insurmountable odds that highlight the difficult choices faced by Shackleton and his men. In the face of adversity, they managed to endure, though not without cost. Perhaps the most moving part of the narrative is knowing that, after he and a few of his men made it (barely) to the safety of a remote whaling, he insisted on mounting numerous rescue attempts for his other stranded crew-mates until they were successfully extracted.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether or not you are involved in business management. As a father, I found many of the examples and stories inspirational, and I have shared them with my children to teach them the virtues of perseverence and the responsibilities of leadership.
Leadership & Action.......2003-05-13
The author, Dennis N. T. Perkins, shows extraordinary insight in leadership with 10 clearly stated principles. Based in strong part on Shackelton's expedition, these 10 principles are not only clearly stated, but truly make a difference. It is obvious that Perkins understands leadership. The book is easy to read, but takes plenty of mental energy. This book should be read by any manager, and should be considered a classic.
