4 out of 5 stars Hercules and Goliath posters! .......2005-04-06

Spanning the years 1932 - 1970 "Mighty Movies" is a visual treat for movie lovers like myself. Packed from cover to cover with around 200 vintage posters of Biblical epics, swashbucklers and sword and sandal spectacles like HERCULES UNCHAINED and GOLIATH AND THE DRAGON. I couldn't help but dream about how wonderful it must have been to watch all these movies in the theater.

In addition to all the great posters Bassoff has added lots of information about the movies themselves. One interesting fact I learned was in 1912 the Astor Theatre in Manhattan raised it's ticket price from 15 cents to $1.50 for Guazzoni's now lost QUO VADIS!

Here are some of the posters I enjoyed the most:
NORTHWEST PASSAGE
SAMSON AND DELILAH
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
THE PRODIGAL
GOLIATH AND THE SINS OF BABYLON
GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES

Robert Burns: The Tinder Heart

This hard cover book encompasses every thought of the "ploughman poet." His eloquent words roll from your tongue so it is better to read aloud his verse in order to catch much of his meaning. If you choose to read silently, allow the words to envelop your imagination within your mind. Many a night I love to sit and read then think about his words. Thankfully, the editors put it into alphabetical order so that Robert Burns poetry turns into a mixture of his thoughts rather than his tender words of love in one section, his political philosophy in another and then just a romp of fun in another. His fierce Scottish loyalty resounds from each of his words in such poems as "Scots Wha Hae." Many people consider "Ae Fond Farewell" or "A Red, Red Rose" to be the most wonderful of Burns love prose but to me "Afton Water" speaks of his true love in life. Be sure to read "Tam O'Shanter: A Tale" aloud in order to feel the rhythm within this great piece of fun and poetic verse.

Have fun, enjoy but by all means, purchase this book and show it off proudly on a table by your favorite reading chair. It's too beautifully bound to be put on the shelf and catch dust!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Burns Book.......2007-03-03

This book is what I reach for before I go to sleep, have always loved poetry & tend to read when I seek solace. Love this Robert Burns book, very nicely done, reasonable price, if you have never given Burns a try & wish to expand your reading list, this would be an excellent addition. Also as a nice gift it is a kind & thoughtful book to share with others.

3 out of 5 stars no definitions.......2006-06-08

The other evaluators of this book must have read a different book! This is a beautiful, hardcover book with a vast assortment of Burns' poetry; however, there are no definitions in the margin. There is a glossary in the back, but I bought this book believing that the definitions were listed with each poem (thereby making them easier to read), and they are not.

I need Burns beside me as I live life, and this is a great one-volume collection of his greatest works in a convenient format. Glossed well; you won't have to use an index at the back of the book. Here's tae ye, Rabbie!

5 out of 5 stars Great! Brief definitions in margin facilitate understanding........1999-10-22

Robert Burns uses a lot of Scots words, but any word you don't understand is defined in this edition in the margin right alongside the poem. So reading is smooth and very enjoyable. A great introduction to Robert Burns, and a good companion to other volumes. "Cutty Sark" means skimpy petticoat!!

Book Description

Illustrated with sixty etchings and wood cuts, maps and facsimiles. The poetry and prose in the second volume brought us to the end of the Edinburgh period and to the eve of Burns's settlement at Ellisland. This present volume treats entirely of the Ellisland period. Burns is now a married man, which event he celebrates in his most jovial manner: I hae a wife o' my ain; I'll partake wi' naebody. 1 out of 5 stars Only Vol 3 - not the Complete Works.......2007-01-09

The title is very misleading - the Complete Works of Robert Burns - when actually it is only Vol 3 of the complete works. The book itself is interesting, but covers only the final third of his life works and is mainly his letters. What I wanted was, indeed, the Complete Works. For a paperback, and only one volume, it was very pricy. Now I have to go hunt down the other two volumes, which apparently Amazon do not have.

5 out of 5 stars A most beloved Burns.......2005-05-01

There are few poets more beloved than Burns. His lyrics and his songs were even in his lifetime celebrated and loved. They reflect his own passionate and perhaps often too loving nature. The story of the country Scots' boy whose writing fame led him to dissipation in Edinburgh is also the story of a great lover( His wife Jean Armour and Mary Campbell were the two most famous)
and celebrator of that love.
Many of his lines live in the everyday life and mind of English speakers everywhere. New Years Day is the day of his 'Auld Lang Syne' and most of us have known the wisdom given in his 'To a Mouse'( The best laid schemes o'mice an men, Gang aft agley, An lea'e us nought but grief an pain, For promised joy.)
Poetic anthologies of English verse unfailingly contain samples of his work. Among the most well- known are ( O My Luve is like a red, red rose, that's newly sprung in June: O my luve is like the melodie, That's sweetly played in tune.) and (Flow gently ,sweet Afton.Among thy green braes, Flow gently , I'll ing thee a song in thy praise; ).
The Scots may be difficult at times, but the poems are direct, simple , clear and powerful in feeling.

    Book Description

The humble ballad, defined in 1728 as "a song commonly sung up and down the streets," was widely used in elite literature in the eighteenth century and beyond. Authors ranging from John Gay to William Blake to Felicia Hemans incorporated the seemingly incongruous genre of the ballad into their work. Ballads were central to the Scottish Enlightenment's theorization of culture and nationality, to Shakespeare's canonization in the eighteenth century, and to the New Criticism's most influential work,Understanding Poetry. Just how and why did the ballad appeal to so many authors from the Restoration period to the end of the Romantic era and into the twentieth century?

Exploring the widespread breach of the wall that separated "high" and "low," Steve Newman challenges our current understanding of lyric poetry. He shows how the lesser lyric of the ballad changed lyric poetry as a whole and, in so doing, helped to transform literature from polite writing in general into the body of imaginative writing that became known as the English literary canon.

For Newman, the ballad's early lack of prestige actually increased its value for elite authors after 1660. Easily circulated and understood, ballads moved literature away from the exclusive domain of the courtly, while keeping it rooted in English history and culture. Indeed, elite authors felt freer to rewrite and reshape the common speech of the ballad. Newman also shows how the ballad allowed authors to access the "common" speech of the public sphere, while avoiding what they perceived as the unpalatable qualities of that same public's increasingly avaricious commercial society.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Burns's Bawdy Songs Now Available in Facsimile.......2000-10-15

Much of this volume of some eighty-five folk-lyrics on erotic themes is probably the work of the Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). It was privately printed c. 1799 under the auspices of the Crochallan Fencibles, an Edinburgh men's club to which Burns had been initiated in 1786 or 1787 by his publisher William Creech, a founder of the group. Some of the texts included are undoubtedly by other hands; but as the Fencibles surreptitiously published this as a tribute to Burns within a few years of his death, it is reasonable to assume that much or most of it is by the poet himself. The Fencibles have usually been viewed merely as a drinking club, fraternal and convivial. But recent research has emphasized their subversive Jacobite and Jacobin sympathies as well. When in Edinburgh, Burns enjoyed composing bawdy songs for the enjoyment of his "brothers" at the Fencibles, who regularly met in Dawnie Douglas's tavern in Anchor Close to sing bawdry together. After 1789, when he moved to Dumfries, Burns continued to compose bawdy songs (often, like "When Princes and Prelates" with a revolutionary subtext), mailing them to cronies like Robert Saughton, also a member of the Fencibles.

This volume contains the (often corrupt) text of some twenty songs that also exist in Burns's handwriting--material usually omitted because of its erotic content from popular editions of Burns, but included in the standard scholarly edition (Kinsley, Clarendon, 1968). At least twelve of these songs are there established as fully the work of the poet, with a further nine identified by Kinsley as collected and transcribed by him as curiosities.

It is the other sixty-five texts that make this rare _Merry Muses_ volume (there are only two known copies of the 1799 edition) an invaluable resource. The Thomas Cooper Library of the University of South Carolina acquired it when the great Burns editor G. Ross Roy, an emeritus professor at USC, donated his large collection of Burnsiana and Scottish literature to the USC library. Most Burns scholars (including Prof. Roy, who contributes a lucid separate pamphlet describing the complex history of the volume) see the non-authenticated texts in _The Merry Muses_ as Scottish folk erotica added by various members of the Fencibles, or perhaps collected by Burns (an avid preserver of folk traditions). But having looked carefully at the contents, I consider all but five or six of the songs to be either the work of Burns himself or pastiches in which Burns revises as frequently as he transcribes. My reason--based on contexts rather than texts, so not authoritative--is the emphasis on mutual consent. In his signed and authenticated songs, RB is notable for this emphasis on consensual sexuality. The erotic song tradition in Scottish folk literature is, by contrast, rife with cautionary tales of rape and incest, but there are only a few such songs in this collection.

The very existence of this book was denied for more than a century by Burns admirers who were embarrassed by its frank sexual content: this denial was easily enough accomplished with only two extant copies of the work, one of them in the private hands of the Earl of Rosebery! But it is time for admirers of the poet to consider the bawdy songs of Burns. They are definitely obscene: some texts use Scottish vernacular obscenities such as "mow," but others make plentiful use of standard English and the f-word. But as the scenarios (typically--there are exceptions) emphasize the mutual joys of adult consensual sex, I think the term pornography is not quite accurate. The imagery is sometimes gross and shocking, but an episode of "Sex in the City" is more spicy. These obscene song-lyrics (the names of the suggested tunes are specified, but no music is printed) are better read as telling artifacts of masculine (masculinist?) culture during the Age of Enlightenment than as embarrassments to Burns's Immortal Memory. The poet lived a short, painful life, enduring the daily symptoms of terminal heart disease from his teens. Love and liberty--sexual as well as political freedom--were the great concerns of his poetry. For Burns, the composition of poetry (and the sharing it with kindred spirits) were his anodynes for poverty, social oppression (Burns is British literature's only great peasant poet), personal unhappiness, and chronic poor health. Like it or not, the bawdy element in Burns is fundamental to understanding his views on language, poetry, and human liberation. There are two modern editions of _Merry Muses_, but the notes in both cases are marred by sexism and poor scholarship. This facsimile is expensive, but all the profits go to the USC library by Prof. Roy's generous agreement. If you're looking for pornography, you'll be disappointed. If you're looking to understand the total Robert Burns in Scottish cultural context--and to gain insight into the inner demons and drive behind his writng--you'll be surprised and enlightened.

5 out of 5 stars Faiths of Eberron.......2007-01-12

This book was an incredibly useful tool. It cleared up any question I had about "Eberron Faiths." I fully recommend it as one of the most useful titles for anyone running or playing an Eberron game.

4 out of 5 stars Good attention to detail.......2007-01-04

I do like how they filled in some of the huge gaping holes in Eberron's theology, but Eberron's Theology isn't the most interesting.

If you plan on running a lot of games with Eberron then I would recommend it to you.
Though for the other gamers that wish to play in Eberron there are some nice additions to the game that you might find interesting, but I will not say it is a must have.

              3 out of 5 stars So so.......2006-10-11

My first copy of this book was missing 18 pages. My second had two pages glued together. The editor missed a number of mistakes, mostly repeated half phrases and such. The "Dargon Below" was about where I reached my limit.

I liked the content that was there but it left me wanting more. My perspective on the Sovereign Host changed, I have a much better idea of how the Vassals would view the world and interact with the players, but I really wanted more legends and lore. If there is any book that should explain how the Shadow became separated from Aureon, shouldn't it be this one? And while I have a better idea of how the Silver Flame religion shapes the people of Thrane, I wanted to know how the ACTUAL silver flame that's burning in Flame Keep effects the place.

The descriptions of the church hierarchies and member names (like Cardinals and Vassals) was just enough detail for me to hang my own plot elements on.

I can't see the Lord of Blades as a religion, unless I take the option they presented of making the LoB an abstract entity. Otherwise what happens when a cleric becomes higher level than Blade himself? Likewise the Inspired church actually creating clerics.

I need to re-read the Druid sections. I can't buy the Children of Winter accepting and creating undead, or the Greensingers wanting to "manifest" all the other planes but spending all their time and devotion on just one. I can see people doing those things but I can't call them Druids. Still, reading that section put me in the mood to create some "dynamic clashes" for the Eldeen Reaches.

One of the gems that really made me think was the second paragraph of the "Areni and the Divine" side-bar under the Undying Court. That's a creation myth I can hang nearly all the other religions on. I want more of those!

There were a few points where I felt that the new content contradicted the ECS. For instance the ECS says Blood of Vol "believe that blood is the source of life and that undeath is the path to divinity" and makes it sound like becoming undead is a way to cheat death, but FoE says undead have made a sacrifice to serve and are pitied (because they have no blood) and have missed "the door to life everlasting". The ECS says Deathless are "strongly tied to the plane of Irian...the birthplace of all souls" but FoE says "the Areni claim no knowledge as to the origin of souls". More than once I felt like FoE drifted away from the themes I picked up in ECS.

Overall, FoE made me think, it gave me some ideas, but it wasn't up to the standard set in ECS.

              4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-09-28

This supplement, a guide to the most prominent faiths of Eberron, fulfills its promise almost to perfection. The core elements are expanded well and interestingly, with the strongest development coming in the form of explications of the ideologies behind the the various faiths. The book's only failing comes from not enough development of the lesser known religions, and as usual, from Wizards' mystifying need to add crunch where none needs be; the most egregious examples of this are in the numerous pages wasted on map key descriptions (this is a supplement on religion in Eberron, not a collection of one-off adventure locales) and in the bizarre inclusion of a couple pages of construct grafts at the end of the chapter on "Other Faiths" (how exactly does this material fit the theme of the book, guys?). If Wizards really wanted to divide the wordcount this thin, they should have split this book and its critically important content into two volumes, but I highly doubt we can expect to see a Faiths of Eberron II any time soon. Otherwise, this book is exceptionally well done, and the writing itself -- mechanics elements notwithstanding -- is very accomplished; so much so that I for one would have liked to have seen more. My gaming crew and I have enjoyed the work of these authors in the past, and we look forward to reading their upcoming collaborations -- Cityscape and Dragonmarked -- with eagerness.

2 out of 5 stars Faiths of Eberron fails to entertain, inform, or otherwise add to a great setting........2006-09-21

Faiths of Eberron presents additional details on the various religions of Khorvaire, from the Sovereign Host to individual druid sects. New feats, prestige classes, and magic items are found here alongside adventure locations and a broad overview of each religion. No matter what faith your character follows, there's something in this product for everyone.

Unfortunately, this is one of the most boring products I've ever read. The writing is wholely uninspiring, and otherwise interesting ideas are quickly drowned in technicalities that do little to flesh out the religion in an interesting way. Further, the information on the various faiths is vague/simplistic/unhelpful. This is a product that will spend four or five paragraphs explaining that one religion doesn't pray, all because there is a subsection about praying for each religion. Significant amounts of information is repeated from the Eberron Campaign Setting, more than is necessary to discuss the various religions.

Buffett, the Bard of Omaha, is a genuine American folk hero, if folk heroes are allowed to build fortunes worth upward of $15 billion. He's great at homespun metaphor, but behind those catchy phrases is a reservoir of financial acumen that's generally considered the best of his generation. For example, in an essay on CEO stock options, he writes, "Negotiating with one's self seldom produces a barroom brawl." This is his way of saying that an executive who can give himself compensation totally disproportionate to his performance surely will. There are uncountable gems of financial wisdom to be harvested from these essays, taken from the annual reports he writes for Berkshire Hathaway, his holding company. Just to pick one more, here's a now-famous line about those he competes with when making stock-market investments: "What could be more advantageous in an intellectual contest--whether it be chess, bridge, or stock selection--than to have opponents who have been taught that thinking is a waste of energy?"

While Buffett has a policy of seldom commenting on stocks he owns--he feels public pronouncements will only lead to the public's expectation of more public pronouncements, and he likes to keep his cards close to his vest--he loves to discuss the principles behind his investments. These come primarily from Ben Graham, under whom Buffett studied at Columbia University and for whom he worked in the 1950s. First among them is the idea that price is what you pay and value is what you get--and if you're a smart investor, the first will always be less than the second. In that sense, the value of the lessons learned from Buffett's Essays could be far greater than the book's price. --Lou Schuler

              Book Description

The definitive work concerning Warren Buffett and intelligent investment philosophy, this is a collection of Buffett's letters to the shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway written over the past few decades that together furnish an enormously valuable informal education. The letters distill in plain words all the basic principles of sound business practices. They are arranged and introduced by a leading apostle of the "value" school and noted author, Lawrence Cunningham. Here in one place are the priceless pearls of business and investment wisdom, woven into a delightful narrative on the major topics concerning both managers and investors. These timeless lessons are ever-more important in the current environment.

              5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-08-14

Lucid and brilliant, a clear lesson on capital allocation. The only objection would be the repeated content, but truthfully it helped the ideas sink in a bit.

Thank you for editing this collection Professor Cunningham.

5 out of 5 stars Real Wisdom at a Good Price.......2007-08-05

I work for a financial services company, and I'm subjected to corporate gobbledegook on a daily basis. Warren Buffett gets to the point. His explanations of financial transactions seem so effortless, I can't imagine how others get so confused and obtuse. Here's a mind worth delving in to, and this book lets you sit on the shoulder of a modern genius to see how he thinks. Good stuff.

These are the actual words penned by Buiffett. Not as dry as one would think, he's actually a wonderful writer. The Oracle of Omaha can turn a phrase and while parts of this are slow going, I enjoyed it throughly.

I heartily recommend this book for those desiring wealth. I also strongly recommend The Millionaire Mind by Tom Stanley. The Millionaire Mind
