5 out of 5 stars Great for out of town friends and family.......2004-06-10

Whenever acquaintances from outside the New York City area come in for a visit, they usually tell me: "Show me New York, but not the tourist traps." I tell them, "With pleasure." This book provides my people with an interesting activity which they heartily enjoy. "Manhattan on Film: Walking Tours of Hollywood's Fabled Front Lot" by Chuck Katz is a great concept and, for the most part, represents a wide range of films. I understand there will be omissions, and many of the sets have long since been demolished, but there is still plenty to choose from. And for us New Yorkers, takes a little bit of the tourism off our shoulders.

4 out of 5 stars Hollywood in Your Backyard.......2004-03-24

Manhattan on Film is a collection of thirteen walking tours that take you to New York City locations and sites used in some of Hollywood's most popular films. Each tour is set up by neighborhood and designed to take no more than two hours. Each section starts with a brief neighborhood description, has an easy-to-follow map, has clear transportation instructions to get you to your starting point, and includes concise directions that take you to each location. You can also take a quick peek at the movie index to find out where your favorite film has been shot.

Katz's book hits on all levels. General walking tour enthusiasts will find this guide a refreshing and excellent alternative to the standard, traditional guides. Tourists and visitors (Katz says that Israeli cabinet members are big fans of his book) to the city will get the feeling that they've tapped into a secret side of the city, somehow escaping the same old tourist itineraries. At the same time, ardent film fans will appreciate the trivia factoids and the concise capsules describing famous scenes that easily evoke an, "Oh yeah, I remember that!"

A wonderful find for any film fan, resident New Yorker, or visitor to the city.

5 out of 5 stars Manhattan on Film.......2001-03-02

Chuck Katz's Walking Tours is an enchanting way to see New York. It's fun, light and humorous. I was charmed and delighted with my tour. A past resident and current occasional visitor to New York, I relived some of my favorite movie scenes and felt a part of them at the same time. If you're a New Yorker, you'll never see the places you visit on the tour without feeling a little nostalgia. If you're a visitor, each time you see a New York movie scene, you'll relive your New York visit. It's really great fun! I highly recommend this clever, witty, well written, and entertaining book.

5 out of 5 stars A unique look at the city as movie set.......2000-04-25

The author has put together a wonderful collection of places in New York where famous movie scenes were filmed. The photos and other graphics are terrific, the writing is witty and to the point, and there are enough reminders about the scenes to jog your memory. This reviewer also appreciated the travel guide size of the book; easy to carry with you as you work your way from one movie memory to another.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Good Tool for Learning Tunes.......2007-09-01

This is a good tool for learning tunes, especially helpful for those who do not have an Irish uncle who can bring over his button box eery evening and teach you at your own pace. The addition of guitar accompaniment enhances this presentation over the prior book.

The tunes are played at a pace that the beginning player can absorb at one's own leisure. The inclusion of sheet music is helpful for those who need it, but sheet music reading is not required and you can also get "off paper" more quickly by putting your CD on "loop" and playing along.

A large number of tunes and commonly played ones, too. So if you ever decide to go out and play music with others at a sesiun, you will more likely know some that they are playing there.

A lot of folks like to play on their own at home in the evening, and this is a very nice "companion" that kind of personal enjoyment.

If you aren't able to get 'The Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tunebook' for some reason then this would be be a fine substitute, albeit at twice the price of the former. Like the 'Tunebook', this is a collection of mainly reels and jigs, with a few hornpipes, polkas and others. The staff size is quite small because two or three tunes are crammed on each page. So, if you don't mind paying twice the price for the same number of tunes stuffed onto a third of the number of pages get this book, otherwise get the 'Tunebook' by the same author.

Book Description

An old favorite--Mensa Math & Logic Puzzles--gets a brand-new look: it's now in color!
And the puzzles are fantastic: they're the kind of challenge found at the World Puzzle Championships, and they require no language to solve. For example, you are given a grid of dots that has some numbers (0, 1, 2, or 3) in them. You need to connect the dots in one continuous path so that each number is surrounded by that many lines. So a "3" means that three of the four sides around it must be connected. All the puzzles are similar abstract exercises, and all have unique solutions that can be reached using pure logic. They're difficult--and really satisfying exercise for your brain.

Customer Reviews:

This book is a workout for the mind. It covers many logic puzzle types, and by the time you're done with a set, you feel like you've mastered a new skill. I wish they'd put one of these out every year!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Another Goldratt Novel... Good but not Great.......2007-03-16

Goldratt takes us through he paces again, but this time not quite as ground breaking and informative as the Goal. Of course the Goal remains standard reading for all young managers in any sort of manufacturing environment, and the TOC is a baseline concept that they should wrap their mind around. This book is good and adds a little refinement on top of the previous books, but should definitely be down in the pile. Start with the Goal, and keep this book on the low priority / rainy day list.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and practical.......2006-10-24

Another Goldratt teaching novel that teaches his thinking processes in story format. Fun reading. Inspires trying to solve work process problems that are hard because the current reality has contradictions in it. Setting is far from most workplaces, but then so are spy novels. Read the story for fun, and then read Scheinkopf's Thinking for a Change: Putting the TOC Thinking Processes to Use to learn the methods.

5 out of 5 stars It's not luck.......2006-09-01

Great book! My first intention was not to buy this book. It was suggested to me. It ended up being very good. I'm glad that Amazon suggested it to me.
Thank you

2 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness.......2005-10-04

The Goal has some usefull stuff, the TOC and DBR. The Thinking Process is useless!

4 out of 5 stars It's not The Goal..........2005-09-30

... but it's alright!

You must have read The Goal before embrassing this one. Although useful for a better understanding of the whole Goldratt's TOC especially in marketing and distribution, this novelesque management book suffers a little from proseltism. The reverence for Jonah's figure, even when solving personal problems, it's a bit abusive...

Book Description

A gritty, passionate, behind-the-scenes portrait of a year in the life of Thoroughbred racing's working class, by a racetrack insider.

The great myth of horse racing is that the game is the regal and royal Sport of Kings. It isn't. Not by a long shot.

Anyone who doubts this need look no further than Suffolk Downs, a once-proud racecourse graced in its glory years by boisterous throngs and champions such as Seabiscuit. Now the blue-collar East Boston track is one of many that have fallen on hard times. These days "Sufferin' Downs" is where grizzled Thoroughbreds come to end their careers, hopeful young jockeys aspire against daunting odds to begin them, and diehard fans cheer, curse and gamble on the entire fascinating spectacle. These bit players are not just cogs of a single, struggling horse track. They are the unseen supporting cast for a $15 billion betting industry.

In fifteen years as a racing reporter and press box personality, T.D. Thornton gained access to remote corners of racetrack life off limits to the general public. He got to know the raucously Runyonesque characters and the quirky personalities of the horses; he learned the tricks of the trade from trainers, owners, and jockeys; he witnessed the tragedies and small triumphs of racing lives lived below the radar. One recent season, he finally decided to write it all down.

Not by a Long Shot is a deeply textured portrait of an industry where even the best in the business lose 75 percent of the time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A stroll on the back stretch.......2007-09-06

For someone who knows nothing about the racing industry this is an enlightening glimpse into the mechanics, personalities and stories that come together to create the excitement of the racing industry. The outsider may see this as the "sport of kings," with all the glamour we watch at the Kentucky Derby but this is a window into the toothless, hapless, shrewd, caring varied characters on the lower scale that keep the racing industry alive. Mr Thornton's style of writing is addictive, one gets caught up in his usage of words and his turns of phrase. A picture forms in one's mind and you can begin to watch the movie in your head.

5 out of 5 stars Just the Best.......2007-08-06

This is the first review I have written for an Amazon book. It is a great read written with such honesty. Hope there are more books from this author down the line.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love the track.......2007-05-23

A fantastic read on one track in particuar and the entire racing industry as a whole. An important and very enjoyable read for anyone who loves the track. Thornton covers it all, from the politicians down to the wackiest track degenerates. Highly recommended for anyone who has been bitten by the racetrack bug at some point in their life.

At some point racing is going to be gone for good. This book tells us all the great things, available nowhere else, that we're going to lose.

4 out of 5 stars The fascinating story of a struggling race track at the turn of a new century.......2007-05-08

Amid the glimmer and glitz, pomp and pageantry surrounding thoroughbred racing's famed Triple Crown it is very easy to forget that most of the folks who choose to make a living in the racing game toil in relative anonymity and many have a very difficult time just making ends meet. Author T.D. Thornton has been around racetracks for virtually all of his adult working life. "Not By A Long Shot: A Season At A Hard Luck Horse Track" is a story that Thornton felt really needed to be told. For only a tiny percentage of the horses, trainers and jockeys will ever see the big time. Yet without those who ply their trade at "mid-level" tracks like Suffolk Downs in Boston, Charles Town in West Virginia and Rockingham Park in New Hampshire, events like the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup simply could not happen. "Not By A Long Shot" takes a look at the current state of thoroughbred racing in this country. Years in the making, "Not By A Long Shot" chronicles the 2000 spring meet at Boston's Suffolk Downs, a once proud facility now struggling to merely survive. Those who follow the sport will certainly understand what T.D. Thornton is writing about. For the rest of us, this book proves to be a real eye opener.
In the early chapters of "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton spends some time reviewing the history of thoroughbred racing in these United States. In the 1930's and 1940's thoroughbred racing was at the peak of its popularity. Enormous crowds filled the grandstands on a daily basis at major tracks across the country. Thoroughbreds like "Seabiscuit", "Whirlaway", "Citation" and "War Admiral" were household names. In this era, thoroughbred racing was not just the sport of kings but the sport of the common man as well. With the advent of television racetrack operators balked at the idea of putting their product on TV. They felt that frequent exposure on TV would adversely affect attendance and the handles at their facilities. It was a major tactical mistake. In the meantime, the major professional team sports teams gladly offered their games to the new medium and the popularity of these sports increased exponentially. And as Thornton explains the racing industry would never fully recover. Then in the 1960's and 1970's thoroughbred racing faced more stiff new competition from new state sponsored lotteries that would further diminish the sport. And now the racing industry is reeling from the vigorous competition spawned by the opening of dozens of new casinos all across the nation. Indeed, the future of live horse racing seems to be hanging in the balance.
At various points throughout "Not By A Long Shot" T.D. Thornton introduces us to a number of the colorful charactors who make up the fabric of his beloved Suffolk Downs. Readers will come to appreciate just how difficult it is for most of these folks to eke out a decent living in this business and how dangerous the sport can be as well. Thornton tells the tragic tale of top jockey Rudy Baez who was paralyzed in a serious accident during a race at Suffolk in August of 1999. In an instant his career was over and his life changed forever. Thornton also introduces his readers to many of the "Sufferin' Downs" regulars. A motley crew to say the least! At the same time Thornton gets us all up to speed with some spicy racetrack slang. Although it has been many years since I have been to the races T.D. Thornton has succeeded in whetting my appetite. I hope to visit Suffolk Downs before the current meet ends.
I found "Not By A Long Shot" to be a thoroughly entertaining read from cover to cover. T.D. Thornton is a superb writer who is extremely passionate about his subject. An excellent choice for sports fans and general readers alike. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An Insider's View.......2007-04-04

I've grown up around horses, without really appreciating horse racing, except as the occasional spectator at big event races (or once or twice, as the owner of a former race horse). I found myself completely captured by the book -- not so much because I like horses, but because it brought together for me all of the reasons I worry about horse racing and yet want racing to survive because it is so much a part of the horse "world." Horses are symbols both of freedom and tragedy, as so clearly demnonstrated with this tale.

T.D. Thornton is a masterful writer who does not follow a formula. In some ways, his strong and elegant writing reminds me of another favorite writer, Tracy Kidder, as he lets the story unfold rather than forcing a snappy ending. While Publishers Weekly criticized "Not by a Long Shot" as perhaps not having a strong enough narrative line -- that was exactly what drew me in, because the story never felt contrived or fomulaic. The tale of Suffolk Downs and its cast of characters, both four footed and two (and a few whose legs no longer work) are fascinating. I both wanted to hurry to the end -- and dreaded getting to the end, because that would mean I would have to exit the stage where anything can happen, including an unexpected win from an unlikely pair or a blood chilling accident from a pair that try too hard. I deliberately refused to allow myself to look at the sporting news to see whether Suffolk Downs itself still survives today -- and I won't give away that outcome here.

I found myself eager to spend a day at my own local race track after reading this book, just to compare notes. This book is in the great tradition of memoirs, giving the reader an insider's view of a special place.

Thank you, T.D. Thornton! I'll be looking for your byline elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT AUSSIE FISHING HOLIDAY.......2000-11-22

.

This book won the "Picture Book of the Year" awarded by the Children's Book Council of Australia in 1997. It's easy to see why.

The beautiful water color illustrations accurately portray the area around the scenic seaside village of Lorne, located west of Melbourne Australia.

Elizabeth Honey is responsible for the pictures as well as the words in "Not a Nibble". It's rare to see great authorship and artistic talent so effectively combined. Her story although centred on our little hero Susie, will also have great appeal for boys. After all, the story pivots around that globally popular pastime of fishing.

To the non-Australian reader some of the fish names may seem strange. Overcoming that, is Elizabeth's portrayal of one of childhood's most enjoyable pastimes. The appeal of dangling a line off the end of a pier, must be a universal pleasure.

Susie together with Mum and Dad and three brothers have a seven-day camping holiday at Lorne. Susie is the most determined to catch a fish but she has the least luck. In fact she catches nothing! Getting teased by her brothers doesn't help. But Susie gets a special reward for her patience. While staring out to sea, almost ready to give up, she is the first to see a mother Southern Right Whale and her newborn calf.

This is a very rewarding book and will appeal to boys and girls of all ages.

Ever have one of those days? Like the kind where you find yourself selling garbage or hiking in the middle of someone's backyard? Well, Victoria Schmitz has had plenty. Call it a young heart or sheer stupidity, but it is obvious that she has had her fair share of bad luck! From sour romances to holiday blunders and chance happenings to elderly rivalries, Victoria shares her most personal life experiences. Her sarcastic tone mixed with her light-hearted nature makes for a hilariously intelligent first novel.

Whether it is fate, a naïve soul, bad choices, or all of the above, Victoria is living proof that life hardly ever goes according to plan. Rather than dwell on this unfortunate trail of incidents we call life, she laughs at them. Come along for the ride as she invites us to laugh -- with and at her!

      5 out of 5 stars HEY...Wha Happand!.......2004-03-29

You know when you meet someone whose trials and tribulations make you feel like you are OK in the grand scheme of things. Well Victoria Schmitz and her heaps of hilarious hijinks and antic dotes found in her book "If it's Not One Thing it's The Other" have actually managed to thrust me up a rung or two on my own internal "normalcy scale". I was thoroughly entertained for all 76 pages of this impressive first novel, which strikes a great balance of whit, humor, and of course exquisite insight into life's inevitable curveballs. I definitely feel that her upbeat and lighthearted approach to those odd days in one's life is a great way to cope. I know that I had a great time laughing at her for a large portion of the book and laughing at others, well... that's just good, down-home fun and I really think that is what she was trying to capture here. After thumbing through this 0.18" x 9.00" x 6.00" paperback, $10.95, steal of a book I totally felt like I knew the author and could relate to many of the stories. I would recommend this read to anyone who was ever awoken by a stranger with a golf club in a basement that's not their own. This book will definitely cue up the fact that others go through this as well; it's NOT just you. I know I'll be looking for the sequel.
