Few books of film criticism are as daring and controversial as Making Meaning. In the tradition of Terry Eagleton's Literary Theory: An Introduction and Fredric Jameson's The Political Unconscious, David Bordwell looks back at the work done in his field, summarizes its strengths, criticizes its weaknesses, and proposes a new point of departure. The result is an arresting overview of contemporary film theory that also exposes its shortcomings. Bordwell concludes that most film criticism and theory is tied to the idea of making meaning, unpacking the overt or hidden messages that lie within the movie. Prophesying that a new era of analysis is before us, Bordwell calls for film scholarship that will both complement and transcend mere interpretation.

    Book Description

David Bordwell's new book is at once a history of film criticism, an analysis of how critics interpret film, and a proposal for an alternative program for film studies. It is an anatomy of film criticism meant to reset the agenda for film scholarship. As such Making Meaning should be a landmark book, a focus for debate from which future film study will evolve.

Bordwell systematically maps different strategies for interpreting films and making meaning, illustrating his points with a vast array of examples from Western film criticism. Following an introductory chapter that sets out the terms and scope of the argument, Bordwell goes on to show how critical institutions constrain and contain the very practices they promote, and how the interpretation of texts has become a central preoccupation of the humanities. He gives lucid accounts of the development of film criticism in France, Britain, and the United States since World War II; analyzes this development through two important types of criticism, thematic-explicatory and symptomatic; and shows that both types, usually seen as antithetical, in fact have much in common. These diverse and even warring schools of criticism share conventional, rhetorical, and problem-solving techniques--a point that has broad-ranging implications for the way critics practice their art. The book concludes with a survey of the alternatives to criticism based on interpretation and, finally, with the proposal that a historical poetics of cinema offers the most fruitful framework for film analysis.

Contray to the comments posted by Lee Potchka, this book does not contain a picture of Hailie Selassie (autographed or otherwise) and it has NO chord break-downs or rhythms. And I have no idea what Potchka meant by "easy-to-stuff pinsize cut-outs and the cathedral-like layouts of otherwise impossible accordion progressions," lol. This book is a guide to the purchase, care and use of acoustic guitars, focusing primarily on their physical characteristics. Examples of topics covered include tips on buying a guitar, a thorough description of the differences between steel-stringed acoustics and classical (nylon-stringed) guitars illustrated with clearly labeled diagrams, and information on care, maintenance, and storage. It has a very useful glossary that doubles as an index, and includes many helpful illustrations. I would recommend it to anyone getting ready to buy their first guitar, especially someone who is unsure of what kind of guitar they want or what to look for in selecting one. Tuning is discussed, and there are some basic practice and playing tips, but this is not a book on how to play the guitar or what to play on it. I presume Potchka's review was meant to go with a different book, because the comments in it bear no resemblance to this one.

When I first opened up this book and discovered an autographed picture of Halie Selassie I was frankly shocked, but (and these are the little tidbits of trivia that make this book a fascinating read) believe it or not, Willie Nelson gave the African despot guitar lessons in the late 60's when they were both in Harar for the Lewd Thomas Festival. A terrific read with literally thousands of chord break-downs and hands-on rhythms for the beginner. A unique crash-course! Also, what I liked the best, was the the easy-to-stuff pinsize cut-outs and the cathedral-like layouts of otherwise impossible accordion progressions. If you own one book on your shelf, besides Robert Anton Wilson, this will be the pie for the goose. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Quick Victories/Opening Chess Traps at their best!.......2006-10-10

Hey, like to see the guy knocked out in the first round of a fight? Yes, because of the likely well set set up shot, but no because it is all over. Well, chess is not a spectator sport or is it? Well, put into a book of short games you will find this to be both entertaining and instructive - know what to avoid & know what to look for so you can get in that quick punch! I also recommend, "Winning Chess Traps: Tactics in the Opening" for another book of fast games, arranged by openings. You will enjoy these books, and learn both openings and tactical play at the same time!

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books on chess traps (and early blunders).......2006-09-09

"The Quickest Chess Victories of All Times" is a combination traps book and tactical blunders book. I must say, there are lots of absolutely horrible moves made that are quickly punished. This is the type of book that will help sharpen your tactics. A weakness is that it has very sparce notes to explain things and isn't like getting one of the more detailed trap books available that can help with learning openings at the same time - there are sometimes several games fit into one page. This book has both instructional and entertainment (your eyes will pop out sometimes when a master makes a horrible blunder!). Fun!

3 out of 5 stars Good for chess teachers.......2004-10-18

A good book for chess teachers. Why? Well, this book is full of players making horrible opening blunders, and getting quickly demolished for their mistakes! Each game in this book is suitable for a 10-25 minute lesson, and that's what I use it for.

To learn how to improve chess by learning what not to do, and then avoiding what not to do, is a surprisingly underrated way of improving your skill. This book fits squarely in that mode.

5 out of 5 stars I am the man from Silicon Valley with the review below........2003-05-17

Just a cross-reference, so that more people will be exposed to this great book.
    -----------------------------------------------------
    Original review:

OK. If I had to pick one chess reference book, it would be an opening encyclopedia (probably Nunn's) but this is the best in a different way. It's a book to refer to while you're trying to learn openings.

Many authors have suggested that the way to study an opening is first to walk through the main lines, then to play out some sample games to understand the themes and goals, then to learn the traps, and finally (if ever) to study the variations.

This book is the best reference for traps. In fact, it is the only satisfactory one, and for its uniqueness it deserves the MVB award.

There are a few other useful books of traps (Chernev's especially) but this one has advantages that set it apart:

    * Volume -- Over 2000 short games are included, not one over 13 moves. These are tournament games, mostly from this century, so the mistakes made are not the sorts of blunders you will find in Internet blitz chess, but rather subtle errors that you could easily make yourself. (Burgess mentions an interesting exception, noting that the old penalty for an illegal move was a king move, which forced horrible positions and often resignation.)

    * Breadth -- All reasonable openings are covered, including a few games for some dubious flank openings.

    * Ease of use -- The table of contents lists openings by name. The index is by move order. (There is no index of games or players, but who cares?) If you're studying a given opening, you go to that chapter. If you're studying a particular variation, you find the page in the index. For each variation, there is at least one complete game plus branches for other games within it.

    * Reliability -- Burgess went to great lengths, according to his introduction, to ensure that moves which receive question marks are truly mistakes and suggested alternatives are reasonable.

    * Insight -- The notes are excellent. Each chapter has a brief summary of the odds of an opening's difficulty. Transposing move-orders are usually mentioned. Some games have little anecdotes or historical connections. Whenever a game is resigned for less-than-obvious reasons (as most of these are) Burgess explains the mate threat or material loss to us patzers succinctly and precisely.

This is really a book of how NOT to play openings. It will complement any repertoire books and opening encyclopediae. I highly recommend it for your shelf, even to intermediate players (like me). You might find it entertaining. You will find it useful.

5 out of 5 stars ...What he said!.......2000-07-05

I don't want to plagiarize, so I'll just say the review below from "Reader in Silicon Valley" is spot-on. I agree with every word of why he recommends this book. The breadth is remarkable, the number of games and depth of analysis are both superb, and the book is well-laid out, with lots of clear, helpful diagrams. The author's own advice of how to use it is best: find the openings you most like to play and play over the games that use these openings (which are easy to locate in the book). Then play some games just for fun. As others have stated, these aren't blitz or coffeehouse or street games, they're all from tournaments played under tournament conditions (or what were cloeset to tournament conditions in 1650...a few of the games are old, but well worth replaying). This is the sort of book that makes one wonder "Why didn't someone do this before?" (The answer, of course, is that modern computer data bases make this concept more feasible than it would have been ten years ago. This book was clearly compiled from computer data bases, and the trees and many game comments came directly from not human analysis, but computer analysis, probably using some Chessbase product. No matter, the end results are superb.)

Praise for THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

"Jack Schwager simply writes the best books about trading I've ever read. These interviews always give me a lot to think about. If you like learning about traders and trading, you'll find that reading this book is time well spent." -Richard Dennis, President, The Dennis Trading Group, Inc.

"Jack Schwager's deep knowledge of the markets and his extensive network of personal contacts throughout the industry have set him apart as the definitive market chronicler of our age." -Ed Seykota

"Very interesting indeed!" -John Train, author of The Money Masters

"Successful trading demands longtime experience because it requires firsthand knowledge. If there is a shortcut to this requirement, however, it is in reading about the experiences of others. Jack Schwager's book provides that shortcut. If you find yourself sweating upon occasion as you read, then you're as close to the trading experience as you can get without actually doing it yourself." -Robert R. Prechter, Jr., editor, The Elliott Wave Theorist

    THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS

Some traders distinguish themselves from the herd. These supertraders make millions of dollars-sometimes in hours-and consistently outperform their peers.

As he did in his acclaimed national bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews a host of these supertraders, spectacular winners whose success occurs across a spectrum of financial markets. These traders use different methods, but they all share an edge. How do they do it? What separates them from the others? What can they teach the average trader or investor?

In The New Market Wizards, these wildly successful traders relate the financial strategies that have rocketed them to success, as well as the embarrassing losses that have proven them all too human.

Meet the Wizards of Wall Street:
    * Stan Druckenmiller, who, as manager of the Soros Quantum Fund, realized an average annual return of more than 38 percent on assets ranging between $2.0 and $3.5 billion
    * William Eckhardt, a mathematician who, in collaboration with trader Richard Dennis, selected and trained the now-legendary circle known as the Turtles
    * Bill Lipschutz, a former architect who, for eight years, was Salomon Brothers' largest and most successful currency trader
    * Blair Hull, a one-time blackjack player who began an options trading company with

Asking the questions that readers with an interest in the financial markets would love to pose to the financial superstars, and filled with candid appraisals, The New Market Wizards takes its place as a classic.

    5 out of 5 stars Great read..........2007-09-22

I am far from a great trader and definitely in the category of novice. My brother recommended I read this book and its predecessor. The knowledge I picked up from both books coupled with a lot of reading and research spawned by what I found in the book have allowed me to generate decent returns on investments that have been stagnant for about a year. Within a three week time period I was able to go from being in the hole 6% in unrealized gains to being up over 10% in unrealized gains. I have since realized those gains and re-invested them looking to turn some more profit.

So I would say this is definitely a worthwile read for those interested in finding out how the big investors/traders became who they are and trying to come up with your own methodology for not falling into some of the pitfalls the market holds for the novice investor.

This is one of the worst books on investing I've ever read. I read his first one from the library and loved it. This one stinks to high heaven. Grammatical errors, misspelled words are really tough to get past. I can see one or two, but...!!!!!

On top of that, the content is empty and very disappointing. If you're looking for a book similar to the first, forget it. This one does not measure up at all. If I could get my money back, I would in a second.

Newcomers to Jack Schwager's series on top traders, as well as fervent fans of his first two entries Market Wizards and The New Market Wizards, will find that Stock Market Wizards offers another revealing look at a wide spectrum of trading styles through the eyes of 15 extraordinarily successful individuals. Transcripts of incisive Q&A sessions between Schwager and traders--including Michael Lauer, Dana Galante, Alphonse "Buddy" Fletcher Jr., and Claudio Guazzoni--examine the ways each approaches their specialty, whether it be value stocks, mutual funds, short selling, options trading, or other market niches. After brief but interesting introductions that place the subjects' trading practices into perspective, Schwager coaxes from them penetrating observations on setting goals, finding opportunities, learning from mistakes, and operating on a day-to-day basis. While some participants refuse to divulge proprietary practices, and Anthony admits that many traders' activities hold little relevance to individual investors, the basic doctrines nonetheless contain nuggets of wisdom that can be applied by many nonprofessionals. And, in the final "Wizard Lessons" chapter, Schwager details the 65 overarching principles (such as Trade Your Personality, Be Willing to Take a Loss, and The Importance of Setting Goals) he culled from these extensive conversations. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

The third in the bestselling Market Wizards series, this time focusing on the barometer of the economy – the stock market.

It has been nearly a decade since the publication of the highly successful The New Market Wizards. The interim has witnessed the most dynamic bull market in US stock history, a collapse in commodity prices, dramatic failures in some of the world's leading hedge funds, the burst of the Internet bubble, a fall into recession and subsequent rumblings of recovery. Who have been the ଡrket wizardsߤuring this tumultuous financial period? How did some traders manage to significantly outperform a stockmarket that during its heyday moved virtually straight up?

This book will feature interviews with a variety of traders who achieved phenomenal financial success during the glory days of the Internet boom. In contrast with the first two Market Wizard books, which included traders from a broad financial spectrum – stocks, bonds, currencies and futures – this volume will focus on traders in the stockmarket.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read...great for traders at all levels.......2007-07-02

It really doesn't matter at what level and style that you trade at, I think you'll find this an interesting read. Most likely you won't use the specific tips provided in the book, but advice about what mentality and behavior it takes to be a successful trader. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful!.......2007-06-20

This book was hard to put down....offering great insight and backgrounds on the various traders interviewed for the book. The author did a great job of showcasing each traders strengths and weaknesses...pulling enough inforamtion and details out of each interview so as to be helpful but not boring!

5 out of 5 stars Real market insights of real market pros.......2007-01-17

Kokop put it perfectly. You have to be able to read between the lines and read the interviews as they were said and extract the insights in principles and guidelines that are successful.

Granted that each professional trader mentioned can't expel EVERY trading secret or methodology, you can take alot of the experience and wisdom gleened from these top traders by not only saving yourself all of the time and money necessary to acquire such wisdom and knowledge, but also by analyzing the particular styles of each trader and see how it either compliments or contrasts against your own style.

Trading is both a science and an art. Investing same thing. The difference between the top traders and those of us who have bowed out lies in the interpretations they have made based on historical facts and patterns over time. Once you understand these interpretations and apply them to today's market, you will definietly be better versed in riding the tides and avoiding major mistakes that you might have made had you otherwise not been exposed to this professional wisdom.

Take it for what it's worth, evaluate it on your own merits, use your own criteria, and I can almost guarrantee (99%) that you will improve your trades and limit your drawdowns as they are called. (there is jargon in any discipline)

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and entertaining.......2006-04-23

A natural continuation in the outstanding series that derives so much valuable coaching from America's most noteworthy market speculators. (I wish there were an "options wizards" book.)

This volume focuses on stock trading. As an aspiring daytrader, I wish there was more in the way of intraday-trader interviews. There really was only one, and that guy traded S&P futures contracts, so it was about trading the entire market as a whole rather than individual equities. There exists a community of stock daytraders who work from their home office, some of whom make over $1 million per year very steadily. Too bad none of those guys were interviewed - hey, maybe another book?

Most of the traders interviewed were money managers and/or long-term position traders. Still, it's a great read that is chock full of thought-provocing content just like all the books in this hopefully not-yet-complete series.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding tactics of successful traders.......2006-03-08

This new edition interviewed 13 markets wizards including sole-traders work at home office to someone employs more than 100 traders. The common thing among them is their ability to achieve superior return (average over 100% per annum) over a long period of time usually over 5 to 6 years.

They are willing to share their trading methods & strategies for the readers. Although some refuse to disclose their trading systems, the reader can still benefit from learning their logic of thinking.

However, in this 2nd edition of the book, the writer deleted 2 market wizards from the 1st edition. I don't know the reason of it but for those want to read all 15 wizards, they are reminded to find the 1st edition to read.
