3 out of 5 stars Turned off by the errors........2006-05-01

While I was browsing in our local bookstore, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book. For some reason I am fascinated by lists of the greatest movies whether the list made by American Film Institute, Roger Ebert or the different publications and magazines who made their own "definitive" lists.

The packaging as well as the design and format of the book were impressive. It was simple but organized and nicely printed. Too bad just like some of the reviewers already pointed out, there were quite a number of misinformation and typographical error in the book. I find it really unacceptable for a book to have misspelled words, how about a little proofreading next time? And there were also quite a number of wrong information that ranges from the description of a particular scene, wrong entries regarding Academy Award nominations, as well as the section the book had on the different rankings of other "greatest movie lists". That was a major turnoff!

Regarding the list, they made some interesting choices. Some of the usual suspects like The Silence of the Lambs, High Noon, To Kill a Mockingbird, West Side Story, The Philadelphia Story, Rebel Without a Cause, and Mister Smith Goes to Washington were left out. There were some pleasant not so obvious entries like Thelma and Louise, American Beauty, LA Confidential, and Strangers on a Train. But they also had some unconventional entries that I don't necessarily agree with like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Saving Private Ryan, Airplane, and Spartacus to name a few. If they were going for some unconventional choices, I hope they had included Twelve Angry Men, The Age of Innocence, Seven, The Color Purple, Mister Roberts etc.

Even though I made some rants regarding the accuracy of the information, I still think this is a great read. Just don't use it as a resource book.

Grade: B

3 out of 5 stars Good but error ridden.......2004-10-25

One mistake comes when they review the theatrical film MASH. Thet credit Larry Gelbart with writing it. Wrong! Talented Gelbart wrote the first four seasons of the tv show MASH. Not the movie MASH! Other mistakes too. But giantly written and nicely illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Both a film guide and a handsome coffee table addition.......2004-06-06

Narrow the film world to the top 101 choices of all times, pack in the color shots from these recommended films, and include cast and credits and critical quotes about the movie and you have a pictorial representation of the greats in Gail Kinn and Jim Piazza's Four-Star Movies which will serve as both a film guide and a handsome coffee table addition. Four-Star Movies is quite simply as fine a reference as it is a visual ad for quality classic films.

4 out of 5 stars Varied selection, but informative and a good starting point........2004-01-09

I noticed this book in Barnes & Noble the other day and being a movie buff and obsessed with "Top 100" lists. I will first of all say that I pay attention to the American Film Institute's list of Top 100 movies and kind of compared the selections here with thos that the AFI came up with. While about 35 of the selections are the same, Kinn and Piazza came up with some rather interesting choices as to their Top 101 movies of all time.

First of all, the book needs to be error-checked. I found several errors, though not glaring, they were ther. Maybe the fact that I know a lot about movies made them more obvious, as I'm sure other books/magazines, etc. have had errors and I have passed over them. All that aside, the movies (and there are indeed 101 of them) are all good. In fact, there's some I haven't seen and after reading the book, I'm going out to check the films out, after all; that's what this is, a starting point to see some of the greatest movies out there.

I can't say I agreed with all of their choices, but all of the films have had some sort of critical acclaim. Each movie gets three pages of pictures, information about the cast and crew and even what the prominent critics have said about the movie (one featured moreso than others is the very negative Paulene Kael, what a sad life she leads if she can't get any pleasure out of these films). Some information about the background of the movie is printed as well and what the authors say about the movie (in little cartooish bubbles, no less).

I didn't have any major problems with the book, I don't feel it's any sort of definitive guide, per se as they didn't pick any Charlie Chaplin movies, no Buster Keaton movies and some are on the list that I don't think should be there (even as happy as I was to see "Airplane!" as #101, I can think of plenty others that should be in that spot). If you're into film and movies and, most importantly, ranking of them, then this is for you. What the authors are trying to accomplish by this book, is for the films to be seen. Granted, we know that The Godfather is good (yet they combined The Godfather and The Godfather Part II as one movie for their #1 pick), but I might just have to go check out "Funny Face" as they picked it as one of their favorites. Still, notable classics like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" aren't on there!

In any case, it's a good book and very attractive looking. Heck, if people see it at your coffee table at a party, you can make them think you're a film critic! I'd recommend this book to any film buff.

4 out of 5 stars Every Movie Freak's Dream.......2003-12-25

First off let me say that i LOVE movies. i love reading about movies and whatnot. I was shopping @ Barnes & Noble looking for a Xmas gift for myself. yes, i buy myself presents don't we all. Then I came across this book. being a movie freak i picked it up and thumbed through it and bought it. What more can a movie lover want? This book has lots of info about the movies listed. From The Godfather to the Seven Samurai and more. It's unbelievable. Complete with director information, a behind-the-scenes look, information about the cast, great pics portraying the most memorable scenes, couple of quotes, results @ the box office, awards nominated for,and a plot summary. It's great. Sure it doesnt have some of the best movies in my opinion but it's fabulous. You can learn soo much about movies. I recommend it to anyone who loves movies that they read about them. Perfect gift for any occasion. Buy it and you wont regret it.

Book Description

A revised edition of the only book to explore the unique brilliance of director Tim Burton's work, including a new chapter on the making of Sleepy Hollow.

Still only in his thirties, Tim Burton has established himself in the past fifteen years as one of the great visionaries of film. With the Batman films, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, and, most recently, Sleepy Hollow, he has continually broken new ground both visually and thematically, exploring the dark anguish--as well as the dark humor--that animates many of his characters while also creating a densely textured, sometimes bizarre look specific to each film.

In Burton on Burton, Burton talks to Mark Salisbury about his training as an animator at Disney, the importance of design in his films, and the recurring themes present in his work. In this revised edition, he also discusses the influence of 1950s sci-fi and 1970s disaster films on Mars Attacks! as well as how he conceived his highly stylized approach to the content and setting of Sleepy Hollow, his acclaimed retelling of the Washington Irving story that stars Johnny Depp, perhaps the actor most identified with Burton's work. Enhanced by stills from the films, storyboards, and illustrations of set designs for all his major films, Burton on Burton provides insights and information about the man and his work, throwing light on both his unique artistic vision and on the extraordinary films that have been the result.

4 out of 5 stars Where does he get those wonderful toys?.......2005-09-01

"Burton on Burton" acts more like an interview than it does an autobiography. Most of it is written by Burton but it sounds like a transcript of a television special. However, the book is very thorough and presents many interesting anecdotes concerning the inspiration for and production of all of Tim's films up to Sleepy Hollow. They even go so far as to comment on the progres they made on Superman Lives! which was to star Nicholas Cage and be written by Kevin Smith.

For the majority of the book, an italicized summary of a series of events, written by Salisbury, will be followed by a page or two by Burton on that same topic. This is then followed by another paragraph, or so, by Salisbury on a following event and so on and so forth.

Johnny Depp's Prologue, though shorter than expected, is very well written and provides a very interesting look at the actor's view of Burton before he met him, during Edward Scissorhands, after, and then during Ed Wood (and possibly Sleepy Hollow, I can't quite remember). He has some quite nice things to say about Tim and provides an eloquent intro for both the casual Tim fan and the die-hard Burtonite.

Definetly a must for all interested in Tim's work.

3 out of 5 stars A good editorial job.......2005-07-11

Being the Tim Burton fan I am, when I heard of this book I ordered it immediately. The book opens with a foreword written by Johnny Depp (which is more of a `I love Tim because he saved my career' speech) that is told from Johnny's perspective on how he met and admires Tim.

The editorial job Mark Salisbury has made for this book is a very good one. The chapters are divided by movie titles, starting on the first chapter with his childhood in Burbank.

This is basically a compilation of notes, interviews and chats with Tim Burton with notations from the editor. Even though the chapters are named after the movies and are accommodated in chronological order, every chapter covers the period of time in which the movie was being made, so for instance, in the `Mars Attacks' chapter we get to read how close Burton was to start filming a new Superman film with a script written by Kevin Smith.

Everything Burton has done until `Sleepy Hollow' is reviewed and told here, his involvement in other projects, his book (`The melancholy death of oyster boy') and even TV shows (`Family dog' and `Beetlejuice')

For a Tim Burton fan this might not be a very necessary item (a fan should know all this things), however, I enjoyed all the anecdotes and unknown facts presented here, the level of detail given by the editor definitely gives you another vision of how Tim works, in the interviews and chats with him you get to see why is he considered as the genius he indeed is.

Lola Ferrari, John Frankenheimer, Rosemary Clooney, Billy Fury and many more. The big names featured run from Bogart and Cagney to Sinatra to Valentino. 4 out of 5 stars Very helpful, but I'm still clueless.......2006-07-07

Yes, this book is a great help if you want to find out about your favorite stars, and the lesser stars, too. It even had Joan Marsh, I think. But if I recollect,no June Knight. I wanted to find out more about her, even if she didn't make a lot of movies. I've watched some of them: Take a Chance, Wake Up and Dream, Broadway Melody of 1936 (My favorite), Lilac Domino. But she wsn't in the book, I think. I wanted to find out more, so I was dissapointed. Still, the book helped me a whole lot, and some of the obituaries were fascinating. It's a great gude to classic stars, so go ahead and buy it. (P.S. Does anyone know what happened to Redheads on Parade with Dixie Lee and John Boles? I can't find it... is it lost? I can't find Ladies Must Love either... HEEEEEEELLLPPP MEEEEEEEEE!I heard that 'redheads' sucked anyway...)

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not outstanding.......2006-01-08

Sort of an encyclopedic text on movie obits and mini-bios, with a typical Brit left-leaning approach (read the write up on Ronald Reagan and that becomes obvious.) Many (US) actors you would expect to see are, rather curiously, not listed - and there are many (mostly Brit and European) you've never heard of. Some of the material doesn't agree with more extensive (and presumably, extensively researched) biographies on some of the subjects. The author also seems to devote as much text to sexual preferences and affairs (rather a bit heavy on the gay emphasis) as to the movies the actors appeared in. Then again, what else would you write about in a book of obituaries? Lots of tidbits that make good party conversation. A decent casual read (or scan). In other words, a library loaner. (This is the 3rd edition - 2005)

3 out of 5 stars Eccentric choices, but still useful and interesting.......2006-01-04

Although the film industry is primarily Hollywood-based, this book is useful in that it contains a healthy number of obits for British actors and actresses from the 1930s-60s (Felix Aylmer, Bernard Bresslaw) that most Americans have never heard of. The book's subtitle is "A Book of Movie Obituaries", and, yes, all the big names are in here: Monroe, Brando (a particularly lengthy article that could have been trimmed a bit: the adventures of his pet raccoon are as long on the entry on Roy Rogers), etc. But it's not just actors. Directors and producers are included. Pauline Kael, the film critic, gets an entry, as does Keiko the whale from FREE WILLIE (Lassie does not, but Rin Tin Tin does). Ronald Reagan is here, though if he had not been president, one wonders if he would have qualified. Murder, suicide, and scandal appear quite a lot, and sometimes it seems as if any connection to film will do if it will provide a "sexy" entry. Does John Lennon really qualify as a movie star? And Larry Linville (from M*A*S*H) seems to have been included just so that his various personal scandals could be detailed. Still, the author takes pains to clear Fatty Arbuckle's reputation. Mel Blanc, who provided the voice for Bugs Bunny and a host of cartoon characters, and in doing so changed the way cartoons were recorded (among other things) gets 13 lines, while Tex Avery, who directed many cartoons, gets a page and a half (most of which merely list the cartoon's names and dates).

5 out of 5 stars Fade to Black.......2005-06-12

I picked this book up in my local library and was hooked from the get go. It took a year or two for me actually buy it, but Im so glad that now I can pick it up, pick a page at random and still find something that could be sad, shocking,or even heart warming. It contains a wealth of imformation about all aspects of hollywood: the actors, producers, directors. If you are interested in this sort of thing, I highly recommend that you get this. This is a book that no film buff should ever be without.

    5 out of 5 stars Fab compilation.......2004-09-07

A great film book....buy it, read it, treasure it and you will keep referring to it every time an old film appears on telly!

BEWARE! As I was thumbing through the pages of this dictionary, I happened upon a list of the Presidents of the United States and their respective wives. I noticed that the list ended at Jimmy Carter. No Reagan, Bush, Clinton or W! Went to see when the book was originally published and saw that it was first released in 1979. Re-released in 2003 & then in 2006. I wonder if Bantam just released the whole entire dictionary "un-updated" since 1979. Who knows what else needs updating in this book. Didn't think a respected company like Bantam would do such a thing, put out outdated info.

I used this book for an MBA finance class but I am not keeping it as a reference. I felt it was convoluted and badly organized. It was difficult to look up subjects using the index when you wanted to just crack the book and find a formula or look for something specific. Since that's what I would do if I kept the book as a reference, the value for me is not there. I'm looking for a different book that is better organized and easier to understand for my reference book.

4 out of 5 stars This is a review of only the CD - i.e., Excel model.......2006-03-28

Let me say that I like the McKinsey model and use it a lot to value certain companies. Overall, I found that the Results section of the model really helped me understand the detailed nuances of the McKinsey model, especially given that the book itself is sometimes vague.

I gave the CD product 4 stars, instead of 5 stars, because I felt that:

    1) The PDF instructional manual on using the model is woefully inadequate.
    2) There were a few serious errors in the model.
    3) The model took the easy way out on a lot of difficult valuation items.

    1. The PDF manual is woefully inadequate. Reading it, you think the model is self-explanatory, but it really isn't. You have to really study the numbers to understand what assumptions the model wants you to make. In this regard, the book is marginally helpful, the examples in the book is slightly more helpful. In many cases, I had to turn to other valuation texts to figure out a few things.

    2. The model is for the most part, error-free. But I did catch two calculation errors that I will share, so that others can avoid the pain. First, in the Forecast Drivers tab, there is a data row called Capex. It looks back at the optional Capital Expenditure line as an off-balance sheet item in 'Historical Data.' This is inconsistent with the book's data driven approach and specification that CapEx = change in Net PPE + Depreciation. You may want to recorrect the Capex formula to specify this. Why the model asks us to manually specify the Capital Expenditures in Historical Data, I have no idea.

Another error I saw is in the Results tab. In the Ratios section, there is one called 'Enterprise value / EBITA'. If you look at the formula, it points to EBIT. You need to correct this by having it point to Reported EBITA.

    3. I think the model takes the easy way out on a lot of the most difficult items. For example, the book advocates treatment of R&D as a capitalized asset, and yet the model excludes this entirely. The book advocates dealing with the market value of debt, but the model just incorporates the book value of debt. The model leaves as an entry item the value of the lease as a balance sheet item, when it you could easily just as well incorporate extensions to model this. This is the same for options, convertible debt, customer receivables, unutilized/discontinued assets, etc.

Basically, the book is aggressive in advocating a firm estimation of operational value, NOA value, and Debt/DE claims, but the model is much less ambitious.

This does not make the model useless. It's a great data-driven model. It just requires the user to build sophisticated extensions to deal with the most complicated parts. At the same time, this is no cheap model. They are probably making lots of money on it. I would have expected the folks at McKinsey to provide extensions to handle the most complicated aspects of valuation, in addition to the core items.
