Book Description
To call John Waters a cultural icon is almost insulting. This is after all a man who's entire career has been dedicated to the explosion of mainstream culture. But nonethless, from his earliest films he has been the center of controversy, acclaim, revilement, and reverence. He is the director of the notorious Pink Flamingos (in which the 300 pound transvestite Divine snacks on poodle poop) and Female Trouble (in which Divine as a man--with really nasty skidmarks on his shorts--rapes himself as a woman) as well as the crossover smash Hairspray (which introduced Ricki Lake to the world) and Serial Mom (in which Kathleen Turner offed Patty Hearst with a white pump.) From the days when the press wouldn't return his phone calls to the present, promoting his new films on network morning shows, and giving commentary on NPR, CNN, TNT, and The Sundance Channel, Waters has consistently been the outrageous voice of avant garde cinema. Critic Robrt Pela, examines Waters's life and impact on our culture in this book which is both a biography of Waters, and a remarkable, often hilarious, always illuminating look at his films, their impact, and the not to be believed cult of Waters fans.
The Films of John Waters: Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Polyester, Hairspray, Cry Baby, Serial Mom, Pecker, and Cecil B. Demented.

A light read that offers nothing new to the seasoned John Waters fan.......2006-01-22
While "Filthy: The Weird World of John Waters" is servicable as a brief overview of John Waters' career, it really doesn't offer anything one couldn't learn by reading Waters' "Shock Value" and "Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters", Frances Milstead's "My Son Divine", or even by watching Steve Yeager's great documentary Divine Trash, all of which are vastly superior to this book. In fact, most of the quotes in "Filthy" are taken from those other works, implying that the author hasn't actually come into contact with any of the people involved with John Waters' films (or as fans like to call them, Dreamlanders). The book begins with a concise look at Waters' childhood and travels through the making of his films, all but skipping over his latter period works like Serial Mom and Cecil B. Demented. Unfortunately, the chapters aren't laid out very well and the film anecdotes are interrupted by idiotic stories like an unnecessary and disrespectful segment where the author supposedly channels Divine through a psychic, or mean-spirited descriptions of a few Waters fans told through the eyes of a man who clearly isn't as big of a fan as he makes himself out to be.
Another unpropitious aspect of "Filthy" is that the author makes one too many mistakes throughout the text, either with facts or with plot descriptions. These errors may be considered minor to the casual Waters fan, but will absolutely ruin the reading experience for John Waters fanatics by prompting them to take what the author says with a grain of salt. For example, Pela states that Jean Hill has no lines in Polyester. Anyone who has seen the film, and enjoys it as much as I do, knows that this is not true. Her scene is one of the funniest moments in the film, as she spews out insults a mile a minute to a passing car full of teenagers.
In addition, one can easily tell which films Pela doesn't care much for because he nearly eschews them completely. The passage about Serial Mom is less than a page, which is disappointing because it is the best film from Waters' post-Polyester days. It's also sad when what seems like half of the book is comprised of a filmography with cast and crew lists, plot synopses, dialogue, and other assorted facts that are either repeated from earlier chapters or could (and should) have been placed elsewhere in the book.
What is good about "Filthy"? It is well-written and is pretty comprehensive in outlining how these films were made, in a cramped sort of way. The chapters on Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Polyester were thorough and the chapter about the author's visit to Baltimore was mildly amusing. There were a few quotes from Waters, Divine, Mink Stole, and others, that I had never read before and a couple of facts here and there that enlightened me to a point. I suppose "Filthy" would be a good guide for people who know little or nothing about John Waters and his films, but it is obvious that Pela has no first-hand experience speaking with the people behind these films. The chapters about the fans and about Pela contacting Divine beyond the grave--not to mention the bloated filmography at the end of the book--are simply filler. The author has taken all of this information from other works of reference and condensed it into one compact resource, which may be fine for some, but leave others like me begging for more substance.
"Isn't there a law or something" (quote from Rex Reed).......2003-10-19
The book "Filthy" is for all the die-hard John Waters fans out there, and you know who you are...
Author Robrt Pela begins his book with a glimpse into the mind of the five year-old John Waters. Forget the typical childhood icons of the Easter bunny and Father Christmas, for it seems that little John Waters dreamed of car crashes and roller coaster accidents. It's really no wonder that Waters grew up to be the greatest cult film director in the world. After a brief glimpse into the twisted mind of Waters at 5, Pela then treks to Baltimore in an attempt to find the sort of characters who inhabit a typical Waters film.
Pela describes Waters's association with Divine--how they met, and how the Dreamlanders formed, and charts the course of Waters's career--film-by-film--with reactions to each film from various critics.
Pela visits a medium who has communication with many 'relocated' famous persons. The session between the medium and Divine is priceless. One of the very best chapters covers "the cult of John"--and my favourite part concerns a fan named Suki who only admits guests into her home based on quotes from John Waters films. Pela also interviews a fan who claims that Waters gets all of his ideas from a cat.
One very handy chapter covered themes in the films--including perceptions of suburbia, the family, and "the prowling pervert." Pela includes a section of "filmic influences," and an extremely detailed filmography. "Filthy" is written with wry humour throughout, and it is an easy read. I recommend the book to all Waters fans--everywhere--displacedhuman
Perfect introduction to the world of John Waters.......2003-01-18
Before reading this book, I knew little to nothing about John Waters. I'd only seen two of his films, Pecker and Cry-Baby, and I enjoyed both. One day I was shopping at my local bookstore when I noticed a announcement for a reading of this book by its author. I decided to attend. I'm glad I did. Not only did I get a couple of autographed copies, but I became introduced to a whole new world of trashy films.
I am a person of patterns. I like order. The way this book is set up chronologically really appeals to me. Robrt Pela did a great job setting up a description of each Waters project, along with a background on each of the players and Mr. Waters himself. I had no idea how disgusting John Waters really was (and continues to be). And how willing he was to put it all on film. In a trashy way, that appeals to me. Can't be perfect all the time.
The interviews with the bizarre Waters fans were well done. One would have to be pretty brave to converse with some of these folks. I liked how these interviews were set in-between the rest of the back story on Waters and his camp. I enjoy Robrt's sassy approach to his over anticipated introduction to Baltimore, and how at every turn he was disappointed that it wasn't more trashy.
My two favorite chapters are six and ten. I like six because it is nothing but quotes about one tiny scene. And ten because its the, "guide to recurring imagery and motifs in Johns Waters film." In this chapter, all the work has been done for the viewer. What could be better?
The filmography at the end is one of the best I have ever seen. I am constantly seeing and reading about movies. So to be able to read one as thorough as this one was, was a pleasant surprise. It was the perfect introduction to Waters world.
Well done Mr. Pela :)
Delightful!.......2002-09-16
In Filthy, Robrt Pela brings many things to life for the John Waters fan including some outrageously funny and far out fans! Baltimore itself comes to life throughout the book as Pela spins the tales of movie making history. But the most brilliant and hilarious resurrection Pela manages to pull off is that of Divine in Chapter Three.
The themes and motifs chapter and the filmography chapter were packed full of odd bits of trivia that were entertaining and fascinating. The book is informative yes, but incredibly funny! And how else could you, SHOULD you write about John Waters and his movies?
Waters himself said, "I pride myself on the fact that my work has no socially redeeming value." Maybe he's right, but he's become a movie icon and pop culture hero to many people nonetheless and Robrt Pela does a good job of explaining why that is in Filthy: The Weird World of John Waters.
The Adventures of Robrt Pela.......2002-09-12
There are things about Robrt Pela's book that I really like. For instance, I enjoyed his accounting of his first and aparently only trip to Baltimore. Without knowing it, Pela steps on the toes of nearly every fan who has fun in John's world. Pela missed out on the fun. It took John Waters a lifetime to fall in love with Charm City's characters, so much so that he escaped the suburbs to join them, film them, and present them to the rest of us as a loving parent, showing off his children. As a man who makes his living reviewing theater, Pela's approach is understandable. I guess I like the book because John liked it and who am I to argue with that? I recommend reading it as a guide for the novice, the curious, the uninitiated.

Book Description
This rock ’n’ roll Angela’s Ashes begins in County Wexford, Ireland, in the late 1950s, a now unrecognizable, priest-fearing backwater suffocating in superstition and strangled by sexual fevers. After an escape to the Bronx, Larry finds himself, like a musical Zelig, side by side with the Ramones and Blondie at CBGBs; the brothers McCourt, Lester Bangs, and Nick Tosches at The Bells of Hell; the Guinness soaked regulars of Paddy Reilly’s; Cyndi Lauper while she ascends and burns; Joe Strummer, Rick Ocasek, Neil Young, and Shane McGowan. The shootings at the Academy and the tragic death of soundman Johnny Byrne punctuate the revels and excesses and presage the gloom cast by 9/11 and the loss of Father Mychal Judge and so many friends. Green Suede Shoes remembers three decades of a lost New York, and celebrates the music and song in which it now lives.

A wonderful read! .......2005-10-10
This is a delightful book! Larry Kirwan has a wonderful way with the English language. I swear he could write the ingredients in a box of cereal and make it a joy to read. He has a real knack for sharing experiences with a sense of humor and a lack of pretentiousness. I'm buying a second copy to give as a gift- I won't be parting with MY copy (I got it autographed). This book is a great read & and a refreshing, insightful look at modern America and the New York music scene.
Well done.......2005-06-23
I can only speak from the perspective of a fan of Black 47 who saw them a bit in their early years at Paddy's and someone who has most of their music. Green Suede Shoes is an extremely entertaining memoir by Larry Kirwan, the lead singer and driving force behind the band. The book covers his early years as a rocker/rebel/socialist/republican finding himself as a young man Ireland, to his journey to New York where he becomes a musician and playright, and then to the founding of Black 47, the capstone of his musical career. In between there are stories of loves lost, and lots more of alcohol consumed, and lots of colorful characters along the way, including some well known characters in the annals of music and New York City. Kirwan is the real deal: he and his bandmates are committed to their music and their fans, and that bond has made them "New York's House Band" for fifteen years; they respond to requests shouted out, to e-mails sent, and mingle with the crowd after the show. That passion comes across in the book. The story also involves his relationship with his parents and touches on the universal immigrant experience of never being able to go home again.
Certainly for any fan of Black 47, or even someone who is just familiar with their music but shares the New York Irish American experience, this is a great read; it rekindles interest in their music, but speaks to an era through the eyes and experiences of one of New York's all time great artists.
Good solid book.......2005-06-04
The book as a biography, has a solid enough premise and just the right amount of appealing grit to the cover, that I would have picked it up off the book shelves even if I'd never heard of the band, Black47.
It's reads easy and pleasant, like a letter from an old friend letting you know what they've been up to. Smart but not "over your head" intellectual, poignant yet witty.
Mr. Kirwan's writting style I liken to Eric Burdon's in his book,
"I used to be an Animal but I'm all right now".
That book has been on my shelf for years, it's all dog eared and the pages are held to the binding by scotch tape and rubber bands.I can easily see Green Suede Shoes right beside it in years to come.
The CD Elvis Murphy's Green Suede Shoes is good but not necessary to enjoy the book,
so well written, it speaks for itself.
Green Suede Shoes.......2005-04-21
This is such a superb work of literature that one can come to it from a number of different angles and find a wealth information and emotion. Whether one is a devotee of Larry Kirwan's life's work, or a follower of Black 47 music, or simply an Irish-American - or any-American - here one will find a work of literature that is honest, bold and sensitive. Like much of Larry Kirwan and Black 47's work, parents can share it with their own children, and children should share it with their parents. My personal arrival at this memoir was from being a devoted follower of Black 47's music, and there was much in here for me to learn. I strongly suggest obtaining the companion Black 47 CD to enhance the pleasure that this book has to offer.
Great Irish-American Rock n Roll Memoir.......2005-03-16
In his latest book, Larry Kirwin details the events of his life from growing up in sexually suppressed and religiously repressive Wexford, Ireland to becoming a playwright and rock musician in New York City in this moving, entertaining and informative memoir.
Filled with great and sometime hilarious stories of the many characters of his life, this book is hard to put down. In addition to slap your knees funny accounts such as when Larry and his uncle, a Catholic priest, venture into Northern Ireland with the purpose of converting the Rev. Ian Paisley, there are also very moving accounts of friends and relationships that have been lost. His accounts of witnessing the events of September 11 first hand will bring tears to the eyes of even the most jaded reader.
This book is of course a must for any Black 47 fan, as it provides deep insight into many favorite Black 47 songs. However, even for a casual fan or anyone who is interested in the music business, as it were, Green Suede Shoes provides an unique persepctive into the every day life of a rock and roll veteran, and done with much more sensitivity and lyricism than most run of the mill rock biographies you will find.

Not just for Easter... Hop these into your cart........2001-04-21
When these arrived in the mail... I just smiled. These Old-Time Bunny Rabbit Stickers edited by Maggie Kate have many uses. They are vintage type designs with soft coloring to enhance a gift card or use for many creative projects. Only 2 have Easter greetings on them. A few others incorporate eggs into the sticker; but, those could be for spring or flower projects.
The five designs on the front of the cover can also be used by cutting them out for a card or scrapbook project. I am a frugal rabbit. *Wink*
5 of the designs use 2 rabbits (Mr. and Mrs.)... fun to use for any scrapbook project with a "couple photo" for an anniversary or holiday. Nice to add the 2 rabbits sticker on the back of a card envelope you are sending to a couple. There is one with a little boy and girl (cupie doll's) each holding a bunny... that is so cute. The one with a Mommy Rabbit dressed in a long dress and apron holding a baby rabbit and a candle... (like she is putting the baby to bed); could be used for a new baby gift card or new baby scrapbook page.
The one with the bunny holding a sprinkling can and another with a rabbit eating lettuce is perfect to add to a gift card for your favorite gardener. Or, make your own gift basket with Amazon's terrific selection of garden books, a few fun gifts from Amazon's Outdoor shop, and use the stickers to embellish clear cellophane wrapping around the basket. As a gardener myself... the perfect gift. *Smile*
This little honey of a sticker sure has possibilities for the creative person... Many for me as I live in Rabbit Flat, Kentucky. *Wink*
Whether you enjoy decorating envelopes for special cards you send; or like to do home projects with paper or furniture decoupage projects... I bet there is a special project these would be great fun to use... Right?
Hop on over to your shopping cart and buy yourself a little treat. You deserve them... *Smile*

Practical Advice from the King of Sales.......2007-06-07
No matter what you do, no matter what career you may participate in, you are a salesperson. And if you want to do your job better, even as a housewife or stay-at-home dad, you need to read this book. Zig Ziglar's homespun wisdom, laid-back storytelling and down-home humor make this not only a easy read, but a must have! His words of wisdom about not just paying attention to what you say but how you say it makes this book worth the price by itself. And if you don't think you are a salesperson, think again. After you read this book, you will know you are.
Classic sales book w lots of great ideas!.......2007-02-24
In general, I am a fan of Zig Ziglar in that he is model for making money in an ethical fashion. In addition to his business books, he has also written books on raising positive children in a negative world, having a good marriage and other topics that serve a large audience.
Some of his material ranks with the best out there. This book is excellent and something that should be on every salespersons shelf. However, some of the material comes across to me as somewhat manipulative. I don't know if that is because of how it is written or if he really believes that it isn't.
On the other hand, Zig Ziglar is a master communicator and he's the only person I ever knew who got the best of the "SIXTY MINUTES" news show team. In one scene, they say how much of what you do in terms of motivation really lasts and has lasting value. Without missing beat, Zig Ziglar replied, "taking a bath isn't permanent either, you need to do it everyday are you suggesting that this isn't necessary and useful either." A brilliant and accurate response in my opinion!
Anyway, despite my reservations about some of the techniques and communication styles discussed, this book is loaded with excellent ideas for closing a sale. Communication strategies that are eventually embodied in good sales people. I wouldn't hesitate to pick this book up and take what you need from it.
Zig's book is the all time classic.......2006-05-21
Easy reading, funny, motivational and packed with powerful strategies that will take your sales career to a new level. Read and reread Zig's Secrets and you'll become a top closer too.
Also recommend Tom Hopkins classic 'How To Master The Art of Selling' Tead anad apply both and break through that six figure income easily.
What you need to know about sales.......2006-05-16
This book contains what every salesperson should know about sales. There are not reasons for not getting sales, you just didn't get past the objection. This book puts things in a whole new light. I highly recommmend it.

Best There Is.......2007-07-26
Over the last four years, I have purchased over a dozen copies of this book, in addition to the 12-disk CD seminar series based on the book. It is absolutely the best book on the market for new sales people, as well as those in sales for years. We have 12 sales offices in the state of Florida and there are copies of the book and a set of the CDs in every office. Our sales managers use them all the time to add a training component to their sales meetings.

Easy and fun read with an emphasis on Sales Professionalism.......2004-01-03

Use Your Prospect's Objections to Make it Easy to Buy.......2001-06-08
When I first read this book, last month, I was drawn towards it because I couldn't find Maxwell Maltz's books on selling. And, I remember reviewing this book, thinking that I had not heard objections from my prospects, yet, by the time I read page 304, of this 400 page book, I created a notebook with 35 pages of notes, each begins with specific objections that I have heard.
I remember asking myself, "Are you closing one sale after another?" And the answer was "no."
As I read this book for the second time, I am so excited about how I am filling up those pages with very specific, tailored responses to those objections, ones which have led me to close some sales. I keep telling myself, at this point to not make another sales call, until I have read this book 4 times, but because I am learning so much, it is natural for me to make some sort of sales call, everywhere I go. And in most cases, I am gathering information on the person, more information than they probably realize that I am gathering. But it helps me to be in rapport, as I show them that they need my services.
There are some parts in this book where I have read the objections, and examples of how to respond, not react to the objections, and I had said to myself, "I could never do that. It seems somehow wrong." Then, as I read this book for the second time, I am not only adopting what seemed uncomfortable, but I am definitely putting my charming spin on the dialogues.
Long before reading this book, I had read, "Think and Grow Rich," 13 times. And I kept telling myself, so how do I sell what I am doing, to the right people, everytime I make a sales call. And, although each read of "Think and Grow Rich," has added value to me, "Secrets of Closing the Sale," is very specific, and empowering. ...
I am eternally grateful for this book, as I envision the difference that it will have on all aspects of my life.
5 steps to succesful selling.......2000-04-14
full of great easy to use ideas on just what the title says.a good educational guide for the beginner to the pro salesman.

Sales bible.......2002-02-28
This book is worth much more than I paid. Mr. Ziglag demonstrated his experience of selling as a salesman by telling stories. It is fun when I read this thick book, although it takes time (2 weeks) to complete this book. His experience was so exciting I am thinking of switching my career from high tech to sales. He is definitely the master of sales. Maybe he is right, the best career is in sales. From there, one can establish his own business and become rich.
Just get on with it!!.......2001-02-14
I respect mr. ziglar's work. I also understand that a scathing review will NOT affect him in the slightest. He's in that position where it doesn't affect him anymore. However, I have to say that this book leans more toward the FRUSTRATING then anything. I'd more recommend Network Marketing for Dummies if you want info on actual TECHNIQUES right away!
That's what I was expecting when I purchased this book. I wanted to read HOW TOs and DO THIS and the basic phsychology beneath selling...FROM THE START! However, I'm stuck with repetitive one-liners and dragging anecdotes; most of which were covered in NM4 DUMMIES!
Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind a success story here and there; you'll find them in NM4 Dummies, but they are LABELED as such ("true stories")! If you don't want to read them, you don't have to! However, we aren't given that luxury in Secrets. Instead you have to "go fish" until you find something that really does it for you; or in my case, haven't already heard.
I understand that mr. ziglar has a wealth of knowledge in this field and I'm really interested in tapping into that knowledge, but it seems like getting through this book is as tough as "reaching the top" in marketing!
It would have really been more helpful if he'd have just provided us with our reason for buying instead of making us hunt for them.
Terrific.......2000-06-01
I found this book very insightful! It taught me how to rise to the top and the tools to get where I wanted to be. I love it and would tell everyone to read it!:)
