Book Description
Krzystof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy earned him the deserved reputation as "one of the world's premier film-makers' (Independent). In these films, based on the colors of the French flag and the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity--the three ideals of the French Revolution--Kieslowski has crafted three parables of contemporary existence. In Blue, Julie loses her child and husband in a car crash. In order to shield herself from the intensity of her grief, she strips away all remnants of her former life. This attempt is doomed to failure as music inexorably brings her back to a purpose in life. In White, Karol, a Polish hairdresser, is divorced and abandoned by his beautiful French wife and finds himself destitute on the Paris streets. He meets a fellow Pole, who ingeniously smuggles him back to Warsaw in a suitcase. Working on the black market, he soon rises to the top of Poland's emerging capitalist class. Still obsessively haunted by the image of his wife, Karol sets out to make her pay the price for her betrayal. The third and final part of the trilogy, Red, explores a strange, tentative relationship that gradualy grows between a beautiful young model and an embittered, retired judge. It is through the wisdom of her innocence that he finds the courage to engage with life again. Kieslowski brings the trilogy to a close with an event that weaves the disaparte threads into a seamless work of art.
Customer Reviews:
Three colors, three emotions.......2004-05-06
Cinematic genius Krzystof Kieslowski wrote and directed his own films, including the famed Three Colors Trilogy, made up of "White" ("Blanc"), "Red" ("Rouge") and "Blue" ("Bleu"). Taking the three concepts behind the French flag (liberty, equality and fraternity), Kieslowski created a colorful, emotional masterwork.
In "Blue," Julie loses her composer husband and her young daughter in a horrible car crash. Enveloped in her grief, she leaves her country mansion and takes a small apartment in Paris. But the haunting memory of her husband's music -- and the love of his former coworker -- keep drawing her back to her old life.
In "White," Polish immigrant (and born loser) Karol Karol is divorced by his sexy, ruthless wife Dominique. She takes all his money, his home, sleeps around and rubs it in his face, and leaves him penniless in the street. But Karol turns the tables on his beautiful Dominique when he becomes a rich man, and begins to spin an elaborate plot against her.
In "Red," the warm-hearted model Valentine accidently runs over a pregnant German shepherd. She takes the dog to its owner, but finds that he's a cold-hearted, callous ex-judge who uses a radio to spy on his neighbors. Valentine's disgust prompts the judge to turn himself in, and a strange friendship is struck between the embittered old man and the idealistic model... one that will change both their lives.
Obviously, reading the scripts for the Three Colors Trilogy can't quite recreate the experience of actually watching the film. The characters -- especially Julie and Valentine -- don't seem as rich without Juliette Binoche and Irene Jacob. And what words can recreate the swell of shimmering violins whenever Julie fades out? But Kieslowski's screenplays hint at the splendor and grandeur of his visions for these films. He brings the words to life in a way that few screenwriters can, and his descriptions of the characters and how they look, act, feel is phenomenal.
The Three Colors Trilogy is a modern classic of cinema, with its haunting characters and beautiful direction. So check out the wonderful screenplays that launched those films. Beautiful, heartfelt.
No question about it -- pick up this book!.......2000-04-19
This book is a screenplay of Kieslowski's famous movie trilogy. The films are amazing, and the book is no less terrific. It has three great, interweaving stories, all great read by themselves but a masterpiece when read together. This is one book I will read over and over again, and so will anyone else interested in a great script or story.

Book Description
Olivier Messiaen is widely revered as a great 20th-century composer. His distinctive music was born of his fascination with experimental modes, complex rhythms, metallic sonorities, and above all, bird songs. In these conversations, Messiaen talks candidly about his sources of inspiration, musical methods, and aesthetic views.
Customer Reviews:
Messiaen in his own words, works almost like a great autobiography.......2005-10-19
OLIVIER MESSIAEN: Music and Color, a book-length interview conducted by Claude Samuel, is the closest thing we have to an autobiography of the late French composer of deeply religious music. Samuel, a friend of the composer for three decades, set down with Messiaen in 1986 to discuss his career, philosophy, musical techniques, travels, and thoughts about contemporary music.
His youth and first love of birds is covered, as well as the various adventures he had through life searching new bird-watching (and bird-listening) opportunities. Tens of pages are dedicated to how he perceived sound and colour, as he experienced synasthesia, and his rhythmic innovations. As Messiaen was nearing the end of his life, the interview deals at length with generations after Messiaen's own. The composer is full of praise for Boulez and Xenakis and his younger wife Yvonne Loriod, but his most effusive praise is reserved for George Benjamin, one of his last students (whose career doesn't seem to have taken off quite as much as Messiaen expected). The book decades over 40 pages to "Saint Francois d'Assisi", Messiaen's opera of epic proportions premiered in 1983. Messiaen seems to hold this as his most important work, and it's a pity that nowadays it is almost forgotten while "lesser" works like "Turangalila-symphonie" and the Quatuor are frequently performed.
I learned a little bit more about certain works by Messiaen by reading this interview, and a lot more about the man Messiaen and what he felt was his mission in life. Worth reading for fans of the great composer.
Most informative.......2000-07-23
I find this book the definitive source of information about the personal views of Olivier Messiaen. Claude Samuel seems to be well aquainted with Messiaens music and poses interesting and thought-provoking questions to the maestro. The book contains passages about bird-song and greek poetry wich are quite fascinating for a layman. Also quite curious are some of Messiaens personal opinions on some of the most important composers in history. There is enough facts about Messiaens music to satisfy even those who are allready familiar with his works. The book is written in an understandable manner, yet deep enough for musicians and scholars to get a lot out of it.
Extremely informative.......2000-07-22
This book is the definitive source of information about Messiaens personal views and opinions. Claude Samuel, the interwiever, is apparently quite familiar with Messiaens works and sets intelligent and thought-provoking questions to the maestro. Messiaen talks about his compositional techniques in an understandable manner, yet deep enough to satisfy the need of professional musicians as well. Delightful information is also given about Messiaens pupils and peers: Boulez, Xenakis and Stockhausen. Also somewhat surprising are his (often quite cruel) personal opinions about some composers who normally are considered to be some of the most influential in history. Also for a non-ornithologer there is a fascinating passage about bird-song and its influence and application to Messiaens music. I deeply recommend this book to everyone even remotely interested in one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century.

A Spell Is Better than a Thousand Words
Every mystic library reserves a place for this single potent volume of arcane lore. It's packed with ways to customize sorcerer and wizard characters, including:
New feats, spells, and magic items.
New prestige classes, including the dragon disciple, fatespinner, and pale master.
Information about special organizations such as the Broken Wands and the Arcane Order.
Maps of a mages' guildhall and a home that a sorcerer and a wizard share.
Tome and Blood is indispensable to players and Dungeon Masters who want to add a new dimension to sorcerers and wizards.
To use this accessory, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player's Handbook, the
Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual. A player needs only the Player's Handbook.

cheese for the hero.......2003-11-28
Wizards must have for D&D
Pretty Good.......2003-10-09
well I got tome and blood for my birthday and I was looking through and I found some alright prestige classes. after a while I read a little bit farther in the prestige class section and found the Dragon Disiple. Since I am a sorcerer I was Amazed. It is literally the best Persige Class is the entire book. after thati look at the spells and I found the lesser acid orbs. they are like magic missle except a bit better.(at least i thin they are better. all in all i think this is a pretty good book.
A nice supplement.......2003-09-16
"Tome and Blood" is a fairly good supplement with a wide variety of useful feat, interesting prestige classes, and a couple of good spells. Some of the prestige classes, "The Acolyte of the Flesh" and the "Alienist" for example, would be hard pressed to be useful for a player character but would be nice NPC's.
I was slightly disappointed at the variety of schools, lots of innovation for necromancy, but the other schools, particularly illusion seemed to get short handed.
Also, compared to some of the d20 licensee products like Fantasy Flight Games's "Spells and Spellcraft" or Malhavoc Press's "Eldritch Might" series, this was pretty expensive for the amount of information given.
Great Metamagic, Good Spells, OK PrCs.......2003-04-08
This is probably the guidebook I use most, since I play a spellcaster in my current 3e campaign. I recommend this book if for no other reasons than to upgrade the type of feats you can draw on as a Wizard or Sorcerer and open up a number of new avenues your mage can explore. I really appreciate the metamagic feats, particularly energy admixture and substitution, which give a battle mage new tools to take on the numerous meanies with resistance to specific energies, and scult spell, which allows you to move beyond the circular blast of a standard fireball and into some very exciting alternatives. Among the new spells, the Orb and Lesser Orb spells are a solid choice for low- to mid-level offensive attacks. I had some difficulty with the PrCs, which struck me as being of limited value. Without a DM who tailors his campaign to the inclusion of the elements needed to tap the capabilities offered, many of them would be counterproductive for a player to take. However, if you have a DM who will work with you, there's some very interesting campaign arcs that can be explored.
Overall, a solid extension of magic options for the D&D system.
What a ripoff!.......2002-12-09
This book is good only for explaining the metamagic feats more realistically.
Beyond that, it's practically useless.
I bought it because the books I bought for the druid and bard classes were so helpful, and I thought I'd get more help with my wizard/sorcerer characters.
I should be so lucky.
The book lacks many new spells that I think are particularly useful to lower-level players.
The main reasons one would buy this book is for a more clear definition between a sorcerer and a wizard, and because it explains the metamagic feats in a more useful way than the players handbook does.

"'Twas the Night Before Christmas".......2003-09-24
ýýTwas the Night Before Christmasý is about a classic ýlegendý on what people have (in their view) of what itýs like that special night when Santa Clause comes and visits their houses. This book teaches little children what itýs like to stay up on a Christmas Eve and wait for Santa to come around. It also teaches/tells how he/Santa gets in and out of their house without making any sort of noise. This book would have to be for children who are under the age of 10. I would recommend this book to anyone who is very interested in knowing what Santa does when he comes to your house and what itýs like.
A special presentation of the classics.......2000-01-28
How many times have you heard and seen Clement Clarke Moore's classic "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," and how many ways have you heard the Biblical story of the Nativity told? How often do you find them presented with equal reverence and restraint in the same book? This book has dreamy illustrations and tellings of both stories, first of Santa, then of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, followed by the words and notes of classic Christmas carols. I loved this book since I bought it about eight or nine years ago for my future children (now ages 8 mos and 3 years). I was so sad when it was spoiled by a spilled cup of milk. It is out of print now, but I am on the hunt at used book stores in person and online. Worth finding. My 3-year-old had me read it to her again and again this past holiday season.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Patrick Stewart's one-man production of Dickens's A Christmas Carol played to sold-out audiences in New York and Los Angeles. In this studio recording based on those performances, Stewart is in rare form, using his considerable range of voices to play all roles, from the Ghost of Christmas past to Tiny Tim. It must be said that Stewart clearly enjoys playing Scrooge best of all--but isn't the villain always the most compelling character? Even if you feel that "every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart," this rendition of Dickens's classic will get you in a Yuletide mood. (Running time: 2 hours, 2 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney
Book Description
A holiday classic as you've never heard it before.
Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit and Ebenezer Scrooge come to marvelous life in Patrick Stewart's critically-acclaimed solo interpretation of A Christmas Carol. The star of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stewart has performed his one-man stage production of A Christmas Carol to sell-out audiences. Now, in this studio recording of the dazzling achievement that has thrilled audiences in New York and Los Angeles, Stewart invites listeners to rediscover the timeless story at its source: Dickens' own, classic words, presented in a soaring, virtuoso solo performance in which Stewart plays all parts.

Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The best of Charles Dickens' work. Ebenezer Scrooge is a bloke that pretty much anybody who came across him would classify as a miserable old coot.
When he is particularly miserable towards an employee at xmas, a few spooky spectral spirits take him to task.
Merry Christmas Everyone!.......2007-08-02
The classical unabridged version of this beloved Christmas tale is finally here!
Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' is the perfect holiday gift for a loved one! This book is recommeneded for kids of all ages!

Charles Dickens for Children.......2007-06-22
After finishing the original text of "A Christmas Carol" my 6 yo child was begging for me to read the story to her. When searching for a version which would suitable for her I came across a copy of the DK Eyewitness Classic at our local public library. It was a hit with our child! The text is a close adaptation of the original text. Throughout the book there are sprinklings of historical facts which are linked to the story through "eyewitness" encounters. At the end of the book is a historical section which deals with the particular time period the story takes place. Plus there is a full page biography of the author. This is a fantastic way to introduce your children to classic literature.
Patrick Stewart is perfect in this reading!.......2007-05-18
Two of my most favorite things --- Patrick Stewart and A Christmas Carol. Now I get both in one! This CD was a remarkable rendition of A Christmas Carol. Given Patrick Stewart's English accent, it made it even better.
What can one say about this that isn't already known? Everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol so there is no need to restate what it is about. If you have ever seen an episode of "Star Trek - Enterprise", you know what the voice of Patrick Stewart sounds like. So, I will only say imagine the English setting of the story and the English voice of Mr. Stewart and you have one of the best tellings of this story I have ever heard.
Nasty McGreedy!.......2007-02-03
One of the most amazing stories in western literature is Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. When brought to the stage, the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge from a horrid, lonely miser to benevolent, vibrant celebrator of Christmas can be an enthralling experience. The recent production of this show at GeVa Theatre attempted to take the audience on just such an adventure.
Book Description
Virginia Lee Burton has added her own irrepressible humor in pictures and design to the tale children have loved for centuries. The Emperor, his court, and clothes -- or lack of them -- are ridiculous as only Hans Christian Andersen can make them. The whole is a delightful concoction.
Customer Reviews:
Helped my son to read.......2002-01-20
I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.
A delightful gem.......2000-04-05
Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.
Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.
The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.
Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.
If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.
A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child.......1999-09-30
The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.
Over rated. Too wordy and advanced for children under 15........1998-12-11
The book is nicely illustrated and the book quality is good. However, it is too advanced for children. It is over-rated I suspect due to the voices of the celebrities that are on the CD. Many pages are actually quite depressing and negative. I like more upbeat books even if there is a moral to be taught.
I really was pleased with it, and so was my little sister........1998-01-20
I read this book to my little sister, she is 9 and thought it was the funnist book she had ever heared of. She really liked the part were the emporer.... well I won't give the ending away. But, I hope you enjoy it.
Customer Reviews:
The author.......2004-06-05
I've been looking for this book everywhere! Finally I come here and discover it's out of print. I haven't actually read the book, but I can comment on the author. Tom Bivins was my professor when I was a journalism student at the University of Oregon. He's quite intelligent and has many avenues of interest. He taught public relations and (the class I took) Media Ethics, but also was a historian for the Journalism school. Then, within the last month, I got my first alumni newsletter from the school with a list of the books he'd written. That's how I came to discover this book and knowing him, it will be great. I can't wait to read it.
**I haven't read it yet, so I can't rate the book, so I only suspect I would rate it 5 stars**
The Perfect Tree and favorite Christmas Carols.......2000-12-11
This 38 page book is a jewel. It is well written and profusely illustrated. The book tells the story of an old Badger who cannot sleep because the older he gets the harder it is to sleep through the winter. He is alone and his closest friends are an old hare and a family of field mice. He comes up with the idea of a "holiday feast" to share the company of his friends and cooperatively pull together the party. He is at a loss about what he should contribute until he thinks about bringing a tree. Off he goes to find the perfect tree, and at long last finds it. He raises his axe to chop it down, but stops. He doesn't have the heart to "cut it now before it had a chance to grow to the size of the other large trees in the surrounding forest." Ollie the Badger then goes to tell Stanley Hare of his idea for a "holiday feast" and of his quandry about the tree he has found. They go off together with the Poppa mouse to survey the situation. When Stanley Hare finally proclaims "We'll decorate it here" the scene is set for a heartwarming ending. There are Christmas carols woven into the story which makes it a fun participatory 'read aloud' for parents or Grand parents to share with their little ones, but it is written in such a way that it has meaning for the adults too.
