Book Description
A key collection of essays that looks at the specific issues related to the documentary form. Questions addressed include `What is documentary?' and `How fictional is nonfiction?'
Product Description
We proudly present this collection of more than 400 praise & worship songs, from classic standards to the best current titles by top worship leaders such as Paul Baloche, Brenton Brown, Don Moen, Matt Redman, Michael W. Smith, Chris Tomlin and Darlene Zschech. With great arrangements for all C instruments, this fake book is an invaluable resource for musicians from hobbyists to pros. It features instructions for using a fake book, a helpful Guitar Chord Guide, and two indexes: one alphabetical by song title, and the other by song key, which makes creating medleys a breeze. The notation is larger than in most standard fake books for ease of reading. By improvising with the chord symbols, players can fake their own arrangements of the songs, and many selections include suggestions for vocal harmonies in cue notes. Songs include: Above All Agnus Dei Ancient of Days As the Deer Awesome God Be Glorified Better Is One Day Breathe Celebrate Jesus Come Into His Presence Days of Elijah Draw Me Close Enough Firm Foundation Forever Give Thanks God of Wonders Great Is the Lord He Is Exalted The Heart of Worship I Could Sing of Your Love Forever Lord, Be Glorified Majesty Mighty Is Our God My Redeemer Lives Oh Lord, You're Beautiful The Potter's Hand The Power of Your Love Sanctuary Shout to the Lord That's Why We Praise Him These Hands This Is the Day We Fall Down We Will Glorify Worthy of Worship Y...

Great material for worship bands.......2007-09-15
This is good stuff....what I like about this book is that there's the melody line and also choir parts for the vocals. So, with more than 1 worship leader, they can sing in different parts.
I bought this together with Best of Contemporary Christian: Over 400 Songs (Fake Books)....I found that the latter one has more difficult chords on the same songs as found in this one. But no vocal parts.
Thats cool with me though....
Best book ever..............2007-06-21
This is one of the best piano books I have owned. If you don't know how to read music but can play the melody AND you can learn how to play cords this one is for you. It sounds so nice !
I paid much more for this.
Don't hesitate to buy !
The cover says it all: This IS an essential tool..........2007-05-24
...but there's nothing fake about it =)
With only the chords and treble cleff melody line (sometimes simple chords), 400 songs can fit in the palm of your hand and be copied on one peice of paper instead of the full score which takes so much more space. If your keyboardists can fake with only the melody line and chords written above, then you're in business! After using various (not always copyright ethical) ways of gathering music together for teams in the past, I LOVE having it all in one place!
The only drawback is an odd paper size which can cause problems when photocopying one-time-use sheets (lines cut off sides and bottom)
Great Resource.......2007-03-05
Our praise band consists of Youth and the young at heart. This book was a nice resource that provided material that all could appreciate. Our band consists or two singers two guitarists and a precussionist. It was easy to read and follow for everyone. We did have our church organist sit in with us and she had a tough time since it is a fake book format. She needed to be able to see all the notes on staff instead of just the melody with some harmonies in spots with the chord names over the staff. We were able to use it as a good starting resource. If you are starting a praise band or contemporary service and are on a limited budget, I'd really recommend this song book. The selection of music represents both past favorites and current ones in an easy to read format that will allow you to start and progress in building a good pool of songs to use during worship. We play in a United Methodist Church and I would go as far as to choose this over The Faith We Sing song book that is published by United Methodist Press.
Worship & Praise Book.......2007-02-14
Awesome book for ANY worship and praise leader, or church musician.
Book Description
In the more than forty years since the first human left the atmosphere of Earth, no one had ever done so without the help of a government agency. That changed on June 21, 2004, when SpaceShipOne, built by aircraft designer Burt Rutan, entered space and ushered in the commercial space age.
Investment capital began to pour into the new commercial spaceflight industry. Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic will begin ferrying space tourists out of the atmosphere in 2009. Las Vegas hotelier Robert Bigelow is spending $500 million of his personal fortune to develop the world's first commercial space station (i.e., space hotel). Former PayPal CEO Elon Musk is developing orbital spacecraft to service Bigelow's space station. Others want to tap the vast natural resources of space, including unlimited solar power. These space entrepreneurs, including Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, now see space as the Next Big Thing.
In Rocketeers, Michael Belfiore goes behind the scenes of this nascent industry, capturing its Wild West, anything-goes flavor, enhanced by the fact that most of the players live and work in California, New Mexico, Texas, and other western states, with plenty of open space for rocket launching. Likening his research to "hanging out in the Wright brothers' barn," Belfiore offers an inspiring and entertaining look at people who are not afraid to make their bold dreams a reality.
Customer Reviews:
The Rocketeers.......2007-10-02
The book was an interesting, easy to read review of the work being done by capitalists to take advantage of the innate lumbering nature of government.
I found the book darn near inspiring - watching men and women who have a vision and are willing to chase that vision no matter the cost.
I recomend this book for anyone who wants to get an idea of just what's going on out there and who is looking to be encouraged about our efforts to break out into space.
Rocketeers picks up where "The Right Stuff" leaves off.......2007-08-27
If you grew up in the 60s or 70s, if you ever thought you might accompany Haywood Floyd on his Pan Am jet into orbit in 2001, if you ever ate Space Food Sticks or drank Tang, if you ever wondered what the hell happened to the space program, and what humanity's next step into the final frontier might look like, Rocketeers is a must read book.
Like Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff", I found I couldn't put Rocketeers down. It brought back my own memories of what Belfiore calls "the first space age," as it sets the stage for today, the dawn of the second space age. The visionaries, the entrepeneurs and business people making the second space age a reality are our contemporaries. Many of these people assumed, as did so many of us, that after Apollo, a boom of private space activity would propel thousands, perhaps millions, of people into life in orbit, or on the moon.
I'm not a libertarian, and I confess that I've always resisted the analysis that NASA is to blame for the end of the first space age. With no political axe to grind, Belfiore has converted me to this school of thought. What the Rocketeers have managed to do, creating reusable, working craft carrying people into space, has been accomplished with the money NASA might have devoted to developing a zero-gravity menstrual pad.
Belfiore's historical comparisons with the development of comercial aviation, and the importance of Charle's Limberg's trans-atlantic flight, came as nothing short of a revelation. Lindberg crossed the Atlantic with no new technology, no government hand out, with nothing but courage, his own experience as an aviator--and the promise of a cash prize.
Belfiore's illumenation of the development of the X-prize, and it's capture by the Space Ship One team brought me the chill's that reading Heinlein's Rocket Ship Galileo did as a 12 year old.
In short, this book gave me a hope for the future of humanity that I haven't had since I was a teenager.
I can count on the fingers of one hand books that have done that for me in the last decade.
An Accurate and Brilliant Description of the Industry.......2007-08-27
I am a propulsion engineer at SpaceX and have spent roughly 40 days this year conducting engine testing in Texas. Mr. Belfiore does an amazing job of capturing the experience of being inside the control room and out on the stand. Additionally, his descriptions of X-Prize founder Peter Diamandis, Scaled Composites, Bigelow Aerospace, and the other players in the nascent field of commercial spaceflight are interesting and intriguing. A must read for anyone interested in this industry.
Nice overview.......2007-08-26
Fairly short and easy to read magazine-style investigative-journalistic
human interest narrative about some of the exciting people and companies
involved in America's burgeoning private space industry: the X Prize,
Burt Rutan, Virgin Galactic, Elon Musk, Robert Bigelow and a few others.
I thought the best chapters were about Burt Rutan and winning the
XPrize, in particular the blow by blow account of all the troubles they
had, very edge of the seat; also the backgrounds of Elon Musk and Robert
Bigelow. As a journalistic work it is ephemeral and will be outdated
(except as a source for later writers) but if your fascinated by
the events, people and rocket ships, this is an excellent overview valuable right now,
it's still too early to write the history. Belfiore writes for a number of periodicals like
Popular Science, Wired, New Scientists, and claims to be one of only a
few who are covering this exciting new industry, so he will certainly be
an author to watch in the years ahead.
Spacepragmatism.com Review of Rocketeers.......2007-08-25
To cut to the chase, if you want to buy a book on the private space industry this year, buy Rocketeers by Michael Belfiore. It is a brilliant look at the recent history of private companies trying to get into space and make a dollar by someone who was at ground zero. It is an easy read for anyone regardless of technical background.
For those of you who interested in more detail, Rocketeers starts out at the second X-Prize flight of SpaceShipOne, as Mr. Belfiore takes us from the VIP section at Mojave back through the Apollo era at NASA and its effect on him. I identified with his excitement and later disappointment at where NASA took us in space.
He follows the history of the X-Prize starting with Peter Diamandis' ingénues idea to have a prize for going to space. All this leads up to a word picture of what it felt like to see Brian Binnie break the 62-mile invisible wall into space. This marks the beginning of the modern private space age.
Rocketeers takes us to an in-depth peek into most of the major private space companies. He talks with the visionaries and engineers (and even passengers) from the most successful businesses, such as SpaceX, to ill-fated endeavors, like the da Vinci Project and everyone in-between including Bigelow Aerospace, RocketPlane, the Rocket Racing League, and Virgin Galactic. Moreover, he looks at each of these without judgment on their chance of success or importance. He simply reports what they are doing and why and lets the reader decide who is worth watching.
Before you accuse me of taking bribes from Harper Collins or Mr. Belfiore, there are some less than perfect parts of the book. First, the flow-of-consciousness science fiction style Mr. Belfiore uses, while working very well for a first pass through, makes it a little difficult to go back and find some tidbit of info to impress your friends.
I would highly recommend Rocketeers for anyone interested where the next 50 years of space travel is going.
Book Description
Few people know jazz as well as Gene Lees. As a musician, songwriter, former editor of Down Beat, and creator of the acclaimed Jazzletter, he has steeped himself in the music for decades. And no one writes about jazz better than Lees. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the leading jazz historians. The Washington Post called him "one of those writers who's a joy to read on any subject at all." No less than Dizzy Gillespie has called Lees "the glowing jewel of jazz" for his perceptive writing about the music. Now comes the book that jazz lovers (and Lees's fans) have been waiting for--Leader of the Band, a vivid, full-scale biography of Woody Herman. Asked by Herman in 1986 to write his biography, Gene Lees has spent close to a decade working on it, interviewing many of Herman's childhood friends and lifelong acquaintances as well as numerous musicians, including Les Brown, Milt Jackson, Peggy Lee, Tony Martin, and Red Norvo. The result is a strikingly immediate and well informed portrait of one of the great figures in jazz history--a musical giant whose career spanned the big band and bebop eras. Lees unfolds Herman's dramatic life from his childhood in Milwaukee to his final tragic days hounded by the IRS. We follow his rise to prominence in the 1930s as leader of "the band that plays the blues," when he quickly earned the love and respect of his peers that became the enduring hallmark of his career. Lees illuminates Herman's great success between 1945 and 1950, when bebop rapidly developed, revealing how Herman successfully made the transition with bands that became famous as Herman's "First Herd" and "Second Herd." (The Second Herd in particular won a stellar place in the annals of bebop, boasting many brilliant musicians, most notably, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz.) Lees also captures the ultimate tragedy that broke Herman's career--when Herman's manager diverted the band's withholding tax to settle gambling debts. Herman was tormented by the IRS for decades, until he died, penniless, in 1987. Along the way, Lees brings to life the weary routine of performing on the road, with its constant one-night engagements and unending travel, broken only by brief stays at home and moments of camaraderie. And perhaps most important, we not only see Herman's legion of friends and admirers, we see why this commanding figure was so loved and respected, even by that fractious bunch who make their living by playing jazz. Woody Herman played a central role in the development of jazz--and he played it, as he did the music, with dignity and breathtaking ability. In Leader of the Band, one of our finest writers captures the life of this great bandleader, vividly portraying the triumph and tragedy of a life in jazz.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing and Noteworthy Life.......2001-01-14
Although this was written a little while ago, its nice to have Woody's story told in depth. And this is as deep into Woody Herman's life as it is going to get, probably. It is rich and told as only a good friend of the subject could tell it. We get most of the steadily ongoing personal changes, as expected, covering all the various Herds and bands. And, thanks to Gene Lees' not stepping aside issues, a gratifyingly real look into Woody's life and times. Although the friendship does slip in occasionally, for example, Woody's being one of the great male jazz vocalists? Please! His vocals are some boring jive and meant to entertain the social crowd. Not being a clarinet fan, I always thought he could have put a lampshade on that ax in about 1954 and stuck to alto and soprano, but that's just my short coming. The consistently high level of music and energy his bands produced (with few exceptions), the length of time he was able to keep a big band working, life on the road, the way the band always reflected new sounds and influences to keep modern, the great players that passed through, and the respect and admiration his musicians held for him (after a rather shaky start, surprisingly) all add to his brilliant career. And he loved his wife through the whole amazing trip. And then there's that ugly tax thing, a real tragedy in his old age. Maybe the reason Woody is overlooked a bit historically is because, although he was a gifted musician and leader, he wasn't an arranger and writer in the Fletcher Henderson, Gil Evans, Thad Jones, Duke and Billy Strayhorn tradition. While the book's focus is squarely on Woody and his closest associates, I felt it could have dealt more fully with his music. I found I had to drop a needle on some old sides to get that, but that's not all bad, either. And finally, I think its rather nice living on Humboldt Boulevard in Milwaukee about 5 or 6 blocks from where Woody lived as a kid, although his house is gone (condos, what else?).

A Cut Above.......2007-04-07
I would like to applaud Amazon.com for their outstanding customer service. I recently ordered a book and was given an expected time of delivery. However, I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived several days earlier. I had expressed an urgent need for the book, so that I could share it with men at my church's bi-weekly men's meeting. I wouldn't have been able to accomplish that with the original scheduled date. But I was able to share the book with the expedited date Amazon so graciously provided.
I would like to recommend everyone to buy their products from the Amazon web site. They have a secure web site, and they take excellent care of their customers.
Thank you again for going that extra mile to please your customers. You demonstrated that you indeed are a cut above your competition.
Sincerly,

The guide to Drakengard is great and all, but it's easier(and cheaper) to find a guide by someone on the internet. It really wasn't worth 11 dollars I paid for it. Unless you don't have an active internet connection, do not buy this guide.

Not what you're expecting . . . it's better!.......2001-01-06
If you purchase the Star Trek Ships of the Line 2001 calendar thinking its a calendar, you will find the dates are difficult to read in small print, and it awkwardly hangs sideways, different from where last years calendar may have hung. However, if you are looking for way to have a different mini-Star Trek poster, with amazing space-scapes, and great graphic detail, then Star Trek Ships of the Line is perfect for you.
Much Better than last years!.......2000-01-14
This year's calendar is printed on better quality paper, and the photos are much better. The captions are more descriptive as well: Example- This Year-- "When Q casts the crew of the Enterprise-D into the story of Robin Hood, he appoints himself as the Sherriff of Nottingham." Last Year's Entry would have read something like this: "Q, the relentess adversary of Captain Picard".
Very Enjoyable.
A must have.......1999-12-31
This is a great calendar for all Star Trek fans. It's great to be able to see a picture each day of Star Trek. The only complaint I have is that there should be separate pictures for the weekends. I am very excited to start the new edition, seeing as I can only flip the date for the 1999 edition one more time! . Really though, It's reat and the pictures are more fabulous than last year. Get it!

I just received and flipped through the Stardate 2000 Calendar, and I feel that the color photos are superb: clear, bright, and, in some cases, nicely framed. It will be a joy to use this during the last year of the 20th century!
