You've got to love a lawyer who advises, "Don't make your lawyers rich." Entertainment lawyer Brooke A. Wharton provides an authoritative and, yes, entertaining primer for the beginning entertainment writer not just on the legal and business issues of writing for the industry, but also on how to get a career jump-started. The first section covers copyright, libel, and contracts, so that if you can't "control the exploitation of your scripts and written work ... at least [you'll] know when you're being screwed." The following section delineates the murky differences between the roles of agent, lawyer, and manager. The gist of it is that you don't need all three, but which ones you need depends on the type of person you are and the type of agents/lawyers/managers they are (industry insiders are not prone to job-title limitations). The next section has a series of interviews with writers, agents, and a producer, all of whom help to enlighten us about the various writing jobs the industry offers, from film to television to cyberspace. (If you're surprised to learn that "most writers working in the film industry do not make their living from the sale of a spec screenplay," I've got a good deal for you on some land in Florida.) Finally, there are lists of competitions, fellowships, internships, and agencies. And what about jump-starting that glamorous career? Contacts, baby. Contacts. And wouldn't you know, if you ain't got 'em, Wharton's got great advice on how to make 'em.

Book Description

An indispensable roadmap to success, The Writer Got Screwed is the first book to untangle the legal and business aspects of writing for the entertainment industry. It is for the young TV production assistant waiting for a big break, the executive with a treatment tucked away in a bottom drawer, the techie targeting the new field of cyberspace writing, or anyone who is inspired to write screenplays.

Savvy Hollywood entertainment attorney Brooke Wharton decodes legal jargon, explains how to protect creative work, shows how to read between the lines of a contract, and advises how to avoid getting sued and screwed along the way. Useful resources, including a list of agencies, competitions, fellowships, internships, and legal organizations, make The Writer Got Screwed an essential part of every writer's tool chest.

5 out of 5 stars #1 BOOK FOR FILM & TV WRITERS.......2005-12-28

There are a lot of books out there on writing for the entertainment industry, but this was the one book that got me started. A lot of writers tend to pass around gossip and poor information, but this book set me straight from the beginning, and is now joined by Wharton's website/blog: brookewharton.com(rated in top 10 for film blogs). This is the one book that anyone writing for film or television should START WITH. I'm mystified by a previous reviewer who said that Wharton doesn't talk about the WGA (there's a whole chapter on the guild), and also that she doesn't discuss acquisitions vs. development (it's called spec sales vs. assignments in the 1st 10 pages of the chapter on writing for film). Clearly this person couldn't have read the book. If you need real answers, buy the book.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK WHICH STARTED MY CAREER.......2005-12-16

After graduating from film school, I had no idea how to start my career as a writer in the film industry. "The Writer Got Screwed" not only showed my how to start my career, but showed me the different kind of careers which exist for Writers in the Entertainment Industry. Most books don't explain what WRITERS working in the entertainment industry need to know: THIS BOOK DOES. If you want to work in the legal department of a studio, take classes in copyright and contracts. If you want to work as a writer in the entertainment industry, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Anyone who Writes.......2005-12-04

This book is one of those needles in a hay stack. It's not out there like all the other books for writers. But if you find it... you have found gold. It is written so that it is easy to understand and has tons of great information in it. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Re: Writing for the Entertainment Industry .......2005-09-27

Very few books explain how to start your career, the different forms of representation (agents, managers, and attorneys), how to protect your work (copyright registration vs. registering with the WGA), how to protect yourself (contracts-what do they mean?) and give lists of available resources (scholarships, WGA approved agencies, production companies, legal resouces/attorneys) for writers working within the entertainment industry--"The Writer Got Screwed" delivers on all of these areas. Whether you are working in film, television, feature animation, soap operas, or interactive, "The Writer Got Screwed" provides interviews with writers who work in these areas and valuable, RARELY FOUND, information regarding how these started their careers. This book is a terrific, must-have book for anyone who wants to write for the entertainment industry, and now is joined by a companion website at [...].

3 out of 5 stars Good for newbies.......2005-09-21

Given all the 5 star ratings, I expected better. Not that this isn't a good book, but it depends on the reader's sophistication. If you don't know anything about some of the basic legal and business aspects of the publishing biz, this book is a good start. On the other hand, if you're a detail oriented person who really wants to dig in deep into this subject, you may find the content a bit light.

This is an invaluable resource for screenwriters. Stephen Breimer is an entertainment lawyer who really knows his stuff. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the best teacher..........2007-09-17

Irish tinwhistle music, as it is played, is very different from how it is written on the page. It has a beautiful, lilting sound that you can't get by simply reading the notes and playing them. I've played tinwhistle for almost thirty years, but I've always been a slave to written music, and bought this book because it seemed to show how a good Irish whistle player takes a basic tune and gives it that sound.

McCullough's first full example of an Irish tune, in the chapter "Putting It All Together," is a great example of why this book doesn't do that. The goal of the chapter is to start with a simple, unornamented tune and embellish it, step by step, with grace notes and other ornaments. However, his version of the unornamented tune on the CD is nothing like its written version. It already has that great, lilting Irish sound. I can't even come close to copying what he is doing in an example that he presents as dead simple. He does things involving phrasing and rhythm that he hasn't tried to teach. This is really the essence of the music, and anyone who hasn't grown up listening to Irish music everyday will have a hard time picking it up without some instruction.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars. .......2007-05-31

I was surprised at the tin whistle "how-to" options, and I read every review for each of the choices. I am NOT a musician, so I needed the basics, but I didn't want to waste a lot of space on music theory and reading the staff (I can read music). I think I made the right choice. I really wish that they would have made a complete package, though, with a tin whistle on which to learn--it doesn't have the whistle, just the book and cd. This paperback book has a charming "home-spun" quality to it, which I find endearing. The CD, although not of great production value, has value as a learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome tin whistle.......2007-03-14

This is a fantastic bundle. The whistle is beautiful, clean sounding and fun to play. The book is basic and easy to follow, yet should get me to an "expert" in no time. I actually bought a whistle tutor book with this, but prefer the one that came with the whistle! The CD is a plus, but its very basic and does add some value in being able to hear the notes, but I think I could have managed without--the book is that good.

3 out of 5 stars Not The Best.......2006-07-26

The Clarke Tin Whistle Handbook, by Bill Ochs, is a better book for beginners, and is really the definitive tin whistle tutorial. Advanced beginners or intermediate players who have worked through the Ochs book might enjoy Cathal McConnell's book. I'd also look into the Grey Larson Irish Flute & Tin Whistle book before buying Mr. McCullough's book.

4 out of 5 stars Good vs. Bad.......2006-04-18

_Bad Points_

CD Quality
The sound quality of the accompanying CDs are poor. I have a very good audio card and an extremely good surround sound system, but the grainy, gritty and sometimes faded sound makes it clear that these CDs were copied directly from a non-digital source. Most likely a previous recording on tape, or loop. Still, you can understand what is being said and the musical tunes are clear enough to catch. It is just very annoying to listen to, which diminishes overall enjoyment.

Type Font
The type font used in this book is standard typewriter. Some people may enjoy the vintage look it provides, but I find it bothersome to read.

Sheet Music Font
The sheet music font is hand-drawn. While this may seem classical and campy to look at, it adds another challenge for novice players. Some of the notes are too large to accommodate the bars and are thus indistinguishable from where they are supposed to be.

_Good Points_

Mr. McCullough presents a very well thought out guide to learning the Tin Whistle. His research into the history of the instrument may be a little overstated in some areas and a little on the dry side, but his teaching method is nonetheless comprehensible.

Mr. McCullough is rather verbose. He makes his points, and then remakes them, and remakes them yet again. Although some people may find the repetition beneficial, I find it confusing. To his credit he does not contradict himself.

The overall value of the book makes it well worth its price. The CDs and the information are an excellent package, compared to many other teaching books and courses about this instrument.

_Other Recommendations_

I personally prefer Labhras O Murchu's "Traditional Irish Tin Whistle tutor." The book is perfect for a true beginner, and has an excellent study in the art of reading music. The songs and styles contained are very well explained in a friendly, but direct way. Although it is not necessary to have the accompanying CD, it is immensely helpful. Sadly the book and CD are sold separately. For a true beginner I would sincerely recommend buying the CD as well. It has excellent sound quality, it follows the books lesson plan precisely, and it is wonderfully narrated.

The book is sold here at Amazon, but the CD is not. [...]

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning.......2006-08-23

This is a good begnning for anybody wanting to learn the Irish Whistle. Those unfamiliar with the idiom may want to listen to lots of CDs, as Cotter suggests. Also, I think that she also has a CD to accompany this tutor. Once again, probably a very good investment for those who aren't sure whether they are executing the
embellishments properly.

4 out of 5 stars A fine intro to the Irish Whistle, but you need the CD too!!.......2002-04-24

This is a very nice tutor for the Irish Whistle. Ms. Cotter assumes you dont know anything about music, and starts from the beginning, not only teaching how to play the whistle, but also the basics of reading sheet music. Tonguing, time & rhythm, breathing, articulation, slurring, ornamentation (including cuts, rolls and the casadh) are all covered using nice irish tunes as examples. There is also a small section on slow aire playing, which is the slow, haunting style that you often hear on movie soundtracks.

After the tutorial, Ms. Cotter lists the music for 100 Irish tunes. It is a nice mix of tunes--many are popular tunes that are often played during pub sessions, and others are very nice but less well known.

I started from scratch with this tutorial, and made very quick progress. However, I also had the accompanying CDs: one CD that walks through the teaching part, and two CDs playing the 100 tunes. IF YOU ARE NOT VERY VERY FAMILIAR WITH IRISH MUSIC, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU GET THE ACCOMPANYING CDS. I cannot tell if these CDs are also available on Amazon...it looks to me like only the book tutorial is offered.

Why is this important? One of the unique things about irish folk music is that unlike classical music, the basic irish tune is almost never played as written...the soul of irish music and whistle music is how you embellish and customize the tune to your own style. In her written tutorial, Cotter covers how to play cuts, rolls, and other ornaments, but you have to HEAR it played to really understand and learn how to play this music.

So, to sum up, this is a great learning tutorial when you get the CD's too. I've heard that L.E. McCullough's Irish Whistle tutorial is also very good, and also comes with a bunch of good session tunes. Im going to get McCullough's next, since his list of session tunes seems to be the "bible" that a lot of players use and refer to during pub sessions.

4 out of 5 stars This is a really good collection!.......2000-07-04

This collection is good: it containes typical tunes, and is easy to read. Like any such materials, it really does require the tape to actually hear what is being taught. I have many whistle books, and this is one to which I regularly return.

4 out of 5 stars A fine tutor, especially if you can get the tape........1999-11-15

A different sort of book than L.E. McCullogh's in many ways. I own them both and think of them as complementary. The music in Cotter's repertoire section is typeset, and easier to read, though. Get the tape for Cotter's book if you can, however. After all, the tinwhistle is a $12.00 instrument and you savings over the cost of a fiddle, say, would allow both to grace yor library.

2 out of 5 stars i dont recommend this book.......1999-06-14

It's a bit dated and it's really just a song book. It doesn't offer much of the way in instruction. I recommend L.E. McCullough over this book.

5 out of 5 stars Parting with the critics.......2006-03-19

I must part with the critics. I enjoyed this one tremendously. Great fun. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A brief comment.......2005-12-04

This book by well known and long-time Mensa member Marvin Grosswirth complements the several books that Dr. Abby Salny has put out. There's enough variety in the types of questions to keep just about anybody entertained, although a few of the questions I'm not used to seeing on the older, more traditional IQ tests. Supposedly almost a quarter of a million people have bought the various Mensa Quiz books, which is interesting, because Mensa's membership (I being one) has been gradually declining for a couple of decades. Overall a good book of puzzles, brain teasers and IQ questions to keep those mental muscles in tune, which is important--one of the most important things brain scientists have learned over the last several decades is that the brain is very much like a muscle--either you use it or lose it.

2 out of 5 stars Surely the answer is 5.5.......2005-08-16

The question asks "How many horses did the owner SELL", not how many did he get rid of.

Assuming (although not stated) that he ended up with no horses left:
To the first purchaser, he SOLD 3.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the second, he SOLD 1.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.
To the third, he SOLD 0.5 and GAVE AWAY 0.5.

So the total number of horses he SOLD is 3.5 + 1.5 + 0.5 = 5.5

3 out of 5 stars THE ANSWER IS 7.......2005-05-12

The orginal question that was posted should have indicated that there were no horses left at the end of the day. Without that qualifier, there can be no definitive answer.

If the Merchant has 7 horses when he sees his FIRST customer, then sells half (3.5) and adds half a horse (0.5), then he has sold to the first customer 4 horses, leaving him with 3 horses.

Then, the Merchant goes to his SECOND customer, and sells half his horses (1.5) and adds half a horse (0.5) then he has sold to the SECOND customer 2 horses, leaving him with 1 horse.

Finally, the Merchant goes to his THIRD and FINAL customer, and sells half of his horses (0.5) and adds a half a horse (0.5), so that the Merchant has sold to the THIRD and FINAL customer 1 horse, leaving the Merchant with ZERO horses.

Three transactions, selling half his total plus 0.5, ending the series in zero.

The total number of horses is 7.

3 out of 5 stars The answer is "3".......2004-12-18

If you only turn two transactions, the answer is three, not 7. I didn't read the book, so I do not know how the question was asked, but the way the poster wrote it only shows two transactions, and therefore the answer is 3 Horses.

**of 3 horses
One half = 1.5 plus a half = 2 (one horse remaining). Half of that horse plus a half equals 1 horse. So 3 horses in total.

What a load of rubbish. I was given this book thinking it was an autobiography. It became obvious fairly soon that not only does David Jason have nothing to do with the book, but these pompous idiots who wrote it have never even met him. Any fool can put together a compilation of old newspaper reviews, but to sell it as if they've sat down and spent time talking to him and finding out about one of our country's greatest actors is a travesty. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. I emailed the authors sometime ago to let them know how crap it was but haven't heard anything back (surprise surprise). Considering their other masterpieces include both Jordan and Jodie Marsh's autobiographies, perhaps this is one of their best works. What a shame such an amazing talent is documented by a couple of numbnuts.
