Book Description

For all those fans who wonder where their favorite movies were filmed or what it would be like to visit the sites, this book is the ultimate resource. It features information on blockbuster, cult, and art house favorites from Saturday Night Fever to Men in Black, from Belle du Jour to Ben Hur. The entries for individual films include brief descriptions of key scenes shot at the location, travel details, photographs, film stills, behind-the-scenes information, and insights as to what these places are really like. Also included are full-color features on major sites of special interest—Vertigo’s San Francisco, Woody Allen’s Manhattan, and a world Star Wars tour, among others—along with more obscure locations that have become sought-after travel destinations simply because of their connection to the movies.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wide compilation.......2006-03-15

I've been looking for a book just like this one for years. It has a wide list of movies from westerns to romantic, from LA to Toledo, from great to dreadful. The detail of the information is very complete and, most important, concise. I think is the best travel guide ever. A real treasure.

3 out of 5 stars the worldwide guide.........2005-10-08

i think the book is really useful but at the same time it seems that it is too poor on information... It does talk about a lot of movies but the information it gives it's minimum. This can be explaned by the fact that it reaches a lot of films, and as the title say, it is a worldwide guide.

4 out of 5 stars Unrivalled resource for anyone fascinated by movie locations.......2004-01-12

To me there is something almost magical about movie locations. Knowing that a place you may have revisited several times in your favourite film actually exists somewhere out there in the real world is a wonderful thought -- for me at least. And if you share my fascination, this is a book for you.

It is inevitable that everyone will be able to find omissions and oversights. Reasonably speaking, however, we could not expect Reeves to accommodate all we expect of such a book without running to several volumes (perhaps a sequel is in order, Tony?), and readers will all have films that hold a special place in their affections that there simply wasn't space to include. In fact, even though there are things I would have appreciated more of myself (my birthplace of Vancouver doesn't get enough mentions, despite being the "Hollywood of the North"), I found myself frequently amazed at the detail Reeves did go into. The book is positively bursting with photographs. Each entry is packed with bits of trivia, pertinent observations and all the details you'll need to go out and find the locations for yourself.

I haven't yet thrown my backpack over my shoulder to trek around the world in search of all these places -- but I will, someday. And Tony Reeves's guide will be right there in my pack along with my map, my can-opener and my change of underwear.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, More Please.......2003-04-10

This book combines two of my main interests: travel and classic movies. British journalist Tony Reeves shares these interests to an extreme. He has personally visited and photographed an amazing number of movie locations. There is information provided here that I have not seen anywhere else. The book is organized encyclopedia-style with brief entries alphabetically ordered by film title. Important sites for each film are highlighted in bold type. There are several one or two page colour sections dealing with a topic or movie in greater-than-normal detail. Most movies are given only a few sentences or a paragraph at most; there are tiny black and white picture illustrating the more important listings. There is a very helpful section at the end organizing the movie listings by country. I would have liked to see more, some films could easily have been given pages of information and the most important classics such as Lawrence of Arabia, entire chapters. The author has a website movie-locations.com with some of the highlights of this book.

4 out of 5 stars A FUN BOOK, BUT WITH THE SLANT TILTED THE WRONG WAY.......2003-03-24

I would imagine that this book was written primarily for movie
lovers who love a movie so much that they would like to see the
place where it was filmed and walk the streets that the stars
had walked. At least, the indexing would indicate this.
The entries are listed by movie, rather than by location.

However, I am a traveller. And the information that I seek is
to find a movie that will show the scenery of a place that I have
been or will be going to soon or to which I take a fantasy
journey. This book does a pretty good job of relating,
indirectly, how much of the landscape you can expect to see, by
telling just what locations are used. Some of them are really
very sparse.

What I am still waiting for is a book which will rate the movie
by use of landscape, along with other things such as culture
and cuisine, things that might really give you a feel for the country
or the region or the state or the city that is being
filmed. One that I expect would fit the bill is "Frida"
but this book was written before the release of the movie, so I
am trying to get feedback elsewhere. One of my favorite travelogue
movies (it hits nearly every major tourist spot in Rome)is
"Three Coins in the Fountain" But if the movie is mentioned in this book,
I could not find it. Also missing - "Tea with
Mousellini." I am passionate about Italy. I resent absences
in this category.

So, I gave this book 4 stars because I think that it has
accomplished quite well what it set out to do. However, for
my own personal usage, I would give it only 3.

      5 out of 5 stars Great piano (guitar/vocal) songbook.......2006-10-31

Although the back cover states "Easy-to-play arrangements for piano, guitar and voice" this is not at all a beginners book.
Some songs are pretty easy, but overall the level is moderate to pretty advanced. There is quite a variety of "genre" as well I think. Some nice mellow almost ballad like songs, some bluesy tunes, some jazz, a little rock.
I will scan the back cover of the book and upload the image ( if I can ) so everyone can see what songs are included.

                        Book Description

In this large workbook, a stand-alone companion to How to Reassess Your Chess, Jeremy Silman provides 131 problems designed to test a player's strengths and weaknesses. These problems cover openings, middlegames (both positional and tactical) and endgames. As a player completes one of these problems, he or she may then turn to Mr. Silman's answer, which is always detailed yet never dry. Through this process of problem solving, analysis and advice, a player is led to discover the major flaws embedded in his or her playing. Through this same process, a player is also led to an understanding of Mr. Silman's system of thinking about the game and how it differs from many other popular systems of chess thinking. This workbook may be utilized with or without Silman's earlier book How to Reassess Your Chess. It may be used in the workbook fashion described above, or its section devoted to answers may be read as an instruction manual in itself. However one chooses to read this book, it will surely prove a font of wisdom and insight for all student players. Marketing

4 out of 5 stars Original and useful, but some odd quirks.......2007-08-29

IM Silman's "imbalance" method of chess instruction is justly popular. I shows the amateur--usually for the first time--what is *really* going on in a high-level chess game: to wit, the creation and exploitation of different imbalances (superior pawn formation vs. two bishops, say) around which the two sides make their plans.

This book begins with a summary ("crash course") of his thinking techinque and imbalances from "How to Reasses Your Chess" (HTRYC). Then, a selection of over 110 problems (comprising opening, middlegame, and endgame positions as well as complete games to annotate); and, finally, their solutions. The book's great strength is in this last, very detailed, part. Every solution gives not only the correct move, but explains why: how the move helps one side use his positive imbalances or minimize his negative ones, and how the move fits with his overall plan. In addition, the solution of course offers data about the game: players, date, tournament, etc.

Clearly, Silman put a lot of effort into his book: not only does he give original and detalied analysis of every position (including a re-analysis, from the point of view of his "imbalances" method, of some of the most famous games in chess history), he also chose a very wide range of players--from Fischer and Morphy to obscure correspondence players to 1500-level amateurs--if the game edifies the reader. I wish more chess writers would do this: one learns just as much (and more) from Silman's down-to-earth "Why is this move, which looked perfectly logical to the 1500-rated player, simply wrong?" than from the typical "What marvelous combination did Fischer find here?" one usually finds.

To those who want to learn or practice Silman's thinking technique, which is well worth knowing if only in order to understand masters' games better, this is a very good book. Apart from the hard work and originality, I commend Silman for not being greedy and trying to squeeze more sales out of a previous book: instead of referring the reader to HTRYC for an explanation of his method, the Workbook is a stand-alone book that includes a detailed explanation of it, even if it might hurt sales. (It also has a larger, clearer format and far fewer typos than HTRYC). Such ethical behavior by authors should be the (Grandmaster) norm, but isn't.

One problem, though, is the quirky design: candid photographs of famous chess players are printed in the book apparently at random, and the "solution" section reprints every question before giving the solution to it. The first oddity is due to Silman's desire to show chessplayers as they really are. The second is probably because, on the one hand, Silman doesn't want people to read the problem with the solution "tempting" them on the bottom of the same page, while, on the other, once they *do* decide to look at the solution, he doesn't want them to go back and forth between different pages to make sure they see what bishop or pawn the solution is talking about. In my view, it would have been better on balance to omit both as unnecssary and distracting rather than helpful. That said, this is a minor issue, and perhaps a matter of taste.

If you are interested in chess strategy at all, this is a great book to get.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-23

This was a great book to get after I read "The Amateur's Mind" by Silman. Silman's system of looking for and creating imbalances, then exploiting the imbalances, has given me a framework for thinking about chess. Much better than books like "How to Think Like a Grandmaster," which really didn't teach me anything.

4 out of 5 stars A good compliment to Silman's previous work, but also useful by itself.......2007-07-16

I do not believe one can get a true appreciation for Silman's 'Reassess Your Chess' without also working through this Workbook. The games examined provide many opportunities to exercise the knowledge of imbalances acquired in the previous book. As a stand-alone instruction manual, it dispenses copious useful insights into the game of chess, including a VERY enlightening tutorial on endgames involving Bishops of opposite colors. Although also quite time-consuming, it is a good improvement over the long-winded ways of 'Reassess Your Chess' with most of the middlegames studied much more to the point (see my review on 'Reassess Your Chess').

Alas, it is not without flaws. Besides minor issues like typos and misspellings, there are a couple of incorrect analyses; most notable is the one in Problem 131 (the very last in the book). Silman insists in the question that White had missed a great opportunity, namely a Bh7+, or "Petrosian check," which would ensure a quick win for White. However, after investigating the position with Chessmaster 10, I do believe Silman is incorrect. In fact, the follow-up position actually gives Black a winning game. These misdiagnoses are annoying, but also can be very confusing to a lower-rated player.

Even with its faults, the many in-depth tactical and position dissections should not only heighten a chess player's senses to the issues he needs to look for and be aware of in every phase of the game, but, if nothing else, add to his intuition, a very important weapon in the player's arsenal.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Stepping Stone.......2007-04-26

This book along with How To Reassess Your Chess is a great combo. The problems in the book can be difficult but if you work through them you will be rewarded. Now if you grasp what's in this book you will be better than most amateur's but it might not make you a Grandmaster. It is a stepping stone to better things. Jeremy Silman's system isn't unique but he explains chess concepts a lot better than most author's. Once you comprehend Silman's books you can move onto other chess books and understand them much better. The best part is the ending where you learn to annotate games, which I have always wanted to learn. With that annotation knowledge you can examine complete games and come up with your own moves and continuations and compare those moves with a chess engine for analysis.
The things I didn't like though. I found myself trying to guess what Jeremy Silman would do and second guess what the answers to the problems were. I found that some of the answers had many continuations that would work. I begin to feel that Jeremy Silman wrote this book to show you that you didn't understand his concepts in his book How To Reassess Your Chess and he really wanted to stick it to the reader and not a book that demonstrates his system with problems.

Gosh, my wife got after me for having so many chess books, so it became a point to limit them (or else). I got "How to Reassess your Chess" by Silman, and the workbook. I actually like the Reassess book more. It taught me along with others the most. And, the two Reassess books together really form a perfect set. I have regone over all of these books more than once and the ideas have sunk it - I am winning a lot more! I also recommend books on opening traps - like learning tactics! My other favorite type of books is on traps - I like learning chess tactics and traps in the opening.

                            Book Description

This unique volume examines the process of cableviewing, the nature of cableviewers, and especially the viewing choice process. The concept of viewing style is introduced and individual differences in viewing style are examined. The research presented here represents the change from media effects studies to studies of users and user behavior.
