It is often said that music soothes the savage beast, but did you ever think that it could help with time management? What about improving communication? Although he makes no claims that The Tao of Music is a cure-all, John Oritz has tapped the power of music by combining it with established psychological techniques and Taoist ideas to create an innovative concept: your music collection can help you overcome the obstacles of everyday life, from pain to procrastination, relaxation to romance. The Tao of Music isn't just a catalog of New Age hits; Oritz knows his music and draws on genres as diverse as classical and country, giving you the latitude to design your own music therapy.

A classic.......2002-01-30
A classic within this genre.
The cream of the crop.
Superb!
A gift for mind, body and soul.......2001-12-30
I just received this gem of a book as a Christmas gift and have not been able to put it down. This is an easy to read, superbly insightful volume with quick, accessible and practical chapters
that should be in everyone's bookshelf right at eye level. As an avid, long time collector of alternative (complementary) therapy approaches I find this to be the most comprehensive book I have ever laid hands on. A pity that, being published by a small publisher, it has not received the "marketing muscle" of much lesser volumes. Bringing together eastern thought, simple-common sense psychology (fully validated by research that supports all of the approaches throughout the book), and music from one's own collection the Tao of Music is a gift for mind, body and soul.
If you have children rush out and also get his "Nurturing Your Child with Music," sensational.
Exceptional.......2001-07-11
Simple to read. Relevant to laypersons and professionals. Essentially any "issue" we all deal with is addressed in this book written in a clear, practical, orderly format. I use it often in my practice (I am a psychotherapist) and recommend it to my clients who rave about it without fail. My wife, a high school teacher, also uses it to assist in her lessons plans. Exceptional!
Fantastic professional resource.......2000-08-02
I originally purchased this book based on two, completely unrelated endorsements from colleagues who have found it consistently useful both in their personal lives and their professional practices. Having read this excellent book I can honestly say that it is a wise, cost effective investment. The fact that each clearly written, well researched chapter stands on its own makes it very easy to find a topic one is dealing with (using music to handle anger or depression for instance, or designing a personal exercise or relaxation program) and putting together a personalized program from among the many practical exercises suggested. The hundreds of recommended song titles are refreshingly modern and amazingly effective. If extra reseach into a particular area is necessary each chapter offers a number of relevant professional articles and resources to fit each target area.
As a professional trainer, however, I find this book takes an added dimension and provides an excellent resource for anyone designing programs to address many typical issues encountered throughout corporate or industrial settings such as time management, procrastination, motivation, productivity, relaxation, communication skills, social relations, and a host of other relevant areas encountered in management, education or business.
I recommend the Tao of Music highly both as a professional resource for trainers and a personal tool to help address day to day situations.

Amazingly thorough.......2000-07-05
Filled with powerful insights this amazingly thorough book seems to cover just about every human condition in a simple to read, practical style. The author covers issues such as feeling low, anger, stress, anxiety and many others through which we all struggle and gives us clear, concise ways of using music (songs of all styles) and sound (our own voices, listening, speaking, natural sound techniques such as toning and chanting) to make each day a little brighter. The book also contains numerous original Zen type parables throughout that serve to emphasize the ideas and approaches in practical, creative ways. These "music-psychology-philosophy" gems alone are easily worth the price of admission. This book is a great discovery and would serve as a wonderful adjunct in most music classes. Jackie Wallers, Music teacher, writer and consultant.
Book Description
Dramatically broadening the previous field of research on sound, Sound Theory/Sound Practice promises to renew the debate over the importance of sound to cinema, from a theoretical as well as a historical perspective.

A Joy to Read.......2003-02-22
For a student of Greek this book is most useful for becoming acquainted with the pronunciation of Fifth Century Attic Greek. Unfortunately a record, rather than a CD, is included to reproduce the sounds discussed in the text. I would recommend that Stephen G. Daitz's tapes (The Pronunciation & Reading of Ancient Greek) be used in conjunction with this book. Nonetheless, it is an enjoyable and useful book to peruse and study.
Book Description
The third edition of Engineering Noise Control has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended. Each chapter contains new material, much of which is not available elsewhere. The result is a comprehensive discussion of the theoretical principles and concepts of acoustics and noise control, a detailed discussion of the hearing mechanism, noise measuring instrumentation and techniques, noise criteria, sound source characterization and emission, outdoor sound propagation, sound in rooms, sound transmission through partitions, enclosure design, dissipative and reactive mufflers, vibration isolation, equipment sound power emission calculations and active noise cancellation.
The book is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate or graduate students of acoustic and noise control, and it also contains the necessary information and prediction techniques that make it an invaluable resource for the practitioner.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced but thorough - a bible for the experienced acoustician.......2006-02-09
I have spent a number of years in the acoustics field and this book is the bible of industrial acoustics.
Having said that, this is not the "easiest" book to read and understand. It is aimed for those pursuing advanced studies in acoustics and acoustic control, with the assumption the reader has a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of math and physics.
The first few chapters in the book do give a brief introduction to sound (from a physics standpoint) and calculating sound levels for various sources. Anyone familiar with this information will recognize the information has not been significantly altered from Beranek's texts. Some information is given for current health & safety legislation but this is rather specific to the US. The initial chapters will not be adequate for someone new to the field of acoustics.
The "meat" of the book gives substantial treatment to noise control methods, noise in rooms, design of abatement equipment (both indoor and outdoor), industrial applications etc. however again the primary approach is from a mathematical/physics development. This does not mean one cannot immediately use the information effectively. The simple truth is noise abatement is not a "simple" field and the book doesn't attempt to "simplify" the complicated material.
The new edition of this book gives a good (if brief) description of the emerging field of active noise control. The primary limitation of this area is not the author's fault - there isn't enough practical data for active noise control at present.
One downfall of this book as a text is that very very few examples are provided for a student, and in the new version no chapter questions are included. For a student, I would recommend acquiring the 2nd edition of the text for the chapter questions.
Overally, an excellent resource for the experienced practioneer or advanced student.
Book Description
Educators need a balance between discipline theory and its practice in the classroom. This is especially important in today's education climate, with its increased demands for teacher accountability. Tauber has designed his book for both those who are new to teaching and those who are already seasoned teachers but who have had little, if any, course work in discipline. The book presents several sound frameworks that readers can use to evaluate the six tried-and-true discipline models (Dobson, Canters, Jones, Dreikurs, Glasser, and Gordon) that follow. All of these models work. Teachers need to select, learn, and implement a discipline model that best reflects how they feel students should be treated. This book can help. Tauber goes on to explore a number of topics, some controversial, all quite relevant, concerning how teachers can prevent, as well as handle, problem behaviors. A chapter describing "A through Z" discipline suggestions can be immediately put into use. Another chapter describes what other noted authors have to say on discipline, while the chapter on violence in schools addresses the unfortunate realities that exist in many classrooms. A final chapter on the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) equips the reader with the knowledge and skills necessary to learn more about any and all topics related to classroom management.

Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide II gives the resale value of more than 50,000 rare, common, import, out-of-print, and promo CDs. The introduction features a detailed history of the CD, defines what is collectible, and even describes how a CD is manufactured and why it's so durable. Hundreds of photos. Four basic elements that determine a worthy collectible CD: popularity of the artist, presence of unreleased tracks, special packaging, availability of the CD. AUTHORBIO: Greg Cooper, the author of the world's first-ever and most respected CD and laser disc collector's guide, has been compiling lists of collectible CDs and tracking their value since 1988. He has written articles and has consulted on the subject of CD collecting for numerous magazines and newspapers. REVIEW: The author of this book, Gregory Cooper, has scoured the world, consulting regularly with hundreds of collectors, dealers, and manufacturers, to create the most complete and accurate database of CD collectibles ever. Not only are there thousands of listings, but there is a section of color photos and information on first issues, CD singles, out-of-print CDs, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Best overall source available.......2005-01-09
Because of cd collecting being relatively new there hasn't been an established price guide so some pricing may be off. However this guide cotains a great deal of cd information and goes a long way in identifying rare and collectable cd's. When I first purchased this book about 6 years ago I wasn't even aware of collectable cd's. Since then I found countless rare and valuable cd's in used cd bins.
Heavy Metal Fans........BEWARE!.......2003-11-03
80% of my collection was not even listed in this book. I became very frustrated when they didn't even list the complete bands discography. To top that off, most were singles that were listed.
Essential Guide -- and the only one out there.......2003-02-19
Admittedly, some of the pricing is way off and could use a refresh. But this field of collecting is so new (even the author points that out) that it is very difficult to establish pricing. For overall layout and identification of early CD's, there is simply no other guide out there. Great coverage of things like the "Edison Sampler", which was the first compact disc ever pressed in the U.S. As a bonus, Laser Discs are covered as well.
Incredible Compact Disc Guide.......1999-11-16
This is the best book on music collecting I have ever seen. The two prior reviews couldn't be more WRONG! This guide has tons of color pictures of collectible CDS and information on just about every aspect of the compact disc and CD collecting. The book also has a huge listing of collectible CDs from around the world (more so than most record guides). This is a book that I have read over and over again and always find something new. I give this book five stars and is a must for every CD collector. (Plus it only cost me the same as a CD.)
Not as useful as I expected it might be........1999-09-08
Aside from the numerous errors and inaccuracies I found just skimming through the book, I found that it lacked information that might be useful to collectors who wanted to know about dealers and internet sites that specialize in the kinds of CDs found in the book. Their much touted web site proved to be a wild goose chase too. Not recommended.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best, funniest and most fun book of energizers and icebreakers ever!.......2005-09-16
I've been using the ideas in this book since it first came out. It has brilliant and hysterically funny ideas taken from Matt Weinstein and Joel Goodman's work with groups of people all over the world.
Matt Weinstein has a company, also named Playfair, which conducts ice-breaking events for incoming freshmen at colleges (and that measurably reduces dropouts from college!) and for corporate work-teams. They've worked with some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies and get people to shed some of their stand-off-ishness and become more able to relate to/with each other and to communicate more effectively.
Frankly, I've never seen anything as joyous as a "Playfair" conducted by Matt Weinstein or a conference conducted by Joel Goodman. And my groups in workshops and my audiences in the many keynote addresses I do have all benefited from the activities in this book which I've used over the years. If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, you'll be amply rewarded!
Non-competitive game design.......2003-07-15
I like "Playfair," but not for the reasons it was written. I don't need to create touchy-feely, "shiny happy people" bonding activities for white-collar employees. I'm interested in computer game design and this book is great for learning about a concept that most people don't even know exists. I believe that non-competitive computer and console games will breathe new life into the game industry in the future. It may be more important than "Controlled Randomness" which also increases the value and importance of a game. Anyone interested in discovering how to make original games that alleviate instead of aggravate should buy a copy of this book as soon as possible.
