5 out of 5 stars Fascinating stuff for movie and history buffs.......2000-08-24

I enjoyed this book immensely. Did you grow up watching such great classics as "Sergeant York", "A Yank in the RAF", "Sahara", "Flying Tigers", "Wake Island", "Gung Ho", and "Air Force". These are but a few of the great movies made during WWII to bolster American morale. There were also some real stinkers. I never cared much for "Mrs. Miniver", "Dragon Seed", "Days of Glory", and several others that were just plain bad of silly. This book explains the reason behind these films and some of the history of their making. The Office of War Information (OWI) was founded by the government to monitor the content of the war films fed to the American Public and set standards to follow and frameworks to work within. There is some very interesting stuff here. Why was Italy treated as a nonbelligerent? Why were Austria, Finland, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Rumania never mentioned? Why was there no distinction of Russian ethnic groups (they were all just simply Russians)? Why were Japanese depicted as barely more than monkeys and the Germans as stupid baffoons, but no racial slurs? This book gives great insight about Hollywood, the movies, and WWII.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1998-09-12

This book was extrodinary, and I recommend for everyone to read and purchase it.

    Book Description

Conflicting interests and conflicting attitudes toward the war characterized the uneasy relationship between Washington and Hollywood during World War II. There was deep disagreement within the film-making community as to the stance towards the war that should be taken by one of America's most lucrative industries. Hollywood Goes to War reveals the powerful role played by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Office of War Information--staffed by some of America's most famous intellectuals including Elmer Davis, Robert Sherwood, and Archibald MacLeish--in shaping the films that were released during the war years. Ironically, it was the film industry's own self-censorship system, the Hays Office and the Production Code Administration, that paved the way for government censors to cut and shape movies to portray an idealized image of a harmonious American society united in the fight against a common enemy. Clayton R. Koppes and Gregory D. Black reconstruct the power struggles between the legendary producers, writers, directors, stars and politicians all seeking to project their own visions onto the silver screen and thus to affect public perceptions and opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Politics, Profits and Propaganda.......2005-08-26

`Hollywood Goes to War" is the biography of a federal government agency, the Office of War Information (1942-45.) The OWI - not to be confused with the OSS, OGR, OCD or any other agency in that alphabet-soup happy era - was a creation of the Roosevelt Administration whose purpose was to control the message contained in American movies during the duration. In other words, it was a propaganda agency which, as authors Koppes and Black explain in the preface, issued instruction manuals to the studios, sat in on story conferences, reviewed screenplays, pressured studios to change scripts and even scrap pictures, and sometimes even wrote dialogue for key speeches. Politicians, even in a democracy that prides itself on its tolerance of free speech, aren't above trying to spin a message now and then. Spinning is usually done as covertly as possible. World War II was seen as a `total' war, though, and controlling the content of Hollywood movies (employing , as they put it, a `strategy of truth') was seen as a necessity. One of the chapter titles phrase the problem succinctly enough; Will this movie help us win the war? OWI was created to arbitrate and answer that question.

Of course, the demands of propaganda are different than those of mass entertainment, and HGtW offers a few surprising battles. None more so, perhaps, than OWI's strong reaction against Preston Sturges' frothy screwball masterpiece, 1942's Palm Beach Story, a movie HGtW quotes an OWI reviewer characterizing as "a fine example of what should not be made in the way of escape pictures." Palm Beach Story's transgression seems to have been that it didn't take the war quite seriously enough. The idle rich spent money with frivolous abandon, distressed lovers ignored the war and its issues. It seems reasonable enough that OWI would squash movies verging too close to such socially realistic topics as gangsterism, draft dodging, labor unrest, racial conflict, and any number of other ills. It's the inoffensive domestic movies that OWI objected to that make HGtW so fascinating. Still, there was a war to be won and movies were a great medium for getting The Message out. That the heavy, heavy hand of a governmental agency might kill whatever value the messenger had seemed to have been ignored now and then. Another area of burning interest to OWI was the depiction of our allies. Not surprisingly OWI loved the movie `Mission to Moscow' ("...the most notorious example of propaganda in the guise of entertainment ever produced by Hollywood ") and Keys to the Kingdom, a movie which, as Koppes and Black put it, "reflected the Roosevelt administration's propaganda needs, which in turns were based on a blend of ignorance, apathy, and optimism about the real situation." The critics hated them, too. Besides movies about our allies, the home front and combat war movies, OWI worried over the depiction of the enemy. In this case the Germans and the Japanese. With an eye to the post-war world OWI preferred that the typical German was seen as a separate entity from the German ruling elite. The Japanese, the beast in the jungle, were more or less a lost cause. OWI loved Darryl Zanuck's ambitious and expensive `Wilson,' which presented a glowing and humanizing portrait of Woodrow Wilson, the martyr to the dream of the League of Nations. The message in this case was the need for a league of nations in the post-war world. The result was an expensively mounted yawn fest that is practically unwatchable.

As someone who watches a lot of old movies, I enjoyed Hollywood Goes to War quite a bit. Any book about managed information in the form of government propaganda is bound to raise disturbing issues, and to their credit Koppes and Black present their story clearly without undue editorializing. Anyone who's a fan of American movies made during World War II will find this book educational and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars My ambivilant opinion on excellent reportage........1999-01-06

        V. Vale has served as the counter-culture's principle archivist and preservationist. The richly varied subjects of his books read like an anthology of dissent with the status quo. The potentcy of each topic is (or at least was) due in part to its' rupture with the overall views of the general public. The work is comprehensive, thurough and has always provided a great deal of insight to the subject, oftentimes in the subject's own words. SWING! is no exception. It is the definitive text to the what, the who, the wheres and the whys of the neo-swing movement. The one problem I have is that every time Vale releases another great book on another sub-culture, it doesn't seem to be soon after that that sub-group is eventually consumed by the status quo... castrating the subject of its' adverse positioning which debilitates its' power altogether. In this respect Mr. Vale is much like Columbus: A passionate explorer who's arrival foreshadows the coming of many uninvited strangers. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed this book very much. All the musicians, dancers and other luminaries are very commited to this thing that they love very much. Though such a thing tends to be its' own reward, the dedication should be recognized, accredited and applauded which is exactly what this book does. At the same time, there is the imfamous GAP advert as well as some automobile commercials, The Cherry Poppin' Daddy's in an ad for BEST BUY and, of course, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy appearing on MELROSE PLACE, as the halftime entertainment at the ROSE BOWL (complete with flag twirlers in sequense fedoras) and the up-coming SUPERBOWL. In one respect, all this popularity has enabled some great musicians to make a full time living at what they do best and they deserve to cash-in. On the other hand, all this hype does seem to detach from this thing most of what made it interesting to begin with. Like so many others before it, the Neo-Swing scene seems less and less disposed to define itself on its' own terms and more at the mercy of how it is pecieved by an outside population of faddists and other avid magazine subscribers. For me, one of the most appealing things about going to rockabilly and swing shows was the noticeable LACK of Yuppies. That was three years ago. Today, kookery abounds. More actors than action. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Rertro-Swing Style Book.......1998-12-25

Although not much in the way of dancers and Swing Dancing, it does capture somewhat the Retro-Style of The Bands, Attire, Cars, Martinis, Cigars, Tattoos, etc. It would have been nicer to include more dancing and more People in the dance. Alot of the Information is NOT FACT and should not be taken Historically as so, but... it is based on what some of those people doing it now believe! If you are in the Boonies or not local to Los Angeles Or San Francisco this book is Awesome. Even if you are it is worth the Money.. Every Swing Fan should not be without it...I Liked It.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS LIKE THE BIBLE OF SWING ITS GREAT.......1998-11-05

5 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive coverage of the swing culture.......1998-08-25

This book interviews over 15 of the major bands including big players like Royal Crown Revue and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. In addition to the bands, this book covers multiple swing dance groups, clubs, and record labels. For those topics where words simply aren't enough, this book packs hundreds of pictures from milestone preformances to Vice Grip's 1947 Cadillac to Mark Jordan's vintage tie collection.

        5 out of 5 stars Swing Baby!.......1998-08-24

This book was sooo good. It gave many interviews and tons of pictures. As well as venues where you can go swing dancing. It had lists of bands and music to listen to and go see. I thought this book was really good and everyone who loves swing dancing and swing music should have this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good but will get better.......2006-11-03

Since this is the kind of publication that is updated yearly, one can see where it can be improved and one would expect that improvement.

What is primarily frustrating to me (maybe not to others) is the lack of a cohesive overview of teams that puts all the facets of a team analysis together and adds it up to produce an outlook for the upcoming season, taking into account the schedule. Yes, they do mention a projected win total but you don't see the components that comprise it.

In other places the book declares that you can't tell whether a quarterback was that good or if it was the receivers or vice versa. You'd think that this is precisely what the book should have been going after. There are other similar situations - how much of a team's success in running the ball is the running back or the offensive line? Or the scheme they run? It's not easily discernible. Again, you'd think that this would be exactly the point of the book - determining the actual contributions of the individual components and then summing them up to project expected results for the coming year.

Since this kind of mathematical analysis of football is new, there is a lot of room for improvement. Still, it's a start.

John C. Maxwell offers lively stories about the foibles and successes of Lee Iacocca, Abraham Lincoln, Princess Diana, and Elizabeth Dole in The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Readers can expect a well-crafted discussion that emphasizes the core attitudes and visions of leadership. Maxwell uses the same tell-it-like-it-is approach that he honed in the bestselling Developing the Leader Within You. For instance, when explaining "The Law of Influence," Maxwell states that "job titles don't have much value when it comes to leading. True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed or assigned. It comes only from influence and that can't be mandated." Even after Princess Diana was stripped of her title, Maxwell says she was still able to lead a global effort toward banning land mines because of her sophisticated ability to influence others.

If readers are looking for a step-by-step formula, Maxwell's list of "laws" will probably seem too chatty and anecdote driven. There are no specific tips on what readers can do during the next workday to help them become stronger leaders. On the other hand, Maxwell's background as a pastor gives him an inspirational voice and a spiritual context to leadership that many business and church leaders appreciate. --Gail Hudson

          Book Description

The result is a revealing study of leadership delivered as only a communicator like Maxwell can.

This workbook is a great companion book to his award winning book of the same name. I've recommended The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership to almost every one of my mentor clients and if you are a leader, or if you have an interest in becoming a great leader, this is the place to start.

Also see the John Maxwell Leadership Study Bible as a great reference on leadership with Biblical examples.

I've listened to some videos of John C. Maxwell's "Laws of Leadership" series a few years ago and now I bought this book based on it. It's a great way to mix history with Christian leadership and as a college history major, I found this book useful! I will be looking into John C. Maxwell's book series soon.

5 out of 5 stars ARE YOU A LEADER?..... THEN YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!.......2003-01-06

This was an excellant book that dove deeper into John Maxwell's classic, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. It's presented similar to John's 21 Laws where each chapter is broken down into an individual Law, but James Garlow gives specific examples of how Great Leaders in History have succeeded by following these laws or have failed because they abused the laws of leadership. John Garlow's writing is clear and to the point and this book is definately worth the price. Your learning from a leader who has been following and studing with John Maxwell personally for the past fifteen years! This book is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to become a better leader/CEO, build an organization, and understand John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership more in depth. BUY IT TODAY! You can't afford not to.

I am a leadership trainer and give over 200 programs per year. My leadership library is extensive and varied. Most of the new leadership books are just "love song" books - they are saying the same thing in a different way. In this book, the messages are the same, but the writing methodology is fresh and different.

James has accomplished an intriguing and "page turner" leadership lessons book by including detailed historic examples of each of Maxwell's 21!

5 out of 5 stars : Is the leadership a job or an art by itself?.......2005-11-03

If you are not a true experienced leader in your area, it will be become a hard task to try to be authentic simply because you are taking side over outer experiences and not from your own; talk about leadership without being it is equal to be a leadership reporter. There are very clever examples that reaffirm this statement: Consider for example: The astonishing and enriched life of Lawrence of Arabia, An actor prepares of Stanilawski, The famous exercises guide by Charles Atlas in the Fifties, or Joseph Campbell talking about myth. If you have the experience you do not need the blind faith to follow indications as a Decalogue; the letter by itself helps but it is never enough.

Any apprenticeship is a cycle; you make a journey from the University texts and leap from the theory to the daily practice: experience which implies deal, negotiate and face countless conflicts where the ideal conditions never appear. The expected effectiveness from your work environment demands from you the continuous enhancement, personal and professional. Remember the wisdom words of Mishima: "To know and not doing is still not knowing."

Along its captivating reading, you will engage with the easy going analysis around those little things that occur around us, that constitute motive of attention. The case of Diana Princess and Mother Teresa is a relevant testimony.

If you are deeply engaged with this always passionate and fascinating subject, and you are absolutely persuaded you want to be in ascending profile inside your enterprise, go for this book. Its singular format is far to be a formal learning book; consider it a journey notebook.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT OVERVIEW OF LEADERSHIP FOR GROWTH.......2004-09-13

There are many books written every year on leadership, and they all tend to have the same weakness: They focus on just part of the problem. THE 21 IRREFUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP is a valuable exception because it looks at leadership in both companies and nonprofits at the same time, drawing on appropriate lessons from both. What I particularly liked was how he provided examples of how to overcome bad sistuations as well as how to grow faster from good ones. This clearly is the most encyclopedic approach to the subject of leadership that I have had the pleasure to read. The lessons seemed right to me based on my many years of studying what makes the most successful leaders have the best results. For anyone who is a leader or aspires to be one, THE 21 IRREFUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP will be very valuable. Then you can expand your reading to get more detail in the areas where you need the most help. If you follow the principles of this book, you will avoid most of the problems that stall progress in organizations. Good luck to you!
