2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought........2005-07-31

When I order this book I hope a very good Bond book with great pictures. But it was very disappointing. The all black and white pictures look old and some have bad quality. You may think that of course a picture form the movie Goldfinger must look old because it's a movie from the early sixties but, you know what I mean. I have seen pictures from Thunderball and other movies in full color and look spectacular but not in this book. And much of the info seems like "I don't care at all about this fact" Anyway, if you are a very big Bond fan, you should try this one, but if you don't, forget it immediately.

1 out of 5 stars From First to Worst.......2004-01-16

JUNK. What used to be the best 007 reference book ever has been ruined by the COMPLETELY ASININE way the entries are now organized. Not worth the paper it's printed on anymore.

2 out of 5 stars This is good, not the best!!.......2003-07-01

This book is good if you want some minor facts that have been exhaustively researched. I bought my copy in May of 2002. It makes it seem that the movies are junk and you are wasting your time. A better Bond book is The Essential Bond, by Lee Pfeiffer. This one tells you about gadgets, cars, villians, and the sexy Bond girls. I rate this one 5 stars!!

5 out of 5 stars A Bond dictionary that all Bond fans should own!.......2002-12-02

The James Bond Movie Encyclopedia is exactly what it says, a complete listing of many things that have been a part of the making of the the James Bond films from Dr. No to Goldneye, including the two versions of Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Packed full with a personal review of each film and a list of cast and credits. Many people who have been a part of the movies is included in the films. From Adams, Maud to Zorin, Max, the relentless information doesn't stop coming. You will learn about all the directors, producers, stars and everyone that is a part of the Bond Family. A very long read with everything in order, many fans will be amazed with the large length of this book. (one note: fans of Roger Moore, (like me) may not be pleased with the quite terrible reviews of 3 of his films.) Hey everyone has their own opinion. All in all a fantastic Bond book that every bond fan should own!

3 out of 5 stars Repetitive with glaring omissions.......2002-03-20

The James Bond Encyclopedia is what it claimed to be, an Encyclopedia of the James Bond films, which featured entries from Dr. No all the way to Licence to Kill, as well as Casino Royale (both the original and the spoof) and Never Say Never Again. A later edition included a preview chapter on GoldenEye.

As fascinating as reading the entries, some get a little bit repetitive. For instance, when you look up a characer's entry, and then to the entry of the actor who played him, you pretty much get the same info. Rarely do you get some background info on the actor in question.

And Steven Jay Rubin wasted no time trashing three of Roger Moore's movies. Especially A View To A KIll.

So Christopher Walken's Zorin is bland and stupid. Okay, so back it up with some facts. Grace Jones was said to be too androgynous for mainstream audiences. Perhaps his idea of mainstream is back in the 1960s, which he is seem to be stuck in.

He also said that no one care about the plot because no one care about Silicon Valley, and the film dosesn't explain why Zorin's monopoly on micochips will be so dangerous to the free world. Hello? Are we watching the same movie? As Stacey said, "He'll kill millions" with his man made earthquake; the danger does not lie in Zorin's monopoly, but in his plans to obtain it.

That said, the Encyclopedia also ommitted any mention of Chrissie Hynde and the Prentenders and their two fabulous songs "If There Was A Man' and "Where Has Everybody Gone" for the Living Daylights....but he was sure to mention Phyllis Cornell, who was Tania Mallet's double in Goldfinger.

It seems that if a James Bond Encyclopedia is to be written, it should be written by more than one person....and someone more objective.

Napster may or may not be a factor in the music scene of the future, but its extraordinary rise--and the attention it focused on the MP3 digital audio format--has ensured its status as a key figure in bringing this new type of sound recording to public consciousness. Sonic Boom, by veteran cyberjournalist John Alderman, cogently recounts the brief but tumultuous story that led up to this upstart song-trading exchange attracting 500,000 users each night--along with the wrath of the traditional recording industry. But Napster is hardly the entire story when it comes to the MP3 revolution, and Alderman is wise to focus significant attention on other important players. These include the Internet Underground Music Archive, an early Web site launched to help bands reach a wider audience; MP3.com, whose domain name initially made it the central gathering point for online music fans; Liquid Audio and RealAudio, two of the first established efforts to facilitate sound transmittal over the Net; the Grateful Dead, Todd Rundgren, and Beastie Boys, a few of the independent-minded, techno-savvy musicians whose connection vastly boosted interest; and the Recording Industry Association of America, the old-line trade group that squeezed Napster and put its very future in question. Hardcore tune traders may not be interested in all the machinations Alderman describes, but those drawn to the business side of music and the Internet, as well as the debate over intellectual property rights in the electronic world, should find his account of the still-unfolding drama an engaging and illuminating read. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

The first book to tell the captivating inside story of the MP3 revolution as the record labels, musicians, Internet entrepreneurs, and fans battle for control over the future of music. Digital compression technologies such as MP3 and Napster are having an explosive impact on the way music is distributed. Every day, hundreds of thousands of music files are searched for, shared, recorded, and listened to by computer and Web users-all free of charge. It's a boon for consumers and a disaster for record companies, and the end result can be nothing less than a cultural and economic transformation. Sonic Boom is a fascinating narrative of the controversy that's sending shock waves through the music industry. It's the story of musicians such as the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, who are reaching fans without record company support; entrepreneurs who are distributing MP3 files without licensing agreements; and record-industry executives who are fighting for their business at every turn. It reveals how, even as the star-maker machinery of record companies remains in the hands of the old guard, innovators are finding ways to outsmart it. Peopled with a sensational cast of characters that includes rock stars, music moguls, teenagers, and Internet entrepreneurs, Sonic Boom exposes the recording industry's plight as a fascinating microcosm of the vast cultural, ethical, and legal issues that all industries face in the information age.

4 out of 5 stars Only if you're genuinely interested.........2003-05-07

An excellent documentary of a tale that may initially conclude as the music industry's final straw with musicians and fans alike. Unfortunately, author John Alderman might have jumped the gun with timing the release of this book, because the war over 'all things MP3' is just now starting to heat up. With that being said, "Sonic Boom" is surely your best bet for research on music copyright and the conflict over its piracy. More importantly, however, this book explicitly warns the music industry about repeating mistakes of the past: ignoring technological advances, and the Internet's definite position in the future of music sales. It covers the twists and turns of the over-celebrated court case against Napster, while underlining how the collapse of traditional economics of the music industry was not completely inevitable. Alderman repeatedly returns to the notion that if different decisions had been made at particular moments, it might have been possible to preserve copyright within cyberspace. According to the author, the failure to create a virtual marketplace for selling music was a fatal error. Instead of using all their lobbying power and legal resources to attack the Net, the industry's corporate leaders should have been working out qualms in developing technologies, so that the fan and musician would prosper in today's rapid Internet growth. However, copyright laws were strengthened, Napster was prosecuted, and blocking software was developed to "kill" Peer2Peer sharing. Alderman argues that despite these triumphs, all these efforts only delay the inevitable.

Good book, quick read, and definitely a few years ahead of its time. As legal action against copyright infringement and Peer2Peer sharing heats up ($17,000 settlements among colleges and their students), intelligence of John Alderman's caliber is as necessary today as it has ever been.

5 out of 5 stars The Answer's Out There Somewhere.......2002-10-04

While slightly outdated (mid-2001), and displaying some typos as well as Alderman's slightly scatterbrained writing style, this short but effective book is a telling report on how the world of music distribution is experiencing a true upheaval. Unfortunately, nurtured by the free-for-all of the internet revolution, the expectation that all music should be free led to the free file sharing services. File sharing is certainly a great way to stick it to the big companies that have unapologetically ripped of musicians and consumers for decades. But the problem is that artists deserve to be compensated for their music, so free file sharing is not the answer. The rash of lawsuits by the big corporations proved that they only have their own profiteering at heart, and their insistence that they are fighting for artists' rights is a farce. The highlight of this book is an excellent quote from online music pioneer John Barlow to close chapter 1: "The greatest constraint on future liberties may not come from government but from corporate legal departments laboring to protect by force what can no longer be protected by practical efficiency or general social consent." That is the angle from which Alderman writes this book. The big labels, through lawsuits and intimidation, refuse to face the fact that they may be toppled by a revolution and have reacted like any fading strong-arm dictator. As soon as someone figures out how to properly compensate the artists, all fans and musicians, as well as culture in general, will benefit beyond comprehension. Alderman doesn't pretend to know the answer, and nobody does anyway, but this book proves aptly that something dramatic is happening in the world of music.

5 out of 5 stars BUY da Boom (bada bing)..........2002-01-09

I ordered this book when it was first released and it sat in a big pile of "future-reads" until months later. When I finally got around to picking it up I couldn't put it down. For someone who has closely followed the digital music revolution from the early days, it was more a trip down memory lane than anything but I definately learned some interesting tidbits along the way. Chronicling approximately a 4 year span of efforts from companies and characters from the pre-Napster days (Goodnoise and Liquid) to the post-Napster era (Gnutella and the peer-to-peer craze) and everything in between, this book is a quick and fun read. If you're into music and technology and have followed the bitter but inevitable marriage of the two, you'll enjoy this historical romp down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars A good primer on digital music distribution.......2001-12-14

As the business of music distribution and consumption goes through a radical change, this is a good book for understanding how and why we got to where we are in the process. A good overview on the players, the technology and the legal and business issues involved. No one really knows where we are going from here in the music distribution business but this book lays out the history and issues so you can follow the fascinating developments.

5 out of 5 stars Examines the advent of Napster and the response of musicians.......2001-10-17

What happens when rock stars fight business over copyright issues and online downloads? Sonic Boom examines the advent of Napster, the response of musicians, and the fans who have come to view access to free music as a right. Blend in assessments of new technologies and key issues of artists' rights and you have an absorbing musical and cultural history.

5 out of 5 stars very good job.......2005-09-16

After reading the entire series i have to say i really enjoyed this series. my favorite part was waiting for delwin moonbeam a hippy "crazy" with psycadelic armour showing up doing anything and everything that noone in there right mind would do. i still fall on the floor laughing when i picture him standing down a 10 foot tall wolf headed demon with an invisible light saber with voiced sound effects. or drawing peace signs with a laser scapel on a glitterboy (for those who dont know what that is think a 15 foot tall super mega tank that can destroy just about anything in one hit) i realize that the editing job was very bad but after the first few chapters you just overlook it and keep going. i recommend this series to just about everyone into role playing games. if you dont like it then you need to find a sense of humor.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-08-10

For all those Rifts fans out there, this book is the first of a series that lets you delve into the theme of one of your favorite RPGs.

Although the book definately needed to hit a second editer (the Author should definately look into getting a spellcheck program on his computer) But spelling errors aside, I enjoyed this book so much that I went out and ordered the day one once I finished it.

The book has a broad cast of colorful characters that insure that there is a favorite character for any reader. Delving into the rifts mindset, roleplayers may find new idea's and more understanding of how the rifts themed world works.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book I Ever Read.......2002-08-20

It seems that everyone who reviews this book says to "forget the editing". Well, you CAN'T forget the editing, because it is so glaringly atrocious. Sentences chopped up, paragraphs cut in two, random (and not so random) misspellings, every instance of the word "crazy" capitalized. It was a chore to read, and if I hadn't been interested in the Rifts setting to begin with I'd have thrown it away after reading the first chapter.

My other complaint was with the writing itself. There is a very large cast of charecters with little to distinguish them from each other. Even their names are unmemorable: Mike, Dave, Dan, etc. I had to make up a "dramatis personae" list just to keep track of who was who. And please... military officers on first name basis with their troops?

The only redeeming feature of the book was that it did have some interesting descriptions of life in the Coalition States and the world of the Rifts role-playing game. But I've read much better gaming fiction for free on the internet. Sorry... two thumbs down.

4 out of 5 stars Still An Excellent Book.......2002-05-26

As any Rifts fan will tell you this book is a must have. What I would like to say is dont let the editng fool you. Once you have pushed your way through this title and on to the next in the series, you will be glad you did. The editing mistakes that are apparent in this title was due to a computer snafu at the printers (so it is said) and much editing was lost when this book went to print.

I still say this was an excellent book. The characters are true to the Rifts world and will bring new ideas to your game. read this and the other two in the series and you will not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Boom almost bust.......2002-03-26

Adam Chilson's first novel, Sonic Boom, is a must-have for all Rifts fans. Unfortunately, it's also a must-have for all copy editors, as it's what NOT to do when editing a book.

I had to deduct a whole two stars for the horrible and sloppy editing of the book, with all the spelling errors, fractured sentences, and misplaced words.

On the plus side, anyone who loves Rifts will enjoy the look into the Coalition States and the translation of the rules into a readable story.

The book also boosts a promising start into an exciting series and with many excellent and varied characters.

5 out of 5 stars Stanley H. Kaplan - Test Pilot.......2002-02-23

The only thing wrong with this passionate memoir by test-pioneer Stanley H. Kaplan, is the title. It sounds like it's a book about an air-force test pilot. In fact the feisty and fascinating teacher, and author of the eponymous memoir is an academic Horatio Alger, someone who developed his obsessive need to help others learn into a billion-dollar empire with global reach. Is there anyone who has not heard of Kaplan Centers, Kaplan S.A.T? Stanley H Kaplan was just a bit brighter than everyone else in Brooklyn seventy years ago when he began tutoring students in his basement. In his eighties today, and feisty as ever, he will stop on a dime to answer the questions of any kid on the street who is having difficulty with an algebra problem. If you want to be entertained, inspired, amused, and impressed by a master teacher and raconteur, a genuine original who tells your the real skinny about how he beat the odds and conquered the world, "Stanley H. Kaplan - Test Pilot" is the book for you.

                Book Description

Whether it’s in a casino, a private club, an online poker room—or even many friendly home games—when a woman sits down to play poker, she’s usually facing men, and those men are going to typecast her as being too passive to be competitive. Guess what? She’s got them right where she wants them! Women have a tremendous natural advantage at the poker table. Now it’s just a matter of learning how to exploit it.

Written for female players who are in ever greater numbers catching poker-mania—60 million people a month are now playing poker and 30% are women— Outplaying the Boys is a street-smart guide to the green-felt jungle. By Cat Hulbert, whom Card Player magazine ranked as one of the top seven-card stud players in the world, its 125 annotated tips are filled with strategy, wisdom, and lessongiving anecdotes. How to project a winning image. How to choose the most profitable table—a talkative table will yield more than a quiet one—and the best seats (avoid the chair closest to the expert players). How to recognize and squelch your own tells. Who to bluff—the new player, the player who just made a comeback, the guy who comments on how tight you are. And who not to bluff—the short stack, the maniac who calls everything. Understanding your innate strengths and weaknesses—honing intuition, curbing your instinct to be too trusting, getting into opponents’ heads. The book covers two key games—Texas Hold’em and Seven-Card Stud—and provides a glossary of terms, recommended books, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Cat's humor and knowledge is captured!.......2006-01-03

I am a student of Cat's and this book has captured not only her knowledge when it comes to poker but also her great sense of humor. This isn't a book to teach you how to play but one that will help you with some winning methods that the boys have no clue about. An easy read because of the smaller sections and infusion of tips and humor!

5 out of 5 stars Another rave for Ms. Hulbert.......2005-12-14

As a poker player for over 30 years, I know many of the tips Cat gives us in her book, but I had to learn them the hard way. She spells them out in an entertaining, easy to read manner. The only good thing is most people probably won't incorporate these valuable nuggets into their play; most will forget all the good advice when they get into the heat of battle, at least I hope so.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book! I highly recommend it for any female poker player!.......2005-12-13

I purchased this book a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is "Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Cat Hulbert". I have learned some very valuable tips from you, some I would have had to learn the hard way and some I've already learned the hard way, too. Thank you for sharing your experiences and giving away some of your tips! I've been playing poker for about 18 months and your book came to me at the right time. This book is a refreshing change from the standard poker strategy books on the market. I've applied some of the suggestions and they've already helped me in poker and in life.

I first saw Cat Hulbert on a Travel Channel special about Las Vegas, poker, and gambling. The show featured her Poker 4 Girls classes and Cat offered some valuable tips about how women approach gambling. I've been a fan ever since and I gleaned some self-awareness about my own poker playing behavior from that episode that helped me change my game play. I highly recommend this book for any woman that wants to improve her poker playing skills.

5 out of 5 stars Not for WOMEN only.......2005-12-12

I only wish I had a copy of "Outplayong the Boys" when I first started playing poker in the early 80's! The information in this book is invaluable. Every tip should be practiced diligently by new and more seasoned players alike. Cat's humorous style of writing will keep you giggling and learning at the same time. A must read for all poker players, women and men alike..

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Gift.......2005-12-06

This book is great. I enjoyed reading every page of it as the tips were great and the writing style even better. As a rather experienced poker player, I found the tips right on the money and explained concepts that even many "experts" are not aware of. As a university instructor, I wished my texts were written in this manner--my students would learn a lot more and have a lot more fun reading!

I'm buying over a dozen of these as Christmas presents, so I guess I'm putting my money where my mouth is.

                Buy it and enjoy!
