    Book Description

Since his death in 1996, Krzysztof Kieslowski has remained the best-known contemporary Polish filmmaker and one of the most popular and respected European directors, internationally renowned for his ambitious Decalogue and Three Colors trilogy.

In this new addition to the Directors'Cuts series, Marek Haltof provides a comprehensive study of Kieslowski's cinema, discussing industrial practices in Poland and stressing that the director did not fit the traditional image of a "great" East-Central European auteur. He draws a fascinating portrait of the stridently independent director's work, noting that Kieslowski was not afraid to express unpopular views in film or in life. Haltof also shows how the director's work remains unique in the context of Polish documentary and narrative cinema.

5 out of 5 stars Love Mega Sudoku.......2007-07-26

I used my scanner to enlarge the mega sudoku to a full page size. It makes it soooo much easier to work. I wish I had kept the pages after I copied them. I'm considering buying the book again just to get more copies. I am no longer interested in 9 x 9 sudoku.

      5 out of 5 stars Beware addictive 25 x 25 grids!.......2007-05-03

I had been doing the regular 9x9 grids for awhile when I bought this book. Seeking more of a challenge, I skipped the regular puzzles & went straight for the mega puzzles. Aside from them being small, I have had no trouble solving them in the actual book using mechanical pencils (and reading glasses). Each one has taken several hours & I've gotten more than my money's worth just from these 10 puzzles alone. I'm almost done with the last 25x25 puzzle & I'm wishing I had made copies of the puzzles before working them in the book so I could go back & do them again sometime because I'm having trouble finding any more 25x25 puzzles. After doing the big puzzles, you won't want to go back to boring 9x9's.

      1 out of 5 stars Ultimate?!?.......2006-12-08

Ok, so this is the "Ultimate Sudoku Challenge" in whose universe????
A complete waste of money for anyone who is looking for a challenge, and too much money to pay for the 25x25 grid puzzles at the end which are just annoying ( Unless you enjoy doing your puzzles through a magnifying glass )

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate schmultimate - too darn easy!.......2006-11-17

Worked several of the puzzles at the start of this book in about an hour - all quite easy. Skipped to the very last regular puzzle in the book and solved it in about 30 minutes. Tossed book in garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging without requiring guessing.......2006-11-06

I just finished solving the last of the 190 9x9 puzzles, having purchased the book 8 months ago while stuck out of town with a blown car engine. Each puzzle can be solved strictly through logic. No guesses were needed. I find that I averaged around 20 minutes per puzzle, with a few being simpler and a few stumping me for a while. As such, I've definitely gotten my money's worth on this book and am moving on to 2 others that I bought at the same time (Mensa Sudoku and Second Degree Black Beld Sudoku) - we'll see how those match up. And, like everyone else, I haven't tried the 25x25 grids yet. Maybe after I finish the other 2 books...

5 out of 5 stars Let me tell you something, .......2006-06-27

Let me tell you something: Since I started doing sudoku, less than a year ago, my life has changed in numerous impressive ways. My reflexes are sharper. My attention and concentration have improved. I am meditating again. My blood pressure is lower. My heart rate is lower. My tendonitis has been healed. Believe me. My finances are finally in order. I forgave the people that have wronged me. I asked for forgiveness from the people that I had wronged. I thanked the people who deserved my gratitude.

The brain is like a muscle. It needs exercise. Ordering bad American movies on Netflix does not work out your brain. Puzzles do. Sure, you can do crossword puzzles, but they are really annoying with those stupid little clues. I know those so-called crossword puzzle experts have just memorized a bunch of useless clues (like soap opera star names) and common three or four letter words that no one uses in everyday speech. I like the jumble a little, my mother pushed those on me in exchange for attempting sudoku. They are a little crossword puzzle-ish but you are rearranging letters, running through different combinations and permutations in your head, so a little more satisfying to me. But I don't want to knock anything. Do what you like.

But, we know from published studies in the Geriatric Psych literature that elderly people do better mentally and physically when they exercise their minds. So learn knew things. Do sudoku. Read good books. Write your family's history. Even if you don't think you're old yet. You're not as young as you used to be, so keep those new connections sprouting (it's not the number of neurons, not the size of neurons, but the number of synapses, the number of unique connections between neurons within the brain).

This is a good sudoku book. Nice balance of skill levels. Will Shortz always does a good job with these books.

Buy it. Buy it for an elderly buddy who thinks they're too old to learn new things.

Millions have succumbed to the phenomenon of Suduko, and it has spawned thousands of books, websites and daily puzzles in a number of national newspapers throughout the world. Yet in Japan, home of Sudoku, Kakro, or Kakuro is a far bigger phenomenon, appearing in over 70 different magazines and newspapers with over one million Kakuro books sold to date.

While Sudoku uses a straightforward grid, a Kakuro consists of filled and empty cells similar to a crossword puzzle. Some black cells contain a diagonal slash with numbers in them, the clues, creating exciting, addictive puzzles that will allow the growing army of Sudoku fans to stay one step ahead of the game.

This affectionate, immensely enjoyable biography offers a fascinating look at this versatile actor, known for his award-winning performances in series like ³The Sweeney,² ³Inspector Morse,² and ³Kavanagh QC,² as well as for his work on stage and screen.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Very revealing!.......2005-09-26

What can I say? From his early days dealing with London "bad boys" in "The Sweeney" (shut it!), through to his more thoughtful policing of the murder hot-bed of Oxford (I live only a few miles away, and I can tell you it's one of the most violent places on earth) it is apparent that Mr. Thaw was one of our proud country's greatest policemen.

3 out of 5 stars something the bios forgot to mention.......2004-04-05

John Thaw had a wooden leg, right side, knee down! Just watch him walk.
I loved watching him, miss him.

1 out of 5 stars A Shallow Attempt By Author.......2004-02-22

I Agree With John's wife in the review of this book. The only reason I purchased it was to get more insite into John and his life. Being a huge fan of John Thaw and his work, I found it to be quite shallow and very repeditive on certain issues. Many facts in the book seemed to be incorrect as well. Although I found the photos in the book a nice touch, I thought that the writer focused too much on certain issues and aspects of John's life that John himself found to be incorrect and almost offensive.I'm looking forward to the release of Shiela's Book in Fall of 2004, about her husband, friend and the Talented Late actor whom I'm sure we all miss very much.I will definately purchase that publication as I'm sure it will give John's fans a correct view of his career and his life, which was cut far too short by his death from Cancer on Feb 21/02. John was probably one of the greatest British actors that I have ever seen, and It's my opinion that the author if this book didn't do him the justice he deserved. I still find it hard to comprehend that John is no longer with us and that we will never see any more new work from him .So, please don't waste your money on this book and wait for Sheila's Book to be published. You'll be glad that you did.

1 out of 5 stars Dont buy this book.......2002-04-09

As his wife I can tell you that John disliked this book intensely. It was not authorised and is full of misrepresentations and inventions. I urge you not to read it.

            4 out of 5 stars I miss Inspector Morse.........2002-03-23

and wanted to learn more about the man behind the "Morse" code, having been a fan for YEARS! He was indeed a talented actor - and lived life true to his Capricornian nature. This book allowed me to spend time with him in a way I would not otherwise have been able, so I disagree with the reviews saying negative things. I do think he left things out that we will never know; it is his right to do so. He held a longstanding grudge against his mother for leaving him at a young age, but at least he had a wonderful father.....many people don't even have that, so beyond one mention of it was overdone.. He also repeated phrases about his wife when once would have done the job; I don't know why he felt the need to do that - perhaps a fear in him (I can only speculate.) Still I remain a huge and devoted fan of John Thaw and Inspector Morse. I have bought his movies and am glad I had the pleasure of learning more about him thru his book. After all, we are, each of us, only simple human beings.

            Book Description

Sheila Hancock's moving memoir of her life with husband John Thaw, star of the Inspector Morse series.
In this unique double biography, Sheila Hancock chronicles her life and the life of her husband John Thaw, one of the finest actors of his generation, who was beloved as Inspector Morse in the long-running TV series and who later starred later in life in A Year in Provence. The Two of Us is an utterly compelling portrait of their lives-personal and professional, together and apart-against the rich backdrop of the film and theater worlds of the late twentieth century.
When John Thaw arrived at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art on scholarship, he felt like an outsider. In fact, his timing was perfect: it was the sixties and the arena of television was just opening up. Fame came quickly, but it was John's role as Morse that made him an icon around the world. In 1974 John married Sheila Hancock, with whom he shared a working-class background and a RADA education. Sheila was already a television star herself and went on to become the first female artistic director at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Theirs was a sometimes turbulent, always passionate relationship, and Sheila describes their lives together, weathering overwork and the pressures of celebrity, drink and cancer, with honesty and piercing intelligence.
The Two of Us is a remarkable book-a biography of a born actor and a tender, often heartbreaking memoir of a marriage. Full of insight and vivid memories, it evokes two lives lived to the utmost.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely but oh, so bittersweet.......2007-02-12

For anyone who is a devoted John Thaw fan,(he was the BEST as far as I'm concerned), this is a book that you MUST read. Not only is it a tribute to his talent but it is a love letter from the love of his life. I brushed away many a tear while reading this wonderful but heartbreaking book.
Not only is this an intelligently written book by his wife, an accomplished actress herself, but she shares many photos of John's personal and professional life.
            It was wonderful.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Love.......2006-12-16

I bought this book because I and my wife so admired John Thaw the actor,
Morse, Cavanagh, Mr. Tom, A Year in Province etc. This not your typical
biography of a great actor it's much more. This is a moving story of a
women's deep love of a very flawed and troubled man. Her fears of losing him and her eventual loss of him hits home to anyone who has lost someone
that was the love of their life. She has written a deeply personel story,
and given words to thoughts we all have at the loss of one we so loved.
This book touched me deeply, it's what we all will face eventually as
the one who is dying or the one left behind. There is no gloss here
She portrays their life as it was and who they were. John Thaw was a

5 out of 5 stars Vomit And Love.......2005-10-19

An entertaining tell-all by Sheila Hancock, an actress of whom I had never heard before picking up this book on a whim. As it happens I like the title.

She has many great stories about growing up in some shabby corners of England, and becoming an actress of some repute, as well as a sex symbol on English TV. It sounds as though she's had some limited success in movies, but mostly, I suppose, if you don't watch a lot of British TV from the 70s and 80s, you might not have heard of her.

I never heard of her husband either, but he was also a British TV star who played a cop in two long running series, one based on the Inspector Morse novels by Colin Dexter. His name was John Thaw and most of Hancock's book centers on him, her feelings for him, the complicated romantic relationships of the pair, and mostly about the alcoholism that, left unchecked, turned him into a human monster. Hancock relates some stories about Thaw's working class background that indicate he had vast reservoirs of resentment that fueled his masterful stage appearances. But he wasn't an easy husband, nor a good father; not until the end when, under the light of a guiding star called Udi Eichler, he learned to stop drinking and to sober up. Even though I never heard of any of the characters, I found myself intensely interested in Sheila Hancock's story. I wanted her to be happy, and I wanted John to come to his senses and stop throwing away the good things he had. And yes, all these things came to pass. Alas! Just when he was getting it together (personally speaking), he was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, and so he had only a short time to enjoy this late-blooming springtime of sobriety.

She uses her own diaries and those of her late husband, to good effect. What could be more wrenching than the dream journal of alcoholic John? "Came upstairs. Sheila came out of study. Looks me up and down. I look down. See there is vomit over my jacket and trousers." She might have been a termagant to the poor guy, but believe me, she had every right to be. In some ways she was an enabler, but as we see, she has a heart as big as Blackpool, and a more loveable show biz memoir you won't read for eons. There are, incidentally, a plethora of anecdotes about the famous friends and acquaintances of the couple, including some priceless stories about Peter O'Toole, no acting slouch himself, a man who idolized John Thaw.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Better Auto-/Bios in a Long, Long Time.......2005-10-03

I knew of Sheila Hancock's work long before the introduction of "Morse" on American television. She is a fine stage and film actress whose talent won my respect in a piece of camp called "The Anniversary!" That she is also a remarkably fine writer came as a pleasant surprise. Her presentation, side-by-side time lines as well as contemporary "diary entries" for chapter headings is a very creative technique--and, for the most part, quite successful. One does get a measure of the man that WAS John Thaw; but, I came away with a greater sense of the woman who IS Sheila Hancock. The concluding pages are truly gut-wrenching! (My only complaint: the font used for the U.S. edition is hard on the eyes!)

4 out of 5 stars The Man behind Morse and Kavanagh.......2005-09-02

A famous and rightly very popular British actor, John Thaw. We know him so well as Inspector Morse and Kavanagh QC, but how much do we know about the man himself? Thanks to Sheila Hancock's dual biography and autobiography "The Two of Us" we now know a great deal. Thankfully this book is utterly frank and there can be few secrets of their lives that have been hidden. I'm not sure I even knew that Sheila Hancock and John Thaw were husband and wife until reading this book. Sheila was born in 1933, a pre-war child, and John 9 years later during the war. John was born into a very poor family and the defining moment, which was to influence the rest of his life, was when his mother walked out on him and his brother when he was just 7 years old.

Sheila preceded John through the same London drama school (RADA) but it wasn't until about 10 years later that they met when cast together in a play. Sheila was about to lose her first husband to cancer. John and Sheila marry with each bringing a daughter to the union from their earlier marriages. Of course, as is often the way, they produce another daughter to give them a happy trio.

The story progresses through more than the average couple's share of real life dramas, from alcoholism, depression and cancer to separation. Sheila's love, inner strength, determination and courage is essentially what gets them through these troubled times to a happy reconciliation and final few years together before John's untimely death in 2002.

Between and within the biographical chapters are constant references to current affairs, political events, elections, wars, acts of terrorism and other bookmarks in time. Sheila does not hide her left wing opinions but tells little of John's political views.

The book ends with Sheila living on in desperate sorrow after John's death. She does try to find about more about John's late mother - whose funeral he did not attend - and what might have driven her to abandon her sons and leave such a mark on her beloved husband.

Whilst I loved this book I was frustrated by the large number of bit part players, maybe one every couple of pages, who came and went without really adding to the thread. Occasionally it was assumed that the reader would recall an earlier reference to one of these characters from many chapters earlier. In my case it was just too difficult. All in all this is a very interesting, open and readable biography of one of TV's most recognizable and well-loved contemporary characters
