Book Description

Intimate family photos and interviews reveal Spielberg behind the scenes

From Jaws to E.T. to Schindler's List to Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg has created many of the most popular and respected movies ever made. Now, through extensive interviews with Spielberg's family, with the stars of his films, and with the people he has worked with most closely, Susan Goldman Rubin presents the definitive portrait of a man whose childhood paved the path he would take as an artist.

A wealth of behind-the-scenes information allows readers to look at the creative process up close. Full of never-before-seen, one-of-a-kind family photographs, this fast-paced biography will inspire young people everywhere.

A chapter is devoted to the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, the nonprofit organization Spielberg established to videotape and preserve the testimonies of Holocaust survivors, and a portion of the profits from this book will go to support the foundation's work.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting read with beautiful photos!.......2007-09-19

This is a beautiful little book. I enjoyed reading Ms. Rubin's text just as much as the photos. It reads more like a novel than a bio. including little known facts and personal interviews of his family and friends. She makes a point to illustrate the early influences of Steven's family and school life that later became themes for his movies. It is a very intimate look into Speilburg's personal and professional journey. Ms. Rubin has included many formerly unpublished photos. It all adds up to a wonderful read and certainly a lovely addition to your library, especially if you are a fan of Spielberg's work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Photographs and Information.......2003-10-15

This is a pretty good decent sized book about both Spielberg's life growing up and his most successful movies such as Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Jurrasic Park and Saving Private Ryan to name a few. There are some great colour photographs from the movies along with a lot of information. If you like the films he has done or are interested in his life then this would have to be one of the best books out there on that subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Quality Book........2003-02-26

Great book for the 9-14 age group or anyone older looking for a light read. Lots and lots of interesting pictures of Spieberg's childhood, early career and blockbuster movies and behind-the-scene production. Well written and a high quality book.

5 out of 5 stars "Grandly forgetting the present".......2006-03-11

I would like to relate to you all the occasion of my first encounter with "A Mammal's Notebook". I had found a copy in my university's library. On the train-ride home that same day I started to read. I found Satie's words and satirical sense of humour so delightful that it was impossible for me to put the book away when my train ride came to an end, so my 20-minute walk home became a half hour walk-read with occcasional bursts of laughter. (I guess I looked a little strange, but one often feels compelled to do strange things when immersed in the eccentric world of Satie, who was a true maverick.) Since that time, I have spent many an hour enthralled by this book. (Luckily, I have since invested in my own copy)

Now, I may be a little obsessive, but I think many others will also enjoy A Mammal's Notebook.

    About the contents:

Satie is an enigmatic character. He very rarely discussed his own composition processes, so if you are looking for that, you will not find it here.

    What you will find includes:
    -A mini biography and timeline
-Translations of the witty and mysterious texts that accompany many of his pieces.
-A list of Satie's eccentric performance markings translated to English (e.g. Almost invisible..., Avoid any sacrilegious excitement... Grandly forgetting the present,... etc)
-Articles which he wrote for publication (on various topics: his contemporaries, the art of reading aloud, books, etc.)
    -Transcriptions of speeches
-Other writings and musings which weren't intended for publication
-Sketches (of unusual architectural constructions, boats, etc.)

The only thing missing here is an analysis of the material included, but that point is forgivable as there analyses out there. (I would encourage other readers not to skip the end notes as these do give context to some of the items included.)

    A highly recomended collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A most wonderful Book!.......1999-07-27

This book gives a delightful introduction to the life, letters and drawings of Erik Satie, one of the greatest artistic minds of the century. Although his music is his foremost contribution to the world, his writings and drawings express his gently humourous and damning views of the world and offer tremendous insight to his musical work. The book includes a list of the directions his wrote in his musical scores, which are marvellously absurdist. The drawings include the many somewhat enigmatic "advertisement" drawings he made in later life as well as Memoirs of an amnesiac and A mammmal's Notebook. There is also a libretto for a ballet which Satie presented to the directors of the Paris Opera (it was refused) as well as a play with incidental music. Satie's work has been very well translated and quite a bit of it is in both translation and the origonal french, which is lovely if you speak french and enables you to realize how good the translation is. Also, there are no annoying, silly views on Satie by stodgy editors and biographers. One can draw one's own conclusions.I cannot imagine a better book on Satie.

This is the world's best of the best book for any musician. It is well written, comprehensive and informative. A must have for any musician.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for touring musicians!.......2006-04-16

This book is great. My company currently handles booking for touring bands, and the contact information is among the best you can find anywhere. They supply you with not only a name and number for the venues, but you also get important information like capacity, stage size, genres of music they book and names of people that can actually get your bands booked. I highly recommed this to anyone in the business who is touring or looking to tour. They also provide information for record labels, distribution, radio stations, music stores and publications to help promote and market your product. This book is a must have for all working musicians!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond my expectations..........2001-04-27

I've spent a lot of time and a lot of money on my musical career. I've spent money on equipment, rehearsal studio time, recording studio time and other music biz books, bibles and blah, blah, blah. The best investment I ever made was...on this publication. This is really the best resource I have found when it comes to working your musical career. Trust me, I've tried a few of them. It's got so much "useful" (the operative word here) information, I'm impressed every time I refer to it. I use it & use it & use it. I rarely sing the praises of music business companies, but THANK GOD for the people that do all this research & put out The Musician's Atlas!! If you want to find opportunities to work your musical career effectively and efficiently, this is the thing to get. The way I see it, you can get an Atlas and DO something with your music OR spend your 25 bucks on a sausage and onion pizza, a six pack of Coors and listen to your music in your living room wondering when that BIG BREAK will drop in your lap. Get realistic. GET THE MUSICIAN'S ATLAS and GET TO WORK!!! Sincerely, Jerry Tanner, musician, song writer, engineer, producer, Grammy nominee.

      5 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2001-04-25

This book is an indispensible tool for anyone who is serious about making, promoting and performing music. This is the second edition I've owned and have used this and previous issues to book gigs all across the country. The information in this book is much more detailed than directories that cost more than twice the price. I've given this book to friends who've tried more than once to borrow and not return my copy. This book has paid for itself over and over again!

2 out of 5 stars Club List Incomplete.......2001-03-08

The concept is great, but the list of clubs could easily be double the size. I was hoping to use the book to help me plan some regional touring around different parts of the US, but it hasn't helped much in some cities. (Even venues where I've played before aren't listed in the book.) The other very disappointing element of the publication is the number of advertisements. It's essentially a glorified magazine...

3 out of 5 stars Just Not Big Enough.......2001-01-26

The good thing about this book is that it covers so many areas of the music business. The problem is they spread themselves too thin. Few of the listings seemed complete. It might be enough to get started but if this book is for beginners than there seems to be a lack of tips and info. The interviews that the do have are very informative. If this book was twice, three times, or ten times as thick it could become an indespencable tool. The way the book is now I think it's probably better to go several more specialized sources.

To longtime sales and customer-service pro Jeffrey Gitomer, boasting about a near-perfect customer-satisfaction rating of 97.5 percent is a major mistake. "That means 2.5 percent of your customers are mad and they're telling everyone. And 97.5 percent of your customers will shop anyplace the next time they go to market for your product or service." Based on a philosophy that's been developed through his syndicated business columns and the more than 150 seminars that he gives each year to companies such as Radisson, Sony, NationsBank, and Time Warner Cable, the book outlines his formula for making customers so faithful they "will fight before they switch--and they will proactively refer people to buy from you." Regularly employing oversized type in screaming bold fonts to grab the reader's attention, Gitomer breathlessly recounts his start-to-finish approach to becoming "memorable" to consumers along with illustrative tales of his own encounters with particularly egregious examples of poor service. All of this is bolstered by an ongoing sampling of his inspirational quips and a variety of self-evaluating quizzes designed to pinpoint individual strengths and weaknesses. Take a deep breath, read it straight through, and prepare to delight thy customer! --Howard Rothman

Easy read, great information. Solid tips. Relates to all sales jobs, and All Sales associates who "want" to succeed, will get it!

                                  5 out of 5 stars Awsome Read!!!.......2007-05-26

I was able to apply some of his ideas on the very next customer that came into my store! This is a MUST READ for the way a customer service employee (or boss) should treat every customer - whether on-line or in-person. This should be required reading in every business class in the country.

Just a fabulous book about customer service. Fun, practical and inspiring to say the least. I email some of the best ideas out to our team every day. I am really enjoying this book!

5 out of 5 stars Customer service....who really can define it?.......2007-01-19

This book is very easy to read. I personally read it in less than 1 week because all the recomendations and practical advices of Gitomer really are sense common and any organization would have a tremendous benefit if do apply at least the 40% of the customer service rules listed by this book. Also offers information about why the customer satisfaction is the lowest level for a long term relationship and why a loyal customer should be the goal to get for any person involved in the sales and marketing world. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre. Mostly personal experiences........2007-01-09

While not terribly wrong, this book is not really good either. It shares the author's experiences and his point of view, but isn't more helpful than any other book that does the same. The font settings are actaully annoying.
