Book Description
This guide for actors and directors develops a valid method for training performers to act from their core--whether they are cold reading, auditioning, or performing for film or television. This book teaches actors how to achieve and respond to believable and honest emotions before the camera, and it maintains that the key to a successful performance lies in how the actors relate to one another and to the circumstances. Exercises, including script examples, throughout the book give readers an easy resource for practicing the principles outlined.
The Art of Film Acting applies a classic stage acting method (Stanislavsky) to the more intimate medium of performing before a camera, teaching readers to experience an emotion rather than to indicate it.
*Applies a proven method to screen acting
*Includes exercises and practice material
*Helps actors train themselves to relate and respond

Like Being In Class.......2007-01-10
Loved this book! The author's writing style is easy to understand. A lot of the book is an actual script of what happened in his class - the students dialog and his (the teacher). The students read scripts with each other and he instructs/helps them improve their acting. Highly recommended for the beginning actor!
Brilliant Insight In A Simplified Approach To Film Acting.......2003-11-05
Jeremiah's ability to convey such a clean and concise approach to film acting is endlessly refreshing, especially to the working actor overhwhelmed by the endless masses of techniques and methods out there. He strips acting down to its very essence and truth through his emphasis on being in the moment and on developing ones skills of observation and listening. His simple wisdom reminds us of what we already know-- what we knew as children and chose to forget-- the endless wonder of a human face, the natural expression of unjudged emotion, how to live openly in the present without expectation, to trust unwaveringly in the given circumstances. Truly a great work and one every actor, director, artist or film enthusiast should have. I will read this book again and again and I do not doubt that one day it will be a staple in any serious actor's collection. Excellent.
A must read.......2003-02-14
Jeremiah has an honest approach when presenting this book. It is very useful, and a definite book to have on your shelf. I have found myself unable to put it down. I would recommend this book for any type of actor wanting to understand and practice his craft too the best of his ability.
A definitive instructional manual for training performers to act from their core .......2002-12-08
In "The Art Of Film Acting: A Guide For Actors And Directors", Jeremiah Comey draws upon his more than 25 years of experience and expertise in teaching film acting (include the several years in Hollywood he spent acting in feature films, television sitcoms, soap operas, industrial films, and commercials, as well as directed several short films) to provide a definitive instructional manual for training performers to act from their core -- whether they are doing a cold read, auditioning, or performing. Aspiring actors will learn how to manifest honest and believable emotions before the camera, relate to other actors and the their circumstances as those cameras roll. Enhanced throughout with exercises and script examples, students of acting are provided with an easily accessible resources designed for practicing the outlined principles as they pursue a mastery of their craft. Practical, "user friendly", informed and informative, "Guide To Naturalization Records Of The United States" is a core addition to any personal, professional, or academic Theatrical Studies resource and reference collection.
The "Bible" of the Industry.......2002-08-22
The book is absorbing: I Read it in one day. It is formatted in such a way that it clearly conveys what the exercises are all about.
Since reading it I began lookin at people anew, really focusing on them (as I handn't in years). I found people facinating again. I tried to discern what or how they felt about something in a FLash (You know, Fear, Love, Angry,Sad or Happy).
In the Years to come, I prohesize that The Art Of Film Acting will be regarded as the "Bible" of the Industry.

Do Your Homework.......2007-01-30
Actors, take some time to read this book before setting out on your next audition. As one of my old drama professors used to say, it might give you a jolt of "Theatrical Realities" -- and since that old professor was Harold Lang, star of "Pal Joey" and "Kiss Me, Kate," He knew how hard those realities could be. It all boils down to, "What do THEY want?"

Book Description
Tony Macklin shares with his readers the interviews he conducted during the 1970s with many of Hollywood's greatest stars. Because it was an era where the Old Hollywood was still extant, and the new cinema was burgeoning, he was able to meet the old with the new--actors, directors, producers, writers--and make some of his own memories along the way. Interviews with old masters Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks are juxtaposed with the new breed Martin Scorsese and Alan Rudolph and the mavericks Robert Altman and Sam Peckinpah. Icons such as John Wayne and Edith Head are included, as well as relative newcomers Stockard Channing and Richard Baskin.

A Master Interviews the Masters.......2001-06-19
When teaching film and television in Los Angeles, I had the luxury of having top industry professionals visit my classes. This is simply not possible at universities distant from the major centers of production. However, with Tony Macklin's unique and special tome, I can have many of the all-time greats "visit" my class anywhere. VOICES FROM THE SET will be required reading for all future "Masters of American Cinema" courses I teach-- anywhere...ever.
At its best.......2001-04-17
Probably the only work available that pairs a film scholar/interviewer with the masters of the screen. Obviously a must for any film enthusiast.
ACTION!.......2001-01-06
VOICES FROM THE SET is a MUST READ for all film historians, film students and cinephiles. Macklin gains amazing insight into the working lives of such screen legends as The Duke, Altman, Beatty and Peckinpah, all captured in rare form. This is an excellent read.
Voices is a Rare Treasure.......2000-11-08
Tony Macklin's collection of interviews, Voices from the Set, provides us remarkable reflections by some of Hollywood's greats--reflections of a Hollywood balanced at the crossroads of its artistic Golden Age and the modern-day blockbuster. Macklin's interviews with such influential film greats as Hitchcock, Altman, Scorsese, Heston, Hawks, Peckinpah, Wayne, and Beatty give us a fresh look at many of old Hollywood's most powerful, while providing us a peek at some of new Hollywood's up-and-comers.
Macklin, in skillfully eliciting responses that are compelling, honest, and human, allows us to witness a side of Hollywood that is rarely seen. Voices from the Set's subjects are willing to talk to Macklin, and Macklin is willing to give us the full transcripts of his interviews. No sound bite answers here. Macklin asks the tough, thought-provoking questions and we are rewarded with direct, insightful answers.
Both fans and students of film will not be disappointed in this book. Virtually every interview in Voices will sing to you.
Talk to me!.......2000-10-17
Voices From the Set is Tony Macklin's collection of interviews from the magazine he edited, the Film Heritage series. Exploring an underappreciated era in film, the early to mid 1970s, Macklin gathered interviews with directors, actors, producers, writers, even film critics who blazened a trail for independent cinema between the twilight years of the studio system and the birth of the blockbuster. The book is meant to be savored one interview at a time, and should give you a great list of films to rent if you're not familiar with them. In his introduction, Macklin calls this particular group of interviews "precious cameos that gain more value as time passes." His discussions include several maverick filmmakers still influential today, such as Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah and Warren Beatty. Voices also captures the essence of legendary directors and actors Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Charlton Heston and Macklin's favorite, John Wayne. Macklin artfully probes below the surface and discusses the artists' feelings and visions, not just dry facts and dates. In the Scorsese interview, Macklin asks him for his opinion on "the new Hollywood" during the early to mid '70s. Scorsese talks at length about this group of influential filmmakers graduating from universities, himself numbering amoung them. He succinctly sums up the era and the reason for reading this book: "They [the old Hollywood] took it as a job...we come in from a whole different level...The old day is dying out, and there is a new Hollywood..."

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful selection of music.......2007-02-01
Bought this at a university bookstore some years ago (6 CDs). Wonderful selection of music (and some accompanying paintings) from early music like chant to the weird modern experimental art stuff.
A good introductory text.......2002-07-19
I have had this book prescribed as a textbook for a music history and theory course. This is a good book for such a purpose, it covers much. (This review is on the third edition).
Unit I has 5 chapters covering the fundamentals of musical theory. Sound, time, pitch, structure, form and style. Unit II is a 4-chapter overview of early music, starting with the Middle Ages. Unit III covers the 18th century in 6 chapters, starting with Late Baroque. Unit IV focuses on the 19th century, starting with Beethoven and finishing with the Late Romantics in 5 chapters.
Unit V: The Twentieth Century, was my favourite section. The prelude chapter discusses the concepts of music and modernism. The next chapter covers the early 20th century, then there is a chapter on alternatives to modernism, and the fourth chapter covers the late 20the century. Chapter 24 focuses on music in America: Jazz.
The book is organised around listening samples. These are available on a set of a 6 accompanying CDs. I liked the samples chosen. The late 20th century chapter, for example, discussed works by Ligeti, Berio, Varese, Cage, Crumb, Leon, Gubaidulina and Reich.
An alternative to "Listen" is Music: An appreciation" by Roger Kamien. It seems to me to have a bit more on artistic context, whilst at the same time covering more topics at slightly more depth.
However, "Listen" is well organised (always a good sign), and richly illustrated. Historical events are touched upon, and there is some reference to other art forms in context with the music of the time. I would recommend it as an introductory text even if you don't need to read it for school. Of course a book like this can cover topics only to a limited depth.
You Will Find It More and More Interesting.......2000-08-29
With the accompanied 6 CDs, Joseph Kerman has written one of the most interesting and comprehensive introductory music text. Not so much a memory-and-fact type of textbook, Kerman's uncanny ability to describe music experience has made this a success. Students do not need musicianship prerequisite to read this book. From ancient to modern, the book gives a broad overview of some of the masterpieces with insights and explanations. Excellent reading. (Note: The 6 CD set mentioned in this review is sold separately, and is not included in the price of the book. -Ed.)
comprehensive history of Western music.......2000-05-28
This book makes learning about music interesting and fun. It begins talking about basic structures of music (rhythm, harmony, tonality, etc.) but mostly follows the history of recorded music starting from the Middle Ages through Baroque to Jazz. It does a good job relating the development of music to other artistic developments of the time, like painting and architecture. With the CD you can listen right along and learn a lot of interesting things about music a novice like me had never thought about before.
Customer Reviews:
Playing poker with a straight head.......2007-09-17
Pretty solid book. Helps getting you in the right state of mind when playing poker. I believe this is crucial to your game and have enjoyed the book. Easy to read and a good flow to it. Definitely feel like its improved my game and would recommend it. Just to give you a comparison I have read the following and thought they were solid poker books as well: Super System, Harrington on Hold'em, Phil Gordon's little green book, Caro's Book of Tells, and In the Money Strategies for winning texas Hold'em cash games. I have read other poker books but don't think they are worth purchasing.....GOOD LUCK!
Too advanced for poker retards........2007-03-08
It's no wonder some of you poker bandwagon jumpers hated this book. It's much too advanced for you. This isn't one of those cookie-cutter books that every por is writing right now to make a few bucks. This is a serious look at the philosophy of poker, written by a self-proclaimed amatuer. The best piece of advice in this book regards becoming a poker professional. "When should I turn pro?" someone asks. John answers "Probably never." It's wisdom like that which makes this book so valuable.
John gives out his email address in the version I read and I decided to write him with a question. He answered me, and gave me some good advice. What a stud. This is the best poker book I've ever read, and I've read about 40 of them. Trust me.
The worst book ever!!!!!.......2006-04-21
This is the worst book I have ever read about poker, and I have more than 20.This is not a book for serious poker player at all,it may teach some compulsive gamblers how to reduce their losses but nothing more.I paid $4 for it and I regret for buying it,don't waste your money.(I am not surprised that used copy of it goes for $1+shipping)
Don't waste your time or money.......2006-03-02
This book is worthless. Full of rediculous advice that will get you "killed" at the poker table. I tried some of these techniques and it ruined my game. If you need to get a book, get one from an actual poker player. This guy is simply a writer trying to sell some books. For those of you who said this book was great and improved your game... I have some land to sell you!
You won't look at poker the same way!.......2006-01-18
Killer Poker teaches you how to look at yourself and your poker game in a whole new way. It gives you the tools you'll need to be a great player. I recommend it highly as it turned my poker game from a basic solid break-even style to a dynamic winning style. If you play poker: GET THIS BOOK!
