3 out of 5 stars Worth a Look, a Bit of Trivia, Bit of Gossip, Take the Quiz!.......2007-09-30

This book is good introduction to the various genres it covers. There are a lot bigger books on each of the topics that go into a lot more depth but if this is on the shelf of your local library or the newsagent stand and you're looking for a light read before you get on that plane, bus or train then give it a go.

The chapters are pretty short and there are not that many entries in each but what's there is entertaining, although you may well know a lot of it already. You'll learn the jobs some celebrities did before they made it in Hollywood. This book briefly looks at failed spin offs, if you're into this topic check out the book Jump the Shark: When Good Things Go Bad for a much more comprehensive book on that topic. The actual names of many TV/Movie celebrities fill a chapter. The most original chapter is probably the Antics of Acting Animals where we learn interesting trivia about real animal stars such as Lassie, Flipper and so on as well as fake animals like Kermit and Big Bird. Embarrassing Celebrity Scandals is pretty much just a cut and paste job from a few tabloid celebrity magazines. Where are they now child stars is another chapter and you even get to do the ultimate television/movie quiz at the end of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent blues songs.......2006-01-13

I agree with the very detailed review by a_reader_999. The only comment I can make is, you can purchase the indivudual songs and listen to previews of Kenny's music at the Apple Music Store - everything except Sick Boogie. Not only is this cost effective, but you can stop and playback songs from iTunes much easier than from a CD.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch material.......2005-09-26

Kenny has done it again. Acoustic fingerstyle blues students have once again received some truly golden learning opportunities.

I don't know just how much credit I can claim, but I emailed Kenny a few years back and practically begged him to release a book that contained not just the framework of songs, but whole songs, including different chord voicings, fills and runs and turnarounds and essentially everything a student would need to know to play a song, instead of playing a basic 12-bar several times.

That's exactly what Kenny has delivered in this book. It's his top-drawer, grade-A material that he's sharing here. Not many performing artists would be willing to do that, I think. So I feel like we students owe him a debt of gratitude.

The material ranges from Lightnin' Hopkins-style blues to very tappy-toe ragtime, and it's all just a ton of fun to listen to, and to play. It's all in standard tuning, no slide involved. There are certain points where Kenny does something really difficult--a quick turnaround with 9th chords, for instance--where he provides reasonable alternatives (using 7th chords instead). Nice touch. He moves at a faster pace in this book than his previous books, but he's covering a lot more material, too.

I must say that I was a tad disappointed--irritated, even--when I discovered that the CD that comes with the book does not by any means contain all of the music in the book. Mostly, the CD covers the main themes in the songs. To hear everything, you have to order not one, but two of Kenny's other CD's, i.e., not instructional CD's, but his commercial releases.

But then I realized that it would take a lot to cover all of the material in the songs. Not to mention that there are probably copyright issues on reproducing entire songs, even if they are from Kenny's own CD's. And beyond that, if you add up the price of this book, and the two other CD's, and then you consider what a goldmine of terrific material you're getting, this is the bargain of the millennium. Excuse my hyperbole, but I've already picked up so many new things from this book, as I have from his other books, that I find it hard to speak calmly about Kenny's work.

Beginner students should be advised that this material is probably beyond them. There are always exceptions, of course. Some beginners are fiercely determined (not to mention more talented than I), and can tackle more challenging material. When I was starting to learn fingerstyle, this stuff would have simply killed me, and made me feel helpless. So in general, I think beginners are better off with Kenny's first two books. (The first is no longer in print, I think, but "Acoustic Blues Guitar" is, and it's excellent for beginners.)

In a way, working through this book has made me a little sad. I've come to realize that my own playing, and my own musical knowledge, have reached a point where soon I won't need books or ideas any more. Even as I started working on the first song, I immediately had alternate ideas that I started throwing in (many of which I learned from Kenny's earlier books). I've reached the point where I hear a run in my head that's different from Kenny's, and I can figure it out and work it into the song in place of something Kenny offers. So although I've never met Kenny, I feel nevertheless like this is almost the end of a personal relationship, because I've (nearly) outgrown the need for help with my playing.

I've bought maybe 200 guitar books over the years, a sizeable number of which are devoted to acoustic fingerstyle blues. Kenny's are not the only books that have helped me. But his outweigh all the others by a large margin. I can honestly say that, if it weren't for his book, "Acoustic Blues Guitar," I might have--probably would have--given up for good on fingerstyle. Now, five years later, I've reached the point where I'm ready to play open mics, and I can improvise at will on ragtime themes. (You just can't imagine what that means to your own soul until you actually do it for the first time.) I don't discount the importance of my own hard work and dedication in making that happen, but Kenny's help was also of fundamental importance.

This book for intermediate-level guitarists is a follow-up to Kenny's Introduction to Acoustic Blues. It covers blues in five different keys and positions, and incorporates slide or bottleneck playing in both open and standard tunings. All songs are primarily fingerstyle with a monotone bass used for most. The accompanying 70-minute CD features performances of every example and song, played slowly then up to speed to facilitate learning.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very cool blues with great instruction!.......2007-09-04

Kenny Sultan makes learning to play blues guitar fun and enjoyable. The book comes with a CD so you can hear how each piece sounds. Kenny plays each song twice. First time it's slow so you can begin learning by playing along. Then again, at regular speed, which is good to work up to.
Kenny gives short explainations with each piece that I find helpful. The book shows music in standard notation and TAB. It starts with easier pieces in the beginning. You'll meet some good old time blues players and get a chance to try slide guitar at the end. This is a GREAT book!

4 out of 5 stars Just me.......2007-08-10

I would love to find a book, cd/dvd set that would teach the blues from the beginning. This book does not do that. This book will be alot beter for me after I spend a few years playing and then move on to the blues. This book also has tab so if you don't know how to read music you can still play. It is just not for beginner guitarist.

3 out of 5 stars Fun book, but won't teach a lot.......2004-07-04

Very fun book if you just want to impress your friends with a couple of nice songs (above all the not-Kenny songs are worthwile). Good for a starter to learn some blues basics (though picking technique is not explained at all!!!). But, if you are an intermediate that looks for a jump forward, beware: this book won't teach you a lot, no scale, no harmony, no improvisation, just some nice tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-01-02

This is a great book. If you've never played the blues before, like me, this is the book for you. You start out with some basic shuffels and move right into some fun and impressive songs. It takes some focus and practice but by working with the book and CD a little every day, you'll find new joy and passion in that old accoustic sitting in the corner. If you're sick of strumming through songs and want to let the guitar "sing" for you, you won't regret buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow -- Good tunes.......2003-04-26

While I haven't put much time into practicing, it's not hard to see why this book and CD get great reviews. Sulton starts you out with some basic moves, and progresses into some great tunes that will definitely impress you and your friends. His teaching style is very laid back, and his pace is easy going.

I would say that anybody who has the time to practice these songs, regardless of your playing level, will master them quickly. And, by using what you've learned here, it would be easy to improvise and come up with some similar tunes of your own.

4 out of 5 stars The Blues Styles of Kenny Sultan was great........2006-11-10

This is another great book by Kenny Sultan. He gives you some idea's on how to spruce up your blues playing. I am an intermediate player and this book was great. Not too difficult and not too easy. The stuff I am learning really has a good sound to it.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny's a star.......2004-05-25

Great book and CD! Kenny takes you through the steps in a format that's easy to follow and enjoy. The songs and examples are fun to play and great examples of blues fingerstyle fun. Some fingerstyle playing experience is needed so the newbie to the guitar may struggle to get the timing and changes but for most players this is a great book and CD!

Check out Kenny's DVD - I purchased the DVD at the same time and it's got some great tips and tricks. Plus, it's just fun watching a pro work...

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent book from Kenny.......2003-12-12

I have two of Kenny's previous books, and I owe much of my fingerstyle playing ability to him. I've found other excellent books in the past few years, but his are still my favorites. And this one has plenty of new material, even if there is also some overlap with his previous books.

The material ranges from beginner to advanced intermediate, mostly the latter. If you're just starting to learn guitar, I'd go with Kenny's first book. This book has some stuff in it that would have been very difficult (probably too difficult) for me three years ago.

But if you have at least some fingerstyle experience, the material you will find here is challenging but playable, and tons of fun. If you have Kenny's previous books, and you've already learned all of the material in them, you will probably be able to sit down and start playing these songs almost immediately. Maybe that means they're not challenging enough for an experienced player. But I picked up a bunch of new chops from this book, so it was well worth the price.

Any book Kenny releases in the future, I will snag at the very first opportunity.

    Book Description

The purpose of this book is to present a primary introduction for the early intermediate player to acoustic blues guitar. Through instructional text and actual songs, the author covers blues in five different keys and positions and shows how they can be adapted to any key. Along with the basic blues rhythms and leads, fingerstyle blues is covered, using both an alternating and monotone bass. The author also touches on the specific techniques of various well-known players, open tuning, and bottleneck guitar. The accompanying cassette tape includes each example and every song, most of which are played in slow speed and at regular tempo.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Accoustic Blues Guitar........2000-11-01

This book is ideal if: a)you know the basic guitar chords and the basic notes of the fret b)you are still essentially a beginner.

This book is an ideal introduction to the basic blues techniques and sounds. It covers, amongst others, slides, bends, bottle kneck playing and also open D tuning. The cassette is very useful for hearing how the songs should be played.

I have one major criticism, which is that the book suffers from a [minor] lack of conent. With a few more songs included, this book would be perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel to 25 Bridge Conventions by same authors!.......2004-09-25

One of the best-selling books on bridge, and an essential for novice / intermediate players, is Barbara Seagram's (with Marc Smith) popular text "25 Bridge Conventions You Should Know." We picked up a copy of this follow-on -- "25 Ways to Compete..." -- guessing that it would be the same quality as the earlier book and hopefully just as interesting and useful. We were not to be disappointed!

Like "25 Conventions", "25 Ways" has 25 chapters, each covering different methods for getting into the auction once the opponents have opened the bidding. Rather than organize these topics somewhat at random by difficulty, this book organizes the topics by broad competitive area, dividing the discussions into six groups: Suit Overcalls (5 chapters); Takeout Doubles (4); Notrump Overcalls (2); 1NT Defenses (3); Bidding over Preempts (5); and General Competitive Issues (6). While some of the chapters are as short as 5 or 6 pages, others go into more detail by presenting more alternatives. For example, the chapter on conventional defenses over a 1NT opening describes Landy, Cappelletti, and DONT, while mentioning that plenty of others exist. As Eddie Kantar points out in his forward, there are even chapters (his favorites) introducing the subjects of the Law of Total Tricks and Hand Evaluation.

While some of this material can be handled by advanced beginners, we suspect most of the techniques will appeal to intermediate players {experts will probably have already traversed most of these roads!}. Sometimes it takes frustration with current bidding limitations to see the real motivation behind many of the methods disclosed herein. But the chapter summaries, sample problems, and explanatory answers echo the quality we discovered in the author's other work. To become a nastier opponent, get yourself a copy of "25 Ways"!

As CEO at accounting giant KPMG, Eugene O'Kelly was so immersed in his job that over the course of a decade, he managed to have lunch with his wife on weekdays just twice. His travel schedule was set 18 months out. Once, he was so obsessed with impressing a potential client that he tracked down the man's travel schedule, booked the seat next to him on a flight, schmoozed the guy all the way to Australia, landed the account, and flew immediately back to Manhattan. His Type-A ways vanished when, at age 53, a top neurosurgeon in New York told him he had late- stage brain cancer. "His eyes told me I would die soon. It was late spring. I had seen my last autumn in New York." [p.7]

There are no TV-movie-style miracle treatments or extensions of his life expectancy; he's told he has maybe 3 months, and he doesn't spend any energy hoping for a cure. True to his CEO style, he creates goals for himself, lists of friends to visit for the last time; he meditates; he tries to create as many "Perfect Moments" that he can, during dinner or phone conversations with friends, and realized how few rare those moments of connection and joy were in his "previous life."[p116] "Chasing Daylight" is as much a self-criticism of his job-before- family ways as it is a meditation on time and a transition to a tranquil, spiritual state utterly foreign to him as a CEO. O'Kelly's absolutely more fulfilled by the soul work that he finishes in 100 days, compared to his 30 years of corporate promotions and accolades, and he utterly convinces readers to ponder their own situation, whether "in the gloaming" of life as he was or not.--Erica Jorgensen

        Book Description

“Must the end of life be the worst part?

Can it be made the best?”

At 53, Eugene O'Kelly was in the full swing of life. Chairman and CEO of KPMG, one of the largest U.S. accounting firms, he enjoyed a successful career and drew happiness from his wife, children, family, and close friends. He was thinking ahead: the next business trip, the firm's continued success, weekend plans with his wife, his daughter's first day of eighth grade.

Then in May 2005, Gene was diagnosed with late-stage brain cancer and given three to six months to live. Just like that.

Now a growing darkness was absorbing the bright future he had seen for himself. He would have to change his plans, quickly, and capture what he could of his last diminishing days.

Chasing Daylight is the account of his final journey. Starting from the time of his diagnosis and concluded upon his death less than four months later, this book is his unforgettable story.

With startling intimacy, it chronicles the dissolution of Eugene O'Kelly's life and his gradual awakening to a more profound understanding. Interweaving unsettling details of his battle with cancer with his moment-to-moment reflections on life and death, love and success, spirituality and the search for meaning, it provides a testament to the power of the human spirit and a compelling message about how to live a more vivid, balanced, and meaningful life.

Inspiring, passionate, deeply insightful, Chasing Daylight is a remarkable man's poignant farewell to a beloved world.

5 out of 5 stars Living While Dying.......2007-09-10

Few people have written about the steps they had taken to live while waiting to die. Few of us know when our deaths will come come and we live paying little attention to others and how precious the time we have is to ourselves. The author of this book takes us with him in ways that teach us how to live better in our own time that is left. This a one of the best legacies an author has ever provided.

3 out of 5 stars Tragic story but short on learnings ..........2007-07-09

Not what I had hoped for or even expected. I feel for his family, especially his 14 year old daughter, who he only talked about a relationship to the end. It is well documented and I believe authentic and sad to me. Even when facing death he had to be the CEO telling people what they should feel and deciding on his 'three' eulogies and who should give them and in one case even writing part of it. Sad for his family who he admits he was always traveling for his beloved company. If there is a message in here it is that he may be the first guy to say 'if I just had one more day at the office.' The entire book to me is centered on the fact that he talked of his love for his daughter all the while saying his good byes for three weeks to business associates and in the end never took the trip he promised her before he died. I guess there are some learnings but not what he intended to write. Disappointed for sure.

        4 out of 5 stars Death of a Planner.......2007-07-05

This book is incredible from many viewpoints and is an honest and authentic account of what he went through when he was confronted with death. Death is something that we all have many pre-conceived notions about, but is something that we truly don't understand consciously. This book shows his struggles to embrace death. From that point of view, it is an authentic account.

The rest is plainly my judgment and should only be read as such. This book is not spiritual in content and it is clearly evident that had he not been diagnosed, the author would not also have any inclination to consider death. This memoir can be viewed as an account of someone who built up an identity and then even in the moment of death, could not let go of that identity. It is a memoir of someone who was struggling and trying to control their death. It was someone who was trying to create some meaning out of their death as the meaning for which he had lived his life was now broken in pieces.

I mean no disrespect in stating the above, but it is simply an honest observation. However, I did not expect the work to be any different than it was or to expect it to be better than it was. It was what it was because the author was what he was. I rate this book with 4 stars for its authenticity.

Although it was a touching story I'd hate for people to sympathize with O'Kelly. He lived a fast-paced life as a CEO. I think he realized he had developed more business relationships than truly close, personal ones. He spends 3 weeks `unwinding' with people described merely as `business associates'. His family dealt with this even through his last weeks of life.

Not only did the family relationship annoy me but the fact that I don't think he really learned anything. Sure, he became less business-like and more relationship-based. Still, he seemed to be desperately making up for lost time (and failing).

There were a few good take-aways: he finished his life peacefully and ready to "transition", he tried to make the best of a bad situation, he was fortunate to be healthy and lucid in his final days. He was lucky... sort of.

He admittedly missed most of his daughter's life growing up. With a CEO schedule, no wonder. Plus, he died before he had the chance to take her on their final vacation together (she was 14) to Prague.

Probably because he was spending his time closing up relationships with his `associates' early on...

4 out of 5 stars A businessman's struggle to live in the present.......2007-05-21

I recommend this book even though it didn't give me what I was looking for: an understanding of death and dying. The book may help some people. Many of the reviewers said that it did. But to me it lacked depth. Perhaps because I've faced so many deaths this past year, one of them being the death of a child, I suppose I was searching for and needing more than a book can give. If you want a book to help you accept your own death or the impending death of a loved one, this isn't it.

Yet, it DOES help to collect various perspectives on death and dying to piece together your own conclusion--in this case, one from a CEO, a Type A businessman and his struggle to live in the present. At one point O'Kelly writes, "You'd think that with only three months to live, I'd be pretty good at enjoying every moment, of staying in the present. You'd think."

A previous reviewer suggested that human beings aren't "hardwired" to live in the present. Maybe so. But I think it's a case of social conditioning. As Aristotle said, "We are what we repeatedly do. . . . Men acquire a particular quality by constantly acting a particular way. You become just by performing just actions, temperate by performing temperate actions, brave by performing brave actions."

Perhaps we become present-moment thinkers when we practice it every day. This is precisely what O'Kelly learned. After 30 years of scheduling his calendar 18-months out, he struggled to stay focused on living in the present. To him, it became a matter of exercising a "lax muscle." So he practiced, step by step, to achieve Perfect Moments. In the end he found that the best moments were the "days that unfolded without planning," he concluded. "What would my life have been," he asks "if I had let spontaneity play a greater part?"

For this, I recommend the book. And I'm grateful to O'Kelly for allowing us to accompany him on his journey into the Shadow of Death. But I ached for him to tell me more. More of what he was thinking. Really thinking. More of what he expected death to be, and more about what a dying person wants from those close to him who look on helplessly.

Finally, I thank him for showing me the error of long goodbyes. He includes a quotation from a book by Elizabeth Bibesco,

"It is never good dwelling on goodbyes. It is not the being together that it prolongs, it's the parting."

O'Kelly appreciated one of his friends just saying goodbye and hanging up the phone after the conversation, rather than lingering on.

Make your goodbyes short and sweet. A wonderful lesson.

        Book Description

In this inspiring book (formerly Seizing Your Divine Moment), Erwin McManus uses the biblical account of Israel's war with the Philistines (1 Samuel 13 and 14) and the characters of Saul and Jonathan to demonstrate the difference between living a life of purpose and adventure, and living one of apathy and missed opportunity. In the midst of a less-than-hopeful battle, Saul rested beneath a tree as Jonathan seized the divine moment that would impact the future of Israel. Through this story McManus artfully illustrates the eight characteristics of an adventurer's heart, what he calls "the Jonathan factor."

Using powerful examples from his own life and ministry, along with fresh biblical teaching, McManus asserts that God crafts divine moments specific to each of us-priceless opportunities for us to actively engage in God's plan. By developing the characteristics McManus outlines, Christians can move from mundane to miraculous living.

        5 out of 5 stars Adrenal Spirituality........2007-09-15

Chasing Daylight: Seizing the Power of Every Moment is the"Red Bull" of devotional books, a passionate call to action. Erwin McManus is, in his own words, "a husband, father, writer, futurist, activist, artist, and a spiritual and cultural leader." Chasing Daylight embodies McManus' high octane approach to life and spirituality.

Chasing Daylight is an invitation to view Christianity as something more than mere "sin management." For McManus, faith is adventure, and each second of our life is an on-ramp to living life purposefully. McManus uses language that feels alien to a discussion of Christianity, but shouldn't--courage, initiative, risk, embracing uncertainty, influence, and movement. These traits should be the buzzwords of every believer.

The narrative of Jonathan and his shield bearer choosing to attack the Philistine camp without support (1 Samuel 14) makes up the backbone of the book. Pastor Erwin sees Jonathan as a temple of personal discipleship. We see a need that only a God-energized agent can meet and attack it. McManus calls this the Jonathan Factor, and he believes that this should be a standard feature of every Christ-follower.

Chasing Daylight is filled with personal stories from Erwin's personal life and from the life of his congregation. McManus has gone where he's calling others to go. His stories of starting out as a pastor and risking his financial security and reputation for the sake of God's calling gives him the credibility to dare others from their lives of complacency. The story of how his church, Mosaic, risked looking foolish in their quest to begin influencing north Los Angeles resonated deeply in me.

McManus also weaves references from pop culture and fictional diary entries of a mysterious character, Aydan, to simultaneously add familiarity and mystery to his book. Chasing Daylight is intense, urgent, and fast.

It's hard to find a fault with this book, other than it cost me some sleep. I started reading the book in bed, thinking I'd take in a chapter before falling asleep. However, McManus' writing pushed every leadership and motivational button in my body. It's like singing "Eye of the Tiger" to your infant as a lullaby. It's impossible to read this book with a detached perspective; you'll find yourself personally engaged in the call to spend your life well.

Chasing Daylight is a great book for anyone needing a jolt from complacency, living in a rut, or even laziness. This is the perfect gift for the graduates in your life who are just beginning to launch their adult lives.

5 out of 5 stars Seize this book!.......2007-07-01

I recommend this book to everyone, young and old Christians alike! I read it, then my daughter, and then we bought more copies to pass along to her friends. McManus shares personal experiences to show how God STILL moves and wants us to MOVE for Him. You should take one more step of faith and buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars It will change your life.......2007-04-03

If you are a born-again believer, this one will put feet to your Christian walk the likes of which you have not experienced. It will encourage you to live aggressively.

5 out of 5 stars Drink this up.......2007-03-31

Caution! Reading this book may be hazardous to a stale, comfy faith!

Mcmanus is one of my favorite authors and this is one of my favorite books by him. If you've read Fearless Faith by John Fisher or Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchannan...this is very similiar.

This book will stretch you. I encourage you to read, think deeply, and apply personally the main ideas presented in this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Be Careful!!.......2007-01-09

Don't read this book if you are in love with the status quo. Don't read this book if you want to eek out a meager existence in the land of the mediocre! Erwin McManus takes a in-depth look at the risks that Jonathan took and translates that into challenges for the reader to make the same kind of difference in their world. Read Chasing Daylight if you want God to use it to spur you on to taking steps of faith.
