Great Collection of Movies from the 80s.......2006-07-08
Taschen Books about the "Great movies of the xx Decade" are expensive but they're paid by themselves, if you are a movie fan these books should be in your personnal library.
Don't expect all the movies you like to appear in the book, that's my only complain, they don't specify how did the choose them, is it because they're important to the era? because the won a lot of awards? because they're personally mr. jurgen muller favorites? Well I guess it's hard to please everyone.

Good reading, lacks some information and some great movies.......2004-01-16
This book is overall a good one, it has great pictures and some interesting, sometimes even insightful, commentaries. Too bad the text is minimal, could have more information, from where I am standing. Moreover, it also could have portrayed more marvelous movies of the 80's.
Where are, amongst other great titles missing, Raiders of The Lost Ark, The Return of Jedi, some of Fellini's pictures, the James Bond films? The lack of some major eighties films are inexcusable. It's clear that the book has been biased by the author, otherwise, which are the criteria for saying that those 145 films chosen were the major and most important productions of that decade? From which point of view are these films the most influencial, from the box office, from the public acclaim, from the critic?
Anyway, the edition has a gorgeous binding and the quality of the printing is also very fine, however, its flaws, besides the lack of some good films from the eighties, are the lack of more important information about each movie, namely: box office figures, premiére dates, entire credits list and so on. I think it also would be great if they could show the official poster of each film.
That's why it gets only 3 stars, but nevertheless, an enjoyable reading and a good addition to any movie aficionados.

Book Description
Gaga for Ghostbusters? Get the guide. Step right up and get your fill of 80s nostalgia with the movie bible to end all movie bibles. We've diligently compiled a list of 140 of the most influential movies of the 1980s that's sure to please popcorn gobblers and highbrow chin-strokers alike. The 80s was a time for adventurers, an era of excess, pomp, and bravado. In the era when mullets and shoulder pads were all the rage, moviegoers got their kicks from flicks as wide-ranging as Blade Runner, When Harry Met Sally, and Blue Velvet. Without a doubt, sci-fi was the most important genre of the decade, with non-human characters like E.T. winning the hearts of millions while the slimy creatures from Aliens became the stuff of nightmares and movies like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future fused comedy and sci-fi to the delight of audiences everywhere. In fact, the 1980s saw the invention of a new reality, a movieworld so convincingly real - no matter now far-fetched - that spectators could not help but abandon hemselves to it. Now that's entertainment, folks.

Good read for any movie buff........2007-05-01
Good book, pretty cheap considering it's hardcover. Lots of large colour photos, it covers most of the major hollywood movies of the 80's ( and there sure were some great ones ) as well as some foreign movies.
The introduction is a bit airy fairy, but the rest is good, makes me want to get out the movies he talks about that I haven't seen yet.

This huge colour encyclopedia is a look at some of the more popular movies of the 80's. Note it is not a comprehensive listing and a substantial number of great movies are not contained within. This book seems to concentrate on movies which have won Oscars as each has an Oscar rating. It's a good book for the movies contained within but for a book of its huge size a lot more could have been included. I would recommend Film Posters of the 80's - the Essential Movies of the Decade instead of this book.

Book Description
The Najdorf is the most popular line of the Sicilian Defence for a very good reason: Black can play for a win without taking undue risks. The Najdorf's fundamental soundness has been confirmed in countless top-level games, and in particular by Garry Kasparov's successful use of it throughout his career. White has tried a wide variety of approaches against the Najdorf, including quiet positional lines and the traditional main line with 6 Bg5. Recently the idea of a rapid kingside pawn advance has found favour. The Najdorf's landscape changes rapidly, and this presents its devotees with a complex task: they must not only keep up-to-date with sharp theoretical lines, but must also have a firm grasp of the strategies that underpin the main systems, both old and new. This book lends a helping hand to those who play the Najdorf or wish to take up this complex opening. Two Najdorf experts from Spain present a flexible repertoire for Black, including a wealth of original analysis of the critical variations. They also explain the key ideas behind the Najdorf, focusing on those plans that are most relevant to modern practice.
Customer Reviews:
The only Najdorf book you will ever need.......2006-09-09
A brilliant book, co-authored by two grandmasters Julen Arizmendi and Javier Moreno - the back cover says Julen Arizmendi is an IM, but he became a GM soon after the book was published in 2004.
Julen visited the Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club in Auckland, New Zealand in early 2006 and gave us a session on the Slav Defence. Julen was very clear and logical. His best advice was to make "sensible moves" (to build on your advantage). That is the same approach in this book. They give good clear, logical advice and make sensible choices of lines.
I only found two errors. Page 120, when it refers to Topalov as Black instead of Kasparov. But then I didn't even know how to spell Topalov and had to ask Julen, as I had only returned to playing this year after a rest of 22 years! So what's the difference between two greats? Page 159 24...Qf2 should be 24...Qf7 in game 36.
There is no Games Index, or the ECO classifications that I found handy in Lev Psakhis' books on the French Defence. I have the set of four, and they are similar in layout to Mastering the Najdorf. The latter has a more comprehensive write up at the beginning of each chapter, explaining why they recommend a certain line. All these books provide the full games to the main lines, which is so important. How often have you been frustrated by an openings book which concludes a line with "unclear" and leaves you wondering what happened and who won? Does that instil confidence in you to play the line? Why a Games Index? Well, I wouldn't want a book like Understanding the Kings Indian where Golubev uses his own games in the main lines. I want to know that some world class rated player plays a particular line, as that gives me more confidence. Not that Golubev isn't but I think you get the message. The authors have used games from big names like Anand, Byrne, Topalov, Shirov, and Kasparov. In fact of the 52 main line games the authors have only used three of their own games, which says something about their humbleness and about other egotistic authors.
This is a repertoire book for Black. It is not a complete book on the Najdorf. You just can't fit all of the Najdorf in 224 pages. So the authors have recommended one line for each of White's major responses. If you play the Najdorf their choices will probably suit your style - solid lines but allowing you as Black to unbalance the position and provide chances for an aggressive player. Otherwise you probably shouldn't be playing the Najdorf!
The Boleslavsky 6 Be2 has 39 pages, an indication of its theoretical significance. The recommended and proven response here is 6...e5. The positional 6 g3 has 20 pages, probably a major work in this under investigated and "strategically complex" line. The recommended response here is also 6...e5. The 6 f4 line has 16 pages, with 6...e5 as the recommended response. The English Attack 6 Be3 and 7 f3 has 50 pages, a clear indication that it has taken over as the main line and as the only try for an advantage for White in the Najdorf. The recommended response here is also 6...e5. It does not mention 6...Ng4 which suits me as I think it is totally unsound - a bit like "here I am, hit me". When I found the English Attack by de Firmian and Fedorowicz published 2004 I was in shock, as I could not believe that a whole new opening had been invented whilst I was in hibernation - doing my MBA. Anyway, that book has 22 pages on the 6...Ng4 line, for those who insist on playing it. The Old Main Line 6 Bg5 has 38 pages, and recommends 7...Qc7 as the best un-refuted line after 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 a6 6 Bg5 e6 7 f4. It covers almost all of Whites replies. But it does not cover 8 Qd2, that was played against me in my latest game. It can transpose to a line that was given with 8 Bxf6 gxf6 9 Qd2 but that exchange didn't happen as I replied 8...Be7. One noticeable line that was absent was the Poisoned Pawn Variation 7...Qb6, but then this is a repertoire book, and it advocates sensible lines and ideas, rather than the long analysis that you have to memorise in the ultra sharp PPV, which is only for the masochist. For those PPV masochists Nunn and Stean have an excellent Siclian Defence: Najdorf Variation book with five chapters covering the PPV on 51 pages. It is a bit dated, published 1982 but still good for club level. But I thought 7...Be7 should have been included in this chapter, for transpositions or even if only to provide a choice. Some players can't get their heads around to accepting the doubled pawns after 8 Bxf6 gxf6. The logical answer they give is that 7...Qc7 (and 7...Nbd7) covers the e5 square. The Fischer Attack 6 Bc4 (formerly called the King's Bishop Variation but Fischer definitely deserves this recognition) has 31 pages, advocating the idea of chasing White's light-squared Bishop with 6...e6 7 Bb3 Nbd7 8 f4 Nc5. Again very logical, and protects the e6 square at the same time. Chapter 7 is on 6 a4 with 5 pages, and Chapter 8 has White's 6th move alternatives with 11 pages.
No, I didn't choose this book because Julen visited our club, I chose it because I wanted to play the Najdorf again as I wasn't getting good positions with the Taimanov. But having heard Julen was a definite bonus. I am rated 1893, and the book is written for the 1500-2300 player. I recommend you know something about the Najdorf first, but it is not absolutely necessary as the authors teach you the ideas behind the chosen lines. Buy it!! It will be the most frequently used chess book you will most likely ever own.
Mastering What?.......2006-07-14
Ok, moving past the title... this book is great attempt at providing a repertoir for Black based around playing 6...e5 for all of Whites main alternatives to 6.Bg5 and 6.Bc4. I feel like this could also have been a nice excuse to trim the book down a little (a la, transpositions to earlier chapters in the book). After 6.a4 it would seem that 6...Nc6 would be a more pertinent line to follow but, 6...e5 does the trick even if at times leading to somewhat drawish positions. In the english attack (6.Be3 or 6.f3) 6...e5 is the only move covered. This was somewhat dissapointing to me as I have been fascinated by the move 6...Ng4 for some time now. This move however, is covered extensively in Sammaivuo's book "The English Attack" which I have just recieved and also recommend.
Another important decision in the book was to recommend 7...Qc7 after 6.Bg5,e6 7.f4, thereby avoiding the dense poisoned pawn variation. This is just fine with me and I have since come to appreciate the pawn structure that arises after 8.BxN so much so that I will also try for these positions in a Classical Sicilian or other variations.
I would guess that this book is best suited for amateur players who have some time for serious study. This book helped me to realize how little I knew about the Najdorf. Part of the problem is that most people I play (online blitz or even class C or B players at the club) don't follow any critical lines. Another book that has helped me "polish the stone" in this regard is Rogozenko's "Anti-Sicilians: A Guide for Black", as I run into these systems more and more.
I'm at 1567 USCF.

Drucker lives on.......2006-03-03
This is a great tool for any working executive. It's old fashioned in the sense that you have to think and then act. I would recommend it to anyone in a management position or a potential management position.
The Effective Executive In Action.......2006-03-01
The most important workbook a leader will ever use. Essential for any leadership development program, MBA, business student, and all executives. This will change your life - just use it.
For the Reflective Practicioner.......2006-02-17
This journal is just that...a personal journal. It guides you through several thought provoking scenarios and asks you how you feel, think, what you will/can do, etc. If you do not like to think, this is not a product you will enjoy. If, however, you enjoy noodling over your own thoughts, actions, feelings, and working through them to a plan for personal/professional development, this is a must buy item.
Drucker is someone who yields more and more every time you read him. This journal will help you collect a rich harvest of useable ideas.
The Effective Executive by Peter Drucker et........2005-12-12
The author has written another classic on the dynamics of
executive management. The book suggests that organizations and
the people who run them need to assess what must be done
as a condition precedent to directing their energies productively. Time is the classic limiting factor. It applies
to the activities of everyone in the organization. The effective use of discretionary time is another important asset. The success
of organizations over time is dependent upon an uneventful
transition strategy together with the ability to continue
the business as a going concern. In Accounting, the Quasi-
Reorganization in bankruptcy provides the needed second chance
for organizations to start over again- although standard reporting requirements call for dating the retained earnings
into the future. Companies having extensive overseas operations and outsourcing must be more vigilant about disaster
recovery and contingency planning for random Acts of G-d. These
unplanned emergencies may consist of a tsunami, earthquake or
expropriation in countries where the political infrastructure
is fragile or unpredictable.
The author suggests that the organization give much thought into
choosing people and assignments to optimize organizational
strengths rather than magnifying weaknesses for short term
gain. Ultimately, maximizing strengths renders weaknesses to be
irrelevant. Each job should be structured to accommodate the
personality of the occupant(s). Accordingly, this strategy
will go a long way toward perpetuating the organization well
into the future. In addition, training and development of staff
is an important aspect of work. These activities will provide
threshold competencies so that employees can function maximally.
In addition, training assists in the development of successor
employees due to retirements, job transfers etc.
With the right people matched to the right jobs, an organization
can move forward. In addition, maximization of an individual's
strengths obviates the necessity for the classic flight/fight
phenomena in an organization. In implementation, the management philosophy aims to accentuate strengths rather than exploit weaknesses which may result in a sum zero conflict.
This rendition does not emphasize the optimal organizational
design to accomplish work, although the dynamics may vary from
firm to firm. Organizational conflicts may be reduced by
looking at the following options dispassionately:
- considering the flat organizational hierarchy with less
vertical integration, where possible
- controlling predictor information more carefully
- completing a comprehensive job and task analysis for all
company positions and vital job categories in particular
- standardizing complex operations and codifying knowledge so
that expertise is not a barrier to performing a job within
a shorter learning curve ( today artifical intelligence systems
and expert system algorithms may help accomplish this task)
- transferring employees within an organization and providing
more challenging scenarios
- providing employees a share in the ownership of the company
through stock plans or employee representation on the Board
- support and funding for staff training/development and
personal growth
- a clear and uncomplicated succession strategy
The book will assist corporate planners, human resource personnel, students of organizational design
and a large constituency of scholars in academe. It is worth
the price for the huge value of the information content contained therein.
