This book is a fascinating account of the life of Ravi Shankar. I was a little reluctant to pick up this book at first- -I thought to myself, "Ravi Shankar- pop star, a musician who lives on hype - who wants to read a fan book? If George Harrison hadn't stumbled across him, he would have been just another sitar player." But after reading this book, I have a much greater understanding and respect for Shankar and all that he has accomplished.
Shankar's early life was simply amazing. His first tour of the US was in 1932, when he was all of 12 years old. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for Shankar to be the leader in bringing Indian classical music to the West, since he spent so many of his formative years in Paris and on tour throughout Europe and the US. During this time, he became familiar with Western audiences and their expectations, as well as with Western music traditions. It is this familiarity that has enabled him to be so successful at explaining Indian music to Westerners. But as this book details, Shankar was not only popular in the West, but long before George Harrison met him, he had built a very successful career in India. For example, he was the one who did the music for film director Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, among so many other projects.
Shankar's influences on music in both India and the West are enormous and far-reaching. He was one of the first musicians to gain a following in world music, and he fought strongly against the marginalization of world music as a field only fit for ethnomusicologists. As described in this book, in India, he helped change attitudes towards musical performance and performers by demanding full attention from audiences and formal venues, much like classical performers in the West expect.
Interspersed throughout Shankar's text are short interludes from friends such as Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. The book includes hundreds of pictures that span Shankar's entire career, including the pre-World War II tours with his brother Uday. There is also a very informative glossary at the end, as well as a chronology and index.

Raga Mala is destined to be a classic of literature.
It is a biography, history, diary, and a basic primer
of Hindustani (North Indian) music.
As a beginning Sitar student under a Guru myself.
I appreciate Raviji's journey from student to master.
The life covers so many memorable moments of history.
His triumphs and pain are an inspiration to all who
are open enough to see it. There is not enough that
can be said to fully explain the depth of this book.
It is fair to say that most will not fully understand
it in one reading.
In closing, Raga Mala will be the textbook to be used
by all interested in Pandit Ravi Shankar, Indian music,
and how it has gained popularity in America since the
1960's. I recommend this book as in the top 5 of my
all time favorite books.
A colorful life story from a wonderful human being.......2001-11-13
Regardless of how you come into this book, as a Beatles fan, as an admirer of Indian classical music, or someone who studies the Indian culture, you will come out of it thinking of Ravi Shankar as someone very special, but who shares the same passion for life as many of us. "Raga Mala" is his story through his words, from his days as a dancer to traveling out of India for the first time, and eventually setting a goal to spread his music and culture around the world. With celebrity comes fame, and with fame comes admiration, and there were many women who admired him, only for he to admire them back. His love of women is at times overshadowed by his love of food, which is something I never knew before this.
But he talks about his music as his core (at point during the book he compared the sitar to his wife), and gets in-depth about his mission to enlighten people with his music. He loved the hippies but hated their lifestyle, and felt that he could make them high, and higher, with his music.
"Raga Mala" shows a well-traveled and cultured man with the utmost respect for his culture, his people, his music, and life in general. At 81 years old, he knows his "old junk of a body" can't do the things it did when he was 15, but he refuses to slow down for anyone, including himself.

Raga Mala is the autobiography of pandit Ravi Shankar,told in story,profusely illustrated{some in color}], beautifully bound {with luxurious endpapers], on high quality, beautiful papers. It tells his story{introduced by George Harrison} from his early childhood, stage[as a dancer in his brothers famous troupe] to his study of sitar and Hindustani music with a master{Khan},to his gradual emergence in the west. I had no idea, that he had performed at Carnegie hall in the 1930's, that John Coltrane's son ravi was named after him, ot that he was well known BEFORE the Monterey pop or woodstock concerts[he called woodstock"terrifying'}. This is a wonderful book, it tells the ENTIRE ARC of the life of pandit Ravi Shankar{including his apparent heir and pupil, his daughter Anoushka}, and does so with such a well put together volume. The papers, the binding, the photographic reproductions are exquisite. The publisher has done a remarkable job. A classic book, both in form and content.

A good introductory kakuro exercise set.......2006-03-01
This book presents us with a graded series of kakuro challenges.
The introduction is quite clear on strategy, although the Divide and Conquer section has a few paragraphs that hopefully will be corrected in later editions. However, Chisolm looks only at the case where a single digit has been discovered. As with Sudoku, a very useful tactic focuses on discovering pairs of cells that must choose from the same two candidates. In Kakuro one may sum the two choices and subtract from the block total to give information about the other cells. Similarly for three cells with three candidates, etc.
The challenges are presented in four levels of difficulty. The first level problems are presented on an 8 by 8 grid, the longest blocks are of length 5. The second level grids are 10 by 10. The third level are on a 10 by 12 grid, with some blocks of length 6. The fourth level are also on 10 by 12 grids, with a few length 7 blocks.
There are no length 8 or length 9 blocks.
It is possible to do the first level in ink, without having to record intermediate guesses. The proper choices are pretty much locally determined by the situation in blocks not more than two or three cells away. This is not true of later levels, in which some choices require resolution of situations at more distant cells. A good pencil and eraser is essential.
I worked through all 201 puzzles and found the book to be effective in acquiring improved facility.

Puzzles are almost impossible to solve. Many puzzles have multi-solution blocks, which are a no-no. Skip this one and keep on looking.

A true Cross Sum does not have more than one possible solution. I have run across several already in this book that have interchangeable numbers in one or more areas which would make this particularly difficult for a beginner.

Great ideas to get your creative juices flowing.......2004-11-12
I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e. cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com. I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc. It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.
Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see........2004-01-20
There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.

I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of. I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages.

This was a great idea book. Get this book before your baby even arrives to help give you pointers on what to take pictures of and things to keep for your scrapbook. Plus, it helps pass the time by! After my baby was born I still had "fetal-brain-drain" and needed ideas for page layouts. In the back there are ideas for page titles and poems to include in your baby's book. Well worth the money......

I'm a Memory Makers fan and I tend to like their idea books. This one, however, seemed fairly uninspired to me. Lots of cute pages of cute toddlers doing cute toddler things -- but nothing that really sparked my creativity for scrapping the hundreds of photos that I have of my own cute toddler.
A general scrapbooking book would probably take you just as far as this book would.

This is always out on a table for me to browse at when I get brain freeze for my page designs. There are alternatives presented to doing "traditional" pages and it covers a majority of things that toddlers are into. Would make any scrapper a great gift.
Some good ideas, but not Memory Makers' best.......2001-10-27
Well, for as much as I couldn't wait to get a copy of this, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Memory Makers' Baby Scrapbooks idea book was great--full of good layout/journaling ideas and beautiful sample layouts to look at. Maybe I'm becoming a scrapbook snob, but the first thing that rubbed me the wrong way was that the majority of the sample layouts just didn't seem up to caliber with what I'm used to seeing in their and Creating Keepsakes magazines. Too much primary colors, simple hand-printed or sticker letter titles, bland papers...I know, it sounds SO pretentious to say that, but I truly am used to seeing different types of pages in the books and magazines I buy. To its credit, Toddler Scrapbooks has a good "Checklists" page to give parents ideas on what to scrapbook that they may not have considered (e.g., funny faces, waking up, daily routines, Sunday school), and on the same page, it mentions that it's a good idea to keep notes on a calendar of: some current favorites(books, songs, etc.), Growth, milestones and firsts...There are also poems, sayings, page title ideas and reproducible patterns at the back of the book which could be useful.
To be honest, this book is probably geared toward a beginning scrapbooker, as simple techniques are covered, and the editors probably want to simply encourage parents to take the time to do this important job of preserving the family history. Scrapbooking can get quite involved, and maybe the simple layouts are there to avoid intimidating the beginner. From this standpoint, it's a good book. However, if you've been scrapbooking awhile, a lot of the info covered here can be found in Scrapbooking periodicals. It definitely wasn't worth the money in my case!

When we come home to visit the grandparents every year, we read the well worn book. My daughter is 8 and loves to read the story now too. It was one of my childhhood favorites. It really is a wonderful book for some one who is moving away or their best friend is moving way. It is too bad it is out of print!

My mom got me this book when we moved out of state; I was 9 years old and terribly missing friends and the comfort of structure. I last read it 30 yrs ago but this book stands out in my mind more than any book I've ever read as a child. A little girl makes a friend by sharing a pretty stone with her. They become "best friends" but then one of them finds out she has to move away. It doesn't try to hide or sugar coat the pain of separation, but at the end another little girl moves in to her old friend's house, and the magic of the stone works again as they get to know one another. I remember their names even - Ann, Jean and Beth... and I can still see their pretty faces so beautifully sketched. Children are resilient when it comes to friends coming and going, but nevertheless it's very stressful to go through. This book should still be in print because families are more transient today than ever. It really helped me a great deal. (I'm looking to buy it now because we are moving in 2 weeks and wanted to read it to my sons!)

The edition of this book that I have is the Whitman Small World Library book, by Gladys Baker Bond. I have the most wonderful memories of this book from when I was a child, and my children are equally entranced. The shyness and warmth between Beth and Jean, two girls who become friends by sharing a beautiful rock, is perfectly depicted by illustrator Stina Nagel. The image of the red and blue-streaked rock itself has stayed with me for over thirty years. I can't recommend this book enough for its simple and enduring message that sharing something special is the best way to make friends.

Who knew that a book could touch the lives of two scared children that moved constantly. This book is a favorite of mine and my brother. It helped us to see that moving to a new place could be an adventure shared with new friends. I am 25 and I still have the rock I collected after reading this book. This is a wonderful example of how something as simple as a rock can introduce you to friends and new beginnings.

This is a favorite book from my childhood. It was given to me by my mother when we moved to a new town. The story takes place in a city, with a lonely "new girl" in the neighborhood. She longs for a friend, and creates a special one after sharing a special stone she found in a country stream. The friends share many fun times, and often play games with the rock, this "magic friend maker". When the owner of the rock moves again, she leaves the magic friend maker with her new best friend, so that "the magic can work again." This is a wonderful book which promotes sharing, creative expression, dealing with fear & lonliness of moving, loss of a friendship and hope for another. Beautiful illustrations capture the simple joys of childhood.
