A Must Have In Your Music Library.......2006-09-19
I recieved this book and CD as a gift for my birthday. I really enjoy having this in my library. Here's your chance to be in a symphony and play along to one of the greatest movie soundtracks! -The music is clear and easy to read.
-The CD has a demo track and a play along track which has the solo removed because you are the soloist!
-This compilation will challenge and entertain any playing abilites.
-There are some nice color photos from the movie, although personally there could have been more sheet music added instead of the photos.
-The CD is fully orchestrated, and it is very pleasant to listen to.
-There is a fingering chart in the back for beginner players.
-One drawback...The CD needs tempo clicks at the begining to give you the beat of the song-especially the slower parts. Plus you don't know when to start counting, the track just suddenly starts and you can miss a beat or two and get lost if you are not an experierencd player. Also some of the music is complex to listen to and it is difficult to find the beats.
-The reasonable price gives you no excuse to not have this in your library.
Stunning.......2006-02-17
I was completely impressed with the Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos for flute.
I have been playing flute for about two years now after taking music classes both inside school and outside for additional advice. I was able to master this beautiful instrument in no time. And I hope to keep up my talent for it.
Now, the features you will expect of this book are:
- 12 featured pieces from each of the three films. These are "The Prophecy", "in Dreams", "Concerning Hobbits", "Many Meetings", "The Black Rider", "Gollum's Song", "Rohan", "Even Star", "Forth Eorlingas", "Into the West", "Steward of Gondor", and the great "Minas Tirith".
- Each piece ranges from at least one page to two; however repeats, rests, and Codas may make the piece longer.
- The book contains full sized pictures of screenshots from the movie.
- A level of playing that is challenging enough for a person of nearly any level.
- Well organized pieces that are easy to understand and read.
- A flute fingering chart at the back to make sure you are able to look up every note.
- A wonderful CD to listen to with full orchestral backup or to play along with. In my case, the demos on my CD feature a professional flutist who plays each piece. When you wish to know the tempo and speed of each piece, this really improves the experience. In fact, the CD is amazing enough to be sold as a sound track for the films by itself.
- This book is available for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Horn in F, and Trombone. This means that if any concert bands are interested in playing familiar Lord of the Rings music, the pieces will always be in key for each instrument.
In my opinion, this amazing book has completely brought me on to a new level of playing. If any of you are musicians, reading this, you know the feeling you get when you create such a soul-full, emotional piece of music that your mind and audience is touched by every note that weave themselves through each melody? This is what I felt during getting to know each piece in this book.
Howard Shore, this music is brilliant! Thank you to you and your full orchestra and team to putting this together to give musicians wonderful music to play from an inspiring trilogy of films!

!!!!!!!!.......2005-12-27
Well, i find this flute book completely wonderful, yet too easy. I suppose that would be because the whole flute concept comes easily to me (after two months of puffing along with no sound at first) But as a whole I would highly reccomend this as a flutist, Lotr fanatic and music lover. if you enjoy this, you MUST buy the sound track aswell. It is wonderfully written, and as a whole, just .. wonderful!
Book Description
This book presents standard fiddle tunes in basic form, then shows you how, on a phrase-by-phrase basis, the tunes can become vehicles for your own improvisations. It is designed to open the door to creating spontaneous variations, or improvisations, based on the melodic structure unique to each tune. Each tune in the book is presented first in its basic form, then with four variations. The variations are printed directly beneath the melody with the corresponding measures aligned, so that you can easily compare them to the original melody and to each other. The accompanying CD features mandolin and rhythm guitar on separate channels, so you can turn off the lead and play along with the rhythm, or vice versa. Intermediate in difficulty.
Customer Reviews:
Great source to develop technical musicianship on mandolin.......2003-12-08
John McGann's latest instruction book for mandolin uses eleven common fiddle tunes to demonstrate how individual melodic phrasings can by varied to give them new character and personality. The tunes explored include Flop Eared Mule, Old Joe Clark, Soldier's Joy, Whiskey Before Breakfast, Billy in the Lowground, Forked Deer, Blackberry Blossom, Salty Dog, Arkansas Traveler, Ragtime Annie and Fisher's Hornpipe. Like McGann's earlier guitar edition, this instructional material provides useful information for all levels of player. The leanest version of each tune shows, in both standard notation and tablature, the essential notes. Intermediate players will benefit from versions two and three which incorporate such embellishments as chord tones, rhythmic displacement, and scale notes. The most advanced versions of each tune also progressively include more arpeggio notes, syncopation, slides, slurs, and triplets that will definitely provide inspiration to even the most proficient musicians. John McGann, a Berklee School of Music graduate and National Mandolin Champion in 1985, is a good teacher for the job! His approach is straight-forward and clear, and some very basic introductory narrative about music theory and melodic structure is also helpful.
Each of the variations on a fiddle tune are printed, measure by measure, directly beneath the original skeletal melody line. The benefit is that you can easily compare them to each other. The downside is that playing along with the CD will require you to turn as many as four pages during the course of the one-minute tune. As you play through all five versions of a tune (in about a five minute time span), you'll feel like you've just read a book after flipping 20 pages of music or tab. I don't really see a way around this if McGann's goal was to visually portray, measure by measure, how each variation was built from the original melody. I found myself highlighting certain passages that really took my fancy, and I'll practice these ideas diligently to incorporate them into my own melodic improvisation. The CD features mandolin and rhythm guitar on separate channels, and a neutral balance on my stereo yielded way too much guitar in the mix. My preference was to adjust the balance far to the left to emphasize primarily mandolin while learning the tunes' altered forms. Then, it was fun to play along with only the guitar's rhythm track to explore McGann's ideas on my own. As McGann's ideas are used as a springboard for inspiration, the book leads players into developing their own variations.
This book and CD present an insightful approach to developing your own style of mandolin playing. The best players don't get too far from the melody, and McGann clearly shows us how to do some cool and impressive things while still preserving the foundation of the tune itself. After mastering his variations, you'll be able to pick, choose and blend your favorite licks and techniques from all of them. McGann once said, "What makes music 'Music' is emotion, light and shade, nuances in rhythm, dynamics, all the magic stuff that comes in through your ears." His fiddle tune variations are a great source for developing your technical musicianship as a mandolinist. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Every Firefly/Serenity Fan Needs One!!!!!.......2007-01-10
This is a good adventure for Browncoats who RPG. Love the verse and love the game.
Great first addition to the Serenity RPG.......2006-09-26
This is a fantastic addition to the Serenity RPG. It is half adventure and half sourcebook. If you are a browncoat but not an RPG player, I still believe there is a lot you can get out of this work. One of the favorite recurring characters from Firefly is central to this adventure and it is great to see what sorts of complications she can work up in a different setting. I particularly enjoy the appendix on the authentic old-west card game Faro.
Serenity the RPG.......2006-09-21
I love this book the serenity RPG is the closest thing at this time to a new movie or series and is full of adventure. RPGs are not infantile as much as the other review says search After Serenity and The Signal in iTunes Podcasts and you will see that I am right
THIS IS NOT A BOOK.......2006-09-14
Amazon and the authors should appologize to everyone for their false advertising.
Prior to its release (now) the only information on this item was that it was a paperback book. The implication was that it was a story/novel set in the Firefly universe - it is not.
This 'book' is a rule book for some infantile role-playing game. As a fan of the Firefly/Serenity series, I pre-ordered this 'book' nearly one year ago, and checked the info page periodically to see if there was any new information. I was pleased when I learned it was shipped, and furious when it arrived.
Shame on you Amazon and shame on you Hickmans.
There's $25 I'll never see again

Book Description
The meteoric rise of "Killer Diller"
Barry Diller has been a major player in the entertainment industry for more than thirty years. Always on the cutting edge, he revolutionized television with such groundbreaking concepts as the movie-of-the-week and the miniseries. He greenlighted the megahits Raiders of the Lost Ark, 48 Hours, and Terms of Endearment. Now, industry insider George Mair takes you behind the scenes for a perceptive, penetrating, and completely captivating look at both the public persona and the private life of a legendary media mogul. Learn the truth about:
- The critical acclaim—and the controversy—behind The Simpsons and Married . . . With Children
- The abortive CBS-QVC merger: what went wrong and why
- Hardball and heartbreak on The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers
- Wheeling and dealing with Hollywood heavyhitters Rupert Murdoch, Sumner Redstone, Marvin Davis, Michael Eisner, and many, many more!
"He taught movie executives to put some passion into their jobs. The business is a better place because of Barry."—the late Dawn Steel studio head and onetime Barry Diller protégé at Paramount
"He really is the brightest of the bunch." —Julia Phillips Academy Award(r)-winning producer bestselling author of You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again
Customer Reviews:
Ok for a Business History.......2003-01-17
Ok, for a business history of mergers, deals, movies, cable channels and so forth. It does give some glimpse into Diller's Jewish background and childhood, as well as, the vulgar and occasionally violent way he assaults his employees. However, it barely mentions his co-leadership of the notorious Velvet Mafia. Biographers of David Geffen, the long-time "associate" of Diller, are more forthcoming. Stephen Singular in "The Rise and Rise of David Geffen" discusses the Velvet Mafia and its bisexual media mogul leaders including Diller and Geffen. Tom King's "The Operator" flatly states the gay preference of Barry Diller. George Mair's book is well worth reading as is his biography of Si Newhouse, "Newhouse."

Customer Reviews:
Didn't Live Up.......2007-07-03
I absolutely love "The James Bond Lifestyle Seminar," but this audiobook fell short. The plot was decent, but nothing better than you'd expect based on the synopsis. The main character is supposed to be 33 years old, yet his voice sounds like an old man. He sounds very unsure of himself. Also, a lot more could have been done with the sound effects. They did not immerse me in the scenes, as another reviewer claimed.
I never wanted it to end!! Fabulous!.......2007-01-16
Mr Kyriazi's production of Hard Rock Lovers was just fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat on a daily basis! I put the audio book on my iPod and listened while I jogged. I gotta say it motivated me to get out there and I am so sad it is over! I cannot wait for his next Audio production!
The story is fantastic, gripping and sexy. I absolutely loved it!
Bravo!!!!
An all-star cast of my generation! I swooned over Rod Taylor and Robert Culp!.......2006-05-22
Wow! My sister pointed me to this audio book and I couldn't believe my ears. I just relaxed on my bed to listen and was absolutely delighted with the movie-quality of the sound effects. Not only is this a masterful, well-written plot, it's also a quality production. The best I've heard.
And those stars that the magnificent author/director Paul Kyriazi lined up for this special version of his book!!! Well, all I can say is that I remember swooning each time I saw any of them on the big screen. (I hope my hubby doesn't read this.) But when I saw Rod Taylor--who narrates this story, with such a come-hither voice--starring in The Birds with that gorgeous Tippi Hedren, I almost fainted. Yes, he was that much of a hunk ... and still is, according to my sister!
Incidentally, people used to say I looked like Tippi. Ah-hhh, memories ... But getting back to this audio book, I loved it to pieces.
Keep up the excellent work, Mr. K. You're terrific, and almost as handsome as the great Rod! Ciao, baby ...
WONDERFUL cast, beautifully performed, an EXCITING thrilling journey you won't forget!.......2006-03-15
From the moment Hard Rock Lovers comes on ... it takes you by the hand and mind, and immediately draws you into this intriquing story, narrated by the imcomparable Rod Taylor, of revenge, love, lust, cold reality and spiritual enlightenment.
Robert Culp kept me laughing with his perfect low-life agent performance, always the best! James Darren was the perfect rock star, mean, talented but sad, his performance was # 1. Ishtar Uhvana was great as Medusa, she added the sweetness to keep some reality in the rock world and her ending dialoque brought tears to my eyes. Loved Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris was brilliant as the evil Reynaldo, and Nefta Perry as Connie played the perfect Rosie Perez.
The ending gives you hope and leaves you with happy feelings. You will want to play it again and again; it only gets better each time you listen.
Paul Kyriazi is my hero. I am his BIGGEST fan.
Thank you Paul for the fun and exciting adventure!
"Hard Rock Lovers".....Beautifully done!!.......2006-03-14
The "Hard Rock Lovers" audio book was not at all what I expected, but what a wonderful surprise! It's a twisted, tangled web of events played out by a handful of multi-leveled, intertwined characters. The story is well written, beautifully told and convincingly enacted centering on the heights of a successful rock star and the terrible costs that are paid when that success is abused. People and events are manipulated by all the characters to satisfy their own needs and agenda.
"Good" and "evil" are blurred. "Life" and "death" are blurred. Relationships are blurred, but the irony of fate is boldly presented and it's made abundantly clear that our "next" existence offers another chance to hopefully do better. The inevitability of change, the subtle and sometimes dramatic interrelationships between cause and effect as well as the ever-present, ever-looming scales of divine and poetic justice are persistent threads. A beautiful blending of drama and melodrama are used to develop both the story and the characters. The audio presentation is top-notch entertainment, particularly when you consider that all acting is accomplished solely through vocal artistry. The actors do a fantastic job of inviting the listener into their world and moving you effortlessly through the story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. It is wonderful from start to finish and my congratulations go out to all involved. It's a winner on all levels.

Book Description
Soap opera story, the only mass-public form of continuing narrative today, is oral culture for our electronic era. Carol Williams' "It's Time for My Story" is an examination of soap opera sources, structure, and response, particularly from the critical viewpoints of psychology, both archetypal and empirical, and popular culture, specifically narratology and feminism, that uncover the true nature of the genre. First, Williams traces the development of soap opera from its immediate source in radio and television as well as from its fundamental source in age-old myth and storytelling. Then she analyzes the content and form that together make up the structure of soap opera. Finally, she looks at what soaps mean to watchers and in the process debunks many myths about soap opera (for instance, the myth that soap opera, like all television drama, is merely commercial, produced formulaically by advertisers; Williams argues that soap opera is not only a commercial product but also a popular art form derived from the wellspring of culture and folk story). She also argues that it is a form which has been depreciated because it is historically a woman's medium. Discussions with writers, creators, and fans are included throughout. Recommended to scholars and students of media, drama, popular culture, and women's studies.

Wonderful Memories of the past.......2005-09-14
Thank You to the people who decided to recover all these great memories of the past. When I was a child we sat in front of the radio for hours and listened to these wonderful broadcasts!
WONDERFUL!
Radio Noir.......2005-08-18
This is a wonderful and excruciating collection.
If you've read the biographies of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, you know how much loathing they had for the work they did on these programs. Hammett took his timeless hard-boiled detective, Sam Spade, and made him a commercial smoothie for more than a few of the programs on these CDs. Chandler wrote a few, too.
Like their protagonists, these authors did it for the money, which they needed for liquor. What's tough about listening to these works is that the brilliance is still there, but in between terrible cliches, hackneyed and contrived plots, and, in a few cases, really bad radio acting.
But you cannot do without this collection if you have any serious interest in 20th Century American history and culture. If you only view this as a compelling argument against the commercialization of art, so be it.
But it's funny as heck to hear independent filmmakers today bemoaning the levelling effect of popular media. It was just the same way in 1945 as in 2005, and we're somehow still producing great art in so many venues.
Like Talking Heads used to say, "same as it ever was."
