Book Description
"Elegantly written and illustrated, brilliantly illuminating about the work . . . This is a book of which Jacques Tati would surely approve"--Margot Norman, Literary Review
A Frenchman of Russian origins, Jacques Tati, who was born in 1908, worked as a picture-framer and a music-hall mime before being drawn into the world of the French cinema and making the films that rank him with the most popular comedy actor/directors in any country. He brought to his films - Jour de Fête, Monsieur Hulot's Holidays, Mon Oncle, Playtime and others - a healthy openness to new technology in movie-making and a rigorous precision, the hallmark of many great clowns, in the execution of each scene. He made no feature films after Parade in 1974, and he died in 1982. In this, the first complete, authoritative biography of the French icon, David Bellos has had the complete collaboration of Tati's daughter, the freedom to examine hitherto inaccessible archives including film footage, videos, taped interviews and early drafts of shooting scripts. What emerges is the picture of a man at once dedicated, impassioned, and shy, more an artist than a man of business. In Bellos's dynamic, closely researched account, the man comes abundantly alive, and remains, as on screen, strangely loveable.
Customer Reviews:
The Man Behind The Raincoat.......2007-02-19
Jacques Tati is finally exposed for all to analyze. His singlemindedness, his need for total control... He was an auteur of the French cinema, in complete control of his films from script to production to direction, to starring. No studio edits, no rewrites, no director's cut. His was the only cut. This singlemindedness stands in complete contrast to his complete ignorance of comedy and film, an ignorance he maintained purposely all his life. He knew nothing of competitors like Chaplin, and insisted old gags in his films were original ideas of his own, to the point of being insulted at the suggestion he copied them. Now we know we can believe him. He kept reinventing the wheel, instead of leveraging off others' experience to take his own humor to new heights. The result was steady decline in the quality of his films, leading to bankruptcy and a pathetic ending to a lifetime of dedication to his craft, and the good fortune to be able to realize his goals. This is the story of the man behind the rumpled raincoat and the odd posture, and it is well worth understanding.
Jacques Tati: 20th Century artist.......2001-11-19
David Bellos and Jacques Tati: What an odd combination. The odd thing about it is that David Bellos is a much-respected translator of French writer Georges Perec's novels, in addition to being Perec's biographer, and he's a much-admired expert on French literature. So why would he be interested in writing a biography of one of cinema's great clowns, Jacques Tati, especially when Bellos admits he is not a film fanatic and feels that if he had met Tati, he wouldn't have been able to spend more than five minutes in conversation with the man? Bellos cites his interest in Tati's artistry and his place in what the author calls "the trente glorieuses -- the 30 glorious years of rising prosperity in France from 1945 to 1975." These are the years during which Tati did his amazing work. He was not only one of the great filmmakers but also an artist who commented on humankind's interest and need for work and leisure -- with hilarious results. And his set designs have been a hit with architects around the world.
There is nothing more moderne than a Tati film. Tati made fun of the French love for le gadget: everything from Le Corbusier-style chaises longues to cars that had grills suitable for barbecuing. Jacques Tati is weak as a biography, insofar as Bellos doesn't get into Tati's head, but the book is strong when Bellos writes about Tati's films and his Kubrick-like madness in waiting for the perfect shot, perfect moment, perfect anything. Like Kubrick, Tati was an unforgiving perfectionist, and although he was a funnyman on film, Tati was quite moody and depressed during the shoots. His single-minded intensity in getting the film he wanted eventually destroyed him financially; for the masterpiece Playtime, Tati built a small modern city as a set, which caused his accountant to flip his lid. The film failed financially, and Tati never recovered from the disappointment.
As Bellos writes in his introduction to the book, he is hopeful that there will be other books on this peculiar film genius. This is only an introduction, and when one takes it as just that, this book is a must-read for Tati fans. Oh, and if you are not a Tati fan, I don't want to know you.
a serious study of tati's career.......2001-03-07
don't expect to read the normal gossip-laden biography. this is a most serious text detailing the comic genius and cinematic philosophy of the brilliant and (almost) tragic actor/director.
The itinerary of a life.......2000-07-07
Bellos presents the itinerary of a life and something more of a career, but Jacques Tati remains largely a mystery. I'll reread this biography, ignoring the narrow, academic view of intellect and flawless, postwar judgments of wartime behavior, and I'll recommend it to others. But I'll continue to hope that someone will write a life of Tati filled with scenes as revealing and eloquent as Hulot's resetting of a brick in a crumbling Paris wall.

Book Description
Me and Bobby D. is the exciting coming-of-age story of two teenage boys from the Bronx - Steve Karmen and Walden Robert Cassotto - who meet in high school, play in the same band, and then form a singing act. The year is 1956, at the dawn of rock and roll, a crossroad in the entertainment business rarely written about. Cassotto changes his name to Bobby Darin, makes his first recording, and he and Karmen are booked on the road for their first job ever as entertainers into Club Temptation, a seedy nightclub in suburban Detroit. This is Bobby Darin before "Splish Splash," "Mack, The Knife," "Beyond the Sea" and "Dream Lover"; and Steve Karmen before composing "I Love New York," "This Bud's for You," "Hershey Is the Great American Chocolate Bar" and "Nationwide Is on Your Side." What happens to them during the two-week engagement will alter their friendship, and change both of their lives forever. B/W photos; Hardcover; May; Biography; World Rights Steve Karmen has been a composer/lyricist/arranger/producer of advertising music for over 30 years. In addition to the above-mentioned themes, some of his most memorable compositions are: "Here Comes the King (The Budweiser Clydesdale Theme)," "Hertz, We're America's Wheels," "Weekends Were Made for Michelob," "Sooner or Later, You'll Own Generals," "Quality Is Job One - Ford," "We Build Excitement - Pontiac" and "At the Nevele." He is the recipient of 16 CLIO Awards, the "Oscar" of the advertising industry; the author of Through the Jingle Jungle, the accepted textbook about the industry, published by Billboard Books; and The Jingle Man, a collection of 152 of his jingles, published by Hal Leonard Corporation. Karmen lives in Westchester, NY.

I'ts a Square Up.......2007-09-16
I can understand this memoir from the authors perspective. We all know Darin like everyone had his faults but his talent was unmeasureable. Steve had talent also but his forte was another area. Still an informative book on the very early years when Darin was trying to get off the bottom rung. I guess we would all be a little obnowious if we knew we only had a few years to make a mark, and what a mark it happened to be,
Me and Bobby D and a book deal makes three...........2006-02-11
This book was published during the highly anticipated (and just as highly-disappointed) bio-pic on Bobby Darin was being released. Undoubtly Steve Karmen was a good friend of Bobby Darin's and this story is intended to take the reader along on a fateful summer as the two head out to promote Bob's latest song (Rock Island Line) and find fame and fortune in a nightclub. Although the story may be true, Karmen seems to want to reflect more about his being delegated to the back of the band rather than put more into the real character of Darin. From what I have read, Karmen was there during the real formative years of Darin's career, but I felt like he was telling only part of the story here.
I like this book in spite of the sour grapes and credibility problems with timeline.......2006-01-06
I think this is one of the better bios of Bobby D (and Steve K, tho' I bought it for Bobby of course) in spite of some flaws. I liked that fact that, thanks to the level of detail and transcripts of conversations, Bobby Darin was a vivid presence in this book unlike in most bios of him. I also think it mostly rings true, since early BD was a very aggressive, confident, and determined individual who did not stumble into stardom but worked hard for it. Steve K is clearly jealous and bitter about Darin's success after leaving him behind, but he's also pretty honest about those emotions and acknowledging them earns him some credibility.
In addition, Steve K is honest enough to include passages where Darin and Darin's manager tell Steve K up front early on that he is *only* accompanying Darin to a Detroit night club engangement to help Darin with *his* act and *his* career and to reduce Darin's nervousness at his first engagement. So Steve was warned immediately that he was just along for Bobby's ride, at Bobby's personal expense in fact, and those were terms he readily agreed to up front. As a result he forfits a lot of the justification for his bitterness. He was not mislead or lied to unless he lied to himself. So he shouldn't have been horribly shocked when that's exactly how events unfolded, tho' I doubt that he expected to be so completely dismissed from Bobby's life. (And I think the reason for his total dismissal was jealousy on Darin's part because Karmen was more classically handsome and thereby a bit of a threat to upstage the more charismatic Darin.)
But mostly ringing true means that some rang false. Most significant is that Karmen's timeline sometimes doesn't jibe with reality, esp in the last chapter. For example he describes meeting with "Bob" Darin (Bobby's late life folk incarnation in which he spurned the show biz plastic tux and toupee in favor of denim and accustic guitars and protest songs) November of 1972 - a year before Darin's death.
Sorry but that's impossible. "Bob" Darin was retired by 1970 at the latest - a full two years earlier. And by the time Karmen claims to have reunited with "Bob" Darin at the Desert Inn, Darin was again in tux and toupee and doing middle of the road material mixed with his beloved folk and R&B material. It's very distracting when he's describing a scenario that couldn't have taken place when and as described.
Along the same lines, he claims that he basically never saw Darin from 1956 to 1973 (aside from attending Polly's funeral and a copa show), yet numerous accounts in other books, and his appearance in photos, have him in Darin's presence in the late 50's.
I also share the scepticism of those who doubt he could remember hundreds of pages of verbatim converstation decades later. It's just a bit of a red flag, but I think he probably remembers the gist of it. And the conversation is so instrumental in bringing the characters to life that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
He also takes a few cheap shots, implying that there was something pathetic about the later day Darin when in fact he was a superstar whose body, through no fault of his own, was simply wearing out and betraying him.
Regardless of these quibbles, this books provides one of the most vivid portrayals, along with Dream Lover, of Bobby Darin - who earned his superstar status in spite of bad health and in spite of sour grapes from Steve Karmen.
Get over it!!!The Better Man Won....................2005-07-27
As a long time fan of Bobby D I was interested in reading this "first person account" of the start of his journey into show business. What you come away with after reading this book is that Mr. Karmen, after almost 40 years, has not gotten over it. The bottom line is that Bobby had the talent with the driven and stubborness and yes the ability to make his career happen and that wasn't always the best outcome for those around. Mr. karmen, you finally lost you virginity and appear to have made a successful career and good life with your
children, so why still so bitter? Maybe because we will always remember Bobby and not you.
THE BEST show business biography !.......2003-07-09
This is THE BEST show business biography that I have EVER read !
Not withstanding that this is about Bobby Darin, this book gives the BEST account of how a Star is created...and yes, it isn't all just "Chance", it involves delicate construction, and LOTS of hard work.
For Bobby Darin fans, this is a treasure trove of information, that ONLY a Best Friend could share with us. The author's unvarnished account here is vividly written, so that the reader is "included", if you will, in this life-career, defining moment.
ATTENTION TO THOSE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE DETAILED CONVERSATIONS and RECOLLECTIONS: We all have experienced personal, life defining "moments", where we had to make choices, that we have had to live with, the rest of our lives. They will be forever, etched into our consciousness, like a jackhammer into granite.
To intimate, that the author could not state each word of a conversation, that was held decades ago, is a cheap shot and totally made without any foundation of fact or reality.
The book is awesome ! It may change your life, too !
Mr. Karmen's recollections are deeply, and personally felt. It's our privilege to relive them, with him.

A grouping of stars is called a "constellation." Constellations are our oldest picture books. People who studied the stars at night long ago connected them with imaginary lines. These lines made shapes that looked like animals and people. Famous constellations include "Leo the Lion" and the "Big Dipper." Have you ever seen a picture formed by some stars? What was it? Could you find it again?

Great family conversation tool.......2007-09-13
We were looking for a way to increase our family communication during dinner and to allow each child in the family to have equal "floor time" for their comments. The cards contain great topics, are creative, and enhance spontaneous discussion. Great buy!
kid talk.......2007-06-27
A little disappointing. Our family has to skim through a few cards before we find one that seems fun.
Fun for the whole family.......2007-03-21
I bought this so we would spend some quality time at the table and boy did it work.My husband works alot of hours and is so used to eating and jumping up from the table. These cards really go all of us talking and the kids have been eating more and not bouncing around at the table.Even my 2yr old likes to listen to our answers and has been much more behaved at dinner!
loved it.......2007-01-15
I have kids ranging from 4-9yrs. they love these and beg to do them at dinner time. the best $7 I've ever spent.

The Cazalets Enter the Modern World.......2003-10-23
I enjoyed these four novels about the Cazalet family. It was very interesting to be able to observe how England changed from the years before World War II to the period after it, going from a calm self-absorption and a reliance on live-in help to everyone listening to news bulletins and servants being almost impossible to get. Rather strange, though, I thought, that so many of the marriages were between young women and middle-aged men. And virtually everyone having an affair -- is this realism, or just overuse of a good technique for revealing character? And I thought Clary's choice of a husband implausible.
But in general the books were very believable. I was interested in all the characters and moved by their experiences. They have been absorbed into my mind just as if they were real people. Major virtues of these books are the atmosphere of English culture of the time, and the subtle character development. An unfortunate minor distraction in this book, unlike the three other volumes, were editing errors, for instance characters starting the paragraph with the wrong name, or Christopher's pet Oliver being a cat for ages and then suddenly on p. 478 being a dog!
A great send-off to a great series!.......2002-01-23
This was, I think, the most touching book of the Cazalet series. After the war their situations are not automatically better, but slowly things begin to improve for some of the Cazalets. Clary and Polly fall in love, Rupert and Zoe try to rediscover each other, and Louise makes peace with her past and takes control of her life.
For those in the United States who are having a hard time finding this book (as I did) I suggest you try W. H. Smith On-line. I ordered it from them and it took about a month to arrive from England (cost was about 10 pounds).
The Satisfying Conclusion to the Cazalet Saga.......2001-06-10
The fourth and final volume of "The Cazalet Chronicle" brings to a satisfying conclusion the story of this much-extended English family. Taking place in the aftermath of World War II, each family member grapples with the rationing, food and housing shortages, and other deprivations the English endured. Marriages break apart and new unions are formed, pregnancy shatters the life of one cousin while another eagerly anticipates motherhood, new careers are begun, family rifts pit brother against brother, and old loves are rekindled as the Cazalets head into the future. Elizabeth Jane Howard writes the intimate details of their lives with a warmth, humor, and passion that is almost magical.
Casting Off.......2000-08-29
I, too, have been left hanging and am eagerly awaiting this last book, as I know it too will receive a five star rating from me. I can recommend both the books and the tapes in this series to be among the best. Keep writing, Ms. Howard!
The Present Emerging.......2000-03-02
The Second World War has ended, but "normal" eludes most of England and, in particular, the Cazalet family and assorted family retainers, servants, etc. Communication between family members reaches a new low, families break apart and regroup, and faith appears as a real issue. Teddy acquires an American bride of the worst type, Louise sheds a famous husband, Villy becomes the odd one out, Polly does not seek but still finds, Angela travels to the U.S. to marry, Christopher becomes his own man, and Neville is utterly charming in his hideously truthful way. Crawling into the covers of this book gives the reader a real sense of the present emerging. The recorded version sounds magnificent, the dialogue is so skillful that I'd love to listen to the books too. And, having read all four books, must we end it here?

Fantastic Author.......2007-07-05
I loved this book and have read all the installments. This is the last Volume.- I wish she had written more about this family. If you enjoy stories about Britian during WWII, with a terrific cast of characters you won't be able to put this down. But start with the first Volume "The Light Years" and read them in order.
All of her books are really good.

Great Sourcebook.......2006-01-05
I spent an hour looking through knitting books at the local store, only to find most were sorely lacking in basic information. It's been years since I first learned to knit, so I needed a book that not only listed the common abbreviations but explained what they meant. This book does that, and more. Its plentiful diagrams and simple explanations are easy to follow, and includes a handy section on how to correct mistakes. The patterns allow you to try newly learned skills.
My only complaint-- and it's minor-- is that I wish the book were smaller and/or spiral bound so I could stick it in my knitting bag. But don't let that keep you from buying this great knitting reference!
a MUST for the novice knitter.......2005-10-03
This is a gorgeous book!!! Whether you are a beginner or knitter with only a few techniques under your belt, this book is a gem. The diagrams are clear and easy to follow. Basics on how to read yarn labels, definitions of various knitting terms, how to determine how much yarn you need and SO much more are included in this book. There are also several projects with level of difficulty shown. Such a keeper ~ I love this book!!!

Book Description
Now in her 70s, Claribel Alegria is universally recognized as the major living poet of El Salvador. Casting Off extends the themes Alegria explored in Sorrow: the loss of a loved one, solitude, and reflections on the past. As the title -implies, this collection is also a lyric farewell: "My footsteps are leading / toward quiet solitude / toward the star-silence / that has no more questions."
She is becoming increasingly well-known in the U.S. as a result of her many tours, readings, and residencies. She will return to the U.S. in the spring to promote Casting Off.
The English versions in this bilingual edition are by renowned translator Margaret Sayers Peden, who beautifully preserves the lyric quality of this major poet at the height of her career.
The Ache of Absence
Oh how my fingertips ache
When I hold out my hand
And don't find you.
Claribel Alegria, the child of a Nicaraguan father and a Salvadoran mother, was born in Esteli, Nicaragua, in 1924. Since she grew up in El Salvador, she considers herself Salvadoran and has received many national prizes from that country. Her works include 12 volumes of poetry, a number of novels and children's stories-many of which have been translated into English. Sorrow won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Poetry in 2000 and was a BookSense selection. Her work is featured in numerous anthologies, including Bill Moyers' The Language of Life.

Book Description
Nora, a character from Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll House, was a model for liberal-thinking Chinese women during the May Fourth Era of the 1920s and 1930s. Nora-like figures appeared often in modern Chinese literature to illustrate the issue of women's emancipation. Casting Off the Shackles of Family explores the reception and transformation of the Nora theme in the works of Lu Hsün, Mao Tun, Ting Ling, and other May Fourth writers. In particular, it uses female heroic journey theories to trace women's pursuit of independence and freedom in modern China.
