Book Description
Since its debut in 1994, Mike Mignola's Hellboy has been one of the most celebrated comics on the shelves. Mignola has won every major industry award for his work, and attracted the attention of Hollywood for a series of jobs on high-profile films, including Disney's Atlantis and Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. Now the director he teamed with on Blade II, Guillermo del Toro, brings Mignola's creation to the big screen, and Dark Horse provides a unique look into this moment in comics-to-film history.

Excellent "Art of..." movie book!.......2004-07-05
I was unfamiliar with the world of Hellboy prior to seeing the movie. When I did and when I ordered this book, I was blown away by the wealth of visual richness that inhabit the Hellboy universe. Being a collector of "Art of..." books, I realized that the strength of Hellboy lies in the visual galore. The book is fully detailed with drawings from every level of production as well as the closeness of working atmosphere between the filmakers and the creator of the original material not commonly known in Hollywood.
My only gripe in this book is that the structuring is kinda messed up and confusing, since the book mixes up the art section with the script.
Mignola and del Toro and Barlowe, oh my.......2004-05-16
Besides a complete shooting script and lots of commentary, this has tons of illustrations and concept art done by all the artists involved in the movie. It's wonderful to see Mike Mignola's and Wayne Barlowe's sketches following the development of all the various Hellboy monsters, characters and environments, and lots of stuff that didn't make it into the movie. A must for any fan of the film.
Great art, great book.......2004-03-16
A must have for art, comic and production design lovers, has lots new designs by Mignola Barlowe and other great artists including the prop makers. Includes beautiful pages illustrating both concept and the picture of the final prop supported by the commentaries and thinkings of the artist involved in the creation of that specific prop. It also includes the final shooting script, and images from Guillermo del Toro's notebook which are nice sketches and annotations depicting the first idea behind the final design of each character. Great!!! one of the best, just do not read it before watching the movie.

A guide to the playing style of the famous Gypsy guitarists, and information on many of the leading exponents of this unique style.
Customer Reviews:
Sketchy, but useful.......2003-07-25
There are a lot of great photos of the various great Jazz Manouche guitarists here, and there's also a fair amount of information. It's not particularly well organized, and there's no theory or explanation; what you get are a few basic licks, a library of chord shapes, and a few tunes rendered in tablature.
This is a good resource for the intermediate or advanced player familiar with the genre who just needs a leg up to get started, but it's not really quite basic enough for the beginner looking to emulate Django. Still, a motivated beginner with a good ear and a good library of Django Reinhardt recordings might find this to be just what he or she needs.
Great intro to learning Django's guitar style........1999-06-15
This book isn't very big but it did help me get a good idea about where I needed to go with my guitar playing. There are about 40 pictures of Django, family and friends playing Selmer, Gibson and Macafferri guitars and rough transcriptions two two or three songs and about 20 solo licks in tablature. There is also a few stories about Django and his life and one paragraph biographies of about 15 gypsy style players. This book made me realize how important triads are to playing this style of music! This book is a gem to read, I guarantee you will enjoy it.

Picture Puzzle Puzzling.......2007-08-09
This book is not for little kids-it is black and white no color at all, not what we expected at all. It is for children who like to color within the lines with thin markers and kids who are old enough to concentrate-likely 10 and over.
Great Entertainment.......2007-05-13
I bought this book for son. He was throughly pleased with it. He said it was the greatest!. The puzzles kept him entertained for hours with never any boredom.
dissapointed.......2005-07-25
im sure the book is fine for those of us who can read. My 5 and 6 year old children(and myself) prefer the hidden picture books that show the pictures that need to be found, not in words, but actual pictures.
thanks,
amy
Great Puzzle Book for Middle School Students.......2005-04-16
The puzzles in this book are wonderful to use after students have finished a test or other work. It keeps them quiet so that the other students can finish their work undisturbed. The puzzles are a little more challenging than the usual Highlights Hidden Picture puzzles, which makes them great for junior high age students. I highly recommend this book and hope that Joe Boddy creates more in the future.

No Answer Key?! How can a puzzle book have no answers!.......2007-04-22
I wrote the company but have yet to hear from them. There are things you are supposed to look for in the pictures that I am sure are not there, and there is no answer key included in the book for one to check.
Better than expected.......2007-01-24
I choose this because my kids love hidden pictures, and thought that they would enjoy it during a long car ride. Surprise! The love the book -- but more for the state fun-facts as the hidden pictures. Great choice.

Walter Wick's fun photos and Jean Marzollo's tricky riddles have returned in this I Spy "best of," a compilation of some of the duo's most entertaining "Where's Waldo?"-style visual scavenger hunts.
Kids and grownups should be amply entertained digging up hidden treasure from a dozen different two-page tableaus, like "Baking Cookies": "I spy a boot, five arrows, blue hair,/A deer, four flames, a little green bear;/Five white beards, two three-string guitars,/Six raisin eyes, and three treetop stars." Wick's detail-rich photographs span from the realistic--like The Rainbow Express (an excitingly in-progress train diorama) and Arts & Crafts (a craft table crowded with thumbtacks, pipe cleaners, and the like)--to the more surreal, like Inventor's Workshop, a confabulation of live electrodes and steaming test tubes.
Ultimate Challenger makes a fine introduction to the 20-plus-volume I Spy series (Treasure Hunt, School Days, and Marzollo gladly adds value here with two pages of brand-new additional riddles. (Ages 9 to 12) --Paul Hughes

Fantastic For Autistic Grandson.......2007-06-27
My 12 year old autistic grandson loves the I Spy series of books. The older he gets, the more challenges he likes. This is great. He knew what he wanted and told us we were the best grandparents for getting him the Ultimate Challenger. Thanks Amazon.

Ultimate I Spy.......2007-03-31
My son loves the entire I Spy series so it came as no real surprise that he was excited to get this book. I like the idea that the puzzles are challenging even to an adult and cannot be solved in mere seconds. They take a certain amount of concentration of the part of the child but not so much that puzzle becomes so difficult that they want to quit.
I Spy Ultimate Challenger.......2007-01-10
The book is both challenging and interesting to all ages. I also like the size of the book and that it's a hard cover.
Best I Spy book yet!.......2005-12-18
I like this I Spy book best of all. Not only does it have some of the best scenes from some of the previous I Spy books, but it also has some cool new riddles. Various scenes include "Rainbow Express" From I Spy Fantasy, "A is for..." From I Spy School Days, and "Baking Cookies" From I Spy Christmas. I read this whenever I feel like I need to pass the time because it is so much fun looking for things.
Overall, 5 Stars. If you can find this book, buy it. It is top-notch fun!
More (and Less) of the Same.......2004-09-17
While there's nothing particularly wrong with this book, there's nothing groundbreaking, either. The pictures are taken from other books in the series, and while the riddles are new, they aren't any more difficult or involved than usual. Think of this as "ultimate" in the sense of "last in a series" (until the next one comes out), not "highest in degree or order, utmost or extreme" (definitions via WordNet).
In addition to this book, I also have the Spooky Night, Christmas, and Mystery I Spy books. Of the 12 pictures in this collection five come from those books (two each from Spooky Night and Christmas, one from Mystery). Also with only 12 pictures, "Ultimate Challenger" has one fewer picture than the Christmas and Mystery books. And because the pictures come from a variety of sources, there isn't even a "find the common element" usually present at the end of an I Spy book.
To be sure the pictures are creatively staged and the riddles occasionally make good use of word play (trunk: is that elephant, tree or luggage?), and there are the usual bonus riddles at the end of the book. Make sure you have a very good light source over your shoulder or head because the finish on the pages and lighting of some of the pictures can make the objects even harder to find.
If you're new to I Spy or don't have any of the books recycled here (check the Amazon Search Table of Contents for a list of the pictures, the Back Cover has, I believe, a list of the books involved), the "Ultimate Challenger" isn't bad - and it's more disappointing than terrible if you do have some of the books already. Just don't expect anything too incredible (either in terms of quality or quantity), or you'll be let down.

Book Description
This is the story of George Heller—the glamour boy of the trade union movement—and his actor colleagues Philip Loeb, Sam Jaffe, and Albert (Van) Dekker. It is also the story of the formation and growth of AFRA (the American Federation of Radio Artists) and its later incarnation AFTRA (the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). Always prominent in Rita Morley Harvey’s account of what happened to the union, to its members, and to Heller and his friends are the shadows cast by the radical right in government and those willing to help in its dirty work.
The story of AFTRA begins during the Great Depression, a time of extraordinary trust and camaraderie as well as a time of tremendous hardship. But as American life stretched into the 1950s and the Golden Age of television, the radio and television industry was beset by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and all that he came to represent. While many would like to forget the McCarthy era, Harvey insists that this was a "time of stunning consequence in the lives of George Heller and his friends, in the lives of hundreds of others as well, all good, decent citizens, all once-busy, much-admired radio and television performers. Here was a time that bred such bitterness, such hatred—brother to brother, local to local—that it would take more than a generation to put it to rest."
Finding little published material on AFTRA, Harvey has based her biography on interviews with Heller’s friends and detractors, accounts in the press of the day, and old union records. "Surprisingly," she notes, "it was in that least likely place, the minutes of meetings darkened now with age, that the real story—the compelling, sometimes amusing and, often, tragic story—came to life."
This spirited biography of George Heller also serves as an accessible inside history of the Golden Age of radio and television through its glory days and its era of shame—McCarthyism and political blacklisting.

mitchny.......2001-10-19
I am a member of AFTRA and I think this book surprised the heck out of me. I thought it might be a dry tellling of the union's history. But no, Ms. Harvey really knows how to tell an engaging tale out of the story of this entertainment union. It really is a page turner, with passages about the Black-listing era that were exciting, depressing and had real echoes and lessons for today. I know Ms. Harvey had access to all of AFTRAs' minutes, and this book reflects the inside story...which is sometimes shocking in its facts. This book is excellent.
