"A superb resource that budding Flash designers should not be without. This [Flash MX Savvy] is one of the best Flash MX tutorials yet produced. 5/5 stars"
--3D World Magazine
Savvy: practical know-how
Flash MX is so powerful and versatile that even experienced web designers require additional help to move up to the next level. Focusing on program features as well as results, Flash MX Savvy anticipates your goals and uses professional examples to show you the best ways to attain them. You can either work your way through the book or zero in on any topic or group of tasks, from content creation to media integration to interactivity and ActionScript.
Hands On tutorials allow you to apply different techniques to projects that will yield useful, real-world results. Web designers, animators, artists, and developers will discover what's new in Flash MX, learn the whys, not just the hows, and find a helpful ActionScript reference.
Coverage includes:
Content Creation: painting and drawing, text manipulation, reusable content.
ActionScript: understanding ActionScript as a language, Movie Clip management and parameter control, plus a reference section with essential ActionScript terms.
Interactivity: interface elements and controllers, new Flash components.
Audio Integration: synchronization, compression schemes, scripting of audio interactivity.
Media Integration: with audio applications, with Director, with CD-ROM content, with 3D animation.

A decent book with room for improvement.......2005-08-13
I'm a fairly savvy computer user in most graphics and video applications, and I've had an interest in what Flash can offer for my projects. I've enjoyed using Dreamweaver for years, and figured I'd get myself a guide to help explore the world of Flash.
And while this book presents some good basics on using the features available in Flash, there are just too many BASIC chapters. Really, the book should start somewhere around chapter 10 or 11. If you have any knowledge of Freehand, Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign/Pagemaker, Quark or any other major graphics program, a good chunk of this book will bore you to tears.
However, the parts on animation are very clearly written, and the supporting files show you how things should work so you can judge your progress.
Personally, I'd prefer more emphasis on web design and less on pure animation, but I understand the bias, given Flash's primary intent. If you're looking for a Flash for the Web book, do consider either 1) a companion book or 2) a different source altogether.
Intermediate Users will like this book.......2005-04-26
Flash MX Savvy is NOT for beginners. It's not for advanced users either. It is a happy medium that is written for intermediate users of Macromedia Flash MX.
The presentation style is what most impresses me with this book. It is not a reference manual, nor is it one of those "Use our pre-made material in this step-by-step tutorial" sorts of books. It tells you the steps that need to be taken in a way that lets you apply what you read to your situation and not one they have dreamed up for you to mindlessly follow.
The progression of topics begins at the beginning. It talks about the various windows and panels, the tools for creating content, and then moves on to techniques in utilizing each tool in greater detail.
Actionscripting is implemented in very small portions that are followed with a description of what the code does and how to alter it.
The most interesting bits of information are towards the back of the book. Sections for integrating Audio and Video effectively are detailed very well. The capstone for me is the section on producing Flash content for an interactive CD. It was this that made me choose the Savvy book over any of the others on the shelf. It was unique, caught my interest, and is applicable to situations I will come into contact with in the future.
This book makes me sick.......2004-12-11
A 600+ pages tour of Flash MX buttons and menus... with just a couple ridiculously elementary "tutorials" thrown in. Makes me think of somone who had to write a flash book and has never done anything with it but figure out how the user interface works. You won't find anything useful in here, that is about CREATING something with Flash. As for me I am never gonna buy a book from this author again, and I am probably also ditching the whole "savvy" line as well.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2004-11-28
The actual rating is MINUS 5 stars. This book sucks. The stupid CD DOES NOT WORK on PC. Finally I copied it from my Mac. More surprises. Some chapters, IMPORTANT ONES, ARE MISSING. Without completing these chapters, you can't move on. I am throwing my book away in disgust. I'm heading out to buy a book that actually works.
People who can't even program their own CDs shoudn't write "How to" manuals.
Good book, good start.......2004-02-24
If you would like to learn flash then this is a good book to start. With all the different titles out there, I believe that this comes clostest to being 'savvy'. It covers a lot of important concepts that you would need to get started like simple drawing, amimation, sounds, and a good intro to action script (if you don't know much about scripting then this maybe a hard concept to understand, MX has a simple interface of click and drag, but on the 2004 verison, the option was taken out).
Like all complex program, flash is a 'bottoms up' program where you need to learn the simple concept first, then from it build up a more complex movie.
I brought this book with a Flash class I'm taking at my college of env design. It really helps when there is an instructor to help with the common questions. But, since I missed most of the class, I found this book to be very helpful. Nevertheless, I wish there were more 'hands on' chapters.

Some Great Stuff-However not what I hoped for.......2005-08-21
I learned some good stuff and the bonus chapters are good resources. However the teaching style is not a step by step proceedure. The author explains without demonstation then after 4 chapters of explaining, you do a hands on tutorial in which you do what you were supposed to learn. If you know Flash and are familiar with its processes this may be your book, if you want to see the steps in action, forget it. Over and over the author instructs you to create a file without letting you know what to create. Terms like "open a flash document and create an animation" appear far to often. The book is great for a reference but I thought there was to much explanation without demonstation. One further note, there were missing files on my CD, in trying to get the files downloaded i ran into a lot of hassle. Proof of purchase, broken links, and redirection to downloads that were not there. I believe a great teaching book on something like flash requires a support site that is equally great. I learned some neat things, and I use the book for reference, but for those first learning flash, buy the Macromedia Design Profesional series Flash.
Great Book, Great CD-ROM.......2005-02-22
I agree with many of the reviews already posted here. I found the CD-ROM to be especially thorough, with Bonus Chapters, Hands on examples, and lots of software demo and eval copies. In a working situation I had a question about curve editing, and I looked in the index of this book and found my answer explained step by step. A rival book did not have a "curve editing" entry in their index, and when I tracked down their explanation, it was not as clearly described or illustrated. Hats off to the Savvy guys, Watrall and Herber.
well done Watrall & Herber!.......2004-11-03
This is one of the best Flash study books I have ever used and I have bought many. I have to echo all the praise previous reviewers have written. I have tried to grasp ActionScript by diligently studying several tedious Flash books and never quite "got it" until I bought this one. This book is very well written and it intelligently guides you through Flash. I agree that it is written so that you can jump from topic to topic, but if you work though the chapters in a linear way, the book helps you build skills & knowledge of Flash from start to finish. Good for beginners or more experienced Flash users. The hands-on lessons after each chapter help you apply what you have learned and the inspiration design modules make it FUN! I LOVE this book and recommend it to anyone!
An excellent kick-start reference.......2004-10-06
Getting started with Flash MX 2004? Get this book!
As a new Flash user but an experienced programmer / Web developer, I had been looking for a good reference to get up and running quickly with Flash MX 2004 Pro. I started with one book that had tedious step-by-step examples and little background into why things are done a certain way. I then bought this book and on almost every page I found myself saying "Oh, THAT'S why!". I gave the other book away.
This book is very well written. It gets to the point quickly and doesn't linger too long on any one subject. The writing style is clear, easy to follow. and even fun to read. The exmaples are practical in that the authors don't assume that you need to see every mouse click and keypress listed as a "step". Each chapter ends with an online site that exemplifies the subject of that chapter - good for inspiration.
This is not an expert book and only covers ActionScript in passing (fine for most beginners). The CD-ROM includes bonus chapters (useful) and "essential" ActionScript examples and references. Since it is not a complete ActionScript reference it's unlikely to make my collection of essential CD-ROMs, however.
If you are getting started with Flash MX 2004 / Pro I highly recommend buying this book first.

COMPLEX AND FULFILLING
This is the second book I've read by Ethan Watrall, and I have to say I continue to be impressed. Flash MX 2004 (the most unfortunate product name, ever) is a complex, mature program. As the authors state, Flash MX 2004 can be "used to create amazingly complex, interactive products, dynamic and data driven websites and online applications, cartoon serials, online (and offline) games, music videos, music players, instant messengers...the list goes on and on." This book, Flash MX 2004 Savvy, then, takes the reader through the basics of using Flash MX and MX Professional, the new interface, visual techniques for drawing and animation, symbols and text, and runs right on through to more advanced topics, like ActionScript, Audio, Video, and integration with other programs.
MAC-CENTRIC
Now, Ethan Watrall isn't the only author. His co-author, Norbert Herber, is the "mac guy" for the book. Both authors are faculty members at Indiana University. Their writing style is both easy to understand and thorough. As a Mac user, I appreciated the cross platform approach of the text, with key-commands spelled out for both Windows and Macintosh users, along with a variety of Mac screen shots throughout the book.
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY
Each section of the book (2 - 3 Chapters) ends with a "Hands On" section, where the authors walk the reader through a project that includes the techniques discussed within the content portion of the chapters. (...) Based on scenes and reused graphic symbols, it looks fairly accomplished, I think. The book is full of these kinds of projects, which really helped me feel like I was learning something. Many times, books that are references on a given software application don't impart this same feeling of "getting somewhere."
NOVICE LEVEL
This book is a beginner to novice level guide to Flash MX 2004. It doesn't cover form-based applications, publishing in multiple languages, data binding and web services, nor ActionScript 2.0. As you can see, these are very advanced topics. So, basically,. this book covers anything you really need to know about starting out and actually using Flash. The authors don't spend a lot of time on how to open and save files, or how to manage your computer directory structure. The book progresses fairly swiftly through the first 3 chapters on interface and usage of the basic drawing tools, a topic that I feel gets too much space in many "beginner" books.
MORE THAN JUST A BOOK
An added value to the book is, of course, the CD full of files for use in the Hands On sections, as well as demos of Flash MX 2004 and other Macromedia products. In addition, it has several Bonus chapters, to take your learning further. What surprised me, however, was that the authors ALSO include a web site to go to that enhances learning as well. (...). Finally, the authors provide their personal email addresses, which I find refreshing.
BUY THIS BOOK
I look forward to finishing this book. It's not one I'm going to leave on the shelf for reference; rather, I plan on delving into each content and Hands On section in my own learning of this powerful multimedia tool. I'd recommend this book for anyone starting out their journey towards Flash mastery. It's well written, easy to understand, yet thorough and full of information. It has evenly distributed Macintosh savvy advice, as well as screenshots that look familiar to those that use computers "for the rest of us." Buy this book now!

Book Description
A retrospective celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Dungeons & Dragons© brand.
Thirty years ago, the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game made its debut on game shelves and kitchen tables everywhere. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon encompassing roleplaying, miniatures, novels, computer and video games, movies, and music, and it has influenced the world of fantasy in ways few other brands have. This new collector's book celebrates that rich history by taking a look at the past, present, and future of the D&D© brand.
The book will be filled with essays and photographs of the events, products, personalities, and art that have graced the world of Dungeons & Dragons over the years. Rich in vivid detail, each page will help tell the story of the evolution of the D&D experience and its place in our culture. Even celebrities will be part of the action, whether by sharing their fond memories of sitting around the gaming table or relating how the D&D experience has shaped their lives and their careers.
Customer Reviews:
Lame.......2006-08-19
I was excited about this book, then i read it at the bookstore. Trust me, you don't want this. It really looks like it was thrown together with no real reverence for the game, the art, the authors, Gygax, etc.
Kick start your nostalgia.......2005-09-29
As a once avid, now lapsed gamer, I picked up 30 Years of Adventure with great excitement. Scanning its pages, seeing the covers from the oldest Dungeons & Dragons books, I was instantly reminded of my priceless first days of gaming.
The book has two interwoven sections: autobiographical sketches by either people from inside the RPG industry or else in the entertainment industry about their first exposure to the game, and segments about the history of Dungeons and Dragons and its supplements. The history is like the DnD Special Edition DVD...fascinating background for anyone who has only ever seen TSR's finished products, but wants to know more about the process. The self-sketches are for the most part well-written walks down nostalgia lane. I found it extraordinarily inspiring to read about how DnD was such an important early creative experience for so many professional artists.
While on the one hand I would have preferred a bit more substance (graphics cover much more of each page than text), I cannot deny the beauty of the layout, or that its highly graphic appeal are part of why I bought the book in the first place.
Reading 30 Years of Adventure reminded me of a time when I wasn't afraid of humiliating myself by creating something less than a masterpiece. It reminded me of the many years of looking forward to Gen Con, the mecca for all true dorks, where we would gather to meet little gods; men and women who had written the books that helped us create universes.
Alright, enough sappiness. Time to find my dice.
Good book for the true D&D fanboy/fangirl albeit a little commercial.......2005-08-19
This book is not necessarily a chronological history of D&D. Seems more like a digest of the different D&D worlds with the early history and recent Wizards of the Coast acquisition tacked on the beginning and end respectively. The bulk of the book summarizes the different worlds of D&D Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, and Dragonlance. They even have the not so popular worlds like Spelljammer, Mystara (never heard of it before), and the horrific 2nd Edition. All this is good with nice, big illustrations and good testimony from the creators themselves, however, because i have an idea of the true history of D&D it seemed a bit too commercialized almost like plugging their products. I really wanted the "true" history of the D&D franchise including the power struggles within and the controversy created by the public. they touch up a little bit on it but not everything. Then again what do you expect from a book published by Wizards. Regardless, it's a good book for the D&D fan. Good presentation and great illustrations. I recommend it regardless but just know what to expect.
What did you expect.......2005-08-11
I read a lot of negative reviews of the book before I purchased it and I was almost scared off.
The book was exactly what is was supposed to be: a trip down memory lane for a long time player of dnd.
Coffee table books, such as this one, are not meant for a rabid cover to cover reading.
I loved seeing the pictures of/from old adventures, the history of dnd, and seeing famous people who play(ed).
Admittingly, it was a bit costly, but I defrayed that cost by buying from Amazon, so I still think it was worth the money.
Glad I Have It, but...........2005-02-22
I could barely wait to get my hands on this book. From the first announcement I read about it, the anticipation was brewing. With a release date so close to Christmas, wifely mandate required that I put it on my Wish List rather than purchase it immediately. So I was giddy when I did get it for Christmas. After finishing reading through the whole thing, I am glad that I got it and it was an enjoyable book. The celebrity profiles were nice, the retrospectives of insiders were interesting and overall it left a warm feeling about a much enjoyed hobby. However, there were a few things lacking which could have made the book perfect. For one thing, a little more diversity in the celebrity profiles would have been nice--they were a little over weighted to video game developers. What no one could get in touch with Kurt Schilling? Also, the way two different articles inside would share halves of the page would have been ok, except that all too often the two would not have the same break points so a reader was forced to either flip back and forth as you went or try to follow two different themes from page to page--with one sometimes ending mid sentence before you turned. Editing in general could have been a little tighter as occasionally (enough to be noticeable) you need to read a section over to fit together what was being said. Finally, it ends a little too abruptly--"then there was 3.5 Edition, the end.". One last chapter to tie the whole thing up in a bow would have been nice. With 30 years to put this together, maybe 1 more month to polsh it would have been nice.
I am certainly glad I have this book. There is so much to enjoy, so much nostalgia to experience, so many nice pieces of the puzzle made clear for a long time fan about the inner workings of the game. It will have a special place on the shelf where I will look fondly upon it, but with just a small twinge for what could have been.
