3 out of 5 stars Text is good. The publisher is sloppy!.......2004-12-13

I used this text for my Introduction to Film and Film Studies course. It was usually an easy to read and understand text. The main problem that I have with the text itself is the examples used. I highly doubt that introductory students have seen a lot of the films used such as Ozu's "Tokyo Story" and Resnais's "Last Year at Marienbad". The authors might want to consider using examples from films that are a little more widely viewed than Eisenstein's films.

If you're a prof and considering this book, please make sure that what you call a tracking shot actually matches what the textbook says. If you don't, it can create endless confusion.

Also, the publisher of this book really need to go into the text and fix some problems. More than once I was told that an example was on page 000 and there's a section in the mise-en-scene chapter that says that information has been removed and should be put back in. This can be confusing and also makes the book look sloppy.

5 out of 5 stars From a film professor.......2004-08-24

Since an earlier review was from a film professor who trashed this book, I thought it would be a good idea if another film professor stepped forward to defend it. The complaints from the aforementioned film professor are vague -- Film Art is apparently "pretentious" and "full of itself." If my college professors advanced criticisms that were as vague as that, and provided absolutely NO evidence or further explanations of their opinions, I wouldn't have continued my studies. It's pretty sad when a beginning undergraduate film student offers a much more articulate and thorough review of a text than a professor.

In any case, Film Art is an excellent introduction to the study of film, largley because it is NOT pretentious or full of itself. Unlike many theoretical accounts of film, Film Art is set forth in extremely clear language, is painstakingly organized for maximum clarity, is filled with visual examples and evidence from a staggeringly wide variety of films (Hollywood, foreign, documentary, avant-garde, old, new, etc.), and is thoroughly informed by both a mastery of film aesthetics and history, but also a practical knowledge of film production. Though it is not about film production and was not written by fillmmakers, its authors are totally familiar with the practices of film production and, unlike so many film scholars who leave production details to the techies, employ this body of practical knowledge to clarify how films work.

An excellent resource for teachers and students alike!

5 out of 5 stars I DO recommend this book.......2004-08-15

The previous review of this book was by a film professor. This one is by a film STUDENT. This book was required reading for my first film class which was an introduction to film class called: the Language of Film. This book is definitely a great introduction to the art of film. It is not a book about filmmaking. It is a book that introduces with each chapter a new angle from which film can be studied. Everything about film is covered: Film history; genre films; narrative form; the stages of film production, distribution, and exhibition; mise-en-scene; editing and sound in cinema; film criticism; and the future of film. Each section is accompanied by examples and screen captures from popular classic and modern films, and scattered quotations from popular and obscure filmmakers.

The title of this book is a perfect description of what the book is. If you are a beginner, it is perfect for an overview or outline of what film is. If you are an advanced film student, it is great for sharpening your knowledge of film.

With regard to the previous review by the film professor who was afraid that this book would put off his/her students, it would be better for students to know early on what they are getting themselves into. If you are actually turned off after reading this book, you shouldn't go any further with your film studies.

In conclusion, this is a great book that introduces the purely cinematic aspects of film that distinguishes it from every other art form. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars I do not recommend this book.......2004-07-20

Run, do not walk, away from this book unless you are an advanced film student. If you simply want to learn about film, this book is way too full of itself, in the terms and the verbiage it uses. It's fine for people who know they are going to "study film" for a career, but many students (*most* of *my* students) take a basic film appreciation class as a general education, one time, film class to simply learn "how to talk to other people about film," and to meet their graduation requirements. For that purpose, this book comes off as pretentious, and not at all geared toward a world *outside of* serious film study.

I sometimes think there are professors who choose books like this because they get so involved in being *scholarly* that they've forgotten what it's like to be a student. Or, they can't put themselves in the place of any student other than those whose *life goal* it is to "study" film.

This book is fine for students who have their eye on a career in film, but it's not a good book for beginning students who just want to learn a bit about film to better themselves, and to make themselves more well-rounded. There are other books that cover all the same topics, but do it in a much more straight-forward, real-world manner. "The Art of Watching Films" by Boggs, and "Understanding Movies" by Giannetti come to mind. (I favor Boggs.)

    Book Description

Jazz: Research and Pedagogy is the third edition of an annotated bibliography to books, recordings, videos, and websites in the field of jazz. Since the publication of the 2nd edition in 1995, the quantity and quality of books on jazz research, performance, and teaching materials have increased. Although the 1995 book was the most comprehensive annotated jazz bibliography published to that date, several books on research, performance, and teaching materials were omitted. In addition, given the proliferation of new books in all jazz areas since 1995, the need for a new, comprehensive, and annotated reference book on jazz is apparent. Multiply indexed, this book will serve as an excellent tool for librarians, researchers, and scholars in sorting through the massive amount of new material that has appeared in the field over the last decade.

5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from Neil McDonald.......2007-02-17

There aren't that many books on the QGD -- Marovic and Polugayevsky are the only authors that come to mind off the top of my head, and they're both somewhat dated. So there's definitely a niche for a book on the subject. The book under review is a godsend for a 1.d4 player like myself who wants a clear explanation of ideas. For instance, in the classical set-up (...c6, ...Nbd7, ...Be7), what does one aim for in the tabiya position that arises after 12....e5?

The book, as the author makes clear, doesn't cover every main line: it restricts itself to the Tartakower, the Lasker, the Exchange, the Classical, the Cambridge Springs, and the Bf4 lines. The author explains the ideas in each of these lines using games from both past and present. Every class player who plays or encounters the QGD will benefit from this, and even experts may pick up a few things.

In my humble opinion, mastery of QGD and QGA postions is essential for every chessplayer, regardless of whether he plays them or not.To this extent, the book belongs on every player's shelf.

    Book Description

In this book Grandmaster Sadler explains the ideas behind the Queen's Gambit Declined, one of Black's most dependable replies to the queen's pawn. He discusses all of the major variations in popular practice, explaining the key plans and ideas and highlighting important recent developments. Written by Grandmaster Matthew Sadler, one of the world's top young players, this book offers a full explanation of both the latest theory and important thematic ideas and covers the ever-popular Queen's Gambit Declined.

5 out of 5 stars Best opening book I've seen!.......2006-07-26

I recently purchased Sadler's QGD book because Silman had recommended this line as a solid, easy to learn response to d4 and I wanted a deeper understanding than what Silman provided in his short article(available on his web site). My initial reaction to Sadler's book is simple, "Why don't chess publishers REQUIRE all opening books be written like this?" QGD uses the typical complete game method found in most opening books. What sets it apart is the Socratic method Q and A that explains just about everything about the lines discussed. I believe that far too many opening books expect you to know a lot about the line before you begin the book, this book does not make that fatal error. In short, this book can TEACH you the lines it covers. My understanding is growing daily. Hats off to Mr. Sadler. Now let's urge publishers to follow his format with all their opening books.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the 1 d4 player (and his opponent!).......2005-09-17

This book deals mainly with 4...Be7 systems, with chapters on the Lasker, Orthodox systems, Tartakover, Exchange, Bxf6 systems, and the 5.Bf4 variation. All 110 games in these chapters are complete. The notes are relevant and a joy to read, with complete sentences to explain the moves or alternate moves in question, unlike those in pretentious books that try to be exhaustive by giving too many irrelevant variations, and are just tedious and boring. The last chapter, "Queen's Gambit Declined: `General Knowledge'", is four pages long and has two classical traps and a paragraph for each of four alternatives to 4...Be7: Bb4, Nbd7, c5, and dxc4. If you want a QGD book that delves deeper into some of these variations in addition to 4...Be7, check out Bogdan Lalic's "Queen's Gambit Declined: Bg5 Systems", also from Everyman and runner-up for the British Chess Federation's Book of the Year award, the award "Queen's Gambit Declined" got in 2000. If you want a book on the Tarrasch, look at Jacob Aagaard's "Meeting 1 d4".

But missing those lines is not a problem, because the author aims to give the reader a general understanding of the opening, not a complete repertoire. To this end, Sadler uses several examples from other queen pawn openings (like Semi-Slav, QGA, Nimzo-Indian) which are not digressions, but very relevant because after all, "(t)he QGD is the original queen's pawn opening; modern systems such as the Slav and Semi-Slav or the QGA have developed by taking features from the QGD and accelerating them..." (Sadler).

Sadler uses a wonderful Q&A format to explain the ideas of the QGD. These questions and answers give the reader a more solid understanding of the opening based on general strategy, which is something missing in most chess books.

"QGD" gives advice to both sides on how to transpose into the QGD. For example, 3 Nf3 avoids the Nimzo-Indian, 1 c4 avoids the QGA, and then 1...e6! can transpose into the QGD. This flexibility makes knowing the line good for both Black and White players.

Don't let the fact that Sadler deals mainly with 4...Be7 discourage you from buying this book. You will find after reading it that 4...Be7 can be much more solid than the alternatives, and that your game against other queen pawn openings will improve.

4 out of 5 stars Advanced book; in-depth analysis; many digressions; lacks some lines.......2005-07-03

First please note: I'm not an advanced player. My online rating is around 1400. I'm not in the USCF. I rarely study with a board. I just like chess and want to get a little better, without allowing it to become an obsession. It is not my life, so I won't ever become great at it.
My parents taught me chess when I was little and they taught me QGD. I have always known it a bit, and continually try to learn more about it and QGA.
    Now to the review:
I bought this book about three years ago and now rarely refer to it. I have since gathered other instructive texts that are more appropriate to my level, and which I find easier to read.

I want to like this book, but find that it is not for someone like myself who merely wants to read about openings and look for the dumb moves to avoid. You really have to study this book. You should set up a board or even two or three.

The author continually starts reviewing/examining a game, then spends a lot of time on what happened in another game, or what might happen [on a long side-line] if a player did a specific move. This is great for those of you at that high rating level.

As someone who rarely uses a board with a book and who reads the book, I found the diagrams not so useful in this book, because so amny of them relate to the side-line, not the game that is actually being analyzed. I got confuded sometimes; I couldn't match a diagram with the game that was being discussed in nearby text.

Others have pointed out how not all lines are covered, and a few other things. I just wanted to point out that this book is not an intro to QGD, but is a more advanced book.
It's not for everyone, but for some of you it may be the thing to get you even higher on the food chain, I mean ratings chart. :-)
It's not the right book for me; it could be for you. be sure to consider your rating and study habits before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars QGD with Be7.......2003-12-18

Hi, Sadlers book revolves around systems that play Be7. You should know this before purchasing the book. That said, it is top notch work again by Sadler. The question and answer format is a pearl unto itself, found only in Sadler's books. The format is intelligent. To play an opening correctly you "should" know the mainline as well as any possible traps. Sadler scores well here, detailing both. His personal comments at the end of each chapter reflect his likes & dislikes of the presented mainline. All in all, if your wanting to know the Be7 systems inside and out, I can fully recomend this book. On the downside, like all books from Everyman press, they are without algebraic notation. In my mind this hinders any chess book from becoming more that it is. Multiple systems are given in each chapter, concerning your opponets move orders. Sadler does make it clear that move orders are very important, stating that you must know them. examples are given for each and evey case.

5 out of 5 stars Both Slav and Queen's Gambit Declined books - great!.......2003-10-12

I have read many chess opening books. These are easily 2 of the best opening books I have ever read. The author selects a few relevant games and explains them in some detail. They have a question and answer style that gives much information in a few pages. He doesn't try to analyse every sub variation. They are well organized, and well written. I have had the books for a few months, and still go back to refresh my memory. They are permanent additions in my chess library.

I recommend them highly to anyone from beginner to expert level.
(My current USCF level is A - 1990)

I would also buy any book GM Sadler writes on openings.

        Book Description

The Bg5 lines of the Queen's Gambit Declined include some of the most popular and important opening systems at all levels of play. Here, for the first time in many years, a strong and experienced grandmaster covers all lines of this opening in objective fashion. Lalic fully acquaints readers with the main lines, and prepares them to face unusual systems and rare gambit ideas with confidence. Among the lines covered are the Exchange Variation, Tartakower Defense, Lasker Defense, Cambridge Springs and the Classical Orthodox Defense, all of which have been used at World Championship level. This book contains comprehensive coverage of an important opening system written by a top-class grandmaster with strategic guidance for both White and Black.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars I doubt the reviewer from Oakland's evaluation.......2002-06-24

I doubt the other reviewer's evaluation

I have not read this book but I'm a hardcore 1.d4 practitioner that faces the QGD everyday. I was compelled to write a commentary because the other reviewer complained about there being three annotated games with the "ridiculous 8.Rb1." There is nothing ridiculous about this move that I play very often for the purpose of beginning the minority attack, an important plan that is a major component of the white side of the QGD. The book may give the impression that some of the lines are drawish and this makes sense since it is a very old opening and has been played at the championship level since the beginning.

The book got rated 7.5 out of 10 by Randy Bauer, a respected chess book aficionado whose reviews can be found at chessopolis.com (under "Randy's Revealing Reviews)." He says that the book would be more helpful to someone who is already an experienced practitioner of most of the lines - "The breakdown on key plans for both sides is mostly limited to quick listing of lines, and many players just learning a variation need more." Perhaps that's why the reader from Oakland disliked it. I should add that Bauer gave Mathew Sadler's book on the QGD an 8, and this is a book that won a chess book of the year award. So to get a 7.5 from Randy is definitely an achievement!

I myself rated this book with 4 stars based on Randy's system since I myself did not read the book. I would have avoided the rating system, but the site would not allow me to post without including it.

If the QGD is a new opening for you, I suggest Gambit's "The Road to Chess Improvement," by Alex Yermolinski. In just one chapter, he thoroughly explains in plain English the four major plans (including the minority attack) for white in the exchange variation (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Be7 4.cxd5 exd5 - there are of course many other transpositions). The book in general is a great read for any d4 player. It also was the runner-up for the chess book of the year award that was given to Mathew Sadler's book.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2001-06-15

I have been very disappointed by this book, perhaps because it promised much more than it delivered. First, despite the editorial comment, it does not even attempt completeness. Entire important systems, the classical Orthodox as played by Capablanca and Alekhine among them, are mentioned only in short annotations or passed over with the justification that they are "out of fashion" - as if I was buying this summer's swimsuit catalog! This becomes almost absurd when one finds that on the other side, there are 3(!) complete annotated games with the ridiculous 8.Rb1??! against the Tartakower. And, again contrary to the editorial claim of objectivity, a bias for Black is perceptible, not so much in the evaluation of positions as in the choice of games. I didn't make precise statistics, but Black must have scored well over 50% in the games in the book. One gets the impression that the QGD is a particularly sharp and fighting defence :-/

In the unusual Queen's Gambit, grandmaster Chris Ward covers three offbeat but nevertheless important defenses to this ancient opening. The Chigorin Defense (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6) creates dynamic imbalance in the position. White often ends up with a big center but Black's active pieces can create havoc. The Albin Counter Gambit (1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5) is a tricky tactical line that can be deadly against an unprepared White player. The final variation (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Bf5) is an interesting way to try to solve immediately the age old problem of how to develop the queen's bishop in the Queen's Gambit Declined. 5 out of 5 stars A good overview of the Albin, Baltic, and Chigorin defences.......2005-08-10

If you open a chess game with 1 d4 and answer 1...d5 with 2 c4 then you need to be prepared for three "unusual" Black replies, namely 2...e5 (the Albin), 2...Bf5 (the Baltic), and 2...Nc6 (the Chigorin). Perhaps you'll even want to try one of these defences yourself. This well written book can help you do both.

          The Chigorin is the soundest of these three choices. White can try 3 cxd5, 3 Nc3, or 3 Nf3. I think the line that gives Black the most trouble is 3 cxd5 Qxd5 4 e3 e5 5 Nc3 Bb4 6 Bd2 Bxc3 7 Bxc3 exd4 8 Ne2 Nf6 9 Nxd4 0-0 10 Nb5 Qg5 11 Nxc7. This book tells about it and gives some suggestions. But, sure, I'd rather have White here.

The Baltic isn't a good choice for Black. 3 cxd5 Bxb1 4 Qa4+ c6 5 Rxb1 is good for White. And even 3 cxd5 Bxb1 4 Rxb1 favors White. Black has to hope for 3 Qb3 e5 or 3 Nc3 e6, which, as this book shows, are not nearly as good choices for White.

Still, there is a line in the Baltic that is worth knowing if one plays the Slav, namely 3 Nf3. The reason is that White may try 1 d4 d5 2 Nf3. Now what? What happened to that Slav you were going to play? And is this your chance to get that Queen Bishop outside your pawn chain?

Yes. It is. You can play 2...Bf5 and if 3 c4 e6 4 Nc3 c6, with a favorable version of a Slav. Ward gives a couple of games to show how this can go, but one can see more in books on the Slav.

In the Albin, my suggestion for White, which the book does not entirely agree with, is 3 dxe5 d4 4 Nf3 Nc6 5 Nbd2 (the book recommends 5 g3) Bg4 6 a3. Here, Ward recommends 6...Nge7 for Black, but I still prefer White and so does he.

          The Albin seems to me to be a bunch of traps. The most ridiculous is the following suicidal play by White: 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 d4 4 e3? Bb4+ 5 Bd2 dxe3 6 Bxb4 exf2+ 7 Ke2 fxg1=N 8 Rxg1 Bg4+ 9 White resigns. But the author shows us some quick wins for Black in saner lines. One is 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 d4 4 e4 Nc6 5 f4 f6 6 exf6 Nxf6 7 Bd3 Bb4+ 8 Bd2 Ng4 9 Nf3 Ne3 10 Qe2 0-0 11 g3 Bg4 12 a3 Ne5 13 Bxb4 Nxf3+ 14 Kf2 Rxf4 15 gxf4 Qh4 mate.

          You may protest that White ought to play an early a3 to avoid all this. But Ward also shows us the following: 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 d4 4 Nf3 Nc6 5 a3 f6 6 exf6 Nxf6 7 g3 Bg4 8 Nbd2 a5 9 b3 Bc5 10 Bb2 0-0 11 Bg2 Qd7 12 0-0 Rae8 13 Re1 Bh3 14 b4 axb4 15 Nb3 b6 16 Nxc5 bxc5 17 axb4 Nxb4 18 Ra5 Bxg2 19 Kxg2 20 Ba3 Qh3+! (winning for Black).

          Even in Ward's recommended line for White, namely 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5 3 dxe5 d4 4 Nf3 Nc6 5 g3, we see a couple of games where Black wins fast by pushing her h-pawn and getting her Queen Bishop to h3 (generally via e6 or f5).

I wouldn't want to play the Albin with Black, in spite of all these possibilities, but some of you might want to try it, or the Baltic or the Chigorin, for Black. And I do recommend this book to learn all these openings for White.

5 out of 5 stars Not too much, but highly enough........2002-06-21

Being a 1-d4 player, I have to be acquainted with unusual replies by Black. This book gave me enough theory and explanations to feel more confidence if confronted by these monsters! The frame of Everyman's Chess Publications (Cadogan) is efficient. A limited amount of selected games by the best players possible with a lot of explanations.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "must have" if you like QAF!.......2001-11-30

The British series of QAF is available for purchase on VHS or
DVD. It is worth every hard-earned dollar ([and it] includes the "Making of QAF". If you are financially-
challenged at the moment, then at least purchase this book.
Do keep one thing in mind: the book is not the *exact* script
for the British TV series; actually, that makes it more
interesting because it contains all of the lines that were
removed for one reason or another. As an aside, do a Yahoo
search for the American series on VHS: it is available in a
wonderful, high-quality pirated version that has not been
cut because of time and censorship reasons. I'm much more
partial to the British version; and these scripts make it
                even more rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for the American Ear.......2001-06-30

The original, U.K. version of "Queer as Folk" broke through many barriers. When I first watched the DVDs for Series 1, Parts 1-4, I had difficulty understanding the Manchester accent and some of the vocabulary. I kept replaying Vince's introductory speech until I could figure it out. The accents got easier with practice, although some characters, especially Donna, Nathan's friendly classmate, were still hard to understand. One gets the gist of it on the first pass-through, but it took more for my American ear to catch all the words. When I got the Series 2 DVD, the same issue arose. So, I checked Amazon to see if there were a QAF script available. There was; so I ordered it.

The good points: The script contains detailed staging and motivation directions. I can understand some conversations better now than before. The script contains Davies's original thoughts. There are some good color photographs inside (although none of them is risque).

The not so good points: The DVD uses a script somewhat different from what appears in the book. For example, Vince's prologue is not in the book. It would have been nice to have had additional, bracketed material to help the viewer parse out what was said on screen if it was not in the original script. The book is only for Series 1; I had been hoping for Series 1 and 2, combined. Finally, the quality of the paper in the book seems low.

Since the series has widespread popular support and since the accent issue is what kept the series off the air in the U.S., I am a bit surprised scripts were not distributed more generally in the U.S. to help potential enthusiasts feel more comfortable in knowing what was happening. Overall the book supplies extra clarity and insight into QAF.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Companion to the Video.......2001-04-23

When the television series Queer as Folk appeared on England's Channel 4 in 199 it caused quite an upheaval. QAF tackles the complex story of three Manchester gay men and their conflicts and relationships. It deals with sex and does not shy away from controversial subject matter. Fortunately, because of its beautiful handling, layered storylines, and complicated characters, it was a huge success. QAF, which follows the characters of Vince (Craig Kelly,) the overly kind and unintentionally celibate grocer, Stuart (Aiden Gillen), a wildly promiscuous executive, and Nathan (Charlie Hunnam), a 15-year old who falls in love with Stuart, is a highly important step for TV. This script is a good addition to the tape or DVD. It makes it easier for Americans to understand some of the British slang.
