5 out of 5 stars The leading book on Balinese dance.......2003-08-23

I am Balinese and the Balinese like this book.

It is a joint work - the text was written by Beryl de Zoete, a British dance critic, on the basis of notes and information given to her by Walter Spies, a German polymath, who lived in my village, Ubud, in the Thirties. Most of the photographs in the book are his.

My mother worked for Walter Spies. He lived in a small house, just opposite the place where my restaurant now is. Walter Spies was an artist, photographer, musician, anthroplogist and a person who attracted many famous people to Bali in the Thirties.

This book is very detailed and is the most comprehensive book written so far on Balinese dance and drama. It is rather difficult to follow what is going on in Balinese dance, and the explanations will undoubtedly help the traveler. Although detailed, it is readable.

There is a very good introduction by Professor Michael Hitchcock, who is an enthusiastic authority on many aspects of Balinese culture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-09-08

Excellent book for both those who are Bali newbies and those who already know about it, although it might be a little too detailed for some novices. Informative, with fantastic photos and drawings.

5 out of 5 stars A captivating tour of the history, style, and function .......2005-02-03

Suitable for all ages, Balinese Dance, Drama and Music covers how performing arts are learned in Bali, the principal Balinese values that artistic media passes on, and discussion of individual forms of performing arts, such as Gameland Gong Kebyar, Lgong Keraton, Baris, Wayang Kulit, and the relatively recent phenomenon of women's and children's performing groups. A bibliography and discography round out this superbly captivating survey, written by expert dancers and choreographers.

5 out of 5 stars CAPTURES THE MAGIC AND BEAUTY OF BALINESE CULTURE.......2005-01-14

This excellent book provides an extensive, reader-friendly overview of Balinese dance, music, drama and culture. It's the book we've all been waiting for. Written in an informal and high accessible style with wonderful pictures and illustrations it will no doubt be treasured by academics, Baliopihiles or anyone wanting to visit Bali and more deeply experience it's powerful culture. Rucina and Dibia (I know them both) are extraordinary and passionate lovers of all things Bali and have written and taught extensively for decades. If anyone was to write this book, they were the obvious choice.

There are dozens of books on this subject - most far too academic and inaccessible - including some of the classics. They got the information right, found the right expressive tone, and the layout is stunning.

A wonderful experience throughout!

5 out of 5 stars Kaja and Kelod a Fascinating, Informative Read.......1999-10-07

Kaja and Kelod: Balinese Dance in Transition is a true find. Sandwiched in the grey area between purely scholastic work and popular introduction, K&K succeeds at both. With excellent prose and intelligent progression, DeBoer and Bandem trace the history of Balinese dance through the decades. The beautiful pictures perfectly complement the writing. Throughout, Bandem and DeBoer delve deep into the particulars of their subject, without becoming unreadable to a layman. At times witty, always intelligent, Kaja and Kelod is a truly excellent work.

                5 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect.......2003-10-12

I originally purchased this book on account of its nice chapter on minimalism and its introduction by Philip Glass. Fortunately, I was very surprised to see myself devour the book's chapters on non-minimalist 20th century music as well. The book is well written and well categorized.

The book is essentially split into chapters based on style (in chronological order) starting with the very unknown 19th century American composers. The writing focuses more on the personal lives of the composers and how their pieces were received rather than a theoretical evaluation of style or its evolution. I actually prefer it be written this way since this book was my introduction to American classical music.

The minimalism chapter is good, especially when compared to other multi-stylistic books which only cover minimalism (and usually 20th century music) because they have to.

If I were teaching a class on 20th century music, this would definitely be a required text. Of particular interest is the concluding chapter on the author's views concerning the future of music; he brings up some interesting points worth mulling over.

I didn't care enough about the early American composers too much (Griffes, etc...), so my review doesn't reflect those chapters.

I certainly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in 20th century American acoustic music (electronic music isn't really covered).

                4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2002-12-12

Excellent book- full of information and very readable, without being too tecnical or pedantic. I might fault the author for being a bit sparse on 19th C. American composers, but this is a matter of personal judgement and the need to keep the book within manageable length. Also in 1998 fewer works by composers such as Fry, Bristow, Lambert and John Knowles Paine were available for listening.

                      Book Description

                      A New Breed of Adventurer

Whether wondrous or wicked, some monsters have a calling that reaches beyond the ordinary existence of their kind. Traveling alongside other intrepid characters, these heroic creatures carve their places in legend with sword, spell, tooth, and claw.

This supplement for the D&D game provides everything you need to play a monster as a character or to make the monsters your heroes fight even more formidable. Inside are over 50 all-new monster classes that show how creatures develop their characteristics and abilities as they gain levels. Along with new prestige classes and monster templates, Savage Species also features new feats, spells, magic items, and more.

To use this supplement, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual. A player needs only the Player's Handbook and the Monster Manual.

2 out of 5 stars excessive and a little confusing.......2006-03-14

The idea of playing monster pcs is really neat and interesting, but most of how to do that is covered in the monster manuals and is much easier to understand. I was a little befuddled at the many templates, which are neat unto themselves, I just don't really see spending time creating these creatures in a campaing. They are plenty of monsters and other supplemeants to create baddies for your pcs to deal with. A flying dog? Okay, so just have a dog with wings, no 'winged creature' templete really needed. Are you really going to use a gelatinous bear? Do you have the time and patience to come up with an appropiate balanced creature with all the stats and adjustmeants involved? To me, the templates are a long involved process that doesn't really lend to the creative process. A spectre lurker? Neat, but a little much for most players to accept. It was just wayy out there for the most part. Also not starting out at level one can be a bit confusing and these levels in monster are a bit much to grasp and handle. So you advance in levels, but don't get any benefit of a class until you reach 'x' level. So that means (and I'm not entirely sure on this one) you would have to play extra smart until you got your class going and what hit die would you use? 10, 12, 4? It doesn't usually say as far as the 'humanoid' is concerned. Also how would this monster character fit in? Wouldn't every civilization pretty much be afraid of them and try to kill them or run from them? It doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun and lots of requiremeants and stats and rules to keep up can seem like a nightmare propisition. I really felt like it was a rehash of the monster manual and the prestiage classes are a little to esoteric in a diverse game world. But if you just have a hankering to play monster characters, then perhaps this will help you, but otherwise they are other supplemeants to introduce you to various races that are d20 in nature and also done by wotc that you could include in your campaing without upsetting balance and causing confusion. I mean, Palladium fantasy has TONS of races that would fit right into your world, with of course appropiate adjustmeants with the stats and that is just one example, I'm sure there are plenty more that would fit the bill. This one, in my estimation, is like a steak that is just overcooked.

4 out of 5 stars Review for the Savage Species.......2005-07-25

It's a good aid for dungeon masters. Expecially when characters want to play something other than the standard character classes.
Many worked out examples and lots of guidelines for setting up your own monsters as player characters.

Though this text is a handsome volume, packed with cool ideas and tons of crunchy bits, and moreover though I happen to like it quite a lot, it does not fully overcome the charges levelled against it, namely:

--it is a partial rehashing of 2E's *Complete Book of Humanoids* (which is less serious than the following, since 3E is basically just a rehashing of 2E in general),

--its unfortunate partial obsolescence (3.5E does indeed provide LA for each "playable" creature in the most recent *MM*--though *Savage Species* will ultimately consider all creatures to be "playable," whereas *MM* clearly does not), and

--the sad fact that WotC invests what must be approaching $0 in copyediting.

Those reservations noted, it must be said that the text opens up in 3E a new vista; instead of relying on the vanilla races of the *PH*, one can now, say, run a party of harpy infiltrators, a band of trollish barbarians, a medusa rogue, or (gods forbid it) a hive of illithids, demons, or some other uberpowerful beasties as PCs. (Though the *DMG* hints at such a vista, its suggestions proved to be unwieldy, incomplete, and generally confusing to most of us gamer-geeks.)

The text has many virtues in this regard:

                      1) new feats, spells, items, and prestige classes for monstrous folk, all generally well conceived.

                      2) some fair-to-middling notes on how to run a campiagn centered on the misadventures and cross accidents inevitably encountered by a group of bugbear PCs, for instance.

                      3) loads of bombass templates (these really are worthy of attention).

                      4) the reconceptualization of the game system entirely in terms of class--now, everything is a matter of class--no more monster advancing by the nebulous Hit Die (but this still doesn't resolve the bizarre aspect that Hit Die never correlated with CR; recall that level in a PC class always correlates with CR--why the inconsistency?).

                      5) tons and tons of statistical tables (the true value of the text). These also come with a set of guidelines to produce similar "class template" tables for any monster in the system--a very high degree of diversity for any game, which is surely a plus.

                      6) the introduction of both the "half-ogre" and "anthropomorphic animal" standard PC races (very good additions to the rules).

                      7) some very fine artwork

In these respects, there is value here, but unfortunately the aforementioned problems will limit its appeal and utility.

2 out of 5 stars This book is not necessary with 3.5.......2004-02-22

If your playing with the 3.5 player's handbook, monster manual, and dungeon master's guide; this book is unnecessary. Because many ELs and LAs have been adjusted, and the entire system for LAs has been simplified with 3.5, this book has been rendered somewhat obsolete. It's best remaining features are some of it's example content (spells/feats/example progressions), but this book isn't going to be as helpful at a 3.5 table running a game using level adjustments.

2 out of 5 stars Great concept gone horribly wrong.......2003-12-20

Well, the book starts out with a great concept- Monster races as PC's and how to balance them. It also introduces the idea of "monster class progression"- which allows one to start a beginning campaign with a "first level rakshasa" if one gets DM OK.

How did this brilliant idea go so very wrong? First is the literaly scads of typos & mistakes. Nearly every "monster class" has several very significant errors (the Rakshasa does not have any natural armour listed, for instance). WotC has also failed to do any Errata on this book- so far (and it seems doubtful- see next paragraph).

But worse is the timing and planning. The book was pushed as being compliant with 3.5, but after the 3.5 MM came out, it was clear that Savage Species was anything but. Thus, a fairly expensive book became mostly obsolete within months of it's publication.

Still, there is an extensive system the DM can use to design his own "monster classes", and this remains useful. But the timing & errors make this book a bad buy for the player who has updated to 3.5.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhhh the good ole' days!.......2006-05-06

After having played the newer 3rd Edition of Dungeons and Dragons for quite some time, I thought I'd take a little trek down memory lane and order an artifact from the past - the old AD&D Monstrous Manual. My, how things have changed in just over a decade! Every official D&D product coming out now is made by Wizards of the Coast , a company owned by Hasbro, maker of such childish wonders as Barbie and Ken. It goes without saying that due to it's parent company, Wizards only produces glitzy, "best foot forward" material that is much more family friendly and lot less "nude woman" oriented than what we enjoyed in times of old. Reading through this nigh on ancient volume reminds me both of how insanely cool Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was, and of how incredibly nerdy we must have all seemed.

The art throughout the book ranges the gamut from really great (See the "Gnoll" creature, which looks suspiciously like a DiTerlizzi work, the guy famous for doing all the Planescape artwork), to laughably cartoonish (see the "Bullywug" creature), to the outright bad (see the "Goblin" illustration. I get the feeling an artist was running too close to the deadline for publication, and had his pre-teen kid do a sketch, which he then submitted as his own). While some of the artwork has become considerably higher quality with the transition to 3rd Edition, most notably with the dragon illustrations, a lot of it actually took a step back. The Dryad, Elementals, and Hobgoblin all look a lot better here than in the newer editions. The whole book has an extremely nostalgic feel. Anyone who was fortunate enough to have played AD&D will be going through a minor rapture perusing the various pages. And fear not fans of the old school art, for large chested women with very little clothes on abound throughout!

A rather wide range of creatures exist in the Monstrous Manual, as this book was TSR's response to players demands for all the various monster books to be condensed into one tome which could be transported more easily. All the standard D&D creatures are here, along with various monsters from the Forgotten Realms, Al-Quadim, Planescape, and Dark Sun campaign settings. It certainly isn't entirely comprehensive, but it's pretty darn close. The format of the monster entries is far more readable in this book than in the 3rd Edition monster manuals. All the basic info you would need to use the creature in a campaign is listed at the top of the page. There is just enough information present to make the creature easily useable, but not enough so that you have to search for anything. I've noticed however that there are no "common" monsters. All creatures in this manual get a "Frequency" stat, describing how often they are found in their normal climate or terrain. Every monster is either uncommon, rare, or (most often) very rare. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense, considering how monster infested any D&D campaign world is. Even the races that players can use as characters, such as the dwarves and elves, are listed as "uncommon".

With how cheap this book is going for these days, any old school fan, or even someone who just wants to understand what we were all so obsessed about, should definitely pick this up.

                      5 out of 5 stars monstrous manual.......2004-07-12

This was one of the best products I have ever used. It has an incredible attention to detail and is complete in it's descriptions. This book is also exteremely easy to use as a DM. The information is provided in a clear way and is devided into intro, combat, habitat/society, and ecology. But even beond it's usefullness to a DM, I found myself reading this book for fun and enjoyment quite often. It has been around 4 or 5 years since i first bought this book and i still read it for enjoyment. I recomend this book to every DM everywhere. It is helpful, fun to read, and easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASY QUEST HAVEN...this is THE book to own!.......2004-01-07

Anybody who is really into or owns versions of the popular Dungeon Master(DM) of the Advanced Dundeons & Dragons (AD&D) Role-playing games should definitely make an investment into this book. Not only is it very detailed, and appropriately alphabetical, but lists complete data info on each monster through fantasy, mythology, or in some cases reality.

I was much of a fan of fantasy games until I started a collection of Sony PlayStation games, and with the technology that can knock your socks off nowadays, the visuals in monster morphing are great. When you reading through chapters you may discover certain things about monsters you never knew before. For instance the different varieties of dragons; not just the most common green, but the red, black, white, and blue, and the book details their attack status and breathing weapon. Like sea monsters? There is also hydras and whales.

Real die hard fantasy fans will have fun reading over the trolls, purple worms, cerberus, and scorpions. I seem to remember an older version of this book that also listed hornet wasps. Upon damage if a hornet gets its' wings burned off, the creature is not damaged, but is now flightless.

If you love DUNGEONS and DRAGONS from old Odyssey games, witchcraft, bats, and warlocks are also listed. I found information on Golems (Frankenstein's Monster for instance is a Flesh Golem), Mummies, and Vampires informative. Did you know werewolves aren't the only lycanthropes. The book is rich with information on weretigers, wereboars, wererats, and even werebears. There are also weredragons, but they aren't listed.

Definitely worth the investment, and I would highly recommend picking it up together with the ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: VOLUME 4 and the MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM ANNUAL. This will make your game playing trivia complete!

                      5 out of 5 stars 2nd Addition RULES!.......2003-11-23

It's true, and this particular book is an excellant rendition of just how good 2nd edition is. The book gives huge amounts of information on monsters (which is an excellant aid to DMs) and the pictures are great. I highly recommend it for all DMs who have a nostalgia for 2nd Edition, which is all I play.

5 out of 5 stars An essential for any ad&d DM.......2001-11-21

This book is one of the three books that are essential to running a game of AD&D2e(Players' Handbook, Monstrous Manual). It concisely describes all the elements involved in running a fun, exciting campaign for everyone involved. It is also commendable in that it tells you often that the rules outlined are merely guidelines- nay, suggestions, and it encourages you to make your own rules.
One thing I would have liked would be some more actual examples of gameplay, as this would help new DMs to get the feel of the game quickly. But these can be found elsewhere to those who care to look.
Overall, a very useful book. An indispensible resource to any DM.

A murderer is stalking the streets of the St. Louis, and the only connection between his victims are the nightlines -- special phone lines used by the phone company to test equipment. At night, lonely people use them to make contact with each other: to talk, to meet, perhaps, to have someone who will care, even if just for a moment, anonymously. But something has gone horribly wrong, and people are dying. Private eye Alo Nudger is part of the network now, and he soon discovers the very special lure of the nightlines when he falls in love with a woman he meets over them -- a woman who may be the next victim....

This book chronicles the ABC News program Nightline from it's beginning, as a national news update special report (following local 11pm news) to inform the public of the on-going Iran hostage crisis as it continued to drag on. Nightline freed ABC news' local and national news divisions to return to every day news stories, something that it has ceased to do since the crisis began. After the crisis Nightline continued to break ground, being the first to report on such controversial and important stores as the AIDS epidemic, for example.
Ted Koppel's first person narrative is both easy to follow, wonderfully interesting and is hard to put down. It made me respect him and the show even more than I already had, if that's even possible!

For millions of Americans, 'Nightline' is as much a part of the bedtime ritual as brushing their teeth. At the show's 1980 debut, Ted Koppel's detached but approachable style immediately marked him as a serious journalist, and disgruntled TV viewers sat up and took notice. Since then Koppel has continued to revolutionize the art of the television interview with his intelligence and low-key authority. With Kyle Gibson, a former 'Nightline' producer, he has authored a remarkable memoir of the show's first 16 years.

                            5 out of 5 stars A must-read for NIGHTLINE fans!.......1996-12-28

The use of statellite technology for live interviews around the globe is so ubiquitous that you almost forget a time without it. NIGHTLINE is the program that pioneered this technology and showed how it could bring newsmakers on all points of the globe together for debate and discussion. The book recounts in well-researched detail the events that led to the birth of the program, its evolution and continued development. Fans of the show will enjoy all the nuggets of information: the circumstances that led to an unknown correspondent to be the permanent host; the selection of the name itself; details of experiments that failed. Though billed as being by Ted Koppel and Kyle Gibson, Koppel makes it clear that the book is largely Gibson's. Gibson was a producer for the program for several years but has moved on to other posts within ABC News. This is another benefit of the book: she brings the perspective of having been an insider while not being too close to the project. You'll enjoy the many excerpts of memorable programs and exchanges, and Koppel's hidden sense of humor shines through.
