Customer Reviews:
A Phenomenal Read!!!.......2007-07-09
I could not put the book, "Conversations With Brando," down once I began reading it. As a Marlon Brando devotee, I was so very pleased to open the book and find that the largest part of the book is composed of Marlon Brando's own words. I could have listened to this man talk all day long, every day of every week. And, in this book, he is at his incredible best -interesting, intelligent, witty, sensitive, idealistic, real, wise, inspirational, poignant, reflective, philosophical, poetic; humanitarian. I love his eccentric ways and I respect his principles of character - standing up for the causes of the voiceless in the world. I appreciate that he bowed to no one when the convictions of his heart and his conscience were at stake.
Most of all, when Marlon's children were in trouble, he made the kinds of sacrifices and suffered in ways that only a father whose children are his whole heart would have done.
What a beautiful man Marlon was and what an exemplary, praiseworthy piece of work Lawrence Grobel has done with "Conversations With Brando."
Interesting.......2001-04-27
This expanded on the PLAYBOY interview it's adapted from. Brando is a good storyteller, and tells some good stories in here. Grobel does preface the interview with phone call transcripts of him talking to Brando, and his secretary. And I know someone close to Brando, and some in the Brando camp felt some annoyance that Grobel taped the phone conversations without saying they were being taped. A bit presumptuous. But an interesting interview nonetheless.
As complicated & brilliant as its subject.......2000-08-23
The interview that this book is based on was conducted before Brando filmed "Superman" but I can't imagine that Brando has changed much since. Grobel shows his skills as an interviewer by originally agreeing to only talk about the Native American cause with Brando but eventually teasing out anecdotes about acting, sex, stalkers, Brando's upbringing and much more. Grobel does not try to outsmart Brando, even while he is trying to sneak in forbidden acting/movie questions. He faces his subject head-on and when Brando chooses to speak about his hated profession, he is extremely entertaining. He shows Brando as a very complicated man who is hard to dislike - even if you don't agree with his politics, you come away from the book thinking that Brando is a charming, intelligent, thoughtful and super-talented individual who deserves all the praise for his acting skills. This interview could be considered his greatest performance - it comes from the same honesty that he invested his early screen and stage characters with.

Book Description
A landmark in jazz studies, Thinking in Jazz reveals as never before how musicians, both individually and collectively, learn to improvise. Chronicling leading musicians from their first encounters with jazz to the development of a unique improvisatory voice, Paul Berliner documents the lifetime of preparation that lies behind the skilled improviser's every idea.
The product of more than fifteen years of immersion in the jazz world, Thinking in Jazz combines participant observation with detailed musicological analysis, the author's experience as a jazz trumpeter, interpretations of published material by scholars and performers, and, above all, original data from interviews with more than fifty professional musicians: bassists George Duvivier and Rufus Reid; drummers Max Roach, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Akira Tana; guitarist Emily Remler; pianists Tommy Flanagan and Barry Harris; saxophonists Lou Donaldson, Lee Konitz, and James Moody; trombonist Curtis Fuller; trumpeters Doc Cheatham, Art Farmer, Wynton Marsalis, and Red Rodney; vocalists Carmen Lundy and Vea Williams; and others. Together, the interviews provide insight into the production of jazz by great artists like Betty Carter, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, and Charlie Parker.
Thinking in Jazz overflows with musical examples from the 1920s to the present, including original transcriptions (keyed to commercial recordings) of collective improvisations by Miles Davis's and John Coltrane's groups. These transcriptions provide additional insight into the structure and creativity of jazz improvisation and represent a remarkable resource for jazz musicians as well as students and educators.
Berliner explores the alternative ways—aural, visual, kinetic, verbal, emotional, theoretical, associative—in which these performers conceptualize their music and describes the delicate interplay of soloist and ensemble in collective improvisation. Berliner's skillful integration of data concerning musical development, the rigorous practice and thought artists devote to jazz outside of performance, and the complexities of composing in the moment leads to a new understanding of jazz improvisation as a language, an aesthetic, and a tradition. This unprecedented journey to the heart of the jazz tradition will fascinate and enlighten musicians, musicologists, and jazz fans alike.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, with a lot of musical examples.......2007-06-22
This is a very well written and thought out book. It is not really an instructional text, but it could be used that way. Most of the book is easy to understand, except for a few technical things here and there that only trained musicians would understand. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to study Jazz in a musical way or people who just want to expand their understanding of music in gereral. This would make a great book to use at universities. The last section of the book contains actual musical examples of what is talked about in previous chapters, so if you can read music this is a great tool for musicians of all levels.
Comprehensive Appraisal of Jazz.......2007-05-26
It is well written ....having a well documented base with a historical background and a didactic perspective...Very good book.
Very good book for a guy that knows something about music theory.......2007-03-08
I'm new in the world of Jazz and Music Theory. This is a great book for anyone that is trying to learn the language of Jazz.
In its first part, I was thinking about buying another two copies to give to a Philosopher and a Rock and Brazilian Music Drummer that both are big Jazz listeners and collectors. The first part of the book is about the beginning of the Jazz training, and it has also great information about the American Black Community.
I gave up the idea because its impossible to talk about how to think in jazz without mentioning harmony, scales, chords and rhythm and to find out what he is talking about it's important to have some Music Theory notions.
But it is very easy to read (never boring), in spite of its great rigor. So I'm really delighted with it and I'm planning to read it again when my reading becomes better (half of it are examples written in notation) and theory knowledge becomes stronger.
Shallow.......2004-12-27
Mr. Berliner reduces the Art of Jazz Improvistaion to nothing more than rote regurgitation of memorized licks and phrases. The True Nature of Jazz Improvisation is much more profound than his book describes. His work is perhaps usefull in understanding one small, peripheral aspect of Jazz Improvisation, but anyone who would like to seriously understand the Artform needs to take his point of with the understanding that is only a small fragment of what a musicians Mind, Body and Soul process to create truly spontaneous beauty, which is the Real and True Art of Jazz.
A Monumental Breakthrough in Jazz Studies ! ! ! ! ! ! !.......2001-10-22
The blurb on the back cover of this book has a slight understatement... It begins, "A landmark in jazz studies,"
Not since the advent of the long playing record and the publication of Leonard Feather's "Encyclopedia of Jazz" has anyone made such an enormous, substantive, light shedding contribution to Jazz (outside a recording studio.) This book is a must for everyone... and in fact, its divided into two parts... one which *is* for everyone, and goes into how musicians come up, hone their skills, learn to interact, develop and whatnot, and then the second half, which is more for musicians and features close to 400 pages of musical examples - - a text book in musical studies itself.
As a musician myself, I have long suspected that Jazz isn't just a bunch of patterns and scales. It is a culture, an attitude, an approach, and way of thinking... this book not only confirms it, but it substantively will take you into the mind of its foremost vetarans and practitioners. With its balance between information that's anecdotal as well as analytical, and Berliner's excellent writing style (despite the size of the book, he just draws you in the pages flow by one by one) - - this is must reading...
Almost a half a century ago Leonard Feather told us about the masters, now Berliner draws us into their minds. It is my hope that Jazz students (and fans) alike will begin taking up this book as they begin their journeys, and as a result, it invigorates and revitalizes the music as its never been before !

Book Description
Just over 100 years ago, Emile Berliner invented the gramophone and disc record. This is the first discography assembled of the first disc recordings in the United States. It documents over 3,000 discs, which were sold to the American public from 1892 to 1900. Listings are arranged by catalogue number and cross-indexed by title, performer, and recording date. The gramophone discs are valuable research tools in the study of popular culture, providing objective data about what was offered to the public, and how it was performed. Since this information has never been published, scholars may well find new materials. Berliner's successor was the Victor Talking Machine Company (an ongoing Greenwood discography series). An introductory essay discusses the earliest years of the invention and the repertoire appearing on the discs. Their physical properties are noted and illustrated with photographs of the records. A descriptive bibliography guides readers to other books and articles of interest. Another section lists Berliner Gramophone records that have been reissued on long-playing and compact discs. This volume will be of interest to gramophone record collectors, record archives, and music libraries, as well as to scholars, music students, and buffs.

Book Description
Along with Robert Gober and Jeff Koons, New York-based Haim Steinbach is one of the most renowned exponents of the late 70s art movement which endeavored to revamp the post-Duchamp tradition of ready-mades in the face of a rising wave of neo-expressionism. Steinbach has become known for his "thing altars," carefully manufactured shelves containing borrowed or purchased objects that take on new meaning in the context of their surroundings, recalling Robert Smithson's notions of "site" and "non-site." This new book in the Cantz Series documents a Berlin-specific installation by the artist. Steinbach, born to German-Jewish parents in Israel, stayed in the former East Germany for the first time, visiting families all over Berlin and borrowing individual objects or arrangements which he then transferred to an art space. In doing so the artist became the curator of a sort of group exhibition of "collected collections" which interact in surprising ways in their new space.

Customer Reviews:
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2005-10-11
Very addictive and fun! Went through some puzzles while waiting in the airport and it absolutely made the time fly.
Review of The Sudoku Book.......2005-10-08
This is a good book for beginners as well as the more advanced. It offeres a how-to section in the beginning along with three levels of puzzles. The small size makes it easy to take with you and it is overall fun to do. I highly recommend this product to all customers.
Sudoku Puzzles.......2005-10-06
As a new "addict," I found this book to be just right. The divisions of "Easy" "Moderate" "Hard" and "Very Hard" are pretty much on target. The "Easy" puzzles I could manage fairly well. I also found the Tips to be helpful. I find that the more I work the puzzles the more I can apply the tips. "Moderate" puzzles are obviously more challenging as are the "Hard" ones. I have yet to attempt a "Very Hard" puzzle, but that day will come soon.
Relaxing and Enjoyable.......2005-09-29
I enjoy this book simply because since I have asthma, it tends to flair up a lot during the summer mostly. Since I bought Sudoku, it relaxes me and I enjoy it at the same time. It keeps my mind on edge, constantly thinking, which I love.
It is a very good book because it also has beginner to expert, and it shows you how to do it. It is easy and hard at the same time, but very good.
I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys puzzles and likes to work their brain.
too small.......2005-09-22
While the puzzles are good, the format of the book made it very awkward. Tho the size made it easy to slip in a pocket or purse, the binding was so stiff that it was very hard to work on the puzzles. I would have a hard time recommending this book to someone else.
