Book Description

From the Academy Award-winning writer-director of Almost Famous, the script for one of the year's most eagerly anticipated films.

In Vanilla Sky, Tom Cruise stars as David, a young New York City publishing magnate who finds himself on an unexpected roller-coaster ride of romance, comedy, suspicion, sex, and dreams in what turns out to be a mind-bending search for his soul. Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell, Jason Lee, Noah Taylor, and Cameron Diaz also star in this haunting investigation of beauty, love, and betrayal, which is bound to become one of the most talked about films of 2001.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-12

I agree very much with the view above. The people I speak to about this film either love it or hate it. I find that those who hate it largely dont understand the plot, or have a short attention span. It is a great film, and one for those who like to think differently from time to time. The plot is tricky at times, but if you stick with the challenge you will be thoroughly rewarded at the end. It is one of my favourite films, I am yet to see however it's predorcessor 'Abre los ojos', which I here is even better.

5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2003-01-09

Combined with the film, Cameron Crowe--adaptation or not--has created a work of brilliance in this screenplay. For those of you who loved the movie I would highly reccomend the screenplay as well for some cut dialogue, additional scenes, and a slightly different ending. In addition, reading the screenplay has further deepened my appreciation for the great acting performances in this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Open your eyes wide shut.......2002-12-22

The first question that begs to be asked, is why was this movie made? Abres Les Ojos -Open Your Eyes, is a clever, intelligent film that is a good companion film to various virtual reality & dream oriented films. This is a pale, commercial remake of the film.

Tom Cruise plays cocky, self assured men in action films best. He has a decent physical presence that works well in comedies & action films. He was decent in Jerry Maguire & Eyes Wide Shut. Perhaps he was attracted to the film because it is supposed to be a psychological thriller & has a similiar title to Eyes Wide Shut. However, it doesn't work here. The character is supposed to be a shallow, confused young man who is still trying to find his identity. He has all the superficial success, but feels empty & incomplete. He ends up being a tormented Goethe/Dostevsky type character, but Cruise does not know how to play this type of character. This is a film about shaping your dreams, about discovering your identity & really living your life. But this version does not acheive that.

The actors play the story too light heardedly and are not complex
and multi-dimensional. Crowe's decisions to alter some of the details of the plot don't make sense. He attempts to make the female characters more sympathetic & less manipulative & the main character less violent. Usually I applaud a feminist version, but it doesn't work this time. The original version is much darker.

If you don't like reading subtitles, you can get the dubbed version of Abres les Ojos. I also highly recommend The Lathe of Heaven, Brazil, Existanz, Dark City & City of Lost Children.
The Lathe of Heaven is much more subtle, but acting is far superior & that was a made-for-TV film.

4 out of 5 stars Vanilla Sky + Abre Los Ojos = Great Cinamatic Experience.......2002-11-13

As an film director/producer, I love this film. However, to truly feel it's soul you must see Alejandro Amenabar's piece, Abre los ojos. I call it a "piece", because I feel that it's a work of art in it's own right. Now, if you view the two films and come away uneffected then never watch another film, stick to movies, i.e. Spiderman, Home Alone, etc...
Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell, Jason Lee, and Cameron Diaz give performances that gel wonderfully and make this a must see.

This film will challenge you, you must be prepared to think and feel, and believe me you will.

Live the Dream

1 out of 5 stars crowe's attempt to be "arty" is what kills this movie.......2002-02-28

Do yourself a favor and run from this movie. The above reviewer discussed how there are people who view movies for entertainment and there are those who are looking for something more. Well, as a film student I look for more and definitely had to search for something worth while in this movie. Cameron Crowe perhaps believes that frantic cutting pace and intense colors makes this a "film" when in fact it simply ruins the entire experience. The plot is different, and will take patience to take in for most, but it is not a horrible plot..at least in the original. The twists and turns will exhilirate you in the original while in the remake you'll find yourself feeling completely apathetic towards the protagonist and wondering why you wasted money to watch Tom Cruise play Jerry Maguire (also directed by cameron crowe) and his struggle between success and his conceitedness and reality all over again. Save yourself some time and money and view the original. Remakes almost never fit the bill, and American remakes are far too commercial, especially when redone by someone as mainstream as Crowe. One thing I will recommend is the soundtrack, Cameron Crowe used to be a music critic and it shows in his fine selection of music for the film.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Breezin' through Benson.......2004-06-17

Wolf Marshall has been industriously turning out transcriptions and re-recordings of major jazz guitarists' soli for about three years now. "Best of George Benson" is one of his early efforts in this vein, and has since been joined by works on Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Grant Green and Joe Pass.
The book is balanced roughly equally between Benson's early recordings and his later CTI and commercial career. The early studies include the "Easy Living" chord solo from "The New Boss Guitar of...," "Clockwise" and "Stormy Weather" from "It's Uptown," "The Cooker" and "The Borgia Stick" theme from "The George Benson Cookbook," and "Billie's Bounce" from "Giblet Gravy." The CTI phase of his career represented in this book and recording includes "So What" from "Beyond the Blue Horizon," "Body Talk" from the album of the same title, and "Take Five" from "Bad Benson." "Breezin'," "This Masquerade," and "Affirmation" are all from 1976's "Breezin'." The book closes (somewhat incongruously) with "C-Smooth" from 1998's "Standing Together."
The transcriptions are clearly printed, meticulously detailed, and annotated by Wolf Marshall, who draws upon years of transcription and guitar performance experience to discuss departures from conventional chord changes, unusual passages, and linkages to past and contemporary jazz musicians. The transcriptions typically include the introductions and heads of the tunes as well as Benson's solos. Marshall's choices of material scruple to adhere mostly to Benson's more important work while giving a chronological overview of Benson's evolution. In this light it's easy to see why there's such a focus on "Breezin'"- arguably Benson's most important album in terms of his own career, and also possibly the single most influential album of the Benson oeuvre - even though most guitar nuts might prefer Benson's exciting explorations of the early 70s (even those from other leaders' albums - it's a shame licensing for transcriptions doesn't apparently extend to albums by Freddie Hubbard). The inclusion of "C-Smooth" from 22 years after "Breezin'" seems almost an afterthought. One can almost hear Marshall saying "...and now he's doing this..." but without much evolutionary context, it's not as appreciable, perhaps. Still, there are limits to what both media and market will accept, and I am very grateful to have access to as much insight as has been granted here.
The recording is beautifully (and very clearly) done by a small group led by Marshall, who does an admirable job of replicating the early frenetic Benson of "...Cookbook" as well as the comparatively mellow Benson of "Breezin'." The audio has been mixed with the guitar to one side so that the CD may be used as a play-along as well as an audio reference.
All in all, this is really wonderful work, documenting as it does the uniquely American art form of jazz guitar, and helping its legacy inform the future. I look forward to other and forthcoming volumes in Wolf Marshall's series.

After waiting feverishly for this music book to arrive, I realized immediately on its receipt that it wasn't written in guitar tabulature, but standard notation. Since I don't read standard notation, it might as well be in braille. And because I know Benson uses some pretty interesting chords, the simple chords they use in the book can't possibly be right. If you're looking for a TABULATURE version of his work, look elsewhere.

I purchased this item as a Christmas gift for my sister who is a big Jumble fan. She loved it and claims that some of the jumbles are a bit of a challenge. The print is oversized for easy reading. A great gift for those hard to buy for also!!

                Book Description

Acclaimed media scholars Farnsworth and Lichter draw on the lessons of the last four presidential elections to show how network news coverage of what is arguably the nation's most important political event has declined. Through extensive analysis of news content, the authors compare what the candidates said with what the networks say they said and judge the disparity a nightmare. What may make it even harder to sleep at night is that the authors go on to suggest that perhaps the candidates themselves do a better job of portraying the campaigns than those who used to be the trusted network guardians of the news. Overall, a good read. The authors give considerable insight about the facts. However they do show a bias. For example, they seems to, at times, take pot shots at the New Hampshire population. These insults are completely unnecessary and takes away from the book's value. I would mildly recommend the book to read but I would not go out of my way to find it.
