Book Description

In A New History of Japanese Cinema Isolde Standish focuses on the historical development of Japanese film. She details an industry and an art form shaped by the competing and merging forces of traditional culture and of economic and technological innovation. Adopting a thematic, exploratory approach, Standish links the concept of Japanese cinema as a system of communication with some of the central discourses of the twentieth century: modernism, nationalism, humanism, resistance, and gender.

After an introduction outlining the earliest years of cinema in Japan, Standish demonstrates cinema's symbolic position in Japanese society in the 1930s - as both a metaphor and a motor of modernity. Moving into the late thirties and early forties, Standish analyses cinema's relationship with the state-focusing in particular on the war and occupation periods. The book's coverage of the post-occupation period looks at "romance" films in particular. Avant-garde directors came to the fore during the 1960s and early seventies, and their work is discussed in depth. The book concludes with an investigation of genre and gender in mainstream films of recent years.

In grappling with Japanese film history and criticism, most western commentators have concentrated on offering interpretations of what have come to be considered "classic" films. A New History of Japanese Cinema takes a genuinely innovative approach to the subject, and should prove an essential resource for many years to come.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The most informative historical survey of Japanese film industry.......2006-03-25

Isolde Standish has written what I think to be the most informative and convincing historical survey (in english) on the rich tradition of film production in Japan. Donald Richie, in the same year (2005), also published (yet again) another book on the history of Japanese cinema (actually the hardback was pub. in 2002 but the paperback came out this last year). Although Richie's book was just a new, updated edition of already published material I picked it up along with this book and read them together. There was a world of difference between the two, and I must say that I favored (by a long shot) the method and approach of Standish over that of Richie. Besides, it is nice to hear another voice in the discourse other than that of "the most authoritative critic of Japanese cinema." No one remains authority forever and, if you ask me, Richie's time is up.

As funny as it sounds, what makes this book more interesting is that it is much more historical. The book pays careful, constant attention to the socio-political contexts that undoubtedly inform and affect the cultural production of the times - and it does this in both national and global terms. Standish investigates how 'national cinema' functions -in the context of economic and societal transition- to shape and affect the perpetual constructions of national consciousness and identity. Suprisingly, she concentrates less on the effects of after-the-fact, direct censorship and more on the preliminary economic rationalization and verticle organization of studios and production companies as that which produces the most social impact. She poses questions about the rise and fall and ultimate ineffectiveness of 'leftist tendencies' films. She offers interesting analysis on the relation between the increase in speed and movement of bodies in 'chanbara' action films and the contemporaneous development of industrialization. Perhaps what is most fascinating in her study is her focus on the re-negotiations of gender politics as seen in popular narrative films in the context of the historical transitions from early to late 20th century society.

The peak of this book is definitely her coverage and analysis of cinema during the years of militarism and those of the occupation period. However, like any comprehensive survey of Japan's cinematic hisory that I have read, the book becomes more brief and hurried as one approaches the more contemporary era. Yet, at least she does mention and even explore (but only briefly) some of the more recent achievements. Unfortunately, I give this book 4 instead of 5 stars for this minor flaw. I'm saving my 5th star for that book that is bold enough to cover more recent ground at considerable length.

Also, one other great thing about this book (unlike some) is that every film that Standish 'reads' or analyzes at great depth is accessible to the public. I am pretty sure about this - but I could be wrong - I know that just about every film that receives attention can be accessed in some way. Blockbuster may not be a helpful resource here but amazon, libraries, and 'good' rental stores can provide that which is needed.

5 out of 5 stars A ground-breaking and original work .......2005-06-05

A New History Of Japanese Cinema: A Century Of Narrative Film by Isolde Standish (Film Studies Lecturer and Convenor of the MA Cinemas of Asia and Africa degrees, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) is a 414-page work of considerable scholarship providing the reader with an informed and informative historical survey of the Japanese film industry from its inception down to the present day. A New History Of Japanese Cinema details an industry and an art form as shaped by the competing and merging influences of traditional Japanese culture and 20th century economic and technological innovations. A ground-breaking and original work written with considerable expertise, A New History Of Japanese Cinema is enhanced with a section of "Reflections", extensive notations, a "Select Filmography", a "Select Bibliography", and an exhaustive index, making it especially recommended for academic library "Cinematic Studies" and "Japanese Popular Culture" reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars Great card games for all levels.......2007-03-09

My 4 year old son originally checked out this book from the local library. Every day he would request that we learn a new game. The book is filled with games for different ages and numbers of players so we are able to play games alone or as a family ( I also have a 7 year old son). We love to play games as a family and this has some great games for introducing your kids to cards and then it expands to more strategic games. I will note, however, that most of the instructions are listed in a page or two so it does not take long to learn a new game. This is a must for camping and also makes a great birthday gift.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and easy.......2006-06-23

Solo, family, and party games quickly and easily learned. Explanations and illustrations are clear and simple. Anticipates problems for new learners, recommends playing strategies. I cracked this open with my son (age 7) and we ended up playing "Eights" for two hours. Can't get any better than that! Looking forward to playing many of the other 50 in the book.

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model." The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member. --Richard Farr

    Book Description

Through vivid stories of the experiences of their patients (both adults and children), Drs. Hallowell and Ratey show the varied forms ADD takes -- from the hyperactive search for high stimulation to the floating inattention of daydreaming -- and the transforming impact of precise diagnosis and treatment.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best places to start.......2007-09-07

This book is a great resource for those who wonder if they may have some issues with ADD and ADHD (actually the same diagnosis) I originally bought this book to figure myself out (and subsequently saw clues to my mother's behavior all these years). WHen my youngest was diagnosed with ADHD, I re-read it to get the perspective of a child's struggle with ADD. Essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars Do you question what ADD is and whether you or someone you love has ADD?.......2007-08-20

This book can change your life. If you read this book, and you see your life history/story, maybe you should find out a little more about ADD and yourself. Or if you read this book and you see your husband, wife or child, this can be a first step in answering many questions.

5 out of 5 stars The classic for ADD information.......2007-08-18

I love this book, and have bought several copies over the years for newly diagnosed friends, etc. It is concise, clear and not overly stuffy. It doesn't throw a pity party like some books about disabilities do, and offers a diagnostic criteria, as well as coping skills, medical links, and resources listed in the back. A must read if you or anyone you love has ADD, or ADHD.

    5 out of 5 stars The BEST........2007-06-20

The absolute best book out there for an introduction to ADD. The structure of the book is perfectly managable for an ADDer without being condescendingly superficial or taking on a tone of talking to children, like some of these books do. I'd also recommend it to anyone who has friends or family who either doubt the existence of or (just don't know much about) ADD.
Check out Hallowell's "Delivered" for more coping mechanisms, and info on treatment, therapy and medication.

    5 out of 5 stars very helpful.......2007-06-17

If you wish to become more informed on the topic of ADD and ADHD,then this book is a "must read". The format is easy to read and understand. The reader can identify with one or more of the many examples and scenarios outlined in the book. I found it to be extremely helpful in understanding what ADD is really all about and what it feels like for my daughter to live with ADD.
In addition, I now recognize symptoms of adult ADD as well.

Get Driven to Distraction first, but this adds some lifestyle tips. A fair amount of repetition of the first book. It sure is cold in here.

    5 out of 5 stars ADD/ADHD IS REAL.......2006-03-15

This is a good book because of it's format; ie: Question/Answer. I think it might even be more helpful to those living with, or who associate with others who have ADD/ADHD.

To those who think ADD/ADHD is not real... your wrong. That being said, I wish to state here that it is not a defect. It is simply another brain/mind type. It is NORMAL, but it does not fit in with the majority. That is why we with ADD/ADHD struggle. We have to fit into a world set up for the majority. Once one learns that this is a GIFT rather than a disadvantage, it is incredibly freeing and even life saving. I know what I am talking about. I learned I had ADD when I was 37. I thank God every time I think about it that He made me this way. My advantages are far too numerous to list here, but suffice it to say, I can do what others only dream of because of this GIFT! My suggestion to all who are like me? Rejoice in it, and make it work FOR YOU. We are the dreamers of big dreams and we can make them HAPPEN.

    5 out of 5 stars Great AD/HD Resource.......2004-06-04

This a great AD/HD resource. The book is written in a very ADD friendly Q & A format. This book will anser many commonly asked AD/HD related questions. Many of the questioned answered are ones that you may have always wanted to know but were afried to ask.

This a great book to add your AD/HD Library.

4 out of 5 stars I'll show you my disease if you show me yours! Respond.......2004-05-05

That made me laugh. I have to ask do you believe in AIDS? Do you believe in cancer? Do you think people in wheel chairs can walk? If so way? Have you had any of them? Do you really know what they are like? How do you know they are real? How because science tells you and that same science also has done brain scans on people with AD/HD and has proven that it is real.

So I know people without ADD can have some traits of ADD like forgetting things, sure some people can be just like that but when you forget your own birthday, always lose your keys etc, never organised, can't concentrate for more then about 2 minutes, never on time for anything, poor sleeping habits, trouble learning what others find easy etc would you like me to go on?

If they sound like normal people to me god help us all.

3 out of 5 stars Answers to Review.......2004-03-18

Please disregard the top statement about ADHD being a medical fad. Obviously, he/she has never gone through a day of having ADHD. If this ADHD thing is such a fad, as he/she claims, then explain why studies have shown that well over 50% of those diagnosed with ADHD report major improvements after medication. ADHD research is not perfect, but it has benefited way too many people in this world to pass it off as just an excuse to sell pills.

I guarantee that the reviewer would not be diagnosed with ADHD, as he/she suggests. Doctors go through a series of questioning, and you will only be diagnosed unless your symptoms go over a certain threshold. You don't just get labeled with ADHD because you're forgetful or sometimes hyper; you have to display a certain level of symptoms. In extreme cases, it's almost impossible to deny: blurting out comments for no apparent reason, complete inability to sit still, etc....

ADHD research is not perfect. But just because it doesn't work for you or your family does not mean it applies to everyone. I'm sorry that your child was misdiagnosed, but a lot of people are diagnosed and helped. But for those who want to find information, I have (and most psychologists I know) recommended "Driven to Distraction". It's pretty much the most basic book you can find on the subject. If you are one of the fairly small percentage of adults who are constantly frustrated by a brain malfunction that makes you feel stupid (even though you know you're not), then please at least do the research. It couldn't hurt you to arm yourself with more information.

A walk on the wild side...Passing your fortieth birthday didn't mean you had to go off the deep end, did it? But there was no other explanation for the fact that usually sane single mother Maggie Burrows couldn't keep her thoughts-or her hands!-off a man who was nearly ten years younger than she was...

Of course, Tony Parnelli was drop-dead gorgeous, with a body that could melt the most sedate woman right down to her sensible shoes. But he was black leather and motorcycles, and she was mortgage payements and nine-to-five. Still, the tension between them could light up the sky-if only Maggie dared believe in Tony...and herself...

4 out of 5 stars Passionate story! Great read. (B+ Grade).......2002-10-07

Judith Duncan has written a gem of a book. The story is passionate and the love between the main two characters is strong and very loving. Sometimes the heroine Maggie was a little wishy washy and sad for no reason, but overall this books was great to read. Maggie is a 43 year old divorced mother of 3, 2 are in college and her youngest daughter is 15. She feels her life is boring and she is feeling lonely and old.... until 34 year old ex-cop Tony moves in next door and the sparks fly! tony is everything a woman would want in a man. He is sexy, loves animals and doesn't care that Maggie is older than him. Maggie has a big problem with being almost 10 years older than he is and it gets annoying because that is the only realy thing keeping them apart.
The chemistry between the two is practically scorching and Maggie's daughter Kelly is a mother's dream. There are mainy other secondary characters that also makes this book a fun read. You can find it on any on-line auction because it is out of print. Buy it!!

Tender Rhapsody (Worldwide/Harlequin Superromance No. 51)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Silhouette/Harlequin series romances.......2001-07-29

I've read this book several times. I rarely read the series romances anymore, but this one keeps dragging me back. This story features a woman in her early 40's (with 3 children from high-school to post-college) who meets a man who is ~15 years younger. Because she has low self-esteem and is very concerned with the age difference, she is afraid to become involved. Also, she is done with child-bearing and she is afraid that he will decide later that he wants to have children. He, however, is very sure of what he wants in life and knows that he wants her. This is a very humorous story of a woman who does not give herself nearly enough credit. I've tried to find other books by this author, but have only found a few and haven't found them to be this good. However, I highly recommend this one.
