Customer Reviews:
Esential reading for all aspiring writers.......2002-09-29
Most people have seen these four films. Far fewer have read the screenplays. Because of the diversity of the material and the quality of the writing, this book is truly essential to all writers, especially those who want to write for the screen. Goldman's screenplays are unique. In effect, he has invented his own screen language. He's that rare beast, a screenwriter who cares about style.
Prepare to be thrilled and inspired.
Great for fans of screenplays and of The Princess Bride.......2001-02-06
Well, I've always enjoyed reading screenplays. In addition, I've loved The Princess Bride since I first saw it. I also loved Misery. However, I hadn't seen Butch Cassidy yet. Reading the screenplay made it mandatory.
Goldman's comments about the movies are a wonderful addition to the screenplays. I highly recommend this book.
Wonderful companion guide to four great films.......1998-04-20
An enthusiastic 'thumbs-up' to William Goldman for including four essays to accompany his wonderful screenplays.
If you wonder why the author chose the idea of using the grandfather as the storyteller in the "Princess Bride" or how beloved Andre the Giant was on the set of the film then this book is a must-read.
Want to know which major scene with Kathy Bates in "Misery" was changed over the objections of the screenwriter? It's all here, colorfully annotated by the author in his essays that preface each screenplay.
The most entertaining book I've read so far this year (1998). If you've enjoyed these movies then, by all means, read this book!

Living Out Loud.......2007-09-21
I loved the little book which has plenty of exercises to fuel my creative energy.
LOVE IT!!!.......2007-09-19
I just got this book yesterday and LOVE IT! Only getting through the first few pages and already set my 33-Things To Do when I turn 33! Its an easy way to infuse creativity into everyday life which is exactly what I was looking for. Were all busy with family, work, obligations, and life in general This book is a good way to keep focused but still keep play and fun on your mind!
It's for females. Strong females but females........2007-04-20
My blog's gone flat these days and I was looking to color outside the lines a bit. Keri's book is great. The illustrations are fun and the tips are good but it's definitely targeted to women. I think I'll give it to my daughter when she's a bit older.
For instance: Under Solitude there is a page on "the Art of Resting" which depicts flannel pj's (I hate pajamas), endless cups of tea (I hate tea), it shows a woman sitting in a yoga position resting (I like to sit and relax just anyway I happen to flop down, I'm a terminally tired parent). All this stuff could be done by any guy, but the tone is clearly directed at gentle womanly stuff. Guys (and I've been characterized as overly sensitive) need an occasional aggressive outlet, it's just part of the biochemistry.
Good book, but read more carefully about it if you're male before buying.
Love Love Love this book!.......2007-01-06
This is one of my all-time favorite books! I love Keri Smith's style and try to emulate her creativity. Wonderful book!
Living Out Loud Review.......2006-08-06
I LOVE this book. It's filled with wonderful creative and inspiring ideas. I bought one for both of my sisters too!

Customer Reviews:
Competent columns on the everyday life of the writer.......2007-09-27
This book is a compilation of columns written by Quindlen for the 'New York Times'. In them she tells about her own life, as daughter, wife, mother and writer. She speaks about her early loss of her mother, about the joys and difficulties of raising her children, about many of the small obstacles and difficulties of everyday life. This is a competent work but one not as amusing or inspiring as I had hoped.
The best of the bunch.......2004-09-28
This is my favorite collection of Anna Quindlen--and I've read them all. I particularly liked the lifestyle pieces, her sensitivity and humanity and found myself saying OUT LOUD, "Yes, Anna! I understand."
You can keep this one with you and pick it up and put it down at will.
I particularly liked the piece, "Pregnant in New York," (a tough place to be pregnant--where ISN'T a tough place to be pregnant?) Also, "The Second Child." There are so many!
A big fan, I recommend all her collections.
Sweet Inspiration.......2004-06-17
I love Anna Q! I love anyone with a unique point of view on things! She is opinionated (she is a journalist!) but she always comes through in a warm and thought provoking way...the way only a mother could. Even the titles of her books I just love......"Living Out Loud"????? Very cute!!! She is a great role model for any woman, if you are looking for a little inspiration..............she has done it all! I have read everyone of her books.....so ditto this review to all of her work......Bravo!
Excellent and easily identifiable.......2001-12-14
Anna Quindlen articulates what so many of us are living in a manner that makes us think "Yes! THAT'S it!"
Perhaps she is living a more "affluent" life than many (most?) of her readers, but she doesn't dwell or rub our faces in it. Instead, she takes parenting, personality, work, marriage, and society at large and melds her experiences into the experiences of us all. She is both witty, and sentimental, and often just plain makes a reader think.
Perhaps as a writer, mother, spouse, and 30-something myself I feel an affinity for Ms. Quindlen that other readers would not. However, her fan base and following tell me I'm not alone. It's wonderful to have a collection of Quindlen handy for when we need to revisit facts and feelings of life in our world today.
what?.......2001-12-05
If you come from a privileged upbringing, "work" from home on your computer keyboard and consider yourself one of the vanguard of feminists who have changed the world for younger women, are busy having and raising children and are largely focused on the details of their juvenile worlds- except when you are quoting literature (does quoting it put you in those authors' company? not) have had unparalleled opportunities (read great luck) at a successful career and have largely been unbuffeted by the winds of fate, then you will enjoy this book. I was very disappointed after amazon's review. I find Ms Quindlen too smug to digest well. Her writing is often inane. She is neither "living out loud" nor is she speaking for the majority of women of her generation, just a small privileged subset. Her essays on what its like to be a working woman are particularly galling, when she is a woman who has married well and is able to work from home at very little inconvenience to her life and her career. She may write on these topics to convince herself of her need for household help; I remain unconvinced! Save your money and your mind.
Book Description
Living Islam Out Loud presents the first true generation of American Muslim women who have always identified as both American and Muslim. Without previous examples of how to be American Muslim women, these pioneers have had to forge new identities for themselves and for future generations. Writing from diverse experiences and perspectives, the contributors include Sarah El-Tantawi, who has spoken on Muslim issues on Politically Incorrect and Hardball, and Asra Nomani, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal. These voices, among others, speak out about the hijab (a traditional headscarf), relationships, sex and sexuality, activism, spirituality, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Not representative of most Muslim women.......2006-09-24
This book isn't very representative of most Muslim women in America or the issues they face and consider important. I've been a Muslim since I was 10 and have lived in two different cities. Of all the Muslim women I have met, none really cared about being an imam, including Muslim women raised in the US all their lives (that's a majority of the Muslim women I know). None have ever wanted to lead a mixed gender salat. We realize that some brothers do have a rather patriarchial understanding of Islam but we try to change from within the framework of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. That's why we're Muslim. We believe that the Qur'an and Sunnah should be our ultimate guide. Too many of the women in the book seemed to have an utter disregard for the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Fornication is wrong according to the Qur'an and Sunnah and there is no way to justify it as a Muslim. Homosexuality is wrong according to the Qur'an and Sunnah and there is no way to justify it as a Muslim. Hijab is mandated in Qur'an and Sunnah and it is mandated for Muslim women to marry Muslim men in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Somehow the essayists of this book missed these points.
In addition, I didn't find any of their suggestions (which weren't many) to be revolutionary. Asra Nomani says their need to be more women on the board of directors of masjids as if there aren't any masjids in America where there are women on the board. My mother has been on the board of her masjid for quite some time. In addition, she chairs two other committees. Most of the women who my mother has befriended also hold leadership positions and are working, professional women.
Many of the essays seemed like whiny tirades about mistreatment and abuse that may or may not have been the result of a warped interpretation of Islam. Frankly, many of their issues can be seen in any culture, Islamic or not.
Inspiring and Motivating, but not reflective of most American Muslim women.......2006-09-01
This book is very inspiring and motivational in its depictions of several Muslim American women activists and feminists and the obstacles they've had to overcome in voicing opinions that are often unheard or, worse, intentionally ignored by chauvinistic Muslims. I'm glad they came out with a book like this, especially one that is more reflective of the progressive outlook which many Muslims (myself included) would like to see more of.
However, I do think readers should be aware much of the content described in the book probably isn't reflective of the opinions held by most Muslim American women. As another reviewer noted, most of the women in the book are activists working for a change in their communities in the face of what they see as oppressive or patriarchal attitudes. The positions taken by some on women prayer leaders in mixed congregations, segregation in mosques, sexuality and homosexuality, and even women in leadership roles are not issues many religious Muslim American women see as a 'problem' or anti-female and in need of reinterpretation. Many would most likely disagree with these authors' solutions, as I'm sure some of them might probably disagree on certain issues amongst themselves.
Hopefully with more honest and open-minded literature by Muslims like this book, Muslim men and women alike will at least be better aware of the 'reality' of Islam in America which we must deal with, whether one agrees with others' viewpoints or not. Hearing everyone's voice is the most important idea to take from this book.
It depends on what you want from this book.......2006-08-25
I wanted to find out how Muslim women in the USA live their religion. For me, therefore, I didn't want to only hear from Muslim feminists rallying for their cause. I wanted to also hear from American Muslim women who were satisfied with the way they lived their religion here in the USA and what they liked about their religion and why Christianity didn't seem fitting for them. I didn't get that. And many of the chapters simply seemed like "rah, rah, let's change this and that!" It was like going to a political rally for one side. I didn't feel like I learned a heck of a lot.
some interesting insight.......2006-07-03
As an American woman who is considering converting to Islam, this book gave me a much needed window into the life of Muslim women. The personal stories told in this book present both the positive and the negative aspects of Islam in terms of a female experience. I consider it a useful resource for any woman is considering Islam, or anyone who wants to get a realistic understanding of the position of women in Islam.
Great addition to any Islamic library.......2006-03-16
I am not Muslim but I enjoy learning about religions different from my own. I thought I already knew a lot about Islam but this book taught me some new things. It is a book written by various influential muslim women telling their stories. The stories are separated into sections based on what they are discussing. I especially liked the essays on love, marriage and sexuality. I learned reasons why some Muslim women wear hijab and some don't. There are many reasons actually, all of which make sense to me. I don't know which choice I would make if I were Muslim. I learned that Islam does NOT allow their men to beat their wives as many mistakenly believe. I learned that Muslim women can get a divorce. I learned how hard it is to be Muslim and Homosexual. I learned the difference between American Muslims and Muslims in their home countries. I learned alot that I didn't know and this book made me want to interview Muslim women here in Canada to hear about their lives.

Excellent guide to bring life back into focus........1998-12-03
A great how-to for assessing one's life and deciding what is important and how to bring it back into focus. I especially like the 10% solution/excercise. I am anxious to bring back my creativity and let go of some debilitating energies that keep me from having JOY in my life. This book is very easy to read and follow with meaningful exercises.
