A glimpse into the creative mind.......2006-08-18
Viewing the War of the Worlds script is a bit like getting into the creative artist's head. In this film -- so rich with symbolism -- it was a pleasure to look behind the curtain to see what exactly the author intended and how this was translated into film. The script has a few surprises that make reading it a delight. In the film, you get the feeling that there are several key scenes missing. The script has proved this feeling correct. Also, several key changes from the original script helped shape the mythological elements that Steven Spielberg appears to use, such as the change from using a chevy impala as the hero's car to the Ford Mustang.
But more importantly, reading the script allows you to appreciate just how rich the language is from the start, thick with humor and with human feeling.
The shooting script to the ultimate war.......2006-03-18
The shooting script of WAR OF THE WORLDS based on H.G. Wells' classic science fiction tale will also attract specialty movie-going fans, with a screenplay by Josh Friedman and David Koepp paired with a centerfold of color photos from the film. Wells's novel was a radio show, a movie, and even a rock musical: the shooting script book includes its screenplay, an introduction by screenwriter David Koepp, and more.

In Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music, a magical collection of inspirational quotes, former Grateful Dead member Mickey Hart and ethnomusicologist Fredric Lieberman explore what it is about music that gives it the power to heal, or simply to transform an everyday moment into something of spiritual importance. Over 200 VIPs such as Albert Schweitzer, Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, Woody Guthrie, and Joan Baez contribute to four different subject areas: "Music and Musicians," "Music and Society," "Music and Spirit," and "Music and the Cosmos." The oversize print makes this an easy read, and its artsy layout makes it a great gift for music lovers. Nietzsche once said, "Without music, life would be a mistake--I would only believe in a god who knew how to dance." --P. Randall Cohan
Book Description
Thirty years ago Mickey Hart started researching and gathering information on music. His studio walls eventually became covered by these powerful insights about music, resembling a glowing anaconda that had coiled itself along the walls.
Mickey Hart, along with Fred Lieberman, shares these gems from the musical treasure chest the anaconda has guarded all these years. Hart also offers his own insights about the origin and power of music and the sacred ability of music to transform the human spirit.
"Music becomes the language of God in the Ears of the believer, a new language, a secret call." - Mickey Hart

Nice Coffee Book.......2004-01-05
I really must admit that I enjoy reading Mickey Hart's works. They are very philosophical, showing how music and spirituality are connected together throughout time. In this book, he mixes his own thoughts and ideas with a variety of quotes about music and some nice clip art of music, dancing, instruments and musicians. The quotes are grouped together through chapters of related concepts, such as spirituality, the cosmos and society and span almost every source from traditional Chinese, Greek and Islamic traditions to Jerry Garcia, Ice-T, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Peter Gabriel and John Updike. Interesting figures such as Nietzsche, Tolstoy, Plato, Confucious, Einstein, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, Rumi, Mircea Eliade, Ruth Inge-Heinz, Ayatollah Khomeini, Martin Luther, Inayat Khan, Mencious, Karl Marx and many more are quoted too.
This isn't really deep reading, but it is very interesting and thought-provoking nonetheless. Every single quote will make you rethink the way you listen to music and what exactly it means to you. I think that any music fan should at least glance this book over.
A great read that unlocks the mystery called "Music".......2001-07-13
For those of us who have often contemplated the meaning and magic called "music", Mick's book will certainly unlock the mysteries and shed light on this universal power that has permeated all cultures since time began. This is an incredible compilation of insights spoken by the masters and common man who have lived, loved and graced the world with music over the centuries. A great read; simple, humorous, reflective and motivating. I recommend this book to people of all ages -- musicians and non-musicians alike. And particularly children who in their youth will benefit from understanding that music is the pulse of life, critical to the soul, and as necessary as food, water and air.
Good quote collection doesn't relate to the CD.......2000-05-25
One of my most favorite albums that I have ever listened to is Mickey Hart's CD entitled "Spirit into Sound", with its collection of nature-evoking drum and woodwind music. So when I saw that this book was available, too, I was expecting something about the music on the album and the ideas that went behind its creation. Instead I was disappointed to find instead a set of quotes about music that don't relate to the album. It is, however, a really good source of quotes about music, including some really surprising ones. If you want inspirational words concerning music, this is the place to find them.
CAPTURES THE MAGIC.......1999-12-19
It is hard to put into words how deeply music affects our spirit... and long documentary books on music don't seem to cut it, at a feeling level. This book is a choice collection of various quotes and "takes" on music and the music experience. As someone for whom playing music (and listening to others play music) is a profound part of my life.....giving me joy, keeping my energy stress-free, sharing with friends...this book is a huge validation of all the beautiful things music does for us! It's one of those books you can flip to any part of, and lift your day just by reading a page or two. Leave it out for your visiting friends! It's a great gift idea for any music lover.
an extravagant beauty of a book.......1999-12-09
this book affirms the importance of music as a part of the human spiritual journey. the remarkable preface by fredric lieberman is a deeply moving description of how he came to decide to become a professional musician, and this preface sets the tone for the book.
the book itself reminds the reader that music is a paradox; a deeply unsettling and centering artform, and not merely the background noise for our daily activities.
there are quotes here from musicians of all practices and allegiances. i keep my copy around to clean out my head when the world is too much with me.

Maze THIS.......2001-03-02
Some of these mazes are hard, some are easy, all are in color instead of boring black and white, and all of them are fun for kids who want to be smarter, better at hand-eye coordination tasks and you could even have big kids and little kids do them together. They're fun and they're stimulating.Recommended for ages 4+ to adult.Take them to the doctor, restaurant, airplane trip, church, wherever kids need to be quiet but attentive without adult intervention.
Easy and Hard, brain benders and easy ones too.......2001-03-02
Lots of great colorful mazes for ages 3-13, good for all sorts of "sit down and be quiet" situations where kids need to be able to work alone without adult intervention. These are slightly easier than the first two volumes of the set, but just as much fun, just as attractive, just as intellectually challenging. Mazes are one the sure-fire ways to increase your kid's attention span (fie on ADD and ADHD excuses), impulse control, ability to carry a task to completion and (yikes) maybe even their intelligence! Best of all, nobody gives you a grade on these things!!!Most maze books are boring, black and white and either too easy or too hard. These are all in color, all are fun, all are challenging (but suitable for ages 3-13) Good for airplanes, sitting in airports, doctors offices, or even at church.
Great mazes for kids and grownups.......2001-03-02
Most maze books are boring, black and white and either too easy or too hard. These are all in color, all are fun, all are challenging (but suitable for ages 3-13) and best of all, doing these mazes will increase your kid's logic skills, hand-eye coordination and (eek) make them smarter! Good for airplanes, sitting in airport, doctors offices, or even at church. I don't hink they're suitable for car trips unless you have a Rolls Royce because kids would get really frustrated by going out of the maze tracks with the jiggling of the car.

We Love Freddy!.......2005-12-02
We love the Ready, Freddy books. I began reading the series to my son when he was 5. He's 6 now and can read a good portion of them independently. In King of Show and Tell, Freddy, as usual, gets himself into a few tight spots but manages to weasel his way out as only Freddy can. The illustrations (at least one per chapter)all have a hidden word to hunt for. My son (and I) wanted to read the whole book in one sitting!
the king of show and tell.......2005-11-06
i really enjoyed this book. the book is full of events that happen to freddy that will keep you wanting to read more and more. and the object that freddy brings to show and tell is completely unforgettable. i can't wait to read more of the freddy books.
Great 'Boy Orientated' book.......2004-10-29
Boys doing boy things! Compared to the number of 'girl orientated books,' there are few geared towards boys in the lower grade levels which really relate to them. I was thrilled when I saw this book and my son has enjoyed it so much that we are going to get the whole series! He laughs and really relates to the characters - and actually looks forward to being able to read them himself! For anyone wondering, when I say lower grades - I am speaking of 1st,2nd and 3rd. The reading is great, educational and full of those everyday boy things!
Book Description
"Mothers everywhere weep for lost sons, and children everywhere long for absent parents, but the families of those on death row suffer without sympathy or comfort. In Capital Consequences, King thoughtfully describes the anguish of these families as an execution date draws near and challenges the belief that creating another saddened and grieving family is a legitimate consequence of the death penalty."Robin M. Maher, Esq., director, American Bar Association Death Penalty Representation Project
"There are few, if any, books like the one Ms. King has written. I hope that people will not turn away from the hardness of these accounts, but will take them in and respond accordingly."Richard C. Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center
Those who support capital punishment often claim that they do so because it provides justice and closure for the victims' families. In Capital Consequences, attorney Rachel King reminds us that there are other families and other victims who are excluded from the death penalty debate, and who should be considered.
Combining a narrative voice with vivid, passionate, and painful accounts of the families of death row inmates, the book describes how crimes that lead to death sentences also devastate the families of those convicted. These families, King argues, are the unseen victims of capital punishment.
King challenges readers to question the morality of a punishment that victimizes families of the condemned, having a ripple effect, through future generations. She tells the stories of families that have lost life savings supporting an accused loved one, endured intense public scrutiny, been subjected to harassment by the media, and are struggling to live with the inhumane treatment that their loved ones receive on death row. The author also explores the unique nature of the grief that these families suffer. Because their pain tends to attract less attention and empathy than that of the crime victims' families, King shows how it becomes much more desperate and isolating.
On a human level, this book is a powerful reminder that tragic events have tragic consequences that far outreach their immediate victims. At the same time, the accounts illustrate many of the flaws inherent in the judicial systemracial and economic bias, incompetent counsel, prosecutorial misconduct, the execution of juveniles, and wrongful convictions, some of which are only now being overturned as a result of recent advances in DNA technology.
Regardless of which side of the death penalty issue you are on, this book will lead you to pause and consider that all actscriminal and retributivehave broader human implications than we are sometimes willing to realize.
Customer Reviews:
perfectly astonishing material.......2005-05-30
Rachel King's writing is compassionate and urgent. In telling the story of how these families cleave to dignity, she exposes the moral failure that is the death penalty. This book is profoundly moving and almost sickening. It makes one ashamed to be part of a society that can act so cruelly and can traumatize so many innocent people.
Voices Not Usually Heard.......2005-02-08
Rachel King has followed up her previous book with a similar theme, though with a completely different voice. Imagine the shame, ignominy, and ostracism that can come from having a family member sentenced to death and executed.
In Capital Consequences, she tells the stories of family members facing this unique victimization. As in her previous book, King allows the eloquence of the individuals to shine through in their own words.
There are unexpected nuggets in this book, and it is an important addition to the growing body of literature about the impact of the death penalty on American society.

Encouraging.......2006-06-13
This book is entitled "Let Me Tell You About my Savior; Yesterday, Today and Forever; When the King was Carpenter." That implies that through this book Maria von Trapp wants to tell about her Jesus that she serves.
I found the preface of this book to be encouraging and inspirational because she tells of the hard times she went through in her life and how her faith in the Lord kept her strong through it all.
Much of this book is just like reading out of the Bible with Maria's thoughts woven into it. She uses bits of her life experiences to explain the Christmas story and life of Christ.
There are also a few pictures of the real von Trapp family throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
This book is worth it!.......2005-02-17
Don't listen to the reviewer who said, "don't bother" to read this book. I have read this book in addition to the book that she says is better, and I found them both interesting. She mentions that the other book interviews the same people. Well, the other book is about women in racing and interviews women in a wide variety of jobs within the racing business from the backside to the offices.
This book, however, concentrates soley on the female jockeys. If you're a girl who dreams of being a jockey, this book is a must read for you. For anyone else, it is interesting to see how different women broke into the sport and their different personalities, from the tomboyish jockeys to the ones a little more in touch with their 'girly' side. All of them go out there and ride sucessfully and don't compromise their own style.
Julie Krone isn't the only successful female jockey, and this book introduces you to some other female jocks. They may be riding at a track near you, so get this book, then go out to the races and root for one of the girl jocks. Don't forget that horse racing is the only sport (that I can think of) where women compete directly against men on an equal basis.
a wonderful book for anyone who love horses and horse racing.......1999-09-28
This book is an inspiration for all young girls who have ever wanted to have a career that would be horse related. All of the biographies of the ladies listed here show the determination needed to make a living in a sport that is very exciting, but also demanding and frustrating.

Customer Reviews:
Mia may be a princess, but she doesn't have to like it . . ........2004-08-18
Though I am definitely several years past teenage-hood myself, I still like to read the occasional young-adult book, if for no other reason than to think back a few years when life problems were a lot more fun.
I picked up this edition, which combines both the first and second books of _The Princess Diaries_ series, last night for a bit of light reading and managed to finish the entire thing (400 some-odd pages) in less than a day. It's been ages since I've wanted to do that with a book. Both books were easy to read and extremely fun.
Mia Thermopolis is an average teenage girl. That is, until her dad shows up to tell her that she's next in line, after him, to rule a small European country. Things start happening pretty quickly after that as Mia comes to terms with who she is and how a Princess is supposed to act (thanks to on-going Princess Lessons with her Grandmere, the dowager Princess).
All of the characters, from Mia's austere Grandmere, to her slightly flaky Mom and over-the top best friend Lilly are well-drawn, believable and even likeable (each in different ways, of course). A good book can be based on one very strong character, but in my opinion the thing that makes a great book is an entire cast of wonderful characters. You will definitely find those within the pages of these books.
What really made me love both of the books so much, though, (even more than just a great cast of characters) was the humor. Ms. Cabot's writing is light and fresh and just what I've been needing for a bit of a pick me up. More often than not I found myself laughing out loud every few pages.
I look forward to reading the next books in the series and plan to also look up Ms. Cabot's other work. You should do the same, you won't be disappointed.
