5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for the Filmmaker.......2007-03-31

If you want the absolute best book on filmmaking; this is it. Kim Adelman knows her stuff. She gives testimonials from film festival coordinators that are worth more than the price of the book if you are into submitting your films to festivals. I also really enjoyed the overview of the different types of media and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
I originally picked up this book out of frustration with some of the other titles I had purchased and was pleasantly surprised with its contents. The book is extremely dense (lots of words per page) and is well worth the cover price. I keep it by my side almost constantly--reading whenever I get a chance.
Seriously, if you want the the book you have been looking for and can't find...this is the one. I suggest getting a sleep aid because once you pick it up, you may not be able to put it back down. I refer to it constantly. It is truly informative and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-09-16

I think the criticisms on this page are reasonable, but I have found this to be a useful book:

It covers pre through marketing. I disagree with some of what she says, but I've also found it useful to return to the book as I enter each stage of production on my 4th short. It's helped to refocus me a few times.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the price........2005-12-18

This book is written in a breezy style, yet contains enough varied information about the world of short films to make it well worth the price. I liked some of the "top ten" lists, such as great shorts to see, and tips for getting great performances from actors. This is not in-depth stuff, but the value of a book like this is that you can read it quickly and be reminded of a great number of essential things otherwise forgotten...or never learned.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2005-10-27

This book is very poorly written and lacks of any useful information. I am shocked that it was ever even published. One example here: On fund raising, her suggestion is "Do a Garage Sale/Sell your stuff on ebay/lemonade stand". As a veteran filmmaker I am deeply disappointed and find some reviewers here extrememly misleading and dishonest.

2 out of 5 stars Moderately useful book.......2005-08-05

I found this book to be of limited value. There is some good techinical information on dealing with SAG and other industry stuff but I found it wildly lacking in other areas. Kim Adelman is a Producer of short films as far as I know she hasn't actually got behind the camera. So the book wasn't very good with the whole being creative part nor paticularly inspiring. She makes everything seem real expensive and a 26 man crew to make a short! Robert Rodriguez would be turning over in his grave if he were dead. I think aspiring film makers are better off reading a "Rebel without a Crew" first make few films ,learn by doing, then add this book so they can understand how a producer thinks.

5 out of 5 stars A journalist wrote this.......2006-11-25

A real honest-to-goodness journalist wrote this book. More to the point, this is a reporter who worked for the newspaper in Kurt's hometown of Aberdeen AND grew up there. That means Jeff can capture the image of Aberdeen and what it was like for Kurt growing up in the timber town like the expert he actually is. This isn't just a book. This may be part of a grand memoir defining the everyman of Aberdeen while at the same time talking about Kurt's life as a whole. And because Jeff is a journalist, the freshness of his interviews are solid and his objectivity is clear. Unlike some other biographies out there, there are no made up theories here. Recommended for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kurt Cobain Book to Date.......2006-11-09

I was waiting to buy this book until I read some reviews, then I saw a review online at the Nirvana Fan Club and decided to give it a shot. This book is written for an audience of teens and older so I wasn't expecting any new stories and was surprised that there are. There's a saddening story about Kurt's mom's reaction told by someone who was with her just after she heard about Kurt's death. There are some photos I've never seen before and pictures of two things Kurt drew, which I found most fascinating and there's an update on a memorial committee in Kurt's hometown that's trying to honor him there. The author knew Kurt when they were younger and the book says he is part of that group.

The book is a high-quality hardback and isn't dumbed down like I thought it might be. If you want to know every detail of Kurt's life, there are other books out there that do the job better (though often in error or by making things up). But if you want to know "just the facts" and learn some new stories along the way you should buy this. I was pleasantly surprised with its quality and was happy to add it to my Cobain collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Nirvana Primer..........2003-02-06

See the boy.
See See See.
He is Kurt.
Kurt Kurt Kurt.
Kurt is hurt.
Hurt Hurt Hurt.
He mistrusts the world.
Bad World.
Kurt meets Krist in high school.
Yadda Yadda Yadda...

So basically, if you're a "newbie" (i detest the word...its very negative and snooty) to Nirvana and just want the inside story without really wading through all the websites and detailed books (not to mention "die-hard" fans mocking you for not knowing the story behind "Teen Spirit"), then this book is for you. The basic story is there, told with a sort of fairy-tale wonder. Great pictures too. There are some nice excerpts from interviews, but they are pretty contradictory in the profile they construct. But overal, a very good primer for the uninitiated. Don't be ashamed for not knowing much, we all have to start somewhere. Go entertain yourselves.

    Book Description

"The power of music is unique in its ability to transform our senses," says Sal Nudo, who chronicles the music of his youth and its effect on his life in 'Nevermind: It's Only Rock of Ages (Featuring Def Leppard and Nirvana)'.

In an intelligent, humorous, and creative commentary, Nudo examines and compares the rise and fall of slick metal bands like Def Leppard against the raw, unprocessd energy of later groups like Nirvana. In so doing, Nudo reveals a slice of his high school and college life -- a time when pizza and loud music meant everything. We witness an entertaining transformation and maturation of his musical tastes, from bang-your-head music with heavy sexual innuendos to the genuine, unpolished passion of independent, alternative rock.

'Nevermind...' is a thoroughly enjoyable commentary on rock music, as well as a discussion of a young man's coming of age.

1 out of 5 stars Chock full of inaccuracies and downright lies........2004-05-30

This is an awful book, and is chock full of inaccuracies and downright lies. The hack, um, I mean "author" claimed that Nirvana and Def Leppard toured together, which is a complete lie. Cobain despised hair metal bands. He made it very known that Def Leppard was one of those bands at the top of his hit list, and he set out to dethrone the spandex-lovin', womban-demeaning mysoginists from mainstream America's listening preferences. Nirvana always toured with Alt bands that shared the same views as themselves, like STP, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Tad, Love Battery, L7, The Gits, and Beat Happening. What's more, Cobain openly professed how much he hated the way metal bands objectified women, sex, and their own "manly" machismo, and named Def Leppard in interviews, by name, as a band he couldn't stand. Cobain loved Punk and quirky bar bands; NOT former-Rock Arena hasbeens like Leppard. Why this author is attempting to draw comparisons between the two bands is beyond me. Why he was even allowed to get this published was even more puzzling, but I recently found the answer: Nudo had to fund the publishing fee himself because nobody wanted to be associated with such a lie-filled book. Nudo hasn't even met not even one member of either band! All he does is recount such "fascinating" stories as how he and his friends would listen to CDs all day until they grew bored of it! What a waste. Too bad nobody hasn't wasted Nudo yet.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable diversion!.......2002-04-13

In "Nevermind: It's Only Rock of Ages," Sal Nudo has published an engaging memoir of his life as a rock fan. He reminisces about the heyday of big hair bands in the 80s, and presents his own analysis of the cultural forces that brought about the musical revolution of the early '90s. Leppard and Nirvana are effective focal points for his narrative, as he traces their history and the intersection of their musical careers in 1992, when both groups released new albums.

Nudo's writing is strong overall, though *occasionally* choppy. And I'm still undecided about the fictitious Leppard/Nirvana concert he wrote about in the last chapter... it presents an interesting juxtaposition of the two bands, but it felt pretty unconvincing.

His memoirs in Chapters 1-6 are, however, excellent reading. The book itself is only 31 pages long, plus a 4-page forward, and I read the book easily on one Saturday morning. It was relaxing and enjoyable -- time well-spent. Some examples: His commentary in Chapter Four on the incredible popularity from '89-'91 or so of the Doors, Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd definitely hit home. Didn't we all go through that phase? Moreover, 14 years later, I'm COMPLETELY envious that Nudo saw Leppard live in concert in their 1988 heyday. (*I* had to make due with "Live in the Round -- In Your Face," recently re-released on DVD. A cool video, but it would have been SO much cooler to BE there.)

On a personal level, it was gratifying to read a work by an independent author who has taken the initiative to publish a work about his experiences as a rock fan, which were so similar to my own. I too owned Damn Yankees, Motley Crue, G'n'R, and Poison cassettes and, like him, felt embarrassed by their existence in my collection when the mid-90s rolled around.

Of course, as Nudo notes, the 80's are back in style, and so are our music collections! Therefore, if you were a child of the 80s, remember MTV as a station that actually played music videos, and were still an active music fan when Nirvana changed everything, this is the book for you. And if you're a young adult who enjoys 80s music even though it predates you, then you'll enjoy the context with which this book provides you.

    Happy reading!

4 out of 5 stars Not owning this book is like pooping your pants........2000-10-29

In regards to the last review- Anyone interested in books about arms should check out 'The Arm Show' by Jim Hooper. It's a touching coming of age novel about a young man and his arm. No he doesn't play drums or lose his arm, he... well, I don't want to give away the story, just read it and find out for yourself. Also, if you're a rock fan you might like the band Mudhoney, they're singer's name is Mark Arm, and they even knew Nirvana I think. Oh by the way, if you're a fan of Nudo's work, be sure to check out a short film he made called 'Night of the Living Bread'. It's very funny.

1 out of 5 stars Straight From The Mouth ............2000-09-28

Anyone who can beat the hell out of his wife with one arm deserves a book about them. Um... this isn't the one. THERE ARE VERY FEW mentions of Ric Allen's only havign one arm! That is the ONLY reason anyone ever listened to Def Leppard in the first place. One arm! At least he could have gotten a phony one! I have to be one of three people in the world who own this book. Actually I gave mine away. Actually I made a paper mache arm out of it and sent it to Ric Allen. I have YET to see him wear it. THAT is why I stopped listening to Def Leppard.

1 out of 5 stars Love Letters To Yourself.......2000-01-06

Kurt Cobain is rudely referred to many times in this book and the references to him are insulting. I only saw this book because some guys is passing the book (and the address of THIS feature on Amazon.com) around amongst our circle of friends. Even though I paid nothing for it, it was a terrifyingly tedious read. Nirvana fans steer clear.

This is an excellent book on Nirvana, and it is too sad that it is out-of-print. It contains important interviews and write-ups from several pop culture mags of that era on the band--on performances--on their overall views...

Does this signal that Kurt was right: Grunge is dead?

Well, perhaps dead but not yet interred into the earth.

    5 out of 5 stars A Pretty cool book.......2000-09-04

It tells alittle bit about the history of Nirvana but its mostly about the making of Nevermind and about the songs. Its pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2000-05-27

Yeah, yeah, it's really lame to buy a book about them and all, but this isn't just another stupid ripoff fan book- this is really good stuff. It's funny. It's sad. It gives Courtney a chance to look less evil- I changed my mind about her because of this book. And it's not just about Kurt like most Nirvana books are- there's a good amount of stuff on Krist and the various drummers as well. Serious Nirvana fans really need to read this.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for a true Nirvana fan.......1999-05-08

This book gives an excellent account of what led to the great CD we now know as Nevermind. It briefly describes Nirvana's rise to stardom and gives a glimpse into the personalities of the members, but is at its best in describing how the actual production of the album went. Using numerous sources, the author lets us listen to Nevermind in a completely different way. The only downside is that it is a relatively short work, and I left wanting more

4 out of 5 stars Excellent sleights, but sometimes unclear.......2007-08-22

This book is designed to teach the reader how to perform a wide variety of basic sleight-of-hand card tricks. The sleights themselves are classics; I think that knowing basic sleight of hand is fundamental for performing really impressive card magic, and this book contains all of the groundwork you will need. The book includes information on the overhand shuffle, the riffle shuffle, the glimpse, the palm, the double lift, the pass, and much more.

The explanations of the sleights are quite detailed. This allows the reader to pick up fine points and refine the techniques.

That said, I think this book has some important deficiencies. (1) Many of the moves are not illustrated at all. It's very difficult to learn some sleight of hand moves with just a verbal description. More pictures would be tremendously helpful. (2) While the book contains many great tricks, especially towards the end, it also includes a number of dull ones. I personally hate any card trick that involves spelling (i.e., you count cards out as you spell some word, and the last card counted out is the chosen one), and this book includes plenty of those. Still, if you select tricks carefully from the book, you will end up with some astonishing routines.

One warning, though: sleight-of-hand magic requires a LOT of practice. If you're interested in picking up a new magic trick in five minutes, this is not the book for you! If, however, you would like to learn really deceptive card tricks - tricks that the average spectator will really be stunned by - and you are willing to devote time to daily practice, then this book is a fine option.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised to find this got only 4.5 stars.......2007-03-30

This is a truly wonderful book. I can't think of a better one for Card magic. It explains the different sleights, and has excellent routines to use them. It does assume one has a basic understanding of Card magic, so I suppose someone starting out who has no background could find it frustrating. It's not the best book for a rank beginner, but for someone who has some knowledge of the basics, I think it's terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Old but not outdated.......2007-02-02

This is the best book to start in card magic. Small, easy to follow, full of information. After you read this book, you will be able to understand the description of most tricks to learn, and also, you will surprise yourself figuring out tricks just to look at someone performing it. If you want to be a professional magician (not my case at all) you'll have to read a lot more, but, this book will be always a good reference.

I recommend after finishing reading RRTCM, move to Expert Card Technique written by the same authors.

4 out of 5 stars Card handling is not easy...........2007-01-10

This book is great for learning different card handling and shuffling techniques, however it can be a little tuff to follow sometimes. If you dont already have a basic understanding of how to handle cards you might want to start with a video first. It's usually a bit easier to learn when you can actually see whats going on. A side from all that, this is a really good book.

            5 out of 5 stars RRTCM.......2006-09-30

The book itself is excellent, though, I saw a review that was a bit mistaken. It said to get the DVD set instead... which is partially incorrect. If you're truly interested in learning and perfecting, get _both_. The DVD set corrects some of the mistakes in the book, as well as offers different, more effective methods of some of the tricks.

The book is surely one of the classics in magic, and I'll have mine until the day I die. It's _well_ worth the purchase... and you might consider getting the 5-disc DVD with it. (Not all tricks in the book are covered on the DVD).

                          Book Description

Lengthy biographies are provided for 28 of the most prominent trendsetting morning men, including Gene Rayburn, "Buffalo" Bob Smith, Wolfman Jack, Don Imus, and Howard Stern. The focus is on their careers and their contributions to radio. These are followed by brief biographies of over 200 lesser known morning personalities.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2003-11-13

I disagree with the other previous review. This book does a great job of covering the wealth of radio air personalities from the 1920's to the 1990's. More well known broadcasters get more in-depth analysis. Overall, this is a wonderful reference work and a must have for any serious radio history enthusiast.

2 out of 5 stars For Radio History Buffs Only!.......1998-04-06

Having spent more than 25 years in radio, a good portion of it behind the microphone, I was sorely disappointed by Mr. Lieberman's book. An Englishman, Mr. Lieberman has no experience in radio, other than as a listener. That hardly provides the qualities needed to provide indepth, insightful observation to the mania in the mornings practiced by radio stations all across the country. The taut one line to short paragraph descriptions fail to do justice to the men and women who "cranked up the sun and kicked the rooster" for radio listeners each morning. Perhaps the most grievious of errors is the fact that West Coast personalities get the short shrift in Mr. Lieberman's book. Unless you're a die hard radio history book collector or someone who doesn't mind throwing away $30 on this book, I'd recommend that your money is better spend on other books covering the subject.
