This book is packed with tons of useful information. We consider ourselves somewhat expererienced documentary film-makers, but it's given us a lot of valuable information we didn't alreadly know, and didn't know who to ask.
Good Information, But Filled with Typos.......2006-12-24
This book is full of great information, but there are many places in the text where there appears to be missing text. e.g. pages 51, 57, 59 where there are little boxes that appear in the middle of sentences & break up the text, sometimes with returns that leave one word on a line. Curious.
So much more than another "how to" book.......2006-11-21
Though this book has plenty of useful resources from writing to funding to filming to distributing your film, what really sets it apart from the rest are the short interviews throughout the book with people from all sections of the industry--not just directors! They generally start off with a simple question--What do you do?--and then quickly gets down to brass tacks and inside dope. It's fascinating stuff...engaging reading isn't exactly what one expects from a "handbook" but they've done it right.

If you are truly interested in becoming a documentary filmmaker then this is the book for you, whether you are just starting or already well on your way. I found the interviews in the book to be the most helpful and informative. Thanks for putting together such a functional and important guide!

Save your money.......2007-06-08
Don't be fooled by the title. There is precious little in this book that will be of use for the no budget independent filmmaker. If you want a truly useful and comprehensive guide on low budget independent moviemaking then I recommend "Digital Filmmaking 101" by Dale Newton and John Gaspard. The Guerilla Film Makers Handbook will be worthless to you unless you have a budget of a million dollars or more. Skip it.

first,let me mention that the book takes a great approach in giving you the facts. this is the book i've been searching for.
THIS IS NOT A GUERILLA FILM BOOK WHERE IT TEACHES YOU HOW TO SHOOT A FILM FOR $50 AND AvOIDING GETTING ARRESTED. if u want to shoot a film that way than obviously u r not prepared to shoot a good film and your script probably stinks.
If you want to get advice from people who were recently in your shoes and are now working in the industry as professionals than BUY THIS. a lot of very important things are brought up.
DEVELOPMENT, FINANCING, PRODUCTION, POST, AND DISTRIBUTION are all well explained. especially the legal aspects of things.
You want investors, well you first need to know who to handle the whole PPM manner so that you dont get sued. These types of books are all i read.
If you want to produce than read: this book+"from reel to deal"
Directing: "Directing actors"+ buy the 6 dvd set of HOLLYWOOD
CAMERA WORK which is $480 but worth every penny trust me.
If you want to write then you must buy "STORY" by robert mckee and learn how to format form any other book.
I did my homework so listem to me and stay away from film schools. they are thieves and you will come out dissapointed. read my other reviews. ONLY LISTEN TO THE INDUSTRY PROS and POSITIVE PEOPLE. EVERYONE ELSE IS FULL OF CRAP AND FILM SCHOOLS LOVE TO DISCOURAGE STUDENTS CAUse they know all 500,000 students they get every year arent going to make it. lots of info,but title is a bit misleading.......2005-01-01
i read the other reveiws on this book and bought it. then returned it. it is packed full of all kinds of great information from industry experts, which is great, but i was looking for a book on filmaking for rebel independent film makers. It seems to be written for people with LOTS of money. which i don't have. in their defense the title does not say anything about independent, which is what i assumed. when i think of guerilla i think of rebels. this book is a bit out of my league.

This book is AWESOME! It covers everything you need to know to start out making a movie. The interviews are with working professionals, the majority of whom started out on guerilla films and who talk about the differences between the low budget guerilla movies and the big Hollywood blockbusters that many work on today. And peppered within the interviews are these helpful hints that give the low budget/guerilla tips on how to save money and play with the big boys when you have no money. I found this invaluable as I know I'm getting my advice and tips from the experts who have made it and not unknown filmmakers who can't move on from the doldrums of guerilla films. After having read this book I feel like I've sat down and had meetings with all of these experts and boy! do I feel informed! I'm a filmmaker who has to start out guerilla style but hope to move out of the guerilla world and into the professional world. This book gives me a guide and the inspiration. Sure it might not be easy but at least now I'm armed with everything I should know! As with all serious filmmakers, you have to actually go out there and make a movie which is obviously what the book can't do for you but it can certainly lead you in the right direction and tell you what you're up against. None of the other books out there seem to compare with this one. Thank you!!!!

OK but too UK oriented.......2004-11-11
Though I found many aspects of this book helpful, I thought the book was too Oriented towards Filmmakers in the UK where much of their filmmaking industry is government subsidized. An aspring filmmaker in the US will not find many parts of this book useful (film lottery, and UK legal system). But the parts that are generic to all filmmakers are what makes the book worth buying.
I have discovered that the authors have recently published a US version of this book. For American filmmakers, I recommend that book instead of this UK version. Though there are some aspects that will be universal to all filmmakers, there are still huge chunks of the UK version that simply is not applicable to us Americans.
A very good guide to film making.......2003-10-12
Basically this book is a three part book. The start of the book goes into the film making process, what it is about, why bother and how to get started. It gives you a general air of what is going on before a film starts shooting.
The middle part of the book is extremely technically useful. Don't be put-off by the fact that it is a British book, most of the standards are the same and the writer covers both US systems and UK systems. Anyway the value of this book is in that the writer interviews very important people that work in the filming process - actors, special effects, film lab, cameramen, editors, sound editors, legal agencies, projectionists, marketing people, producers, directors... etc.... and they all give very profesional tips on what you should do and what you should NOT do.
The third part of the book deals with CASE STUDIES and various filmmakers talk about their projects and what went right and what went wrong (My copy of the book is actually missing pages here. It looks like the printer left out about 30 pages and replaced these with pages that where already printed a few pages back before).
Overall this is a very good book with lots of information from the people that matter in this industry. There is a lot of information on what NOT to do when shooting your first film. Anybody who wants to get into to film making should not miss out on this writer/director's account of his experiences with film making. It is worth every penny, even though my book did have misprints.
Lots of Information but too UK centric for me........2001-09-10
I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer that this is a PACKED volume of information. There is definitely a lot of information here.
Importantly, especially for the novice filmmaker, it is written in accessible language and with many photos/pictures to help illustrate points.
The format is not very "handbook"-like however. It's not set up with the ability to refer to a particular section and instantly find information. The format is actually INTERVIEWS with various people. That makes this an easy read but not really something I'd call a "handbook".
Also, where I tend to back off with my usefulness of this book - it is written with a very distinctive UK (Great Britian) slant. Most (though not all) of the interviews are with UK resident filmmakers, professionals and film business people. I found a lot of the information to be TOO MUCH about making films in the UK, and not generic enough for US application.
UK filmmakers or filmmaker hopefuls will find more in this book to relate to thier field than will a US filmmaker. BUT - again, even for those in the UK, the INTERVIEW format isn't very user-friendly. It's like reading a very long magazine interview with various film professionals.
Please note, also, that the featured CD contains .txt and .doc (MS Word) examples which are written for the UK (ie. they indicate "Engligh Court" and the money amounts are pounds). I'm not sure what it would take to make them US friendly, but thought I should mention this.
I wish everyone the best of luck in making their own film, that's a dream of mine and I encourage you to read as much information about filmmaking as you can, however - this would not be a book I'd suggest as your only reference, or for use as a "handbook".
I will note that, specifically, the charts and illustrations of various equipment were very helpful.

At every stage experts - from casting agents to lawyers- drop in to offer advice. There are also loads of film case studdies including Lynne Ramsey's "Ratcatcher", Richard Stanley's "The Island of Dr. Moreau and the inevitable "Blair Witch Project". And if that's not enough for you, you also get a free toolkit CD-ROM which handily contains all the contract forms and documents you'll ever need, as well as some free screenwriting software. Buy this book! Don't borrow it! It's as good as it gets.

Decent book, but very basic.......2007-08-07
this is a book about limit poker for a beginner. Not for the advanced player as the front of the book reads. But if you are a beginner, it seems like it should do a decent job at teaching. I was disappointed, but I've been playing foraa couple of years.

I bought this book for my boyfriend in Jan. He had been getting in to playing poker and wanted to learn more about Texas Hold Em. I checked out other books on Amazon, but decided to go w/ this one. Good thing I did because he LOVED it. He even looked over some other books in the store and said this was the one he would have chosen for himself.
Great book for learning how to analyze cards.......2007-01-20
This was one of the first poker books I got, and its layout was a great help. It starts with some basic principles, then jumps headfirst into 150 different scenarios, where you're asked how to play it further. Purdy provides the full odds and play situation, then his detailed answer on how you could play it, what could happen, and how he'd play it. It helped me greatly with understanding the strength of pocket cards and reading the board, plus analyzing what pocket hands would beat my made hands.
That said, the book's biggest weakness is the promotion of very tight play, plus an emphasis on using your cards as the sole determinant of whether or not to play hands. Strong pocket hands are rare, and players who put this to practice in real tournaments often will watch their stacks slowly disappear and get blinded off, going out of tournaments with a whimper. You will rarely see hands strong enough to play, and when you do, there is no guarantee you'll have a playable hand, let alone the winning hand, once the cards hit the table. The book also doesn't emphasize enough the importance of playing position, though it does go into detail how you play different based on chip counts. However, the book's scenarios often have you playing with a chip lead: obviously, as a beginner, you're not going to be in such a situation very often.
It's great for beginners picking up basic principles on pocket and hand analysis, plus elements of situational tournament play. Once you master its principles, though, you'll want to move up and read more advanced materials. Recommendations are all over the internet. However, I would suggest reading this before reading the convoluted strategy manuals that are popular today.
A good 2nd book on THE - Useful despite errors.......2006-12-04
This book contains a systematic error in its crucial table of opening hand strength on page 24-25. (It purports to give the odds a given hand has of winning when up against one other hand, but its numbers are too low for all hands but AA; the weighted average win rate should be 50%, but more than half the hands are showing win rates of less than 5%.) And there are better sources for systematic starting hand strength, generally using Slansky-style Groups 1 through 8 -- buy one of those first.
But I learned a lot from many of the situations in this book; most of the time where the book disagreed with my initial perception, the book convinced me with its logic. But sometimes Purdy missed something (in situation #146, your best hope is actually to get a fourth 3 on the turn or river, giving you the nut hand with your Ace kicker). And sometimes he made an error in drawing odds (and yes, I know that, say, 20% = 1/5 = 4-to-1); in the same situation the odds of getting an A or 10 on the turn alone are are 6.8-to-1 (not 11-to-1 as stated) and the odds of A, T or 3 are 5.7 to 1. (7 outs, for 40-to-7).
You have pot odds to call because there are probably no face-card pocket pairs (there was no raising pre-flop) and the odds are only 12/47 that anyone still in holds a 3 (6 callers saw the flop), and probably less than that since 3 is not a power card (it had more than average odds of being folded, except perhaps if it happened to be held as A3s). With pot odds you should at least call, not fold.
Low limit player, on the right track.......2006-11-10
I have been playing twice a week for a year now at a 4-8 game. Usual win rate of about 8 out of 10 sessions. This book helped to reinforce I was playing right most of the time and pointed out where I had some holes. I'd recommend for the average low limit player who thinks they are on the right track.

Usable resource.......2004-06-03
I am the behavior intervention coordinator for a coop that serves several school districts. This book provides a good usable overview, in common language, to some thechnically sound nonaversive bahavioral intervention strategies. I particularly recomend this book to classroom teachers and other direct service providers. For consultants and psychologists or other specialists doing more detailed assessments and support plans and want a more complete discussion I would recommend "Alternatives to Punishment" by the same authors. It generally covers the same material with more depth and technical language.
A useful, usable guide.......2001-05-29
I found Progress Without Punishment to be a useful, usable guide to behavioral strategies in the classroom. My copy is nearly worn out from frequent use. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a guide to implementation of positive reinforcement in the classroom.
