Book Description

Stop the Show! is the first book to assemble humorous, frightening and bizarre anecdotes about the history of all that went wrong during live theatrical productions in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. It is the publishing equivalent of TV bloopers for the legitimate stage.

This book includes stories from top directors, actors, playwrights and technicians from New York, Los Angeles, and points in between, to the United Kingdom, from the 19th century to today.

There are stories about missed entrances and exits, onstage unscripted fights between performers, improvised lines, accidental pratfalls, falling scenery, and costume, lighting and makeup screwups. The backstage provides sordid tales of practical jokes, treachery, misplaced props, wild arguments, and generally the kinds of things Michael Frayn created for his farce about a theatrical disaster, Noises Off.

This book doesn't leave out the theatergoers either, who snore, fight with each other, talk back to the performers, search for their seats, become suddenly ill, eat, drink, make merry, and are yelled at by the performers — all of which sometimes prompts the show to stop, even though we’ve always been told it must go on.

5 out of 5 stars Stop the show for a good laugh!.......2007-01-11

A funny and fascinating look at just how wrong things can go onstage. A must-read for anybody with an interest in theater or acting -- or just having some yuks at the expense of master and not-so-masterful thespians. Should be handed out as required reading for those who dare to tread the boards wearing less than full body armor.

"Stop the Show" is a great read not only for theatre buffs, but for anyone looking for a good laugh and a glimpse behind the curtain. It overflows with Schreiber's wry anecdotes, and the theatrical mishaps he skilfully chronicles leave an indelible impression.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed Till I Peed My Pants.......2006-12-13

Brad Schreiber's the funniest man I know. So funny, that if he'd been up on that Laugh Factory stage instead of Michael Richards, he would've KILLED using the same bit. Don't believe me? Read his latest tome Stop the Show, which is chock full of tales of pre-KKKramer stage f-ups. There's the one about the homeless woman onstage during Cats, the Second City performer dropping acid, and Richard Burton pissing his breeches during a Shakespearean swordfight. That last one literally had me laughing so hard I piddled my own BVDs. Very embarassing. But then, maybe I shouldn't drink so much beer at one sitting. In any case, I'm sending Schreiber the laundry bill.

4 out of 5 stars A bunch of great laughs.......2006-09-19

This is a delightful collection of theater anecdotes and real-life stage bloopers. The stories are both amusing and interesting. This book is perfect for cocktail chatter and bor bedtime reading, guaranteeing a chuckle, a smile, and a guffaw before dining, or before sleeping.

Try not to shake the bed from laughing while you read this one at night! This hilarious collection of theatrical gaffes, mishaps and goof-ups is good old-fashioned fun! It makes a great gift, too - 'cause whether you're in the theater or not, we all screw up!

Book Description

In 1953, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot premiered at a tiny avant-garde theatre in Paris; within five years, it had been translated into more than twenty languages and seen by more than a million spectators. Its startling popularity marked the emergence of a new type of theatre whose proponents—Beckett, Ionesco, Genet, Pinter, and others—shattered dramatic conventions and paid scant attention to psychological realism, while highlighting their characters’ inability to understand one another. In 1961, Martin Esslin gave a name to the phenomenon in his groundbreaking study of these playwrights who dramatized the absurdity at the core of the human condition.

Over four decades after its initial publication, Esslin’s landmark book has lost none of its freshness. The questions these dramatists raise about the struggle for meaning in a purposeless world are still as incisive and necessary today as they were when Beckett’s tramps first waited beneath a dying tree on a lonely country road for a mysterious benefactor who would never show. Authoritative, engaging, and eminently readable, The Theatre of the Absurd is nothing short of a classic: vital reading for anyone with an interest in the theatre.

5 out of 5 stars None Finer.......2000-10-13

If you have ever wished for one book to neatly package absurdist theatre, Mr. Esslin's book is the one. This book is readable, comprehendable, entertaining and engaging. In fact, it's rather difficult to put down. His introduction does wonders to dispel any myths as to what absurdist theatre is and isn't. He follows the introduction by individually highlighting those playwrights often associated with the absurd (Beckett, Adamov, Ionesco, Genet, and Pinter). Of interest is the fact that he does not overwhelm or bore the reader by providing an excess of information. On the contrary, each section is unbelievably tight. His section on Adamov is much appreciated, considering that finding anything on him is near impossible. He then continues with his "Parallels and Proselytes" in which he touches on "lesser-known" playwrights (Albee, Arrabal, and others). He follows this section with three more equally fascinating chapters. In short, Mr. Esslin packs a breadth of relevant information into 480 pages. "The Theatre of the Absurd" should find a welcome home on the bookshelves of actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, or those with an interest in theatre. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars a must read for the theatre teacher........2000-07-20

Esslin outlines important facts about this complicated and confusing theatrical movement. He helps provide a basic understanding for anyone who would like to know about Beckett, Ionesco, Adamov, Genet, and Pinter. Absurdism is probably the least understood of all modern theatrical movements of the twentieth century, but Esslin makes it accessible. If you study, teach, design,or perform in the theatre you need to read this book, it is the authoritative text on absurdist theatre.

5 out of 5 stars A classic on the history of theatre and thought.......2000-05-03

I came to read this book for a paper I decided to write on Samuel Beckett, for my Theory of History course. A friend who's an actress recommended it for me, and it was an amazing discovery. From an historian's point of view, this book is a rich, challenging and informative approach to one of the most important aspects of the ideology crisis from the beginning of the XXth. Century. As I came to know later, it's a classic on the theatre field as well.

Apart from Beckett and some minor authors, there are chapters on Adamov, Ionescu, Genet and Pinter, and a superb essay on the meaning of the concept of "absurd" of human existence. A must read for anyone who wishes to understand not only the art, but the ideas which shaped the latest century.

Aristophanes, the Athenian comic dramatist, remains popular despite historical changes in attitude and belief. Placing the plays in their total civic, religious and dramatic context, this account explores their significance for contemporary audiences, and their continuing appeal. Separate chapters address aspects of his work and world, and attempt to outline the playwright's own opinions at a time of intense political debate. With original texts quoted in translation this comprehensive and lively study will provide students with an invaluable insight into the plays and their place in classical Athens.

                Book Description

This book is a comprehensive study of Peer Gynt, a drama that forms the foundation of not only the entire Ibsen canon but also modern drama as a whole. It provides scene-by-scene commentary on the drama, showing how the literature and ideas of the drama resemble, and sometimes duplicate, the literature and philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard. It is the first such study since Henri Logeman's commentary on the drama published in 1917. Although the main focus of the book is Ibsen's drama, Bruce Shapiro's study provides some substantial insights into Kierkegaard. He demonstrates how Ibsen's poem was influenced by Kierkegaard's philosophy and literature. One of the most perplexing questions about Peer Gynt is how the ending of the drama functions as a resolution to the whole. This study formulates an understanding, based upon Kierkegaardian philosophy, that accounts for this scene. Moreover, the revelation of Kierkegaard's influence on Ibsen allows the contemporary reader to experience the essence of the drama within the same intellectual context in which it made its first literary appearance. When Kierkegaard's philosophy is artistically brought back into existence through a reader's experience of Peer Gynt, it is as if that reader is a contemporary of those very thoughts. With Kierkegaardian philosophy as the common horizon of understanding, Peer Gynt may be perceived as a complete and unified drama from its beginning to its conclusion. Shapiro's book is the first comprehensive study of Peer Gynt to be published. It may also be the first study to demonstrate one way in which the entire Kierkegaardian dialetic was understood during the philosopher's lifetime. This unique work will be a valuable book for scholars and students of drama, Scandinavian studies, modern philosophy, and existentialism.

4 out of 5 stars Easy entertainment .......2006-10-12

I got this book at Graceland when it was a new item back in 1995, and I was previously unaware of its existence. Of course, I knew that the two had met, as one of those bizarre connections of wildly different people. I couldn't pass it by as a souvenir, rather than all the cheesy alternatives. The book is entertaining, with a casual, chatty approach so different from typical works that involve politicians.

The classic, well-known photo of Nixon and Elvis is there, with several other informal shots. Mr. Krogh has included plenty of amusing details, such as Elvis' letter to Nixon on an airline notepad and Elvis rummaging through Nixon's desk looking for mementos for his pals. I don't think additional content would really have added much, as Mr. Krogh included enough for readers to get the picture.

After the meeting, the story moves to lunch in the cafeteria with folks used to political superstars thrilled by the appearance of a *real* superstar, and the arrival of the coveted official federal narcotics badge, per Nixon's order. The badge was at Graceland in my visit, and the whole adventure leaves me both amused and somewhat befuddled. What was Elvis thinking, anyway? Elvis certainly didn't take Nixon's advice to Elvis, which included, "just be sure you keep your credibility."

                  3 out of 5 stars Undistinguished .......2006-01-08

*The Day Elvis Met Nixon* is Egil Krogh's first-person account of the day (Dec. 21, 1970) Elvis Presley dropped into the White House, met President Nixon, offered his services in the Administration's war against drug - he could talk to the young people - and posed with the President for what has become one of the most popular photographs in the national archives.

Published in 1994, nearly a quarter century after the event, Krogh's recollection lacks the sharp details of a more immediate event. In 1970 Krogh was a deputy counsel to the President, responsibilities including developing a drug policy. Which is how Presley's letter of introduction - he wanted to be a `Federal Agent at Large' in the drug war - came to Krogh's desk. Attractively laid out and so richly illustrated - behold the gift Elvis brought the day he met Nixon, all six pages of the letter hand-written on American Airlines stationary, the Special Agent badge Elvis coveted and asked for the day he met Nixon - that the text suffers in comparison. It's a quick read, a half-hour or so at a leisurely pace, easily digested and vaguely dissatisfying. Twenty-five years do tend to blunt and dull even the sharpest of memories.

In any event the piece de resistance is White House photographer Ollie Atkin's famous photo, hereafter referred to as The Picture. Everyone has seen it, no? Nixon and Elvis, hereafter referred to as the King, standing side by side directly in front of five flags. They're facing the camera, shaking hands. Nixon is in a gray business suit, a politician's pseudo-smile on his face. He looks like someone responding to a joke he doesn't get. The King stands beside him, already somewhat puffed and bloated. There's a heavy gold chain around his neck and about twenty pounds worth of gold on the biggest belt buckle you'll ever see around his waist. The King wears a dark suit over a white shirt, unbuttoned with big collars. If Nixon looks grimly jovial, the King simply looks toked. Both seem oblivious to the angry ghosts already gathering, the karmic debt collectors who would, in a few short years, leave the King to drown in his own suet and Nixon to resign in disgrace, delivering a humiliation - finally - large enough for a politician with an otherwise insatiable appetite for self-abasement.

Which brings me to why I bought this book. I have a modest collection of Watergate related books in my possession. Egil Krogh is the person who authorized the break-in of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Ellsberg is the person who leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, causing an uproar in the Nixon Administration. After the publication and prior to Ellsberg's trial the Nixon White House wanted whatever it could get on Ellsberg, and a psychiatrist's notes on his patient seemed a good place to start. Krogh hasn't written anything else, that I'm aware of, besides this book. There may be a magazine article or two floating around. Krogh is also the one who brought G. Gordon Liddy into the White House. More to the pity *The Day Elvis Met Nixon* mentions none of this, although there's a nice book-congratulations note near the preface, written by Nixon shortly before his death, handsomely reproduced.

What you're left with, then, is something that feels an awful lot like a longish American Heritage magazine article. There's a nice, detachable, suitable for framing, color-tinted reproduction of the photograph hanging off the rear cover (in case you buy this book used, make sure the photo is intact!)

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite elvis books.......2003-04-27

this book details the day of the meeting between elvis and nixon. It is detailed but an easy reader. It is anything except boring! In the back you will find a RARE 8 by 10 color photo of the two that is worth the price in gold.

5 out of 5 stars All you conspiracy Nuts should get a dose of reality............1997-10-22

I hadn't heard any of the wierd conspiracy theories until I had this book sitting on my desk and a co-worker offered up his bizzare "facts" about this meeting. I went ahead and read it anyway, to discover that I worked with a Kook. Aside from being very entertaining, the information was simply some good things to know about a couple of men that were great in their own careers. They each have been slammed on character issues, however the facts portrayed in this book illustrate that any ridicule of character is purely the bias of the News Media.

4 out of 5 stars 30 minutes reading this book is unforgettable!.......1997-07-31

Krough's amazing eyewitness account of the day Elvis met Nixon is well worth reading. This unlikely pair got together for the most unlikely reasons. Each was looking for something to gain. Each seemed satisfied with the result. The story adds to the well-deserved mystique of each of these unique characters. The book, while no literary masterpiece (and not pretending to be such), is a delightful 30-minute read that will leave you with a great story to tell at parties. I recommend it highly

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Bridge.......2006-02-17

This is a good introduction to bridge, which covers enough bidding and card play (i.e. declarer and defensive play) that you can at least get to the table and understand the basics of all facets of bridge. Needless to say, as an introduction to a complex game, it won't make you an expert, but that's not its goal. My only objection to this book is that a feature of its bidding system is outdated (it treats raises to the three level as game-forcing instead of limit-raises).

For an introduction without outdatedness, there is Eddie Kantar's "Bridge for Dummies". The disadvantages to Kantar's book are that it's a bit longwinded, and that it does not contain quizzes to help reinforce understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for new players.......1999-02-28

I've always thought William Root's books were very good, so I was glad to see his new offering. I'll be using in a small class for beginning players. It is so important to get new players off on the right foot, and it is far too easy to scare them away with too many gadgets or an unreadable book. The system the book teaches is a fairly standard modern system, although my opinion is that limit raises in majors should now be viewed as standard (the book mentions limit raises, but advises people to begin with forcing raises). That's a pretty small and debatable issue in an otherwise excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as other David J. Howe books.......2007-03-24

I agree with the previous reviewer who states that this is the most inferior of the David J. Howe series of reference books. The selection of photos are less than inspiring and much smaller than the ones in the previous books, and provide less visual enjoyment. It's not as easy a read either because the print is finer too. The breakdown of chapters is as follows: The more popular monsters and ones which overlap the classic series decades, such as the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, and Ice Warriors, get their own chapter, while all the other monsters get categorized into three different chapters titled The Sixties, The Seventies, and The Eighties. Howe describes each monster as to the context of their respective stories, interviews creators and actors, and adds his own two-cents worth, a practice he avoids in his other two books.

Due to "time and space constraints", as he puts it not every monster is featured in the main part of the book. He claims to have omitted from the main chapters "humanoid" type monsters like the Primords from Inferno, but curiously includes the Draconians, the Voords, etc. However, perhaps the saving grace of this book is an index of every monster in the classic series (even the "humanoid" ones) and characters you normally would not think of as monsters. The index is why I bumped this up to 4 stars. Without it, the book would be a 3 star effort. It includes a small picture of the monster in question with a brief description of the story in which it appears. Leafing through it, it seems like this index encompasses all the relevant monsters of the series. At least Howe was able to include everyone this way.

3 out of 5 stars Not the strongest in the series of Doctor Who Guides........2000-04-06

Monsters is probably the weakest of David J. Howe's books. After such entries as "Time Frame", "The Eighties" and "Companions" this book falls flat. I didn't feel there was alot of information given about the monsters and the pictures chosen were less than tantilizing for me to enjoy it as a whole. Whereas his previous books which were filled with gorgeous pictures and tid bits of obscure information that keeps you interested thoughout the whole book. This one however gives me the feeling, "Ho Hum, that was nice." after I'm through reading it. It seems like this book was published in a hurry just to get another Doctor Who book on the shelves. It seems like every aspect of Doctor Who has been run dry and now they're just grasping for ideas. I certainly hope that this is not the case because it would be a real shame for someone as insightful as David J. Howe to ends a very successful series of books like this.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive in its day, now an enjoyable curio.......2002-10-11

This was when published the definitive account of Doctor Who monsters... and just about the only catalogue of the Doctor's adventures to date (apart from the Making Of Doctor Who book). The illustrations by Chris Achilleous are excellent, some being done for the book, and others from the front cover of Target's many Doctor Who books. If you are lucky enough to have a first edition, you will also have the free poster of the cover artwork, which certainly does justice to Achilleos's designs.

The book only covers the period to the end of the Fourth Doctor's first year in the role, and can now be seen as a guide to the early years of Doctor Who monsters. It is written for children, but Dicks never patronises, and the book is a joy for adults to read too. This book could well do with an update and I am sure its simple approach would work as a complement to the rather over-researched, retentive modern day equivalents we have seen published since the mid 1980s.
