Book Description
Complete with behind-the-scenes diary entries from the set of Vachon's best-known fillms, Shooting to Kill offers all the satisfaction of an intimate memoir from the frontlines of independent filmmakins, from one of its most successful agent provocateurs -- and survivors. Hailed by the New York Times as the "godmother to the politically committed film" and by Interview as a true "auteur producer," Christine Vachon has made her name with such bold, controversial, and commercially successful films as "Poison," "Swoon," Kids," "Safe," "I Shot Andy Warhol," and "Velvet Goldmine."Over the last decade, she has become a driving force behind the most daring and strikingly original independent filmmakers-from Todd Haynes to Tom Kalin and Mary Harron-and helped put them on the map.
So what do producers do? "What don't they do?" she responds. In this savagely witty and straight-shooting guide, Vachon reveals trheguts of the filmmaking process--rom developing a script, nurturing a director's vision, getting financed, and drafting talent to holding hands, stoking egos, stretching every resource to the limit and pushing that limit. Along the way, she offers shrewd practical insights and troubleshooting tips on handling everything from hysterical actors and disgruntled teamsters to obtuse marketing executives.
Complete with behind-the-scenes diary entries from the sets of Vachon's best-known films, Shooting To Kill offers all the satisfactions of an intimate memoir from the frontlines of independent filmmaking, from one of its most successful agent provocateurs-and survivors.

Outstanding guide to producing.......2007-09-13
Christine Vachon has written an extremely accessible, entertaining book about what it means to be an independent film producer. She covers every step of the movie-making process, from finding a script to casting to hiring a crew, editing, etc. She covers the material with an engaging style and a sense of humor, and the facts are punctuated with examples and anecdotes from the movies she's produced. She's candid and unapologetic, and apparently some reviewers here have a problem with that. News flash - if you intend to make a career in the film industry, you better get used to people who yell, tight schedules, high expectations, plus low budgets if indies are your thing. If you spent any time on a film set, you would know that it is the producer's JOB to be tough, to get things in on time, and to run a tight ship. At the end of the day, it's the producer's butt that is on the line. It's just plain silly to give the book a low rating because Christine had the guts to be honest about the way things work on a film set and you wouldn't want to work with her. It's clear that some reviewers here need to get a thicker skin or find a different calling.
Christine's films have been critical success stories despite their low budgets and tight time frames - she knows what she is doing and has taken the time to write a wonderful introduction to the world of filmmaking for beginners and those of us with some experience. I highly recommend this book.
There is an Indie Neverland After All.......2005-09-20
Not only is this a thorough and informative piece of work, which would make it worth twice the price all by itself, it's also an inspiration and should be read by anyone, writer, actor, producer, director, anyone.... who's ever been told you have to compromise your vision in this business to get your movie made. There are several great stories in this book but the image that keeps resonating in my head is Christine Vachon, the High Priestess of Indie Film and Soverign Protector of Infant Directors, saying to the producer's rep: "We'll talk about it" and saying to everyone else after hanging up the phone, "We're not cutting anything, we're not cutting anything." Not only did I not know there were people out there doing such things, I had begun to wonder if it was even possible. This book can make you believe again. I didn't read it. I devoured it.
Best behind the scenes indie film book I've ever read.......2002-10-14
Having just directed a low-budget feature in Hollywood, I wish I had read this book beforehand (and I certainly wish my producer had read it). Vachon breaks down the process, making it understandable to even the most novice film fan. The writing is gutsy, the tales from the trenches always interesting. One of the must-reads if you're at all interested in making movies.
Producers aren't directors.......2002-09-24
Somewhere between the world of independant movies and studio pictures reside a group of people who've bounced between both worlds and have taken up residence in the void. The author is one of those people. This book isn't very informative for the ultra low budget producer but a good read nonetheless. Although at times it wanders aimlessly while the reader tries to figure out which of the half-dozen guys named "Todd" she's talking about now. I'd recommend this book to people with budgets in the neighborhood of 100,000 to 5 million. I wouldn't call it a very good resource for locating financing.
Blunt as Hell, Thank God.......2002-06-20
If you want to know more about what it's like to produce, rather than HOW to produce...this is the book. Vachon takes you through her life, and I've learned more about producing just from reading about one of her days. She's honest, doesn't preach much, doesn't give very many golden rules (since we all make our own), and tells you how it really is. If your tired of reading books on forms and paperwork, negotiating and contacts, and are just plain interested in what it's like to be IN IT, buy the book. It's so worth it.

This compelling and often startling book answers this, and many other questions about the oft-times violent world inhabited by our nation's police officers. This brilliantly written book tells how novice officers are trained to think about and use the power they have over life and death, explains how cops live with the awesome responsibility that comes from the barrels of their guns, reports how officers often hold their fire when they clearly could have shot, presents hair-raising accounts of what it's like to be involved in shoot-outs, and details how shooting someone affects officers who pull the trigger. From academy training to post-shooting reactions, this book tells the compelling story of the role that extreme violence plays in the lives of America's cops.

An Accurate View of the Kill Zone.......2007-06-12
Dr. Klinger is one of those rare people who has spent a substantial amount of time on the street as a cop and then gone on to earn a reputation as a serious scientist. He uses this unique combination of skills and insight to shed light on one of the most talked about and least well understood events in contemporary American life -- police shootings.
If you want the true story about what it's like to be in the kill zone where cops make life or death decisions, then live or die by them, this is the book for you. Klinger's interviews with 80 police officers who recounted incidents in which they used deadly force, were shot themselves, or exercised restraint even when they would have been justified to shoot are mesmerizing. They also have every bit of drama you would expect in a movie or TV, but with none of the b.s.
This is the truth, recounted by people who were there and recorded by a thoughtful scholar who's been there too. As another ex-cop who also is a scholar, I recommend this book most highly.
Fascinating read.......2007-05-22
Law enforcement people, in their own words, talk about how it felt to take a life, to come close to taking a life and then deciding it wasn't necessary, and to see someone else pull the trigger. Well told stories, very believable. The author's interpretations and comments are also excellent, blending theory and down-to-earth observations with compassion. If you've ever wondered what it's like to deal with a kill-or-be-killed situation, you'll probably like this book. I enjoyed it as a trip into a land I hope I never have to enter except on the printed page.
Recommended for cops and their families.......2007-03-28
The true police stories in this book are excellent reading. I would recommend it for Police Officers and their families or friends who want to get a better understanding of the job and some of the consequences we face every day. As a veteran police officer, I found the beginning sections a little boring, reading about recruits thoughts of the academy training and why they got into law enforcement, but the stories recounting the police shootings was priceless.
Good Read.......2007-03-09
Gives an in-depth look at what the officer using deadly force goes through as well as how and when an officer who ends up using deadly force first thought about the use thereof.
Into the Kill Zone.......2007-01-29
The book is an excellent resource for any Officer. The book offers insight in reference to deadly force situations and the aftermath. It is based on Officers experiences and perceptions.

Completely Dry.......2005-02-17
While it's great that he covers so many different areas in our global history of snipers, with his bibliography I could have cut and paste stories along a timeline too. This book while containing facts on actual events, left little to be desired as far as enjoying the read goes.
Limited in depiction of "sniper experience".......2004-01-11
The history of sniping provided is the usual standard stuff; like most books, this book begins its account from the American Revolution, continuing through the American Civil War and the World Wars to approximately the last decade, although "stalk and kill - the sniper experience" goes a long way back before that and should include the use of weapons other than firearms. In depicting post-World War 2 sniping, the author limits himself to theaters in which the British had influence (Falklands, Korea, Yemen etc) and the experiences of the British Army, various English mercenaries, and the SAS. He fails to discuss "the sniper experience" of Russia's wars, or the Caucasus, Africa, or the Middle East. While the book's best focus is on the First World War, it does not particularly shine even in portraying that theater. Overall a lackluster book of fairly limited scope.
Very good read........2003-11-10
It contains everything: rich history, amazing stories, and an huge bibliography. A pleasure to read.
The real dirt..........2002-03-05
This is an interesting non-fiction piece, which carries the reader through the historical evolution of snipers. If you've ever wanted to know how snipers came to be the way they are today, then this book is for you.
excellant.......2001-06-20
i would recomend this book to any body interseted in snipers and the tactics that snipers use to get with in killing range of their target, this book was very interesting and informative

An original revised shooting script for "Dressed To Kill." THIS COPY BELONGED TO THE PROPERTY MAN ON THE FILM BILL EUSTACE WHOSE SIGNATURE IS ON THE TOP OF THE TITLE PG. Dated 10/10/79 the manucript has color pgs. which indicate changes made to the screenplay + the manuscript is full of Eustace's handwritten notes on what props were to be used and the extras needed. The cast featured the wonderful Angie Dickinson, Michael Caine & Nancy Allen who was married to De Palma at the time. Very light wear to the covers. A strange and compelling mix of celebrity bio and social history, Ghost of a Chance is the autobiography of bandleader Peter Duchin. The son of an even more famous bandleader, Eddy Duchin, Peter Duchin was sent off to be raised by the friends of his socialite mother after her death. Those friends just happened to be the Harrimans, Averell and Marie. After watching "The Eddy Duchin Story," the Hollywood film version of his (biological) father's life, the younger Duchin recalls feeling "pretty beat up and confused." The same can be said of his life in general, but that's what happens when your paternal legacy includes one father who ranked among the top entertainers of an era and another who happened to be one of the richest and most important world figures of a century.
Book Description
Celebrated pianist, conductor, and composer Peter Duchin has been providing music for U.S. presidents, society galas, and charity events for more than 30 years. Now, in this compelling autobiography, Duchin offers both a poignant personal memoir and a fascinating account of life on the road with the band.

A lovely look backwards --.......2000-09-28
Do you remember cafe society? Do you remember a time when celebrity was synonymous with personality and not just notoriety? When gossip was DE-licious rather than MA-licious? When you hear the names of Vanderbilt, Kennedy, Whitney, Harriman, etc., do you immediately conjure up visions in your mind of huge estates and bigger-than-life sporting heroes?
Now in his sixties, Peter Duchin's memoirs quite naturally include the great names and personalities of the thirties and forties, as that was when his famous father ruled the keyboards as America's premier dance pianist. His society-born mother died within a week of his birth, and young Peter himself was given only a 'ghost of a chance' at survival.
In a time when godparents had a viable position in life, Peter was therefore wealthier than most; Marie and Averill Harriman took on the raising of the young boy, while his father served meritoriously in the Army, and then toured with his band in order to support himself and his son.
There cannot be anyone of any degree of celebrity who is not mentioned kindly in these pages--with one exception, Pamela Churchill Hayward Harriman. Ms Harriman, later the U.S. Ambassador to France, married often and well, and was never a friend to Duchin or his loved ones.
Young people of today will only shake their heads in wonder at the tales told here, and the lifestyles, now sadly vanished, of the truly 'rich and famous'. Movie stars, classical musicians, sportsmen, artists, dancers, restaurateurs, politicians, writers--they're all here--even the Vanderbilt's own family ghost!
You'll love this look at a world not likely to be seen again anytime soon. I surely did.
A fun look at a very interesting life........1998-03-12
Peter Duchin provides the reader with a guided tour of his often confusing but privileged life. There are several marvelous anecdotes about his life as a society bandleader. His one chapter on his view from the stage reveals much about the upper crust of American culture. For those interested in tid bits on celebrities, Mr. Duchin does not disappoint. He has known many famous people - in fact he had an especially close friendship with Jackie Onassis - and he shares his thoughts and experiences in those circles. "Ghost Of A Chance" is a fun book.
Social Handbook.......1997-04-26
If one is to believe what he has written, he is certainly a world class "freeloader."
Charming, funny and surprisingly interesting!.......1996-07-14
What a marvelous read!
Peter Duchin, son of the famous bandleader and a very distinguished musician and orchestra leader in his own right, has led an astonishingly interesting life, and has written about it gracefully, ruefully and with a becoming modesty.
His mother died a few days after he was born, and of course his father was always on the road, so he was raised from infancy by his late mother's best friend, Marie Harriman, and her husband Averell, and knew many of the most influential Americans and Europeans of their generation.
He went to Yale, chased skirts and immersed himself in music in late-50s Paris, and was present at the best parties in New York. Along the way he never lost his perspective; he is witty and engaging and never self-important.
The politically aware will especially enjoy his accounts of life in the Harriman household and especially his no-holds-barred account of Averell's relationship with Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward (later Pamela Harriman), who made a name for herself raising money for Democratic candidates and was rewarded by President Clinton with the U.S. Ambassadorship to France. Pamela Harriman, it happens, is also the former stepmother of Duchin's wife Brooke Hayward, and neither Peter nor Brooke make any secret of their scorn for the courtesan who seduced Leland Hayward and Averell Harriman.
I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir and recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in 20th century American cultural history.

I've been playing poker for sixty years but had never played Omaha. After reading this book I went online (Ultimate Bet)and was amazed. If you like Omaha online buy this book!

The ideas are good and clear.
Will improve your Omaha game.
Highly recommended.
A Rare Find.......2007-01-08
There is very little information available about the games of Omaha and Omaha high-low-split-eight-or-better (O8 for short) so this book is a rare find. The content is very straightforward and to the point, covering different forms of Omaha well. But it is not just a dry reference book, it was very entertaining. Which is good, it helps to keep you interested, focused and learning. I recommend this book to anyone looking to learn the game, or even just to improve their game.
Experienced players, this book will help refine your skills.......2006-12-20
This book is perfect for the experienced poker players who want to refine their skills. Not recommended for beginners.
Take it from multiple-pro-tournament winners T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy: Starting hand selection and flop reading are the two most important skills to develop for becoming a good Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo Eight-or-Better player.
They give you lots of example hands and flops, and explain what to avoid ("danglers") and what to seek out ("Acey-deucey").
A little jargony, but the detailed information as well as Cloutier's hilarious old-school stories make up for that.
It really helped me understand the various incarnations of Omaha and gave me a fighting chance against my buddies on poker night!
Good pointers.......2006-07-01
I enjoyed reading the book and got some good pointers. The section with advice on how to play certain hands depending on the format of the game (hi-low split, high-only, pot-limit or no-limit) is especially good. Also some good post-flop tips. The only negative I had was having references to a different format in the chapters for a particular format. For example, in the chapter on hi-low, saying you would play a certain hand in hi-low, but not in pot-limit. In other words, although good advice is given, I would prefer staying on the subject being addressed.

If you know what AA23ds means this book isn't for you. If you've never played O/8b then it's worth picking up.
There may be few, but they're all better than this........2003-06-29
What a piece of junk.
The majority of the book is in the order of, "Ah had this littl' hand down in a game in Texas an' the flop came with two little spades, so I pounded the sucker and then ah..." There are maybe 9 or 10 pages worth of content in the whole book. Most of it comes from McEvoy, and some of it is almost certainly wrong.
The section on Pot Limit is of questionable value, since most pot-limit Omaha games spread now are high-low, not straight high.
Bob Ciaffone's book is better, and Ray Zee's book is much better. Stick with them.
Essential Omaha.......2002-10-16
For those interested in mastering Omaha Hold 'Em there are very few books avalable on the market. And of those that have been published, T. J. Cloutier's "Championship Omaha" is by far the best guide available. Like other books in the "Championship" series, this book presents an organized look at starting hands, preflop play, flop play, tournament strategy, and more. Ever since T.J.'s books were mentioned in a televised interview by an amateur who placed second in the WSOP as being very instrumental in getting him there, these books have become highly sought after and hard to find. And with the case of this Omaha book, it's justified as it's the best available.
