Book Description

Jaw-dropping collection of UK horror video covers. Between 1980 and 1984, British video companies competed for shelf space with increasingly outrageous cover designs until a legal crackdown removed them from rental shops forever. This important book, from a private collection of rarities, documents those outlaw years of malevolent art with * 200 of the greatest horror video covers from the British 'video nasty' era * full-page, full-color reproductions * banned or suppressed video covers * covers for Evil Dead, Last House on the Left, Werewolves on Wheels, and Zombie Creeping Flesh This unabashed and uncensored collection celebrates the universal language of exploitation art in all its gory.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic look at exploitation.......2005-09-20

This book is a brilliant look at the way distributors and studios exploited film fans during the video nasty era, by not only evoking images for the video covers that were horrific, but in some cases actually had nothing to do with the film in question.

Which can lead you to discuss if, in fact, the studio and distributor were more responsible for the rise of the reputation of the "video nasty" than the actual films themselves.

An interesting look at a thankfully long gone era in film censorship.

5 out of 5 stars "The lucky ones got their brains blown out!".......2005-08-11

Beyond mandatory, if you don't own this book and keep it next to your bed then you're not a true horror fan. Hardcover with over 300 artworks from some of the wildest horror/exploitation movies ever released. You name it and it's here...BLOOD VENGEANCE, DEATH SHOCK, SS EXPERIMENT CAMP, THE BEAST IN HEAT, CANNIBAL TERROR, THE BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL, INVASION OF THE BLOOD FARMERS, SATAN WAR, KILLER NUN, WOMEN BEHIND BARS, SCHOOLGIRLS IN CHAINS, LOVE CAMP 7, MARDI GRAS MASSACRE the list goes on and on.

Quit reading this review and just buy it. Maybe they'll come out with a part 2! Slasher fans also check out "Legacy of Blood", great book.

The Missa solemnis is a document of extraordinary richness from the last decades of Beethoven's creative life. Download Description

The Missa Solemnis is a document of extraordinary richness from the last decades of Beethoven's creative life. In this accessible guide, William Drabkin considers the work as an expression of the most celebrated text of the Roman Catholic faith and as an example from a tradition of Mass settings in eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Austria. The opening chapters present various critical perspectives on the Missa Solemnis and chart the history of its composition, first performances, and publication. But, above all, the work itself is considered in detail, including the overall design, connections between the movements, the orchestration, word painting, and programmatic elements.

      Book Description

Masterpiece of sacred music structured around the 5 divisions of the Ordinary of the Catholic Mass. Too monumental for ordinary liturgical purposes but a work that stands with Bach's Mass in B Minor as a sublime vision of faith — both personal and universal. Reprinted complete and unabridged from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition. Translation of texts.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Excellence.......2007-03-12

The Dover Full Score editions are an unprecedented buy these days. Scores, especially full orchestral, much less works like the Missa (with addition of full chorus and soloists) are so often impossible to read, poor type/space, etc. This edition is well-bound, beautifully printed, ample space for notations (and I make MANY as I study); such a great bargain. The company also delivered swiftly and packaged the book well, it arrived it perfect condition. Excellence all around. I also have the Complete Beethoven Symphonies, Mozart Piano Concerti, etc. many Dover scores and they are above all others. Don't waste your money on anything else. Even the cover designs are handsomely done and make an aesthic accent on the desk top!

4 out of 5 stars Usefull for learning........2006-01-30

As a student of conducting, I find this to be a very usefull score. Having the choir in original cleffs, as well as the orchestral transpositions and score ordering of the Romantic era are really good practices for full score reading, and instant transposition. I find that though there are no measure numbers or letter markings, getting that information does not take long. For the price, it is worth the extra effort to learn to read cleffs.

      3 out of 5 stars FYI.......2003-09-05

For those thinking of purchasing this edition, keep in mind that like many Dover scores, this one uses C-cleff notation. I'm not sure if I am supposed to be reviewing the work, or the edition. But I assume it's the edition, since nothing I say could possibly effect the way the music world's opinion of the great Missa Solemnis. Other than the cleff, it's a quality score.

5 out of 5 stars Dover has done it again!.......2000-03-24

Dover is a blessing for music students and music lovers alike! Their sturdy and inexpensive scores last and last and last. This one of the Beethoven 'Missa Solemnis' is no exception. I was happy to see such a great work available at such an inexpensive price. The majesty of Beethoven's masterpiece is now accessible to all at a very reasonable cost. Jump on it and get it!

Wilfred Mellers casts the most breadthtaking perspective on Beethoven, ever. Well, we do have Tovey, so take a bit of that breadth away.. and so many enlightening recordings, countless opportunities to hear the great living performers.

Back to Mellers:his brilliantly lit path, a trajectory, travels primarily through the piano sonatas, leading to the ulitmate work: the Missa Solemnis.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent contribution to Beethoven scholarship.......2003-10-30

Prof. Kinderman has done Beethoven scholarship a terrific service with this beautiful set of three volumes; the facsimile is gorgeous, the transcriptions appear to be highly accurate and the commentary is both knowledgeable and insightful. Anyone interested in the development of Beethoven's late compositions, especially the Missa Solemnis, will want to have a copy of this first-rate set. Of all of the sketchbook transcriptions released thus far, this one stands head and shoulders above all the rest. As Project Director of The Unheard Beethoven, I've read a lot of Beethoven manuscripts and must say that Kinderman has done an excellent job of puzzling out Beethoven's often impossible handwriting and converting it into something that makes sense to the rest of us. The price is incredibly reasonable for the value that's here as well. I treasure my copy. Mark Zimmer

                  1 out of 5 stars Horrendous!.......2007-02-25

I was browsing through Borders books the other day and I saw this book on the shelf. I thought to myself "Wow, I have never seen or heard of this book." I picked it up to have a quick look through and I ended up reading the whole book in about half an hour. (There isn't much to it). This book is just a total disgrace. It is the worst poker book I have ever seen- even worse than John Vorhaus's book "Killer poker online" (At least he probably spent quite some time actually writing that book ignoring the fact that the book sucks). There is no strategy whatsoever, it's basically about how to deposit money, how to download the software etc. The strategic advice is basically "Play very straightforwardly online because your opponents aren't paying attention anyway." Brunson ought to hang his head in shame, he is just trying to use his name to capitalize on the poker boom and dupe beginners into buying a product that will do nothing to help develop their game. I have lost any respect I ever had for Brunson.

                  1 out of 5 stars shocking!.......2007-01-05

I am shocked, stunned and appalled that a lifetime professional poker player would take advantage of poker newcomers simply for money! People, a few years ago you parents would have warned you to stay away from people like Doyle Brunsen! Now everyone thinks he is this kind old grandfater type! Get real!

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2006-09-20

I cant believe that Doyle Brunson feels he needs money so bad that he should put his name on this book. This book is aimed at someone who has never used the internet before. If you have managed to play online poker for real money then you are already too sophisticated for this book. Yet another book that is simply cashing in on the poker boom and doesnt offer anything of value.
Buy Harrington on Hold'em if you want to win money at poker.

2 out of 5 stars Blatant Ad for Doyle's Room.......2006-05-18

This book reads more like an advertisement and FAQ for Doyle's online poker room. There is very little of value here for the money. Do yourself a favor and buy "Super System" or another title that has worthwhile advice.

3 out of 5 stars Well, I don't think its target audience has been buying and reviewing it.......2006-05-15

This book seems to have been a disappointment to many who read it, though it is mostly because these people were not the intended readers.

This book is really written for people just getting started or thinking about getting started with online poker, or poker in general. It has several chapters that cover the very basics of online poker, including something as seemingly simple as how to download and install the software. If you already play poker online, this book will not improve your game much. It is, unfortunately for many of us, really designed for BEGINNERS. I would have found its information much more useful if I'd read it within the first month I started playing. After playing for over a year, much of its information was already commonplace to me. Picking up this book at any experience level will probably improve your game SOME, just not nearly as much as some other books out there.

While Doyle Brunson is an authority on poker, his expertise just doesn't really come through in this style of book. Again, this is a decent book for those just getting started. However, if you are already an OK player or have been playing for a few months, you will probably want to skip about half of the chapters. There are some decent tips and strategies revealed, but just not enough to warrant a reading of the entire book by any kind of intermediate player.

                    Book Description

Twenty-first century TV offers an apparently endless stream of images, unfolding at high speed. We no longer watch individual programs but flick from channel to channel, absorbing a continuous flow of news, game shows, comedy, drama, movies, advertising and trailers. Television: Technology and Cultural Form was first published in 1974, long before the dawn of multi-channel TV, or the reality and celebrity shows that now pack the schedules. Yet Williams' analysis of television's history, its institutions, programs and practices, and its future prospects, remains remarkably prescient. TV offers an apparently endless engagement with a flood of Williams stresses the importance of technology in shaping the cultural form of television, while always resisting the determinism of Marshall McLuhan's dictum that "the medium is the message". If the medium really is the message, Williams asks, what is left for us to do or say? Williams argues that, on the contrary, we as viewers have the power to disturb, disrupt and to distract the otherwise cold logic of history and technology - not just because television is part of the fabric of our daily lives, but because new technologies continue to offer opportunities, momentarily outside the sway of transnational corporations or the grasp of media moguls, for new forms of self and political expression.

                          Book Description

Since the 1950s British broadcasters have used American programmes as schedule fillers, cornerstones and as 'must see' attractions. However, many critics, broadcasters and scholars alike have tended to malign, ignore or sideline the contribution such programmes have made to British television. Through analysis of popular and industrial discourses, the changing roles of such programmes on British screens and interviews with key British broadcasters, this work explores how American programs have become an important part of British television culture.

                              Book Description

Crammed full of contemporary comedy examples and house-hold names, from the music hall tradition to contemporary sitcoms, Andy Medhurst considers how English comedy reflects national concerns with class, race, gender and sexuality and traces the recurrence of themes and structures.

Examining popular English comedies and comedians in the twentieth century, ranging from the Carry On films to the work of Mike Leigh and contemporary sitcoms such as The Royle Family, and from George Formby to Alan Bennett and Roy 'Chubby' Brown, the book argues that comedy plays a pivotal role in the construction of cultural identity.

Medhurst presents case studies of comic traditions and representations, and examines key figures in English comic history, including Mike Leigh, Alan Bennett and Victoria Wood.

Part history and part polemic, A National Joke is a book that will not only entertain, it will enlighten and inform any student, scholar, or general reader of our national comedy.

                                Book Description

`Most cultural analysis focuses on the spectacular and the unusual. Frances Bonner has done us a great service by insisting on - and demonstrating - the importance of everyday TV. Ordinary Television breaks genuinely new ground' - Toby Miller, New York University

In this book, Frances Bonner provides a distinctive angle on a key area of research and teaching across media and cultural studies - the content of television and the relations between television genres and audiences.

Hitherto most books on television have focused on drama, or news and current affairs. In other words, they tend to ignore 'ordinary' television - lifestyle programmes and 'reality TV', just the sort of programmes which increasing dominate the schedules.

In Ordinary Television, Frances Bonner makes a distinctive argument for regarding these disparate shows as a whole. By examining a substantial range of these programmes, Frances Bonner uncovers their shared characteristics, especially through a consideration of the dominant and disguised discources which pervade them. In addition, the comparative nature of her study enables the author to launch a powerful critique of conventional theories in relation to the globalization of television.

This book will be invaluable reading for anyone interested in television and the media in general.

Drawing on recent work on cultural theory, anthropologist Dorothy Anger examines the televised product and the industry that spawns it in order to understand the impact of the soaps on society. Particular attention is given to the ways in which the implicit messages of the soaps reflect and help to generate conceptions of gender roles in different societies to provide a "continuing renewal of the familiar".
