Tom Stoppard has always had an ear for the Bard, stretching back to his surreal and hilarious early plays Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Dogg's Hamlet, and Cahoots Macbeth. For those who have already seen the film Shakespeare in Love, this screenplay offers a chance to savor Stoppard's exuberant collaboration with the renowned screenwriter Marc Norman. The result gives us, among many other things, a dog, Hamlet, Kit Marlowe, Elizabeth I, and probably one of the best screenplays in modern cinema based on Shakespeare.
The pace of the script, from its opening long shot of London in 1593 to the final shot of Viola walking off into her brave new world, is breathtaking. The verbal fireworks and Shakespearean borrowings are not only worthy of the Bard himself, but perfectly re-create the conditions of the Elizabethan theater. The jokes and allusions fly thick and fast, often straining the agility of even the most nimble Shakespeare scholar, but at the heart of the screenplay is both a compelling love story and an ingenious perspective on the inspiration behind both Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night. A wonderful piece of writing--long may Shakespeare in Love keep the Bard in fashion! --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous..........2000-06-05
...particularly if you are one of those people who think Shakespeare is boring or too difficult (most of us remember the NIGHTMARE of getting through one play at school, right?). Well, kiss boredom goodbye, banish your nightmares and prepare for a TREAT! This is funny, intelligent, fast-paced and heartbreaking, all at the same time - rather like Shakespeare, in fact!
LOVE IS A STORM OF WORDS AND THUNDER.......2000-05-24
Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard wrote the screenplay of Shakespeare in Love. The film is marvellous and so powerful that no one can resist that love drama. The story of Romeo and Juliet is itself so frightfully emotional that no one can resist the charm of the tragedy and the pain of the love story. So many artists, in so many genres and arts, have tried themselves at adapting this story, this play, this tragedy to their stages or screens or canvasses, and all have been inspired so deeply by Shakespeare's story that Romeo and Juliet have become a true galaxy of masterpieces and stars. The latest ever produced is Shakespeare in Love and the screenplay is richer, more poignant and freer than the images of the film. The screenplay is enriched with stage directions that are so brilliant, so precious that the text, the dialogue, what is going to become the words of the actors, is enhanced and beautified by them. After a while we don't even know what is the gem and what is the golden bed that carries the gem. The screenplay is by itself a work of art, a masterpiece, and the film, if you watch it again afterwards, finds tremendous new meanings and undeemable finesse in the recollections you may have kept of all those lines that are not said, that are not shown, that are at best translated into images, settings, flying visual impressions that the words of the stage directions anchor in your memory, your heart and your brain with delicate tendrils that cannot break anymore. Any lover of Shakespeare, any lover of literature, any lover of love dramas and hate tragedies must read that screenplay to see how laughter and tears can intermingle in an unbreakable alliance. Dr Jacques COULARDEAU, Universities of Paris, IX and II.
Viola and Will what an item!.......2000-01-31
I truly love this book! It shows passion, love, comedy, and history. The movie, Shakespeare in Love is my favorite movie, so I loved this book!
Shall I Compare Thee To A Summers Day.......2000-01-04
If you're a sucker for Shakespeare, like me, I would defenately bye this book. I had a proffessor who told me once that people go to the movies to escape from reality. This movie supports that statement. When I watch this movie or read the screenplay I fall into another time were love is the object your heart longs for most. One thing I like about this movie is how it brings facts into a fictional affair. The "actors" portrayed in this movie really did exist and they played in the very theatres dipicted; I love that! Marlowe, Shakespeare's "enemy" was really stabbed in a bar fight and there are many more factual things about the movie. I also like how the writers made it so that Will Shakespeare gave Viola the sonnet Shall I Compare Thee To A Summers Day and incorporated Romeo and Juliet into the movie. Sheer genious! And a great tear jerker! Wonderfully acted and written. It makes you fall in love with a time period almost forgotten. I simply loved it!
HOW COULD IT NOT GET BEST PICTURE.......1999-11-10
This movie showed us what true love really is. One person said "Ryan should have gotten best pic". Well, Red Line was way much better than that pic becuase it explored emotions and showed the feelings of each character. Ryan...good effects. Shakespeare In Love is well written and well acted. It is a love story that is never told. Just like our own lives.

Nice Book.......2007-07-22
While it's just a short collection of Shakesphere related to the movie, it's an easy read for people that aren't that well read with poetry. And it makes a great way to say I love you to someone. May be for Chritsmas or Valentines Day. I used it as a nice reference to place quotes in wedding cards.
Buy it for the pictures, not the poetry........2000-10-03
I've seen many books that excerpt Will's love sonnets and dialogues, and this one is no different--except for one thing. It includes wonderful pictures from the movie--mostly of Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow. If you're a fan of the movie Shakespeare in Love (I am!!!!), you'll definitely love this book; however, if you're looking for a more complete verion of the Bard's work, you'd be better investing in an anthology.
good intro to Shakespeare and love.......2000-06-23
As a tie-in with the movie, this is a pretty great book. As a book of Shakespeare's sonnets and love poetry, it's not the best. It's a good book to own if you really enjoyed the movie or are just getting introduced to Shakespeare.
Some omissions, but nice tie-in with the movie.......2000-05-20
There are better collections of Shakespeare's works. The main sellint point here is obviously the tie-in with the movie, but it's still a very nice book.
If you liked the movie and want to read more romantic words from Shakespeare, you can hardly go wrong with this.
An Expensive Book!.......1999-08-15
I expect much more than only a selection of Shakespeare's sonnets, and a few quotes from his plays in this book. Perhaps I am too greedy, but I expected all the 154 sonnets of Shakespeare in this book.
But the photos from the movie are beautiful. The movie's fans will enjoy looking at them.

Book Description
After years of working day jobs and making music in his basement, Jacob Slichter wondered if his dreams of rock stardom were a vain illusion. Then he was recruited by two of his successful musician friends to form a band that became Semisonic. Who could forget the smash single “Closing Time,” a runaway hit in 1998 that thrust Jake and his bandmates into the international spotlight and helped them sell over two million albums worldwide? But along the road to fame and success came bewilderment and personal chaos: How will we ever get a record deal? Which record company is the best? The worst? Do I really have to wear these ridiculous boots? Why isn’t radio playing our song? What if I have a panic attack right here on stage? What should I write on this fan’s CD? Am I famous? Why isn’t the video director getting more shots of me? Did I say the wrong thing during that interview? Help!
So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star is a telling and witty look at what happens just before and during one's time in the spotlight. Jake takes readers on a step-by-step journey of his evolution from fledgling drummer to globetrotting performer and proves to be the perfect guide—feisty and humbled—to the inner workings of the music industry and instant celebrity. So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star speaks to all of us who dream again and again of rock superstardom and shows how one kid can go from picking up a pair of drumsticks to picking up a platinum record.
Customer Reviews:
Closing Time: The rise and fall of Semisonic.......2007-10-04
If you are over 12 years old, you probably remember the song, "Closing Time" by the band, Semisonic. The song was played everywhere during the spring and summer of 1998 and reached the top of the popular music charts. This entertaining book tells the story of just how this song, and the band who recorded it, reached that pinnacle of success, as seen from the perspective of the man behind the drum kit, Jacob Slichter. He also goes on to describe how the Music Industry, including a host of executives and radio programmers, contributed to their demise as a recording group. There are likely very few books that give an insider's view of the machinery involved in producing "the next big hit" as well as this one does, and the barriers that prevent a lot of good music from ever reaching your ears (at least in the days before the internet).
Mr. Slichter reveals all his insecurities as his band suddenly takes off, his euphoria when Semisonic was at its peak, and his disappointment in his label's failure to capitalize on the success of "Closing Time" and the CD on which it appeared, "Feeling Strangely Fine." For those of you who may have relegated Semisonic to the "One-hit Wonders" category, their other CDs, "Great Divide" and "All About Chemistry" are worth a listen to dispel that impression. The latter features a duet with Carole King, "One True Love," that could easily have been a radio hit (the book describes how this song came to be, including Mr. Slichter's own star-struck reactions to the making of the recording).
This book is well-written, and well worth your time if you have ever asked yourself, "Whatever happened to Semisonic?" Mr. Slichter gives a heartfelt account of his years with Semisonic, but also reveals his wit and sense of humor in this story. He provides a cautionary tale for those who aspire to rock and roll stardom, and a guide to the pitfalls along that path...and why he would gladly do it all over again.
Smooth transition from drummer to writer.......2007-06-22
What a pleasant surprise of a read. Slichter really does have a terrific writing style and a genuine gift for weaving humor into his storytelling. The story of Semisonic is hardly the most tragic in rock n' roll history, but this book places many larger aspects of life in the big-money music world into perspective. Wanna-be rock stars beware.
Best book about Being in a band.......2006-06-17
This book is by far the best book i've read about being in a band.Jacob Slichter tells of his heart warming, honest, humourous and exciting times as a rock and roll drummer. You won't find the same old stupid rock stories of wild groupie orgys or moronic substance abuse just human stories that anyone can relate too. i recommend this to anyone who has an interest in music.
an entertaining and informative read.......2006-03-07
I work in the music industry, and I recommend this book to everyone I know, ESPECIALLY new artists. Slichter peels back the veneer of the rock-n-roll lifestyle from the inside-out in a lively and highly informed fashion, pausing only occasionally for a modicum of self-pity. It's great fun to read, and a deep shock to some who don't necessarily know the inside working of the music industry. A valuable addition to any musician's bookshelf.
Awesome inside view of being in a rock band........2006-03-03
As a musician wanting to make music a career I found this book
to be a great benefit to read. It offered a fantastic insider's view of the work of a working rock band from its very beginning steps to the upper rungs of the ladder. A must read for any musician thinking of prusuing music as a serious career.

The One True Spell was a woman, and her name was Mystra -- and her kisses were wonderful.
Priest Havilon Tharnstar

When a dragon-riding magelord sweeps down upon him, though, the boy is thrust into a world of harsh realities, corrupt rulers, and evil sorcerers.
With patience and grit, Elminster sets about to change all that. The result of his labors is a world reborn and a mage made.

Trust your imagination over this drivel .......2007-08-03
I admit I turned to this older book in my bookcase after having just finished the sellswords series by R.A. Salvatore ( the true king of forgotten realms ), and found myself in need of a quick - and what I presumed to be - an enjoyable read. The first two chapters are interesting, but only serve to draw the reader into what quickly becomes a total morass of a story. Coupled by the total lack of character development, as well as providing any remote attempt at explaining how a young Elminster encounters his cohorts ( with exception to Helm ) - this book quickly became something that I almost looked forward to putting down before deciding to put away all together. One reviewer alluded to having to memorize the names of characters that are about 80% unimportant to the story, which is true, and almost as frustrating as Ed Greenwood's use of the word "sobbing", in describing a wounded mage or armsman; a word that appears so often it is back to back in consecutive pages in many instances just through the first 30 pages. I don't normally write disparaging reviews, but I felt compelled to do so regarding the circumstances involving this book. It is hard to believe that Ed Greenwood is the founder of forgotten realms - I've encountered many books from many genres and this is one of the worst books that I have ever read.
Greenwood's literary gift!.......2006-12-21
This book took a while for me to get into, but once it took off, it was worth the read. The setting is not the Realms that of the present. It is a time between Netheril-(my favorite) and anywhere I have ever read about. The main character is Elminster, star of many other contemporary FR novels. I always took him as a dirty old man. Now, his distant past is revealed giving some insight into his character. I guess when your first lover is a goddess, you may never stop longing for women!
This entry takes us on a wild romp with trademark humor, and few familiar sights along the way. This is a change of pace. I cannot say this was my favorite of his. "Spellfire" had the most action, "Cormyr" the most depth. This was the best written of all, might I say a future classic of the series! I am hooked...
I loved it..........2006-04-18
I loved this book. It was a very fun read. If you are into short books that go quickly, then this is the book for you. The only thing that I didn't like about this book is that the author dragged the initial part of the story out and rushed the ending like it was an after-thought. Overall it was a good book.
Could have been much better..........2006-03-04
This book, simply put, is boring. I would have thought that the creator of the entire Forgotten Realms universe could come up with great stories, it seems I was wrong. Overall, Greenwood's writing is dull, and rarely kept me interested in any aspect of the story.
Let's start with the characters. Firt off, you have Elminster, who, being the main character, you'd hope to be interesting or remarkable in some way. Sadly, he doesn't live up to any of these expectations, he is boring, the only remarkable aspect being his godly and unrealistic power, which he gains with little effort. Now that he's out of the way, you have every other minor character, which Greenwood fails to flesh out, as well. I must say, there's nothing more annoying than having to flip back 100 or so pages because the author expects you to remember a minor character, yet he/she wasn't interesting enough to care about in the first place. Unfortunately, this happens multiple times in the book.
The story, while hackneyed, is what gives this book 2 stars instead of 1. I believe that the story was boring, sadly, but had the potential to be better. We, as readers, could have done without the unbearable amount of clichés and points where it feels like chapters upon chapters of the book were torn out. On top of that, many scenes were dragged out, as if the author were frantically trying to think of what to wirter next, and letting whatever popped into his head flow from his fingers. I guess the main positive thing about the story was that it had some decent twists and turns, nothing, save for the overall fate of our main character, was all that predicatable.
I just don't know what to say... reading this book was not a fun experience, every chapter just seemed like another mountain to climb, yet there was no satisfaction when reaching the top. I just could not bring myself to like this book, and finishing it seemed like a chore, rather than a pleasure.
All in all, I would not recommend this book, and while it is not exactly *terrible*, it's just not worth your time to read.
A Humble Mage's Beginning.......2006-02-10
This is the start of Elminster, the greatest and oldest Mage alive in the Forgotten Realms universe. Interestingly this book was much better than others I have read by Ed Greenwood, and was not quite expecting to be able to enjoy this much.
I found that the way Greenwood decided Elminster would learn to be a mage is very different from the way I have seen it done many times over and I truly enjoyed `growing' with him. Through the different phases of his life until he decided to finally accept magic and worship Mystra ( The Goddess of Magic).
Elminster's parents have been destroyed by one of the MageLord's of the realm and Elminster swears death to all Magelords, and truly seeks this through the book, and truly waits patiently for the right time to take his vengence.
One thing about Ed Greenwood is that if your reading his books you can't have any distractions. If you do you will get lost very very quick. I did have to back up a few times to understand what was going on. I was confused many other times as new characters seems to be introduced for the first time in the last thirty pages of the book, but all in all it comes together and the story survives the confusion.
So if your curious about Elminster's background, this is the best place to find it ( as well as where to start ). Someone not too well read in the Forgotten Realms might get a little lost in it all ( since Greenwood created the Realms he is very detailed ), but much of that can be looked over to find the real story, which is very good.
