look at the Transitions palette.......2005-09-12

The book gives you the essential knowledge to quickly ramp up on Premiere 6.5. You learn of the fundamental importance of the transitions palette. It acts as a backbone to your video. One remark by Sengstack is worth repeating. Make the transitions palette full screen. Its elements are an excellent overview of the most important Premiere elements. Like the Clock Dissolve, which lets you dissolve from one image to another. A highly used method.

But the book is more than just a recital of Premiere methods. Equally valuable are the author's suggestions of good usage. Perhaps the main thing to beware is not to use a fancy special effect for its own gee whiz sake. The narrative should always make sense, and within this, you can sparingly use special effects.

If you need to get up and running quickly, this book is for you. It's concise and to the point. Like other books in the 24 Hours series, it is a place to start. Finish it, then start reading the more in depth books on Pemiere and non linear editing.

My only complaint is: the book has black and white illustrations that are small and hard to read.

This book is exactly what I needed. It goes further than just saying " click this and this then do this " . His explanations are shorts and clear. I really appreciated his movie production and his shooting tips. I think the title should be " Everything you need to realize a good movie ". Althought I wouldn't recommend it for uncle John going to make their vacation video, since there would be too much uneeded information.

Also offers those important tips that keeps your production from looking like a beginners, and warns you about the slight bugs and problems with Adobe Premiere and how to solve them. If you've ever wondered what all those hundreds of buttons and do, the ones you've never found a use for, this book will explain it all in great detail. The author dissects Adobe Premiere - in fact, a better title for this book would have been 'Inside Adobe Premiere 6.5'

Teach yourself Premiere in 24 hours - as Einstein once said, Time is relative. If you just bought a digital camcorder and you want to splice some clips together, then move on with life, consider a different book such as Adobe Premiere for Dummies. This book makes a great reference manual, but lacks the basics for beginners. This is targeted more towards the advanced video editor with some past experience.

Video effects add 'spice.' Consider the 'meat.' A few fades, cut-away's, and a touch of transition is all it takes to edit quality raw footage. This book covers video and audio effects in great detail and provides a lot of insight into movie making. He does get a little pompous, so don't let him push you around e.g. A/B editing. This book, as well as Adobe Premiere for Dummies, insist you use single track editing. Don't be intimidated. If you understand Adobe's concept of 'layers' in Photoshop, you will find A/B editing more intuitive and easier to use.

You can use this book for Premiere 6.0, as well as 6.5 - unless you're really big on 'titles'. For authoring DVD's, most authoring programs provide mpeg2 encoding, something to consider before spending the money on the upgrade to 6.5.

I deployed to Afghanistan in May 2006. The morning of my departure, I received a phone call from both of the authors of this book. Willie and Turk wished me luck and a safe return on my journey. It was a memory that has been with me ever since. Just this past week, I had the fortune of getting to see Willie Nelson in concert (The Last of Breed Tour) for the first time in my 33 years. It was an amazing show and I also had the pleasure of meeting him backstage as he proceeded to the stage to perform with Merle Haggard and Ray Price. What an experience!
While on deployment I was able to read this book. There is little happiness in Afghanistan these days. But every night prior to lights out, I could always count on a smile and a reflection of my life through the words in this book. It was a pleasure to read.

Great Openings for Tactical Play.......2007-09-05

I bought the book because my current opening repertoire was somewhat slow and boring. I wanted something with a little bite and fire.Well, I got it in this book. The openings are fun to play, often creating very dynamic positions where your "combinative vision" gets exercised.

Things I like:
- The resulting positions are generally open and fun to play - if you like sharp tactical positions
- They have TONS of position diagrams - this is very helpful when they go off on side line positions. Instead of rattling off 10 moves and leave it for you to poke them out on a chessboard they give you the diagrams as you go.
- Their comments are easy to understand.
- I liked the heavy treatment of the French. It's actually alot of fun to play against as white for me using their suggestions. I used to dread it because I used to play the King's Indian attack against it. Snoozer if you aren't bobby fischer!
- I've enjoyed playing their recommendations for the Sicilian Grand Prix.

Things I don't like:
- Some of the prose is silly. It sounds like something you'd hear out of a used car salesman. You'll know what I mean when you see it.

One final word: This book is for the COMMON, AVERAGE chess player. If you are a IM or GM then you should look somewhere else. And if you are a IM or GM and review this book..keep in mind maybe it doesn't provide all YOU need to compete at your level..and maybe some of the lines AT YOUR LEVEL aren't sufficient....but at my level it is FANTASTIC and exactly what I need.

Good Easy Read.......2007-03-21

This book is great because you can read it without a board. This makes the material easy to absorb and you can fly through the book compared to some others where you have to go back and reconstruct a position after going through a long tedious variation. The openings choice was very nice and the book will give you a complete response to the black relpies without any major holes. The openings are easy to learn but you can feel free to substitute in your own lines for the ones that you are not comfortable with or if you would like to press for more in the opening. I would estimate that this book is suitable for under 2000. Above that you should work harder to get more out of the opening. My only gripe is that the cover fell off the first day but I can overlook this with the great content.

Openings For White.......2006-11-17

This book is good for beginers who need a quick start to opening play from the white side. It is not intended to be comprehensive in all areas but, to direct one's play to a repertoire under 1.e4 as white's first move. This book does a good job at this.

If you are just beyond being a beginning and are in search of what openings might be right for you then this book will be helpful. It does a good job of telling you about the limited opening system it covers. I doubt that every opening suggested in the system will fit most people. But with that in mind, you can pick and select parts of things and add from other books (such as a general book that covers openings and ideas like "Understanding the Chess Openings). You will need to look around and should listen to what well known authors have to say about different openings. But that is what makes learning an opening fun. I also suggest to learn the ideas in the openings get a couple of good books on opening chess traps. This will help you understand the ideas and tactics in the openings (there are a lot of choices for chess opening trap books). Understanding the pawn structures in your openings would come next.

In conclusion: I recommend as a first book to learn openings getting a good book that covers understanding of the ideas and gives you a general guide. This book doesn't do that. But, I would suggested it as a second or third book when investigating which opening might be best for you.

Good, but not for beginners.......2006-11-10

I'd had high hopes for this book, and they were mostly fulfilled. While this is a repertoire book, it's incredibly thorough. Based around playing 1. e4 and aiming for the Scotch Gambit (a fun opening and an old favorite of mine), it provides extensive data on how to play almost any defense Black can throw at you. There are recommended lines for major openings such as the Sicilian and the French, and minor ones such as the Philidor Defense and Latvian Gambit. Many lines contain theoretical novelties devised by co-author Roman Dzindzichashvili. The is also probably the most heavily illustrated chess book I've ever come across, with many, many diagrams not only for the main lines, but also the variations and analyses. The diagrams are clear and easy to read, and even a weak player such as I can follow along without a chessboard.

My one criticism, and I think it's important enough to cost the book one star, is that variations end without giving the reader any hint of what to do next, what plan to follow. For stronger players, this isn't a problem. But, for those new to Chess (or just those openings), a paragraph or two at the end of at least the major variations to point out likely plans would have been very handy. The book is already huge at 448 pages, so I would have preferred cutting out one of the first two chapters in favor adding text on likely plans.

Overall, however, I recommend this as a modern reference work to a large number of King-pawn openings, particularly the more obscure.

"Zen and the Art" For Singles.......2006-11-27

I think this book is hilarious and a must read for men and women. However, it should be viewed as a guide for sex as in the way that "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence" is understood as an actual handbook on Zen or motorcycles. In Pirsig's "Zen...", Zen and motorcycles are used as images of freedom and spirituality for a man finding himself. Sex is used largely in the same way for Heimel: a vehicle to express the new freedoms and emotional turmoil young adults face as they wrestle with adult romatic relationships.
And it is very funny; laugh-out-loud, read-it-to-your-friends-and-neighbors-even-boyrfriend, funny.
Easy to relate to, poignant and very funny.
What else do you want from a book?
Buy it; read it; share it. You won't regret it.

afternoon fun.......2005-06-10

what a nice book...there are so many truths in there which even my aunt has shared with us after college, like afternoon sex and dating your boss. Anyways, while this is a bit of a dated book, it is funny, witty and presents a lighter side of an otherwise tabou topic (in most families, not in ours!).

Still Crazy After All These Years.......2005-02-14

During my freshman year of college one of my friends gave me this book for my birthday. I was slightly shocked to receive it, but after one week it was well worn through by nearly every girl on our floor. It wasn't really so much about sex but more about being a single woman and dealing with things like being boy crazy and whining about the lack of quality men.

Two years later, when I turned 21, my older brother gave me this book for my birthday. And then two years after that, I saw it in a Munich bookstore in the very slim English books section. Obviously it was a popular book.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the material is somewhat dated. It's still quite a fun read. If you don't take it seriously as a true "sex tips" manual, you won't be disappointed.

Ridiculous.......2003-09-14

Well, I am torn between giving this book 1 or 5 stars. If taken seriously, 1 is too generous a number. However, my friends and I enjoy her ridiculous takes on such timeless issues as race relations, father fixations, masturbatory techniques, zen and the art of diaphragm insertion, and a guide to horniness (symptoms include nauseau, blurred vision, and SARS like sickness), to name a few.
Has Ms. Heimel ever met a man? One cannot be sure, but my money is on 'no'. This book makes me nauseous, and not in the good sense.

This book should be required reading for every woman on the planet who even THINKS she may have sex with a man! I've used the tips myself and the segment on 'How to be Blindingly Beautiful' was dead on!

This must be a sign of the final straw in the fight between commercialism and normalcy. The Publisher's Weekly review couldn't be more wrong. While there is material here that will remind the reader of other of Heimel's columns and books, the attentive and thoughtful reader will realize that this book too represents what all the other have: a courageousness not found among very many to rail against what the rest of us accept without question on a day-to-day basis. Heimel reminds us again and without apology that women are human, that people are by and large the same if they can get outside of what they are in the habit of believing to be true. This book is an installement in a life story, not a hip coffee table book published to sate the attention span of the average teenager. While it still is both (a testament to Heimel's genius, and what makes her so valuable as a cultural expert) mature readers should not rate this book on whether or not it offers us something modern, but on its ability to provoke thought, and change.

She is the author of The Girl's Guide to Getting It On and Fantasy Sex.
