Book Description
Informative and entertaining, Reel Justice rates trial scenes in films on a one-to-four-gavel scale, with four being a classic and one being "ask for a new trial." Authors Paul Bergman and Michael Asimow, both accomplished law professionals, discuss the cultural messages encoded in the films, point out what went right and wrong in scenes where liberties were taken, and even answer a few legal questions along the way.
Completely revised and reformatted from the successful first edition, this new edition of Reel Justice includes more than two dozen recent movies as well as many older favorites that weren't covered in the first version. Just a few of the films reviewed:
" A Time to Kill
" Legally Blonde
" Philadelphia
" Inherit the Wind
" A Few Good Men
" The Devil's Advocate
" I Am Sam
" Intolerable Cruelty
" Rules of Engagement
" Twelve Angry Men
" Ghosts of Mississippi
" Runaway Jury
Reel Justice is an indispensable video guide for film viewers who want the legal lowdown on courtroom scenes.
Customer Reviews:
Better than a LSAT...a great review of legal principles.......2006-12-20
Please take note: The book has been updated in 2006 so the new edition includes significantly more movie analysis than the earlier copies. After giving a quick synopsis of "courtroom movies" of all kinds...including comedy...these two law professors discuss the legal issues raised by the films. For example: Did the lawyers use a correct basis for an appeal, what are the standards for expert witnesses, was the cross-examination proper, did the judge make legal error in failing to grant a motion to disqualify the jurors, did a lawyer make unethical statements in his closing argument, etc. Simply a terrific review of legal procedure for those who love the movies.
the best reference book updated.......2006-06-07
Narayan of Rebeccasreads highly recommends REEL JUSTICE as a great companion for the courtroom movie buff.
"Every third Hollywood movie is bound to be a courtroom drama/ legal thriller." Not 100% true -- every third movie every produced is bound to be one. The fascination with law, lawyers & courtrooms is not restricted to Hollywood -- it also holds true for Bollywood (Hindi movies) & Mollywood -- the Malayalam movie industry over here in Kerala, India -- where I'm from.
But how real are the concepts of law, courtroom & lawyers presented in movies? Through a finely selected collection of movies -- law professors & exponents in law & popular culture -- authors Paul Bergman & Michael Asimow explain where fact ends & fiction begins in some of the all-time classic movies from around the world.
Though I've seen many of the courtroom classics discussed in REEL JUSTICE, I'm off to pick up CDs of those I'd never heard of.
the new edition is great.......2006-05-31
I've read the new and older edition. Both are great, though the newer edition is even more fun and informative. There's a new feature, 'Picturing Justice' that provides an analysis of how cinema art -- the direction, imagery and screenwriting -- can add an extra dimension to judicial themes. This is a welcom edition for any cinema or legal library. And it's pretty witty, as well.
A popular film guide with real substance........2001-08-24
As a lawyer, I did not expect that a book on movie trials, aimed at a popular audience, would have much substance. But I was very pleasantly suprised. The authors, two law professors, do an excellent job of pointing out the numerous errors Hollywood makes when it tries to depict a trial. (Most non-lawyers would be surprised, for example, to learn that *My Cousin Vinny* is much more realistic than *The Verdict.*) The authors' discussions go into real (but not tedious) depth about not only the errors in the way judges, lawyers, etc., behave on film, but also the mistakes scriptwriters make in creating tactics and legal theories for their characters. In addition, the authors helpfully explain what would (most likely) *really* happen in many filmed situations. Because the authors treat each movie at length, this is not an exhaustive filmography. However, all the biggies are here, and the book also contains usefully organized indexes. This would be a great selection for lawyers, film buffs, or anyone who has to serve on a jury.
If you love legal dramas you must read this book........1999-06-04
Courtrooms are the scenes of many of our greatest dramas, both on film and in real life. So it's no surprise that a book reviewing the legal and dramatic merits of dozens of law-related movies is a great read.
You learn a lot about the law through the authors' explanations of what famous trial scenes in the movies were based in actual law or not. And you get lots of insights into the making of many excellent movies.
Not only did I enjoy this book enormously, I've also used it as a guide for what movies to rent.

Book Description
Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond novels, wrote only one children’s book—and it is a classic! Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the name of the flying, floating, driving-by-itself automobile that takes the Pott family on a riotous series of adventures as they try to capture a notorious gang of robbers. This is a story filled with humor, adventure, and gadgetry that only a genius like Fleming could create.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Yes, it is by THAT Ian Flemming!.......2007-04-08
A wonderful book. I loved it as a child, and going back to read it as an adult I realize that there are a lot of things that I missed. I remember my teacher reading it aloud in class--wonderful!
The movie, although very nice, has only a superficial resemblance to the book. For one thing, it moves the time a generation or so back. For another, in the book both parents are alive, rather than Caracticus Pott's being a widower; consequently, there is no romance.
I could very well wish that a new movie be made, NOT a musical and following the original plot.
great for all ages.......2006-06-29
Just like when I was a kid at my moms knee listening to her read this to me I wsa again transported to another time. This audio is great. Kids and adults alike will fall inlove with this audio book. Some what diffrent than the movie staring Dick Van Dyke. which is always a welcome suprise.
A wonderful story for all ages.......2006-02-06
It is a charming and delightful story that you will love to read to your children. I read this book to my 6 year old. She loved it!! We both wish we could find more books about this wonderful family and car.
Not the movie--even better!.......2005-09-04
I remember the 1968 movie based on this novel fondly, but had never picked up the novel itself until just the other day. I was surprised at how different the book is. Although Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang herself is very similar in both, the plot of the story is much different. I enjoyed this simple little story, with Fleming's humorous asides, very much. Those asides reminded me of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" books I have read and I would be interested in learning if Lemony Snicket drew from Fleming's story style for his own series. This is a fun, quick story that most kids will enjoy. I do, however, fear that the admittedly crude illustrations in my original edition would not be as popular with modern children.
A Delightful Ride!.......2005-04-28
The story of Caractacus Pott, his family, and that wonderful magical car is one of the best children's stories you will ever read. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, tells a fantastic story about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the magical flying car that can even turn into a boat! It's a delightful story, filled with crooks and gangsters, and you won't be sorry you bought this fantastic little book. Should be added to every child's bookshelf. Just delightful! The book is so much better than the movie, eliminating that silly Vulgaria story. If you want to read the story Ian Fleming intended, you'll have to buy the book. You won't be sorry.

This is based on another edition, apparently now OOP........2005-01-29
When most people think of Ian Fleming, they think of "James Bond." This is the only children's book he ever wrote, and one wishes that he wrote more.
Forget the Dick VanDyke film, which has very little resemblance to the book. (Not that it is a bad film, mind you, taken by itself.)
In the film, Mr. Potts was a widower; in the book, Mrs. P. was very much alive. They pushed the time-frame of the book about 75 years, also, and (aside from using the idea of the rehabilitated racecar that could convert into a boat or an airplane) the plot had very little resemblance to that of the book.
The story is fairly simple, but is well told, rather in the manner of a parent telling a bedtime story. The author is not afraid to use big words, but he explains them. I remember at about age eight (shortly after I heard my teacher read it out loud to us in school) I used the word 'transmogrification' at home; my Mother told me that wasn't a real word, and I said it was, and we looked it up in the dictionary--and there it was! (Mother wasn't a stupid or uneducated woman; she was a college professor.)
The book could be read TO a child as young as four or five, and could be read BY a child of nine or up.

Customer Reviews:
speedy delivery.......2007-09-25
I was very pleased with the speed in which my game guides came in. They were perfect when they arrived and I was very excited to start using them.
Good, but flawed.......2007-08-18
I have read the other reviews, and have agreed with many of them. The thing i am getting pissed off about is the blitzball section. It is incredibly vague and i figured it would tell me exactly what to do in the beginning to form a great team, nor did they even think to say "formation 2,3,2 is the best strategy to score a goal, they leave alot of it out.
It is best to have it, as a refrence. But gotta say, the people who play it, IE the kids and teens across the world can form one helluva a better strategy guide then an 40 year old man EVER could. [...].
Could have been even better if the game was better.......2007-06-09
Another beautiful strategy guide, in the vein of the Final Fantasy XII guide. Big, pretty, and full of stuff. This guide spells out exactly how to get 100% completion after the walkthrough - I'm not ambitious enough for that, but I can see useful it is. The information in the walkthrough is a bit jumbled, and the superfluous charts and tables dilute the walkthrough itself, but in a way that's a consequence of the non-linear gameplay. I like the outlines of the dresspheres, which would have otherwise been difficult to get used to, and the bestiary, which includes Oversoul statistics.
What I don't like is the presentation itself. It's very easy on the eyes, but it seems like they were making the guide to be big rather than using a big guide to the fullest extent. I wasn't crazy about the game, but I'm trying to keep that from affecting my rating of the guide, because I find the book form to be quite satisfying.
Great game, guide could've been better..........2007-04-05
I tell you, I LOVE this game, but the guide is not that well organized. It provides TOO much info, without giving readers easy and clear access to the info they are really looking for. I've also found few "errors" in the guide that I have not seen in any other Bradygames guides. I own quite a few, and the guide to FFX and Kingdom Hearts were quite exceptional. Now, I understand that the game is a nonlinear game, but they could've at least put in an index or table of contents to make finding info about a particular subject easy to find. I also found a few spelling errors. It almost seems they rushed the guide. Great images and some easy to follow maps, but otherwise, you can find better walkthroughs for free on the internet.
Great guide, only a few minor flaws.......2007-03-22
I found the guide to be very useful but there were some omissions that I found to be annoying.
The Goods:
1) Complete skill list for each dresssphere and garment grid. Great info and very well-done!
2) Breakdown of quests by chapter
3) Mini-game section. Especially useful for multi-chapter games.
4) There is an index-thingy printed on each page so you know which chapter you are reading about at all times.
The Bads:
1) Accessory list doesn't mention where the accessories can be found. You have to page through the entire walkthrough to find a specific item.
2) You can do things in the game that make it so you can't get an item without being warned. For example, it isn't made clear that you must talk to one certain person in each chapter to get the "Invincible" accessory until you get to chapter 5 and realize you are out of luck...Start over or go without it.
3) Towards the end chapters the authors get lazy and stop including complete maps, so you have to go to previous chapters to find your way...sloppy.
Overall a great guide and I would give it a 4.75 if I could.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific Resource.......2007-09-13
It would be impossible to accomplish all of things you can accomplish in this game without some help. There are simply too many secret places, special weapons, hidden aeons, etc. than one person could unlock on their own. The book is easy to use, easy to understand, and put together in a helpful, comprehensive manner. You will enjoy this game even more with this valuable resource.
Well organized & absolutely essential!.......2007-08-13
Well organized & absolutely essential!
This guide lends even more playability to an already great game!
Good for getting you through the game, not for the elite.......2007-08-02
This guide book is well written at certain points, but terribly hole-filled at others. It's a great walk-through of the straight through and giving you an idea of what to do. However, if you're like me and like to completely dominate the final fantasy games, then this book won't help much more than any online walk-through guide. Now begins my rant... The original, area and species creations are merely mentioned; there is no info about the actual fiends and considering almost all of them are insanely harder than even the final boss it would have been nice to know what to expect or at least know how much hit points each one has. The guides to getting the legendary weapons are vague and not very helpful except stating where each one is on the map. There are no helpful hints on the hard events that you need to do in order to get the parts for the weapons (anyone who has done the chocobo trainer race or the lightning dodger knows what I'm talking about). In my opinion he could included tons more information and made a really good strategy guide, but it seems like he rushed the whole thing and included just what was needed to get through the game. By now there are many many guides on the internet that are as good if not better, don't bother with this when you can get the same thing for free.
Not only official, but simply the best........2007-04-12
Normally I am not one to BUY walkthrough or strategy guides but I noticed that this particular game is VERY complex and most information I found on-line just didn't seem to cut it. I was skeptical about buying this guide, but I read the more than stellar reviews on it, and I decided to get it when it went on sale.
BOY! I sure didn't regret my purchase! This is clearly one of the best reference guides I have bought in years! Simply put, the book is beautiful. The colors chosen, the map drawings, and the amazing attention to detail cannot be understated. I would have easily paid double what I paid and still I would be satisfied with my purchase.
While I thought this book is a walkthrough and left it at that, I found out that is it's much more. First of all, the book is divided into sections. The walkthrough is actually one section of the book with all key locations are given as well as where all the secret treasures lie. There is also a section describing each of the characters in your party as well as detailed information on the summonable Aeons.
But where this book also shines is that it also gives you a wealth of information that is difficult to find.
All the beasts and foes are given their own section and their strengths and weaknesses are all given in addition to their hitpoints and other vital information.
Another thing that always bewildered me with Final Fantasy X is the whole meaning and gameplay behind Blitzball. Not only does the guide explain it very well it also gives you information (again) you just can't find elsewhere. I always wondered why my Blitzball team was always losing, but then I found out that you can HIRE Blitzball players and they can be pretty much scattered about Spira. All of the capabilities of all the hirable players are given in addition to 'regular' players.
Finally, the book gives you a fold out that illustrates the entire sphere grid. There is a whole section in the book that explains the sphere grid and then gives suggestions on paths you can take each character.
Because the book is laid out in sections, you pretty much can look information up on Blitzball players, Weapons, and Beasts without giving away anything 'secret' (there is a whole section on that topic too).
The Walkthrough section is divided into a couple sections as well. One is the main or core walkthrough, then there is the walkthrough to access sidequests and also secret items.
Given the scope of Final Fantasy X AND the detail given to the creation of this book, I feel that you cannot have one without the other. Ok, if you have LOADS of time to figure out every element of the game yourself, then perhaps you can 'wing it'. But for me, I see the Final Fantasy X Official Strategy Guide an extention of the game manual and instructions.
Simply put...it is a must get. You will not regret it.
Good enough.......2007-04-06
This book definitely doesn't have everything in it but it has most. I would recommend you use online walkthroughs for the more trickier things like the bestiary or getting the best characters out of the grid system.

Hollywood deals in messages big enough to get through to the densest lummox among us. Cracks in the Pedestal ably points out how Hollywood films and television shows drive home the dominant American ideology and mirror rigid cultural sex roles in a million huge and little ways. Even when social transformations brought about by feminism crop up, the screen images are distorted. When Susan Sarandon plays a lawyer tough enough to go up against the government on behalf of an 11-year-old boy in The Client, for example, it's the bantam-weight man-child who heroically saves her from violence. When a muscular Sigourney Weaver plays the woman warrior Ripley in Aliens, her character is redeemed by a maternal streak. And God help the woman who steps out of line sexually: she's apt to be killed or unfulfilled. Frequent academic throat-clearing and sometimes pretentious prose mar an otherwise intriguing, well-argued book. It reminds us that while movies and television may be fantasy, they enforce a certain world view, beaming it nightly into our homes and around the globe.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, excellent professor.......2004-05-22
Philip Green is a former professor of mine, and we used the book as one of many texts in the class. He may have a particular style of writing that is not for everyone. However, his message opened my mind to how stories are constructed and made into the modern fables we have in movies. Green's consistent and thoroughly researched approach was enlightening and liberating, in the best senses of both words. He is also very funny, unlike some other critics of Hollywood who have some narrow-minded moral axe to grind. His critique is well-thought out, so this is not Drive-By reading. But if you want to get a mental recharge on the interplay of politics, culture, gender and the immersive media environment we all swim in, read this book.
Tunnel Vision.......1999-06-08
Although this book is very well written, Philip Green takes a very shallow perspective on the whole picture. This book will anger even a mild feminist
