Book Description

Turner Classic Movies may be best known for running the timeless films we never tire of watching, but behind the scenes is another treasure few get to see: a vast archive of posters from more than seven decades of movie making, including the remarkable collections of the great studios RKO, MGM, and Warner Bros. Picture Show gathers more than 150 of the most compelling and memorable examples for a scenic tour of Hollywood history and a dazzling compendium of graphic design excellence. From the great dramas such as Casablanca to one of the most distinguished monster movies, King Kong, to the legendary comedy of the Thin Man series, these emblems of another era speak volumes about the evolution of film, design, and popular culture. Throughout, author Dianna Edwards elucidates the historical relevance and touches on the stunning tropes of the posters, peppered with juicy bits of star-powered gossip. Including a number of seldom-seen examples, Picture Show is an introduction to great movies through their treasured posters.

Another reasonably priced addition to the slowly expanding library of movie poster books. Because it is based on the TCM archives it is very generalised and basically covers movies of the thirties, forties and fifties. The chapters are dictated by what is available in the archive so there is no collection of comedy classics, 'Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House', for instance and other light-hearted titles are included in the chapter called Battle of the sexes.

The posters are presented in various sizes and mostly you'll be able to read all the text, especially the percentage credits that usually appear at the bottom of each poster. Some of this is quite interesting because plenty of people named are complete nobodies now. Rather annoyingly the whole page posters have been enlarged a bit too much so that bottom credits are missing.

I think it is fair to say that there is not a well designed poster in the book, so no stunning Saul Bass work or Bob Peak graphics but you'll get to see the best portraits that Hollywood marketing departments could offer.

Overall a good title to have if you like poster art and if you have an interest in the thirties have a look at Reel Art: Great Posters From The Golden Age Of The Silver Screen, a huge, beautifully produced coffee-table book showing three hundred posters. A lot of MGM productions are in the TCM Archive and probably the most complete showing of this studio is in Mgm Posters: The Golden Years, with 260 posters in a very nicely designed book. My favorite genre is Film Noir, unfortunately hardly represented in 'Picture Show' but you'll find the definitive poster collection in Art of Noir: The Posters And Graphics From The Classic Era Of Film Noir.

4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK BUT WHERE IS UNIVERSAL?.......2005-07-22

The "Picture Show" is a vibrant and eclectic collection of movie posters culled from Turner Classic Movie's library of over 3500 vintage films. The book is an over-sized, soft cover reprinting hundreds of movie posters. Lesser known films may appear two or three to a page while greater classics are reprinted in full page glory. The book begins with a short history of movie posters and the explanation of "One-sheets" "Half-Sheets", "Three Sheets" etc...before breaking down the posters into several different chapters.

We lead off with "Bad Girls" and movies like "The Mask of Fu-Manchu", "The Outlaw", and "Born to be Bad". These are some of the more sexy and seductive posters found and highlight screen vamps such as Bette Davis, Myrna Loy, Joan Fontaine, and Jane Russell. From there the next chapter features the Battle of the Sexes, featuring classic films like the Thin Man movies, and the various Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn films.

The chapter on Fancy Footwork highlights those great musicals of the 30's and 40's such as "Footlight Parade" with James Cagney, "Girl Crazy" with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, and "An American in Paris" with Gene Kelly. Forward March reprints posters from great war films. "Back to Bataan" and "Flying Leathernecks" with John Wayne, musicals like "Anchors Aweigh" and "Follow the Fleet" and one of my favorites "The Dirty Dozen"

Since Warner Bros is one of the prominent studios featured we naturally get to see many of their great adventure film posters included: "The Adventures of Robin Hood", "Captain Blood", and "The Sea Hawk" as well as "The Three Musketeer" and "The Prisoner of Zenda" There are also chapters devoted to westerns and to tough guys like Cagney, Mitchum, Bogart and McQueen.

The last chapter is devoted to sci-fi and horror films including the Val Lewton flicks "I Walked with a Zombie" and "Cat People" along with sci-fi's "The Thing" and "Them!" Movie posters are very underrated as an art form and interest in collecting posters is at an all-time high. Even the reproduction market is extremely busy reproducing these posters for those of us who can't afford the originals. This is a well diversified sampling of both high-profile classics as and "B" movies. The only short-coming of the book is that it only features the posters of three studios: MGM, Warner Bros., and RKO. Classic horror fans will no doubt be a little let down that Universal's films are not included. I'm not sure why but it's a serious oversight. The horror/sci-fi section is quite skimpy overall. It would have been nice to see "Mark of the Vampire" or "Doctor X". That little caveat aside this is a wonderful book for any fan of classic films.

5 out of 5 stars Charismatic, Charming and Colorful.......2004-01-05

What a fabulous delight. Posters from American movie archives at my finger tips. Each poster brought back a memory of another day and time. The author's vibrant storytelling recalls the golden era of motion pictures. Everyone in the family has enjoyed the beautiful visual adventure and the excellent commentary. It is a book filled with a thousand memories. Enjoy, I promise it will make you smile.

This is volume 2 of a 3 volume work. Unfortunately you can't tell that from the product description unless you read the cover page very carefully. Volume 2 is 700+ pages long. I have not been able to find volumes 1 and 3. Would not have purchased this had I known it wasn't the "complete" Spitta. ("Unabridged" shown on the web site is "Unabridged-in 3 volumes" when you're able to read the cover of the book).

                    Product Description

                    - How often does each starting hand win against a specific hand or random hand? - What are the odds of your opponent holding a pocket pair when he raises? - What is the probability that an over-card will flop when you hold JJ? - How do you determine if drawing is profitable or not? Texas Hold'em Odds and Probabilities answers all of these questions and more. Every single decision you make at the poker table is in some way related to odds and probabilities. Whether you are deciding to bet, call, fold, raise, or even bluff, odds and probabilities are an integral part of the decision-making process. Texas Hold'em Odds and Probabilities covers all forms of the game, including limit, no-limit, and tournament situations. This book does more than just show you how to calculate the odds - more importantly, the focus is on how to apply odds to make better decisions. Hilger's approach shows that you do not need to be a math wiz to be successful in poker. Simple concepts and strategies that anyone can learn will have you matching wits with the top players in no time. Some of the topics include: raising draws for value, backdoor draws, facing all-in decisions before the flop, protecting your hand, the impact of stack sizes, and much more. In addition, the most comprehensive collection of Texas Hold'em charts and statistics ever put in print is provided as reference. Poker is a fun game, but it is even more fun when you win. Expert players understand the simple math behind every decision they make - now you can too. Matthew Hilger is also the author of the best-selling Internet poker book, Internet Texas Hold'em and is coauthor, with Ian Taylor, of The Poker Mindset.

1 out of 5 stars Too basic -- too little content.......2007-09-26

If you had trouble with math in grade school, then this book may be just right for you. But I personally found it was too elementary. Come on--do you really need to explain how to add fractions and how to convert 1/3 to decimals? If you are THAT math-challenged, you probably can't count outs either! By spending so much time on remedial arithmetic, he doesn't cover a lot of ground.

If you've never heard of implied odds and don't have a clue how to size your bets, then by all means buy this book. For anyone who has read one or two poker books, this stuff is too basic--and nothing is new.

5 out of 5 stars This book WILL improve your game..........2007-09-20

Unless you're a math genius or your name is Chris Ferguson, you need this book.

Top-to-bottom odds and probabilities for limit and no-limit hold'em.

Loaded with charts and explanations. I purchased this book after seeing the charts in the back of the book ... unlike any I've seen elsewhere. You can't go wrong with this book ... it's one of my top favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Good book; Great vendor.......2007-05-16

Looks like a good book. I have not made it through the whole thing yet, but I can definitely recommend this vendor.

3 out of 5 stars slow start, ok finish.......2007-01-20

This book will boggle your mind in the beginning with terms and number crunching that probably will need a second or third reading to fully digest ... That is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you don't get frustrated trying to get the the 'meat' of the book. The book gets rolling with more 'advice' and good scenarios from the middle to the end ... although the author does favor certain types of hands. I would not recommend this as a first read for a novice player, but is a good addition to gain this author's prespective on the game.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Respects Matthew. .......2006-08-15

At least all the players I know do. Matthew Hilger, as both a player and author, has been greatly admired since his very clear and excellently organized, Internet Texas Hold'em, came out in 2003. He also has a website that's very popular with a forum discussing all kinds of issues which arise in poker, gaming, and life. With this book on Odds and Probabilities, he has added to his stature as an advisor because he expands his focus by addressing limit hold'em, no limit hold'em cash games, and no limit hold'em tournaments. He actually fills in nicely for the (very few) areas King Yao does not cover in his book. Hilger's approach is ideal for beginners because he not only explains pot odds, implied pot odds, and effective implied pot odds, but also rudimentary concepts such as adding and multiplying fractions along with probability. These are the types of questions that many newbies swept into games by the poker popularity explosion may be too embarrassed to ask on their own. Hilger made a good decision by sticking with the same type of organization he had in his first book. Every idea is followed up with sections called Test Your Skills and Chapter Review. Most players, I have found, really improve by studying expert hand analysis which is something Hilger performs many times throughout these pages. Although for me, my favorite section was the one concerning probability of winning with particular hands. Overall, Odds and Probabilities was invaluable.

I play poker with the boys on Monday nights, and when we first started playing I wasn't doing as well as I wanted. In fact, I kept losing all my money to them! So I decided that I would take matters into my own hands. A friend recommended this book to me, so I picked it up here on Amazon. I wasn't very interested at first because I didn't think a book could tell me what I really needed to know about how to play poker. But boy it proved me wrong! I learned how to read my friends a lot better, and I also learned how to keep my own cool when I had a good hand (or I was bluffing big time). I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their A game, or knows they aren't that good across the board. Trust me, you need this book no matter what your level of playing is at.

So I've really gotten into Texas Hold'em lately, I play a lot with my friends and sometimes on Party Poker Net. My game was pretty good before, but this book really helped me tighten up my skills and taught me a few tricks I hadn't thought of before. My favorite tip is number 17, where he says to bet on the flop if no one else has yet. You wouldn't believe how much this pushes people to fold and gives you the pot! If you want to win every time, grab this book and carry it around like your best friend.

                    5 out of 5 stars Good tips.......2006-09-15

I got this book to learn how to play poker because I never have anything to do when my friends get together for a game. There are a lot of simple tips and basic strategies that were really easy for me to remember and follow. Book Description

Odds are part of any gambling strategy and Texas Hold'em Poker is highly predisposed to probability-based decisions. The book presents the mathematics involved in card distributions in Texas Hold'em and provides a precise account of the odds associated with all gaming events. The author is a recognized authority on casino mathematics. He is member of applied mathematics societies and has published numerous articles in leading academic and gaming industry as well as applied mathematics journals. He is also author of "Probability Guide of Gambling" book. No formal background in mathematics is necessary for reading this book, although comfort with some probability and set theory notions is helpful. In most cases, you'll need some college math to follow the formulas here, but this is not a requirement, because the numerical results are collected in tables at the end of each section. The work is packed with formulas, algorithms and tables. Its primary goal is to allow the reader to quickly find the odds for own hand and for opponent's hand, in order to improve his/her betting decisions. Every type of card distribution is tabulated in a logical, consistent, and comprehensive manner. The complete methodology and all the calculations are shown, so it teaches the player how to calculate probability for any situation for every stage of the game, even for other card games. You will find here the real odds, returned by precise mathematical formulas and not by partial simulations that most software uses. The book contains much new and original material that has not been done previously and provides a full coverage of Hold'em odds: - Immediate odds (pre-flop odds, flop odds, turn odds, river odds, odds of improving specific hands); - Long-shot odds (odds of achieving specific card formations by river) for own hand, in after-flop and after-turn stages; - Long-shot odds for opponent's hand (odds for one and at least one of your opponents to achieve specific card formations by river), in after-flop, after-turn and after-river stages; - Other odds. Concrete examples of calculations and usage of tables are attached to each section. A special chapter of examples is included for a good understanding of how to count and compare the odds for expected own card formations and the odds of possible higher formations of opponents. Such information is a must for any Hold'em player, either beginner or advanced and this book is a trusted and professional source.

2 out of 5 stars Not All That Useful.......2007-03-19

This book is all about the math. There is no strategy discussion, and it is ridiculous to think you that you would memorize all the information in this book. If you are interested in how odds are calculated, you might find this interesting. Otherwise, I am not sure what you will get from it.

there are only very long equations and nothing else!
buy this book only if u r interested in the exact prbabilities.

This book makes calculating odds more difficult than it has to be. I gave it a 2 out of 5 because of the extra confussion but it has nice tables. Unfortunately you can find similar tables with the same effect on the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and stimulating.......2006-02-07

OK, you've read the other reviews and some say the maths is beyond them. Don't let this put you off! I bought it, opened it and thought 'oops, what have I bought here!?'. Anyway - its been years since I've done any statistics or probability but after looking up a few basic principles on the net it bought this book to life. So I recommend it even if you may have to put a hour or 2 of revision in! It has improved my analysis and understanding of the maths involved with the game (and makes you realise even more how bad that last beat was!!).

5 out of 5 stars Best poker odds book.......2005-12-28

Having read many of the above reviews, it is clear that many people claim that the maths involved is far too difficult. This is not true. Yes you do have to have a reasonable understanding of maths but suggesting you need a phd is stupid. I would say that you need an average understanding of basic mathematical principles as well as a certain degree of experinece of playing hold'em in order to improve your poker from this book.

I have this book and by simply reading it, the hands you chase and dont chase change dramatically, it really does have an effect on the way you play. It covers the mathematical thinking behind calculating odds for hands but also shows the overall odds in a table.

However if you take time and study the book then you find yourself subconsiously calculating odds at the table and in turn becoming a more accomplished poker player. In time the skills and logic covered in the book become second nature and you find you can devote more time to studying the other players.

One slight drawback to this book is that when you begin to apply it to your game, it can take time to perfect it, and you find yourself not being able to concentrate as much on other aspects of the game such as positioning, table image, picking up tells and reads etc. Having said that in order to be a succesful poker player, calculating odds is an essential skill and all good poker players must experinece this difficult stage. I recommend trying the skills on online tournaments as you get to see a lot of hands without risking money. Also the quality of opponent has no say in hand odds.

Overall i would say that this poker book is the definitive on poker odds and if you aim to be a class player you need this book. Add this book to caros book of poker tells and a good strategy book (doyle brunsons super strategy 2 is my fav) and you will have taken a mojor step to becoming a truly fantastic poker player.

PS If you do buy this book beware that you can calculate the odds quickly and simply before tring it against live opponents. If opponents realise you are doing it on certain hands it will often give away what your hand really is. DON'T PICK UP A TELL AS WELL AS A SKILL!!!!!!!!!!!

In this book, the author asserts that although all stages of the game of Texas Hold'em are important, the most important stage is the flop, because of the information these three cards give to a player about "current and future handmaking possibilities". The author has developed a way of classifying flop types, and thoroughly analyzes each type.

                          Book Description

This book is about how TV makers--notably writers, producers, and network programmers--are deeply influenced by public pressures outside their craft. Many scholars assume that the relationship between society and television is one-way, that the traffic of influence moves from the content of a program to the behavior of those who view it, and that if a show is too exploitative or violent or stereotypical, it transforms the minds of those who watch it in some manner. Authors Selnow and Gilbert maintain that the one-way influence is only half-true. Even as television makes its impact on viewers, viewers, society, and society's institutions make their impact on television, often with more noticeable effect. Some of television's most influential and best known producers and programmers (including Grant Tinker, Norman Lear, Steven Bochco, and Gary David Goldberg) discuss the forces that affect their selection of themes and treatments, why they include or reject material, and how they view their opinion leader roles and their roles as members of the society that is so influenced by their products. Selnow and Gilbert examine many of the obvious as well as less apparent forces that affect content decisions: government regulations, interest groups, and advertisers. They argue that the rapid advancement in telecommunication technologies has as much to do with what we watch as any of the "social" forces. The authors look not only at the current control of content, but point toward the consortium of influences that will affect the medium as it evolves rapidly throughout the next decade.
