Home Depot must love this guy........2006-11-03
Nuts and bolts filmmaking is an excellent resource for students and no-budget filmmakers. If you're prepared to use your hands and don't mind that your rigging may not have the pro look to it, the techniques in this book are solid.
Nuts and Bolts Filmmaking.......2005-02-19
I wanted to make a movie with a camcorder I got for christmas but I did not really know where to start.
I saw this book on the shelf and thought I might get a few ideas.
Well, there's so much eye-opening information here and easy explanations, it made it easy to understand.
This is my first attempt at movies.
Some chapters were too technical for my needs, but I was able to use a bunch of the projects like "the sqeezer". I recommend this to anyone getting started in movie making.
thumbs up from a camera guy.......2004-08-12
Having worked on a number of professional films, this book is the real deal.
Clearly the author has met a lot of challenges we all face on-set. While my
experience is primary limited to the Camera Department, the author seems to
have consulted others and included information from nearly every department.
Unfortunately, there isn't much information on cinematography that I didn't
already know. Thanks to Mr. Rahmel for writing this fine book. Hopefully the
next version will include more DP stuff.
Great Resource!.......2004-08-07
A friend gave me a copy of this book as a gift and it has turned out to be one of the best gifts I have gotten in a long time. I used something from it the very same day I reveived it(it has an actor release form that I needed for a voice-over actor).
It's very comprehensive for such a small book. I don't need some of the stuff (like the art direction section), but I'll probably end up building all of the camera equipment. I never even thought of doing underwater shots until I saw the device in the underwater-cam chapter.
There is a Tips section at the end of each chapter that has some great stuff. Like the audio section has this tip about recording room tone. If I had read this tip a year ago, it would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.
The pictures are really good at showing all of the construction steps (although a few in the grip knots section are a little hard to see). I wish the title included the word "video" since I think videographer's like me will use this stuff even more than film makers.
Great How To Film Production Book!.......2004-07-25
I'm just starting to make my own movies and I am unfamiliar with constructing props and I can't believe how much I've learned already from this book already. I'm not handy, but most of the building is easy enough for me to follow. Most of the books I've read gave advice on how to shoot movies, but this is the first one I've seen that focuses on the tools and techniques for actually getting the production work done. The author gives a fantastic overview of almost every area of filmmaking...except for costume and make up :-) Very highly recommended.

Edited by a musical failure and literary fraud.......2006-02-10
Just go to the website for Laura Albert's band Thistle, conveniently linked to the J.T. Leroy site, download one of the samples, and decide for yourself if Da Capo has any credibility with this book at all. The music's every bit as bad as her writing, let alone her taste, if you can call it that. As a musician myself I am disgusted with this book and the people who are profiiting by it.
If Valuing A Hoax Should Be The Most Important Thing..........2006-02-08
No, there's nothing remotely COOL or WONDERFUL about this kind of hoax. The issue isn't about a 40-year-old woman pretending to be a teenage boy, rather the issue is about a 40-year-old woman pretending to be a transgendered, HIV+, abused, drug addicted teenage boy--and then using that persona to gain access, success, and sympathy from others. Some might love that she fooled "the genius literary elite," but that speaks more about someone's own resentment toward those who've made honest names for themselves as writers, etc.
In truth, it speaks volumes about the writers, artists, publishers, editors, and others who went the extra mile to help a young man pull his life together and get his work published and read. There's nothing cynical about creative people doing that for a person (in fact, I'd argue it is admirable that they would go out of their to do so), but it is incredibly cynical and cruel to take advantage of those intentions. By doing so, Laura Albert has probably made it impossible for a real young person with real problems and real talent to be taken seriously by those who were duped. Her sins aren't in the books or the quality of the writing, but in her intentions to shortcut her success by co-opting the problems of others who rarely have a voice and by lying to those who would seek to help those people. And, of course, don't forget she then went to incredible lengths to discredit anyone or anything that sought to reveal the truth.
In other words, real abused children feel real pain, and stunts like this only serve to avert good intentions that should go to the right places.
So judge the books on the merit of the writing, if you want. But please remember the one unerring mark of a sociopath is, essentially, that they'll try to make you feel sorry for them even as they're screwing you over.
Throw away your money and support fraudster J.T.Leroy.......2006-01-27
The editor of this book is forty-something Laura Albert, pathetic phone sex worker and con artist masquerading as a victimized street youth infected with HIV after being prostituted by his own mother. She knows as much about quality writing and quality music as she knows about the life in the streets, which is nothing. She selected the pieces in this collection. Enough said. Don't support liars and greedy publishers without principles.
What was De Capo thinking?.......2006-01-14
And the hoax of J.T. Leroy was asked to be editor because...?
Maybe next time around De Capo will return to using editors who are 1) real people, 2) respected and qualified to edit such a seemingly important collection, and 3) valued more for their insight instead of bringing someone else onboard who, regardless of whether they exist or not, is wrongly assumed to be so ultra-hip and edgy that the name alone would sell more books.
I'm sorry, but someone needs to defend this book.......2006-01-09
This may not be the best of the "Best Music Writing" series, but it's got a lot to recommend it. I don't care at all for Dave Eggers' self-indulgent books, but his remembrance of Big Country was sincere and heartfelt. If you're even slightly into Dylan, you'll find Robert Hilburn's interview with him about his songwriting process to be utterly fascinating.
As to the complaint that the collection is "rockist," appealing to only a limited music sensibility, my attitude is "So what?" This is the kind of music that seems to strike the deepest chord with most of the best music writers.
I do strongly agree that the book could have been longer. There's several dozen "other notable essays" mentioned in the back -- couldn't there have been room to include a few of them?

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Classic Treatise on Coin Manipulation.......2007-04-24
Modern Coin Magic, or the 'Bobo Book', is one of the CLASSICS of coin manipulation and deserves a prominent place in the library of any magician. Thanks to Dover we can avail of this book more than 5 decades after its first publication.
Commencing with the basics of palming, sleeving, concealment, production, vanishes, etc., this book builds on with quick simple 'tricks' to ever more complex routines - including suggestions on patter & mis-direction. Never before have I seen such clarity of explication & illustration in books devoted to sleight of hand. And there is hardly any sleight of coin manipulation that has not been covered in this book. While one can come up with one's own routines based on a thorough mastery of the 'primitives of the trade', the most famous routines of its day have also been documented to the tiniest relevant detail.
However, be warned that a complete mastery of coin manipulation is 'earned' only after hours & hours & hours of practice. This book is not the place to be looking for trivial 'self working' coin tricks (though they may well be in here).
An excellent companion to this book is Expert Card Technique: Close-Up Table Magic which is to Cards as the Bobo book is to Coins.
Overall a MUST HAVE for any budding/practising magician. Highly Recommended.
A great book to learn coin handling..........2007-01-10
This book is great for learning good old fashioned magic. There is a ton of different coin handling techniques. Trick coins will only take you so far, "Modern Coin Magic" will help you to learn the coin skills to amaze your friends and family with any coin. Of course with lots of practice.
Modern Coin Magic.......2006-07-13
This review will be simple and to the point. One of the best coin books you can possible find. By reading it, you won't just gain skills with coins. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Anyway, great book.
Where the best magic is found.......2005-10-28
You find the best magic in books.
To many magicians these days learn from videos and DVD's. While these are useful tools, book are where it is really at. The skill it takes to read a book and put it all together is what makes a magician great.
But you have to find the right books and this is certainly one of them. Every magician worth his salt should have certain books in his library and Bobo's Coin Magic is one of them.

Although this book is not really "modern" anymore, I found it to be the most comprehensive and helpful book on coin magic that I have ever read. It gives detailed illustrations and step by step instructions (unlike some other books) and is well worth the effort. I definitely reccomend this book as a great buy, especially if you have been looking around on the internet for some coin magic that you can easily learn. There really is no website, but this is a great buy at a great price. Definitely buy this book, whether you are a novice magician or an expereienced one.

Rare volume by turn-of-the-century master features detailed explanations and diagrams of numerous feats with coins — most prominent among them the author's world-famous "The Miser's Dream." Also included are scores of other fakes and sleights, including passing a coin through the bottom of a hat, the money-producing cigarette, the obedient coins, and many more.
Customer Reviews:
A good overall tome on coin magic.......2000-08-30
This book is authentic to the original Downs volume. It beautifully describes the moves and sleights. However, it also goes into the deeper philosophy of coin magic. Overall it is a good addition to you coin magic library

Book Description
F.D.R., the first politician to recognize the power of radio, appealed directly to the people for support of his New Deal. On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" broadcast brought widespread panic with its fictional newscast of an alien invasion. How Roosevelt used radio, how the news was reported, and the changes Welles caused are all detailed.
