Book Description
A cinematographer's skill can make or break a film's overall look, and yet cinematographers are legendarily reticent to discuss their craft.New Cinematographers meets this challenge, featuring the the work of six major, young, contemporary cinematographers whose vision defines the way films look today. Extended studies of each cinemotagrapher's work -- fully illustrated with stills, lighting charts and storyboards -- help show the how each translates their aesthetic vision into the actual filmed work. The book includes a detailed resource section, an annotated bibliography and detailed technical glossary.

An invaluable guide to the art of the moving camera.......2007-09-17
"New Cinematographers" is a beautifully produced and packaged book, full of insights into what goes on in the mind of some of the most creative and interesting cinematographers working today. There are sections devoted to each of several new cinematographers, and chapters on several of the films they worked on. Readers of the book basically get to look at refined notes by some of the contemporary masters of cinema (Lance Acord - Buffalo '66, Being John Malkovich, Lost in Translation; Jean-Yves Escoffer - Lovers on the Bridge, Gummo, Good Will Hunting; Darius Khondji - Delicatessen, Se7en; John Mathieson - Gladiator, Matchstick Men; Seamus McGarvey - High Fidelity, The Hours; and Harris Savides - The Game, Elephant), whose names are not as well known as the directors of the films they worked on, but who ought to be -- as this book makes abundantly clear, the body of work to which each of these cinematographers contributed bears the mark of their creative talents just as much as it bears the stamp of their directors or writers. The list of films covered reads like a catalog of all of the most visually compelling works by the most creative directors of the past decade (Being John Malkovich, Seven, Elephant, The City of Lost Children, etc.). There are pictures, diagrams, scripts, notes, all included to flesh out the process they went through in each film, and accompanied by an incredible wealth of detail about the filmmaking process, their experience with the director, their methods for planning for each shoot, their reflections on their craft, specific explanations on how they achieved some of the most interesting shots, and details about difficulties faced during each shot. Some of the most illuminating bits include some of the various reflections on how to capture the distinctiveness of particular faces, or how and why they decided to manipulate the look of a particular actor. Reading through this book is not only exciting and intriguing for me as a lover of film, but was also extremely rewarding in the wealth of insights it gave me into the decision-making process of a wide range of experts. This is an exceptional and extremely valuable book, well worth owning.
pure gold.......2007-02-01
This book is an excellent resource for cinematographers, both professional and aspiring.
Lance Acord, Jean-Yves Escoffer, Darius Khondji, John Mathieson, Seamus McGarvey, and Harris Savides all go through a step by step process of what they did to execute certain scenes. Lighting charts, set design blueprints, call sheets, storyboards, on set photography, film stills... it's all in this book. Very detailed and descriptive. In depth writing about film stocks, developing processes, filters, lights, colors... everything you could possibly imagine!
Hands down a GREAT resource, as they dissect scenes in movies they actually shot. So you can follow along while watching films such as Buffalo '66, Being John Malcovich, Lost in Translation, Gummo, City of Lost Children, Seven, The Beach, Gladiator, The Hours, and plenty more.
Definite recommendation.
a voyage through the gaffers glass.......2005-06-08
New Cinematographers is a quick, thorough, and interesting read. The information is presented in a simple way that is neither too flowery nor too sparse. Divided into 6 sections, one for each cinematographer, then sub-divided for each film that is discussed. The language is not excessively technical, so a beginner should be able to understand. It is not bland for the seasoned professional though, since a lot of the techniques presented are very non-conventional. Some of the films covered are quite different than what you will find in your typical issue of American Cinematographer, whose films seem to have a limitless budget. Especially in the early part of their careers, these cinematographers, found innovation, imagination, and hard work would go a lot further toward the overrall success of the film than just a budget can allow. Highly recommended for beginner, professional, or enthusiast.

Struss (1886-1981) was that rara avis who mastered both still photography and cinematography. Best known for his stunning camera work on F.W. Murnau's Sunrise--for which he shared the first Academy Award for cinematography in 1927--Struss was a member of Photo-Secession, an organization co-founded by Alfred Stieglitz devoted to the promotion of photography as a fine art. While Koszarski discusses Struss' contributions to the cinema, the focus of this retrospective is the artist's earlier New York pictorial work; the book is handsomely illustrated with black and white images from Struss' oeuvre, as well as his striking 1910-17 experiments in color.
Book Description
Karl Struss (1886-1981) was a master of both still and motion picture photography. A native of New York City, he first studied photography with Clarence White and soon mastered the tenets of Pictorialism. Alfred Stieglitz featured his work in a 1910 exhibition and a 1912 issue of Camera Work. Struss was also a pioneering commercial photographer, one of the first to produce photographs for magazine illustration.
After enlisting in the army during World War I, he decided not to return to New York but instead headed west, to Hollywood, where he began a new career in film, making movie stills and publicity portraits and then doing motion picture photography. His pictorial talents earned him the first Academy Award for cinematography for Sunrise (1927).
New York to Hollywood surveys this consummate artist's long career with the camera. John and Susan Edwards Harvith, who rediscovered Struss's pictorialist work in the 1970s and interviewed him at length in his later years, round out the portrait of both the man and the artist.

Missing Master Pictorialist Found!.......2002-10-08
While I admire the "straight" photography of Adams, Weston, and the Farm Security Administration photographs of the 1930's. Now that I am older, I am drawn to the romantic, soft and somewhat dreamy photographs associated with "pictorialism." I found some examples in an old book by Paul L. Anderson. Anderson also mentions a "Struss Pictorial Lens." I would find examples of "pictorialism" at museum shows. Later I found a book entitled "Pictorialism in California" with wonderful photograhps. However, this book about Karl Struss is wonderful. Particularly his still photography prior to 1918. Struss' work with night and architectural scenes are wonderful! A revelation. He didn't "do" figures well. But any photographer interested in the history of photograhy will find a visual feast. The book is well produced and high quality images. This book explores an interesting person, who for various reasons, remains almost unknown today.

Uncle Ray.......2002-03-31
Being a Grand Nephew of ray and never actually getting to meet him, (he passed away before I was born) it was great to read about the stories that were told at the dinner table by my father and his brothers. It seems that the VanNeste family loves to talk about the old days. My Grand Mother was Ray's sister Gunhild(Gunny).
When I was a child Aunt Ackey use to go through her old photo's of ray and tell us the stories.
Ackey recentley passed away earlier this year in her 90's and every one should know what a pistol she was. Thank you Russ and Bev for the wonderful job. Jim
Daredevil Cameraman.......2001-03-31
Daredevil Cameraman was an entertaining and enjoyable book to read. Swede was a pioneer in the movie business and spent his life chasing the best stories and ways to shoot them. From the decks of a luxury liner to the wings of a stunt plane, Swede set the standards for future cineography. I enjoyed reading the book both for the historical value and the insight into the life of a pioneer.

Entertaining and illustrative Puzzles for the Beginner.......2006-07-19
"Entertaining mathematical puzzles" by Martin Gartner is collection of rather easy math puzzles of diverse mathematical topics. Only an elementary knowledge of math and the will to resist looking up the answers before completing the problems.
Clear and concise comments at the beginning of each section explain the nature and importance of the math needed to solve each puzzle. A carefully explained solution follows each problem. In many cases, all that is needed to solve a problem is the ability to think logically and clearly, to be on the alert for surprising angles or hidden factors.
Here is an example of what you can find inside this book:
"If three cats catch three rats in three minutes, how many cats will catch 100 rats in 100 minutes?"
If you like more challenging pure mathematical teasers and puzzles, you may want to try "Challenging mathematical teasers" by J. A. H. Hunter.
The evergreen Martin Gardner.......2005-11-01
As most of Martin Gardner's books, this is an enchanting
collection of puzzles. No author has done a better job at popularizing and illustrating the beauty of mathematics.
Very Simplistic and Small Book.......2005-09-02
Nothing very exciting. Lot more books that are better value in this category on Amazon
A WAY TO GET WARMED UP FOR THE THINKING WORLD.......2002-03-06
I give this book five stars. Though the problems and puzzles were created several years ago, it introduces or, at least, reintroduces the reader to humorous and thought-provoking examples highlighting how intuitive and counterintuitive processes can collide into one another.
Martin Gardner's witty writing style makes this book a pleasant pathway to the realms of logic. Neat and concise with its stories and challenges throughout and with solutions at the very end, the book is a very ideal read, especially if you are a passenger with a very long trip ahead and who needs good quality entertainment that is also educational.
Mathematical problems for all ages with different topics........1997-07-27
Entertaining Mathematical Problems by Martin Gardner is a great book for all ages. This book has over 100 problems in sections ranging from topology to games. Some of the problems are simple to many, but there are some that require thought to do. Answers are included on the back. Any math lover will surely enjoy this book.
Paul Raff (Northwestern_Wildcat@ibm.net
Book Description
Martin Gardner, as the Master of Mathematical Games and Puzzles, has used his personal exuberance and his fascination with puzzles and magic to entice a wide range of readers into a world of mathematical discovery. As the author of Scientific American's "Mathematical Games" column for 25 years, he gained a large following among puzzlers, magicians, and mathematicians.
In the years since then, Gardner has continued to write articles for academic journals and popular magazines. Forty-one of those pieces, never before published in book form, are collected in this volume.
Truly a treat for Martin Gardner's many fans, the articles span a wide range of topics. They include games of chance (and why a "computer" will always beat a human player), word ladders and mathematical word play games, tiling puzzles, magic squares, computer and calculator "magic" tricks, and other mathematical puzzles.
Providing the tools to furnish our all-too-sluggish minds with an athletic workout, Gardner's problems foster an agility of the mind as they entertain.
Customer Reviews:
Gardner at his best, which is saying a lot!.......2002-02-22
It is most certainly not an exaggeration to say that more people have learned more mathematics at the literary knee of Martin Gardner than from anyone else. His columns in Scientific American and subsequent collections in book form have been an inspirational and educational experience for millions. When he "retired" from writing the column, he was succeeded, not replaced.
Since his departure from the duties of writing regularly for Scientific American, he has kept busy writing occasional articles for many different publications. He also stays active in following advances in mathematics and how it is taught in the American society. This book is a collection of many of the mathematical articles as well as some of his comments regarding how mathematics is currently taught.
While reading the book, I was once again placed in awe of his ability to state the mathematical experience in clear terms. One point follows from another with little or no extraneous fluff. There are many writers of technical books who adopt the style of adding in cutesy dialog that supposedly makes it easier to understand. In keeping with his personality, Gardner simply explains it and is done. It is very refreshing to read material in this form.
The topics are generally recreational in nature, although some, particularly those about artificial intelligence (AI) are philosophical. He dismisses the success of the chess playing computers as an insignificant special case. This is true, but he misses what should be the real point of Deep Blue defeating Gary Kasparov. The fact that it took such a computational monstrosity that does only one thing and years of programming to defeat Kasparov shows us how efficient the human brain is and how difficult it is to mimic human intelligence.
The remaining topics, such as magic squares, tiling, dissections and word play all sum up recent advances in the field. My favorite essay is one that details how to program magic tricks on a computer. The strategies used are very simple and show how easy it is to perform tricks that seem impossible.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and consider it a necessary read for anyone interested in recreational mathematics. An entire generation has arisen since Gardner ceased his regular writings and I encourage all math teachers to examine his essays for material to use in their classrooms. They are the best explanations of mathematics you can find and it has already been proven that they light a fire of enthusiasm for mathematics.

"You want my age?" said Auntie Liz
"You shouldn't ask, but here it is,
You switch its digits: that will show
Just half my age ten years ago"
The clues are there, so you can see
How old dear Auntie Liz would be.
