Excellent book that provided much comfort.......2003-11-13
As a young woman with a mother who has paranoid schizophrenia, this book was invaluable to me. My mom was missing for 12 years, and I received this as a gift not long after finding her (about a year and a half ago). It was personally very comforting for me to read this wonderful book, and I would recommend it to anyone. Ms. Holley's close bond with her mom reminded me of the bond I had/have with mine, and the inherently conflicted feelings that result from that bond.
A Must Read.......2002-10-23
My Mother's Keeper is an excellent autobiography/biography in one of a mother and daughter and their separate and entwined lives. I am a mental health RN and have been studying about schizophrenia. This book has helped me see in places I have never been able to see into before. I now have a broader perspective of schizophrenia and how families must feel also. Ms. Holley's writing is easy to read and follow. So much so, that it is very hard to put the book down. This is definitely a must read for anyone who wants to find out more about schizophrenia.

This was an exceptionally well written memoir, one that must have been very difficult to write. Ms. Elgin moves gracefully along the line between her mother's story and her own, and (it appears) honestly grapples with the ups and downs of both. Thank you.
Accurate, yet sensitive and personal.......1998-07-17
This book provides an accurate description of the development and chronic course of schizophrenia, one of the most debilitating illnesses of our time. The Holleys' sensitive portrayal of Mrs. Elgin's life touched me deeply. I thank them for giving us and honest depiction of this illness.

I fell in love with this book from the first page and couldn't put it down. The author takes you through the beginning of a beautiful singing career of her mother to the painful discovery of a life long mental illness. It truely gave me a new understanding of schizophrenia and the affect it has on family and friends.

The eyes of Bette Davis.......2007-09-29
I am not crazy about this book because it seems to be an apparent attempt for B. D. to cash in on her mother's famous name. The book describes how Bette was an unsympathetic and uncaring mother over the years and how B. D. had to "take care of her." Is this really true? I have no idea. Was the book interesting? Yes, parts of it were.
Before I read this book I was never too crazy about Bette Davis. Am I the only one that thinks she always looked and sounded so haggard and tired in all of her pictures? But after reading it I have a new understanding of Bette. She wasn't concerned with Hollywood or with all the glitz. She just wanted to be an "actor." Maybe that was what meant the most in the end.

Although I think Bette Davis was a fine actress, she obviously had a very hard time with relationships and it's sad that her daughter had to suffer. You can tell that the author (daugher B. D. Hyman) loved her mother through it all. It gives us insight into Bette's psyche.
Let Me Just Say This . .. ........2007-08-29
I love all of these amateur psychiatrists diagnosing NPD. Apparantly Joan Crawford suffered from this same disease - I read all about it in the reviews for "Mommie Dearest". No one can definitely say what went on in the home of Bette Davis. Even if B.D. speaks the truth - there are 2 sides to every story & her book would be a pretty boring read if she didn't try to stir up some dirt. I don't think Bette Davis was a perfect mother - but I do believe she loved her daughter and did the best she could. Bette was a great actress - and that would undeniably take a toll on other areas of her life so I believe that B.D. probably suffered for it but not to the extent that she claims in "My Mother's Keeper." At the end of her life Bette didn't have a vast fortune to bestow on any of her children - that is why Bette worked up until the end - she was in constant need of money. She supported her Mother, her sister, maintained her daughter Margo's care, and eventually supported B.D.'s family. B.D. needn't have waited until Bette's death for an inheritence that would never come. I am of the impression that B.D. felt the need to soil her mother's name and in the midst of Bette's illness to make a buck. I do think that B.D. should drop it already - if you go to her website she is still preaching about her controlling mother - how can you preach forgiveness if you yourself can't forgive? Why doesn't she just get on with her life already?

Well well well...B.D. Hyman--say Amen, folks! The woman who seems never to have had a real job in her life, along with her leech-like husband Jeremy--tears her mother apart with this sensation-seeking piece of muck raking.
Bette Davis was not an easy woman to deal with--I think anyone with a brain in their head could figure this out. Highly strung, neurotic, and probably an alcoholic, she was demanding to the point of torture. B.D. and Jeremy, however, b***ch and moan about what a witch she is, but still had their hands out ready to take any cash she offered. If you would like a good laugh, read Narrow Is the Way, B.D.'s follow-up book detailing how they ran away to the Bahamas when creditors started chasing them in the U.S.. B.D. now runs an evangelical ministry--snigger snigger--you can give her money--cash, credit card or check--and she'll pray for you.

This book is the tablature for most of Blink 182's singles throughout the years. I will tell you that this book is very very fun to play, even if you don't like Blink 182's music. It is quite simple, and it has that catchy sound to it. When I got this book I was quite amateur on guitar (pretty much still am), but it didn't take long to master all of these songs. Basically, all the songs contained in the book are jam-packed with easy-to-play power chords and any intros involving picking are for the most part simple.
I also enjoy the fact that as you go through a song, there will be a paragraph labeled "Performance Tip" and it will give you a hint on the fingering for a certain part of a song which is so helpful and makes things so easy. This book really advanced my skill on guitar by that one feature alone because when I try to play a lot of other songs I will remember the fingering on a Blink song and it helps with it. It's a good thing.
Another great thing about this book is that it comes with a CD featuring a breakdown of each song in the book. Most of the tracks played on the CD have a faster version and they slow it down so you can catch everything that goes on. This is also a very helpful feature. It is nice to be able to hear it slowed down because on the tabs some things look kind of confusing or don't sound right the way you try to play it and then you just pop in the CD and away you go, and if that still doesn't help, you can slow it down and take it all in.
One other neato thing about this book is that it has some background info on the songs. I learned some interesting stuff about the band and the writing of a few of the songs. It is always fun to learn trivial things.
So, in all, if you are beginning at the guitar and would like to learn some simple "punk", get this book. If you'd like to learn some classic Blink 182 songs, perfect. If you'd like to impress your friends with all those songs they used to sing along with on the radio, there you go.
Most of all, if you want to have some good old fun, get this book, I hope you aren't disappointed.

Perfect and easy!.......2003-08-20
This is the only book you will need in order to learn Blink 182's greatest hits on bass guitar. It is packed with their best songs from Dude ranch, Enema Of the State, the mark, tom and travis Show and take off you pants and jacket. It has the tab version and the music note version so you will find these songs relativly easy to learn. Just sit back put and blink album on and rock out to these tunes on bass.

Good, but Silman may be overkilling it.......2007-07-12
The principles this book teaches are indeed invaluable and may be eye-opening for the intermediate and even good player. Some are well-known and some would never be thought of by the amateur. However, it's quite time-consuming, and I'm still ambivalent about whether or not the massive amounts of annotated games and examples do more harm than good. I find the majority of the games Silman lists are only slightly and/or temporarily relevant to the themes he teaches at any moment.
Some more detailed complaints:
The biggest problem to me is that the book fails as an instructional guide in that I feel it's incomplete in many of its teachings. For example, Silman emphasizes the importance of controlling or occupying weak squares, putting your Rooks on open files and applying pressure to the kingside pawns. However, he could've done a much better job of teaching what to do once that's accomplished. "Okay, my Knight's on the e5 support point. Now what?" "Okay, I have an Alekhine's Gun pointed at the g7 pawn in front of the enemy King. Now what? That pawn's defended by four other pieces!"
The second problem is the aforementioned verbosity. Related to this is that Silman lists a huge collection of examples for all the themes he teaches. However, going through them is too time-consuming for their own good, especially because the point he stresses is only temporarily or peripherally touched by them. The majority of these examples are from real games, and I feel he could've been more straight and to the point by using hypothetical positions and playing only a few moves per game to demonstrate that point instead of making the reader play a couple of 30 to 40-move games.
A final complaint is about one of the most important features of this book: Silman's Thinking Technique. He devotes a few pages describing it and hardly touches it again. He should have made the rest of the themes he teaches more relevant to the thinking technique.
With all that said, I believe it's a good, solid book; probably one of the most quintessential for the 1200-1700 level player. If you're really serious about chess study, also purchase his 'Reassess Your Chess Workbook' to get a complete education of what Silman teaches in this one. You'll have a better idea of how to use imbalances to your advantage after working through the exercises listed therein.
Great middle-game book.......2007-03-18
This book has helped me improve my game more than any other I have ever read. It is not the proper book for the novice and it requires a lot of work from the reader.
I can't claim that I worked as hard as J.Silman requires but the time I spent reading and thinking certainly took place.
Some reviewers say that there are weaknesses in the positions and that computer analysis proves that there are better solutions than those proposed in the book. I didn't check anything with a program and don't really care to do so.
This book has given me new ways to think during the middle game.
It doesn't refer at all on the opening (although all middle games derive from openings!) and occupies only few pages on the endgame.
Overall... five stars. It's worthy.
The Best Yet.......2007-01-26
This is the best chess book I have read so far. I have read a handful or two in my life. After using this book my rating jump 400 points. Next, I am getting Reassess Your Chess Handbook and Amateurs Mind also by Jeremy Silman. I am sure they will be just as good. This is a must have book for all levels.
Important Concepts explained for the Intermediate Player.......2006-11-28
This is an overall good book covering various concepts that the author feels are important. There are a lot of good lessons in this book. Perhaps a little bit of grammer improvement and a little more clarity could be used in a few cases. I liked the part about if you have a bad Bishop to try and get the Bishop on the other side of the Pawns. The author's "How to Reasses your chess workbook" is good and I think the game analysis books, "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" and "Logical Chess, Move by Move" also go well with this one.
This is a book for an intermediate player.
BEWARE the "average review".......2006-11-26
Alright alright, it averages 4.5 stars in Amazon. But take a closer look -- how many 5 star reviews are more then three or four lines long? How many include references to material included in the book, or, heaven forbid, citations? This book has a reputation that far precedes it, and while there are certainly useful ideas in it, the book presents a very one-sided, hard-to-learn approach to chess.
When I first started using this book as a 1400, I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread; finally a book on how to play chess positionally, presented with an easy structure and presentation! Silman offers a very easy, "scientific" approach to the game by listing seven imbalances and subsequently devoting a substantial amount of time to each. As soon as I'd finished the book (or was partway through) I started to try this same thing in my games. And suprise of all surprises...it didn't work. Why not?
The book ALWAYS presents the critical position of a game, lists the imbalances, then plays a tactical sequence that is "winning" (not always, as in the Silman-Federowicz game, where black's dragon should win). There is a complete lack of holism in the examples given, and so the question of *when* to use Silman's scheme doesn't really work. Chess is more dynamic that Silman's rigid structural evaluations can hope to accomplish. There are many openings, middlegames, and even endgames that require much more sophisticated planning than seven imbalances can hope to achieve.
A personal pet peeve that I and others have about this book is how Silman almost always uses himself for examples. Once at a tournament a friend came back from his round and told us he played "just like Silman". We took a look at his score card and saw that next to every one of his moves was "!!" and his opponent had earned "??" for her moves. Jeremy Silman loves to heap his moves with "!" even when it isn't earned. It wouldn't be problematic to be an egoist, but for a developing chessplayer, all the "!" and "?" give a very false impression of how chess really is played.
Jeremy Silman is a guy that gets a lot of credit for this book because it's favored by lazier teachers and students; it tries to give an easy fix to an incommensurable puzzle. Positional chess is not always about the imbalances, and not every move gets an "!". Your opponents will not always play "?" moves and many times the imbalances will shift every single move. It is a much more amorphous entity than this book presents.
The book does deserve credit for putting together -somewhat- useful examples. You get an idea, albeit a very compartmentalized one, of how to plan in chess. It's not all bad, but PLEASE read the reviews of the book that don't focus on "this book made me into a succhess story!" Think twice about taking the easy road in chess, and replan a purchase to an annotated full-game collection by a higher-caliber player.

Great style, humor, and effective teaching method........1997-03-02
This was the third chess book I purchased in my hopes tofind a book that you could read like a book, instead ofreference. There are of course many books out there that do just this. SILMAN IS A TERRIFIC AUTHOR! I can read this book on and off, improving my chess with whatever amount of time I choose to spend on it. He also mixes in humor and a real zest for attack and foiling your opponent. Purchase other books for reference, but pick this one for improving your attack skills and "thinking on the fly".
Takes mystery out of chess planning.......1996-12-18
Can't praise this book too highly. Silman shows that each
chess position can be analyzed to reveal imbalances which
form the basis for planning how to proceed. While many
chess books have dealt with the chess theory, Silman has a
genius for identifying when the theory applies to a particular
position. Planning your next move is demystified. For each
type of imbalance, the reader is shown what must be done to
take advantage of that type of position.
This book is a model of instructional writing. The book contains
useful problems after each section, each problem with a clearly
explained answer. The author incorporates grandmaster games
and games of more humble origins. His experience in teaching
chess has allowed him to explain abstract chess theory in
the clearest terms.
For once the claims on the cover of a chess book are more
than justified. You can't read this book and not improve your
chess. It is suitable for any player beyond beginner level who
wants to be a strong player.
An absolute must buy - teaches one how to judge positions........1996-06-08
Silman goes through many instructive examples which
illustrate particular themes such as: good knight
vs. bad bishop, isolated Q-pawn, space advantage, etc.
Unlike other chess manuals such as My System by Nimzowitsch,
Silman refrains from using lofty language. Instead,
via simple and direct words, he conveys to the reader
the essence of the position, and how to arrive at a proper
evaluation. Definitely worthwhile reading for all chess
lovers.
