Book Description
For photography and film fans, a stunning visual book showcasing the latest film from the visionary director of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet and Strictly Ballroom, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregora tragicomical musical set in the infamous, gaudy, and glamorous Parisian nightclub in the late 1800s. Moulin Rouge (selected as Opening Night Event at the Cannes Film Festival) is a celebration of love and creative inspiration that brings together gorgeous period design and modern-era pop tunes to create a unique motion picture experience. Nicole Kidman plays the club's most notorious star, forced to choose between a young writer's inspiration and another man's obsession. Ewan MacGregor is the writer who finds himself plunged into this decadent world where anything goesexcept falling in love. The film also stars John Leguizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec, Jim Broadbent, and Richard Roxburgh. The gorgeous book, designed by the Bazmark production team headed by Catherine Martin, tells the behind-the-scenes story of the making of the film, and features exclusive photos taken on the set by such world-famous photographers as Douglas Kirkland, Mary Ellen Mark, and Ellen Von Unwerth. Over 250 color photographs and illustrations.

SADLY DISAPPOINTING..........2005-04-05
I bought this book at a Borders store for $40.00, thinking it would be the greatest treat I ever invested in, but I was sadly disappointed after realizing how poorly constructed it was.
Naturally, I was a big fan of the movie, so my sudden impulse was to buy this companion book. Upon reading it, however, I noticed that there were several empty spaces on where there certainly could have been color photos. Also, the section on costume design was about a page long, and did not even include a single sketch of Catherine Martin's costume designs! In fact, there was little that the book actually revealed. Pretty much all of it can be found on the extra features section of the dvd. There were very few conceptual sketches, and I was very puzzled to see many blank areas throughout the book. It seemed almost as if the creators of this book were in a terrible time crunch, and had to publish this book within a few days before the deadline.
Also, there are a series of pages that attempt to retell the story of the movie, but fail miserably. The story is all mixed up, and it ends with Satine muttering her last final breath "The show must go on." What?!? That's not anywhere near to how the movie ended, nor is it what Satine would have said to Christian. Oh well...
Still, if you really must buy this book, try getting it for the cheapest price possible. I absolutely LOVED the movie, but when it came to this book, it made me wonder how Baz allowed himself to conjure up such a poorly-made product.
I love you Baz, I just wish you could have come up with something that looked like effort was put into it!
A beautiful book for fans of the movie.......2003-02-14
This is an elegantly designed, beautifully crafted photo-documentary that tries to capture the spirit and feeling of the movie. To this end, the photography is very lush and colorful, with images taken from scenes throughout the film as well as during production.
This book is NOT focused on any of the actors; buying it based on that expectation alone will lead to disappointment. (And inaccurately given/undeserved low stars...)
Those expecting an in-depth, exhaustive analysis and detailed account of the concepts and ideas behind the film will also be disappointed. While there is commentary, this is not a book for film students.
This book makes a great gift for fans of the movie and Baz in general as well.
Fantastic Photos!!!!!!.......2002-10-17
This is a photo book for not only Moulin Rouge (or precisely, Ewan McGregor) fans, but for everyone, coz the pics are so lovely in there! We can look into the behind-the-scenes stuff of the movie, and that is so interesting! I recommend everyone to buy this book NOW!!!
A Beautiful Peek Behind The Scenes.......2002-07-24
"Moulin Rouge" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I am still blown away by the depth, intensity, and flamboyance of the film. Thus, this book seemed a necessity for me. However upon reading some of the below reviews, I was skeptical about purchasing it, but curiosity won out. This purchase has proven to be a great investment.
This book chronicles Baz Luhrmann's journey of creating "Moulin Rouge". Containing vivid and colorful pictures of movie stills, behind-the-scenes snapshots, 19th century drawings, and production blueprints, it gives the reader a tiny peek into the brilliance of the entire Moulin Rouge experience. In addition, the book contains numerous interviews with key players in the production, including the choreographers, cinematographers, stylists, musicians, etc. For me, the best part was learning so much about 19th century Paris, and learning about the actual people and places that inspired many of the film's characters.
My one complaint is, the book is too short! Much more could have been included, such as interviews with Nicole, Ewan, and other main stars. (These are however, available on the DVD of the film). I also wish that many of the background topics would have been more extensive; most interviews are limited to a page or two. I could have read chapters on these people!
Bottom line: a great buy. I am even more in awe of Luhrmann et al, after reading this book.
disappointing photos.......2002-04-06
I love the movie, Moulin Rouge is (at the moment) my favorite movie of all time. I am glad to have this book, but the pictures are very poor, almost all too dark, compare poorly to the DVD. Many others are way too small, there's a fair amount of blank space in this book. If you have the DVD, the bonus material covers most of what is in the book (on Disk 2). When I read a previous review that said "The pictures are bright and beautiful" I actually went back and flipped through the book again... virtually all the pictures from the actual movie are way too dark, the shots during production are OK, and the red print on black background is unreadable (illegible). So I'd advise you review a copy before purchasing.

the first book of American poetry I ever fell in love with.........2000-08-12
Corso in this book writes in a clear, concise language, a rabid indictment of alot of America. He is written off as one of many: standing in the line of poets behind Ginsberg and Kerouac BUT, at least technically, probably either equals or surpasses them.
This was the book that allowed me to see mid-twentieth century American poetry okay (in high school) when I wanted to write it off as a bunch of wasted filth. I've since come around to a lot more of it.... ;)
Definatley read this book if you have the oppurtunity. Well worth your effort.....
Great Poetry..........2000-05-17
This is a great book of poetry by a sadly neglected American poet. Corso is probably one of the greatest poets of the twentieth-century, and yet academics will dismiss him as a "Beatnik."
In this book, Corso steers away from grandoise language and imagery, in favor of more "clear" language and ideas. But it is powerful in its compactness indeed. Get this book, and find out for yourself.

Book Description
Joshua Davis dreams like most guys. He wants a fun career, exciting adventures, a happy wife who’s proud of him, and really big muscles that strangers can’t help but admire. Too bad he’s a 129-pound data entry clerk whose wife, Tara, has only three simple requests for their life together: direct sunlight, a dining room, and a bathtub.
Since none of these exist in their 250-square-foot San Francisco apartment, Josh sets off on a quest to become the provider his wife wants him to be. The problem is that he does it in a way that most people in their right minds would never consider: he enters the most grueling and unusal contests in the world.
In
The Underdog, what begins as a means to get Tara her bathtub evolves into a charming story of courage, adventure, and just a little bit of insanity. On the heels of a fourth-place finish (out of four contestants) in the lightweight division of the U.S. National Armwrestling Championships, Josh gets a spot on Team USA and travels to Poland to face “The Russian Ripper” in the World Championships–and Tara finds herself wishing her husband would go back to data entry. Unfortunately for her, he’s just getting started.
Over the next two years, Josh ventures to Spain to try his hand at bullfighting, sumo-wrestles 500-pound men, perfects his backward running in India and at the Golden Shrimp “retrorunning” race in Italy, and bonds with his family at the Sauna World Championships–because sometimes it takes a blistering 220-degree sauna to bring loved ones together.
By turns hilarious, harrowing, and inspiring, The Underdog documents one man’s ballsy attempt to live the American dream to the extreme.

Good, but not great.......2007-09-12
A previous reviewer compares the author's work to Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. Considering a usually successful use of self-deprecating and anecdotal humor, I can understand the comparison between the author's style and Bill Bryson's style. The author is undeniably funny. Relying entirely on the author's passion for adventure, the narrative describes a theatrical series of events fit for a screenplay.
However, that is all this book offers and why the comparison to Bill Bryson falls well short of accurate. The strength of Mr. Bryson's writing is the purpose underlying the humor, especially self-recognition through experience. The reader can internalize Mr. Bryson's experiences, see the world from Bryson's vantage and ultimately identify with Mr. Bryson's motivation for writing the book.
Mr. Davis' The Underdog falls short of Mr. Bryson's achievements. Instead of relating to narrative, the reader must watch from the sidelines. In this case the author's strength is also his weakness. How many readers can identify with first hand-experiences of bull-fighting or sumo wrestling? The effect is, essentially, a Hollywood blockbuster in a book. What you see is entertaining, but fails to stimulate any further thought.
Furthermore, and what was most disappointing to me, was the lack of conclusion. I kept waiting for the author's epiphany to explode off the pages and into my conscious, but instead of an explosion I got a series of undeveloped thoughts more analogous to a shotgun at 200 yards than a grand-finale. In the final passage, the author's last chance to tie the whole book together, he opts to wander off on a completely new tangent relating his experiences to the untapped potential of the internet (Did Wired ask you to plug The Long Tail, or was this your idea?). Instead of finishing the book with an appreciation for how this author's struggles to find his purpose in life might assist me in finding mine, I was left with questions:
Was this about the unquenchable American spirit? Or, was it about the changing definition of achievement and success? Alternately, it might have been about appreciating your own family, your talents, your opportunities, etc instead of admiring your neighbor's lawn. Honestly, I don't know.
In essence, The Underdog is a funny one time read, but certainly not deserving of such glowing reviews as it has received here on Amazon.
Crazy Dude.......2006-05-08
This author sent me an invitation to be his amazon friend. Hello! All of my reivews are bitter and sarcastic, why would I want to buy your book? Maybe I should you spam about "enlargement" products. How would you like that? The book might be a great story. Frankly, I don't care! I would rather read a book about the mating rituals of worms than me spammed by an author that wants me to buy his book.
Laugh-Out-Loud-Funny, Clever, Touching, and Relevant.......2006-03-21
From the moment I read the first three pages of the introduction I was hooked. This book speaks of and to the American spirit with humor and wit. Not only did I laugh out loud every time I opened it, but I cried a few times too. It's the kind of book that you read so fast because it is so good, but you don't want to so that it will last longer.
If you are looking for a book that inspires you through narrative and challenges you to go beyond your day-to-day life, or, if you want a hilarious window into the zany life of some "average" Americans, look no further. We are told to follow our dreams in a culture that is not set up to handle it when all of us do. This book is for us an answer to that problem. I look forward to many more insightful books from this talented author.
Giving geeks around the world hope for a better future.......2006-03-08
A quick read; fun and emotionally transparent. Our little hero graces his way through eccentric adventure after eccentric adventure, all the while proving that even the least talented among us can be champions (or at least, very nearly so). There is a tenderness in this book. In its Quixotic madness, it transports us into worlds of danger, adventure, greatness, and saunas in Finland. A true story of sporadic unshakeable dedication and glorious redemption...and courage. The Underdog clearly underscores the ideal: it's not whether you win or lose, it's how many fat guys you can yank by the g-string. A great read.
Adventurous and Funny.......2006-02-05
I think this book was funny and adventurous. My favorite part was the sumo wrestling. I recomend this book to parents and older kids.
