Book Description
We're going in. One more time. And this time we're facing some pretty mean programs—Cynicism, Obfuscation, and Postmodernist Despair—plus the usual obnoxious bunch of totally ruthless Agents, who always insist on conformity or Deletion. And just in case you were hoping to make it back, they've reconfigured the culture so there are hardly any phone booths left.
We're gonna need guns. Lots of guns. And an endless supply of logic, humor, disobedience, defiance, and argumentative tenacity.
The surviving members of the old crew are still on board, along with some new recruits, freshly located, unplugged, and debugged. Are you with us?
You've already made the choice. Now you have to understand WHY you made it.

Save your money.......2006-10-20
This is a sequel to an early book "The Matrix and Philosophy" and like most sequels, its not nearly as good.
The only essay, I thought was really good was Nick Bostrom on whether we are in a Matrix. That one by the way is available to read on his website which is well worth a visit.
Some I felt were trying to hard to push their ideas thought the movie for example one about Islam and the matrix. Well the movie came from the Wachowski brothers both who are Jews although they were certainly influenced by Christian ideals too, I doubt that they know much about Islam. The only reason I can think its the article there is to sell books to Muslims too.
Overall I was most disappointed.
Review : MORE MATRIX AND PHILOSOPHY: REVOLUTIONS AND RELOADED DECODED.......2005-08-15
[...]
MORE MATRIX AND PHILOSOPHY: REVOLUTIONS AND RELOADED DECODED. If like me you worship The Matrix Trilogy and like me you thought philosophy classes in college were the melted cheese on your favourite hamburger... this book is for you. And be aware that this title is the follow up to the equally good book called THE MATRIX AND PHILOSOPHY: WELCOME TO THE DESERT OF THE REAL both edited by William Irwin.
This book, like the rest of this ever growing collection "Popular Culture and Philosophy" series is a compilation of various essays about the subject matter, exploring the philosophy of The Matrix films under 4 different categories, called scenes. The first scene discusses the Suck-Fest or Success of the sequels, followed with Scene Two in which Freedom and Reality are discussed. Scene Three applies to the religious aspects of the films, including Vedanta, Islam, Christianity, faith and messianic symbolism. While Scene Four delves into the social political aspects of the trilogy, including race and violence.
So the book is 216 pages long, so with 16 essays, an intro and an epilogue, it doesn't leave much room to go hardcore with all the varying aspects of the Matrix Films. But what I love about this series is that they give you enough information to want to pursue it even more. So far I've read 3 books from this series.
* Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy: Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale
* The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real
* More Matrix and Philosophy: Revolutions and Reloaded Decoded
All three were quite fascinating and gripping books to read. The newbie philosophy amateur will be very comfortable reading about philosophy especially when they refer to popular culture icons such as Neo and Morpheus or Buffy. The writers, for the most part, make their arguments accessible to the novice and still grasp onto more advanced ideas which the novice could easily look up on the web or by reading other books, the many books mentioned by the essayists. And thankfully they, with the exception of Sphincter-boy Slavoj Zizek, make you like philosophy and get you interested to just how deep the rabbit hole does go.
Speaking of Sphincter-Boy, I'll dedicate a paragraph to him but mostly to the editor... Slavoj Zizek wrote the final essay of this book and just slaps the Matrix Fans around like we are all idiots.
I had a unique opportunity of sitting close to the ideal spectator of the film -- namely an idiot.
-- Slavoj Zizek (More Matrix and Philosophy: Revolutions and Reloaded Decoded (paperback), Reloaded Revolutions, p.199)
Not only does he begin by insulting the fans of the series, but also the readers of this very book. I didn't purchase this book to get called an idiot. Not only that but he lacks to make the effort to write a new essay, since this paragraph can be found in his other essay, the first paragraph of The Matrix: Or, The Two Sides of Perversion (The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real (Paperback) p.240). I often complain that philosophers can hardly come up with original thought because they to often cite material over and over again written by other, perhaps greater philosophers. But to plagiarise one's own writing is an act of laziness unfitting of a writer and or a philosopher.
So I ask William Irwin, why Mr. Irwin, why, why, why, why did you allow him to write the final essay again? The final essay that was like having to pull out just before orgasm. Just completely ruined the entire satisfaction I was having reading this book. And just like the first book, I was robbed of my Jouissance, to use a word that Zizek abused during his mockery. After reading his essay, I was frustrated. I was made to feel like an imbecile for appreciating The Matrix trilogy, I was made to feel like a cretin for enjoying and reading the very books you exquisitely edited. Also to add that whenever someone denigrates readers, especially on philosophy which many don't want to read, it won't attract the lay-people to this type of critical thought, because no one likes to feel like an idiot.
One thing is for sure, I won't be picking up books by Zizek anytime soon. I don't give my hard-earned money to get treated like a dick by some would be philosopher who can't even address an issue without referring to its supporters as idiots.
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
-Aristotle
Despite getting an Intellectual Bobbit Job at the end I give this book a 4 outta 5

Of course, I must do general course work in philosophy, psychology etc. My area of expertise is copyright infringment - movie piracy. This book has will be very beneficial in my course work. I only hope my finished work will be as good as this!
Yes You CAN Be Told What The Matrix IS.......2005-07-26
...after, of course, you see it for yourself.
The second book on the subject compiled by William Irwin, More Matrix & Philosophy is more carefully crafted, passionate and brilliant writings on The Matrix trilogy and the films' place in both popular culture and philosophical debate.
Irwin brings together an array of different -- and often conflicting -- voices in both this volume and the original book. You won't agree with all of the writer's opinions, but they'll all make you think.
And of course, inspired thought is what The Matrix trilogoy is all about, to those of us who know the films contain more than slick action sequences and cool costumes.
Irwin's newest book is further proof that we are not alone. We, The Matrixheads, are not the only ones lying awake at night thinking of these films' broader implications, and here are sixteen essays that prove it.
Go ahead, read the book. But I warn you: all Irwin offers is the truth. All 16 versions of it. Can you handle it, a bit further down the rabbit hole?
Hey, Lou!! A Sequel That Works!.......2005-06-30
Being a majorly fanatical fan of anything connected with The Matrix, I was also somewhat disappointed at first with the two sequels. So, with some interest, I approached "More Matrix and Philosophy" wondering what the contributors were going to say about these two movies.
First up, as others have mentioned, I would also reiterate that one should read "The Matrix and Philosophy" before approaching this book. Some contributors make reference to that book, and use it as a spring board for some further development of ideas. Also, on one occassion, a contributor in "More Matrix" takes a mild stab at a contributor in the first volume.
In this current volume, one is taken through 4 Scenes, which have 16 essays categorised across them. Some who contributed to the last book are back again. The essays cover a very interesting range of ideas, and have a lot of diversity among them. These include essays on faith, nihilism, God, Islamic cosmology, the Vedanta of Hinduism, race, determinism and choice, and a lot more besides. The range of topics is impressive, and kept me hooked right through the book.
For those frustrated by the first volume's repeated flogging of Plato's "cave analogy", you will be gratified to know that it is only mentioned a couple of times, and not really discussed in any detail outside the first chapter.
In general, I found that the contributors made an excellent survey of the movies, and also brought out some very interesting issues. I didn't find that I disliked any of the essays, though on some points I disagreed with them. In general, the contributions were interesting, well-written, at times humorous, and easily understood.
In this follow-up volume, I think that the book defies Lou Marinoff's idea that sequels are generally bound to fail, ("Why the Sequels Failed", in this book). I found it to be in some ways more interesting than the first volume, and wider in the various aspects that it discussed.
If you have read and enjoyed The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real (Popular Culture and Philosophy), then I really recommend this book to you. It is another book that you don't need to worry about meaty words with, and it is accessible to everyone. In short, it is a great book.

Nothing better...period.......2006-04-04
Despite the fact many have tried to "pretend" there are other dictionarys/encyclopedias that are better than The Groves, there simply are not. Sure, The Groves is not cheap, however, if you are looking for a quality work, it will never be cheap. So, whether you are a person with degrees in Music History, or someone who just wants to have information readily available on music/musicians, this is the only way to go.
Don't believe that you are getting 20 books........2004-02-29
Although the announcement makes you think that maybe yo will be getting 20 books for a song, you will be singing a different tune when it arrives. You will get one (yes, 1) volume selected apparently at random. I got volume 13.
dumbed down.......2002-05-02
Four stars for what has been carried over from the 1980 version, zero stars for what has been appended to it. We can't entirely blame the dictionary for the poor quality of most of these additions. The dictionary depends on a large pool of contributors, most of whom hold academic positions, and our academies are beset with insufficiently acknowledged problems.
One problem is the graduate-school analogue of what in secondary schools has been called "grade inflation". We might call it "degree inflation". Unqualified candidates are routinely pushed through graduate school; mediocre minds are awarded doctorates and assume faculty positions. This is partly the result of a misguided egalitarianism and partly the result of a quid-pro-quo cronyism. In any case, it is self-perpetuating and self-proliferating. It manifests itself here most obviously in rambling pseudo-intellectual essays on such empty buzzwords as "postmodernism".
Another problem is commercialization. It manifests itself here most obviously in vacuous and clumsily written (and randomly strewn with rock journalism cliches) extended accounts of various pop music figures, such as, for example, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. (Both Bob Dylan and David Bowie have composed interesting song lyrics and are worthy subjects for popular culture historians, but neither have any particular MUSICAL significance.)
The definitive dictionary of music and musicians.......1999-09-13
One could never hope for a 'compleat' dictionary of music and musicians any more than one could hope for hope for a 'compleat'library of knowledge in one publication. But, just as the Encycopeadia Britannica has come to be seen the most comprehensive summary available of knowledge generally, so has Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians come to be seen as the ultimate summary of information available about music and musicians.
The question now is: when will 'Grove' follow the Encyclopaedia Britannica and reach out to a wider audience via CD-ROM and Internet on-line services? For this reviewer: the sooner the better
Ian Bowie
The standard reference - deservedly.......1998-09-27
Discursive and authoritative, the one failing is the lack of convenient text search. When available on CD-ROM with that capability, it will be an ideal reference.

Nothing Very Insightful or Helpful, Except Section by Caro.......2007-10-03
Nearly universally hailed as the greatest poker player of all time, Brunson is the master of self-promotion. And this book is very much about self-promotion. Because it's referred to as the Bible of Poker, I've read and re-read Brunson's chapter on No Limit Texas Hold'em trying to unearth something valuable that I missed in my earlier reads. There's little hand analysis and little advice that's worthwhile, just general advice that won't equip you for cash or tournament play. For example, Brunson claims that with pocket Aces you either win a little money or lose a lot of money. He also says he intimidates players by his willingness to "go all in." Just what you're to do with the aces in particular situations or when you should be willing to shove all your chips into the middle he leaves unexplained. He provides little valuable guidance to beginners and no guidance whatsoever to experienced players.
In contrast, Dan Harrington's three volume set on No Limit Hold'em is a masterpiece. Chapter after chapter, Harrington teaches the reader how to really evaluate a hand, based on position, the competition, the stacks, the raises, the checks, and the pot odds, as well as how to put another player on a hand. With a mix of created and actual play, with descriptions of the players' styles, the portion of the tournament, and "your" own play, Harrington dissects the ensuing action. I'm already a much better player for having read Harrington's books.
Caro's chapter on tells (in Brunson's book) and poker philosophy is great, full of sound practical advice. Since I only play No Limit, it's the only chapter I found worth reading. However, you would be better off buying Caro's "Book of Poker Tells," than wasting money on Brunson's overrated "Bible."
Not as Detailed as I Expected (review for NL and Limit Hold'em sections).......2007-10-01
This book has good information for a newbie, but I've been playing poker for 4 years and it really didn't provide me with any new or insightful strategies. This was the first poker book I have ever read, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought it would go into specific details such as hand analysis, timing, bet amounts and so forth...but the details are not there...he may say, "I'll put in a big bet or overbet," but that's about it. Mike Caro's section on "tells", however, is decently insightful. Since I mostly play online, I'll look forward to applying this info next time I go to the casino. But overall, if you're already relatively versed in poker strategy, this book will do you little good.
poker made easy?.......2007-08-17
Now this is the "new testiment" of the poker books. Doyle is a very smart man and knows who to talk to about playing poker. This book is NOT for beginners. Well, worth the time spent reading (well we will see if it pays off).
Remember the Most Important Things!.......2007-06-03
Super System 2 is a very good poker book, of course everyone knows about the legendary original--at first and "underground" publication that was very hard to get. I got hooked on poker about 2 years ago (I don't play live that much due to my budget) but it is a fascinating, addictive game, and my best thing about playing for real, is you aren't playing the casino, you're playing the other players, therefore your chances overall of making some money are much better (well depending on the other players, of course)
Anyway I agree with many, in that I was sort of disappointed that the book was not more in depth on hold em; I don't play the other games, and I don't play limit. I am interested in low stakes, no limit, hold em. Mike Caro's chapter probably meant the most to me as its advise is good across the board. I would recommend this book to someone who is intermediate and interested in learning a bit about the other games, but it s NOT for a beginner and quite frankly I don't see it as that good of a "strategy" book, because most players in the casinos are not playing for the stakes that the authors are. Which leads me to my advice--remember these VERY IMPORTANT points:
1. This (these) books are NOT FOR BEGINNERS. It (they) assume you know something about the game(s) and are looking for an (edge)
2. You can't learn poker from a book. The most important thing to remember about playing live is, every player, therefore table, will be different. In most casinos you will be playing strangers and will have no idea how good (or bad) they are. All those pages about what hands not even to call to the flop won't mean anything if you are at a table full of weak timid players. And as we know a hand that wouldn't be so good with 8 players and small blinds, becomes more urgent and favorable to play, say late in a sit and go you hsve been tight and are short stack, when there's 3 players left, the blinds take 10% of your stack and you've seen 2 of the 3 players left are weak. Or, if you have chip lead and can afford to cover everyone's crazy calls, you would follow that path. That's just basics you can learn at a home game, you shouldn't need a 50 dollar book.
3. Proably most important; a lot of folks seem to be missing this: The no limit hold em chapters in these books are NOT talking about no limit hold em. THEY COVER HIGH STAKES NO LIMIT HOLD EM. When you see these programs on TV like World Poker Tour, Poker After Dark, etc; these events (usually) have buy ins of $10-$30,000! Most people (I know myself) for sure) will never be playing for those stakes. So I can tell you, if you take your $100 buy in and go to the Bicycle Club, and try to play like Doyle plays high stakes, you won't be sitting at that table long. But if you take the general advice, adapt to the other players, and play carefully, you can win a few dollars (even I've done it).
Best all inclusive book on poker.......2007-05-13
This book should be in every poker player's library. No other book covers so many forms of poker in such depth.
