Great detail and life!.......2004-02-08
I thought that this book was very well done. It told an enchanting tale of river Phoenix and his very short life. River Phoenix was one going to be a legend in Hollywood because he was a superb actor, was a reall person and tried to act like himself. The book caught my attention right away with telling about the day that Phoenix died and then it went into his mother and fathers life a little bit, then it told Phoenix's life in detail. From his first kiss to his first job to the day that he died. I thought that the book was very well done and deserves all four of the stars that I gave it. It was a quick and fun read for a biography and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about River Phoenix.
In the fast attempt to cash in on death, errors fill the pag.......2003-05-16
I suppose when someone dies or is murdered, the number of books published immediately after their demise says something about the infamous nature of the case.
This book "Lost In Hollywood" is one such case. For those of you who are not River Phoenix nutjobs, take it from one. :) This book is filled with errors. Please keep that in mind in your quest for knowledge.
You're probably better off visiting "Rio's Attic" on the internet.
From Birth to Death everything you need to know about River.......1999-02-03
Any River Phoenix fan would be amazed at the River you didnt see when reading this book. It tells all the "what the media didnt tell you". From before being born tohisdeath, learn about friends, family, and the unfortunate life of River that brought it to end. As a River Phoenix fan still, I enjoyed every word. I highly recommend reading it!
It's ok, but not as good as some other books.......1998-07-11
Let's talk about the good stuff first. The book is in depth about River's life. The author did alot of research and wrote a pretty good book. The titles of the chapters kept me going, eventhough I already knew most of the information. The pictures inside were rare and candid, sortta. I found out some new info about River that I didn't know before, but I still have to find out if the book has the facts correct. Now the bad parts. There were huge basic mistakes in the book. First they kept spelling Joaquin Phoenix's name wrong. In the beginning it was Yoaquin, then Toaquin. Second, they left out River's 2nd sister Liberty, she was born July 5, 1976. The do mention her later, but many times they leave her out. There are more mistakes throughout the book, but I'm not going to bother with them....Enjoy the reading P.S. Since this book is out of print, you might want to look for another edition titled: River Phoenix The Biography, it's the same book (by the same author), but with a different title.
A satisfying book on phoenix`s life and times.......1997-12-08
Fans of River Phoenix, and people curious about his life and experiences will find this book very rewarding. Although frequently you will also find your self angary at those around Phoenix who could have helped, but did not, this confused sole, who at a very young age was handed enormous burdons that even the strongest person might not have been able to carry. none the less John glatt gives the reader a clear view as to why this youthful and extreemly talented person, perhaps could not handle the condritictions and dichotomies of life given to him by his parents.the enormous responsibilities he had as a young teen supporting his whole family the, sexual abuse, deslexia, poor education and the pressures of Hollywood all made River Phoenix who he was. this book allows the reader to see around all the hype and sensationalismm created by the media, that followed his tragic death on the streets of Hollywood, a place he loathed, but needed. the book has interesting chapter titles and a complete listing of all his films. the photographs included could have been better, and should have been placed through out the book.

An honestly true accountant of River's Life.......2001-11-23
I would have given this book five stars except for the fact that most of the stuff in the book I was already aware of. I am a huge huge huge fan of River and love him to death. If you want to know more about River's short life, than read this book. Unlike some books about stars, this one was not full of mistakes.
This is an excellent book!.......1999-08-04
This book talked about the life of one of the best actors of all time.River Phoenix. When I first heard that River Phoenix had died,I did not know who he was. So,I wasn't very disturbed by it.But,when I found out that he was the very talented individual who portrayed Chris Chambers in Stand By Me,it was a heartbreaker to find that out.Learning that the character he portrayed would die as an adult was bad enough without the actor himself being dead. This book is a very accurate summary of a good actor.I hope you will publish this review.I only wish that River Phoenix was still alive so I could possibly meet him and tell him what a superior actor he is.When he is around fans,he treats them like people. He doesn't act like he's a supreme being,so I'd say that makes him one.
All in all, a good book to read........1997-12-08
A fairly thorough and complete book on the unuseual life and up bringing of River Phoenix, complete with an excellent collection of color and black & white photographs, sure to please everyone. the author chronicals Rivers life from his unorthadox birth in small house in Madras Oregon in 1970, to his untimely death on the cold streets of hollywood 23yrs. later. the book is factual, but sometimes lacks in, depth of information on certian subjects of his life.the author writes his story around Rivers 13 films and does a good job of developing Phoenix`s need of a father image, his conflicting values, lack of a formal education, and the continued building of his many secrets,(he smoked, used drugs, had candy bar binges, which he all denied) that seemed to catch up with him in the end, and most certinaly contrubited to his untimely death at so young an age, with his whole future ahead of him. Some of Robbs facts are slightly incorrect, like he says River was born in a log cabin, a myth perpuated by his mother, he was not. that he made 9 movies, when it was 13. and one out of context statement by one of phoenix` girlfriends ,Sue Solgot who Robb said; "When we first met , he seemed really sweet and gentle. At least he is getting some hair now. When I first met him he didn`t have any hair.".. leading the reader to beleve she ment body hair.Actually she met him when he was filming Dog fight, naturally his Marine character was closely shorn, so she ment he had no hair on his head. Other small inacuraces like this exist, but all in all it is a good book to read.

A Different Age But Still Entertaining.......2003-01-04
It may have been the turning of a different century, but it was also the turning of the era of popular song and the fledgling Tin Pan Alley industry. There are insights to music that you may remember from your childhood (March of the Toys), and comedy from the era (Please Let Me Sleep and Nobody). But even more, there are certain social issues that have changed very little over time (She Was Happy Till She Met You, I'd Leave Ma Happy Home For You) and one number in particular from English theatre that is seething with entendre (Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me a Bow-Wow). While these are not the most memorable of the era's pieces, they are well worth looking at again, and hardly a waste of your hard-earned entertainment dollars.

An informative and beautiful little book regarding Mah.......2007-06-27
This book is a delight to read and exposes the reader to a lot of snippets of information about the game, its origins, the different ways it is played etc. It is easy to read and I thought the recipes were a great idea. Any newbie or a long time player would enjoy this book. It lists many resources, does explain the American version well and is just a little jewel of a book.
Beautiful Book.......2007-02-11
I have never played Mah-jongg, although I'd like to learn one day; however, I found this book beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable. There's a little something for everyone.
Great choice for the Mah-Jongg Lover.......2007-01-11
I love this game, been playing for three years now and am hooked. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants a fun read that gives you not only a glimpse of the basic concepts, but more of a history of the game and its place in society. Excellent gift for that Mag-Jongg fanatic in your family or group of friends.
Fun and Colorful.......2006-06-13
Like Mah Jongg tiles themselves, this book is a visual and tactile joy. Nice case binding, heavy weight paper, tons of great photos. Content is excellent too with lots of history, trivia, and succinct instructions for play. This would be wonderful gift book. My only criticism is that dates in the photo captions are sometimes clearly wrong. I think the authors decided, "when in doubt, label it ca. 1923"

Great Content, Cheap Paper.......2007-09-26
Excellent, thorough explanation of both American and Chinese styles of play by today's top authority. A-plus for content. However, shame on Harper Collins for the cheap ground wood paper. This is a book I'll want to keep for years, but will the pages will be brittle and yellowed when I pull it off the shelf in a couple of years? This excellent book deserves a better, more durable package.
A British style of playing and scoring in Mah Jongg ?.......2007-08-23
I have been playing Mah Jongg for many years but have never seen a complete set of rules and scoring. It was very interesting to see these details in the book I purchased and I would hope, eventually, to contact Tom Sloper and discuss the rules and scoring that I have been using as compared with those he published.

Finally, the world's #1 authority on mahjong has written a book........2007-07-10
Until now there has never been a book in any language that provided such a thoughtful and accurate description of how to play and how to win these two popular and important variations of mahjong.
Tom Sloper is the undeniable world authority on all things mahjong. He plays in championship tournaments all over the globe, was producer of a computer mahjong game, moderates a mahjong newsgroup, and maintains the Internet's most authoritative mahjong website.
One of the best , most comprehensive books on Mahj ever........2007-06-15
Tom Sloper, who has long been regarded as THE expert on Mah Jongg, has really outdone himself on this excellent and incredibly complete book. He covers not only the Chinese versions but the NMJL version which has long been ignored by most Mah Jongg books. I especially loved the wealth of knowledge that Tom shares in the History & Appendix sections and the excellent strategy tips. Treat yourself and visit his top notch Mahj web site too.

Worst book I ever finished.......2006-10-28
How on earth did this book ever get published? The writing was atrocious. The characters were boring--not one of them a reader could feel even a smidgen of empathy with. The plot was non existant. I can't think of a single thing positive to say about this book. It was obvious the author had taken his screen play with stage directions and copied it almost word-for-word and passed it off as a novel. The only even dimly bright spot was the ending when the author admitted it was the worst piece of s--- he had ever written. Usually when I encounter a bad book, I just cast it aside. For some inexplicable reason with this one, I finished it. For that I would like to kick myself. I gave this book one star only because there were no negatives available.
fun!.......2006-08-21
Milton's book is fun and kept me racing back to see what was going to happen next between this cool group of friends. Well written, easy to read and enjoyable.

AN UNFINISHED SCREENPLAY
FIVE MENOPAUSAL JEWISH WOMEN
ONE STRANGE YEAR
For two decades, Michael Bern, a gay television writer in Hollywood, has stared at an unfinished screenplay sitting on his desk.
After attending a friend's funeral in his hometown of Newport News, Virginia, Michael returns to Hollywood and finds there is more than a screenplay that is unfinished in his life. He finally confronts what the screenplay represents - memories and stories of the sometimes sad, often hilarious characters of his past, especially his mother and her four closest friends.
Florence, Hannah, Rona, Arlene and Doreen - five more fascinating, menopausal, Jewish women one would never meet. They were friends for more than forty years and saw each other through life's triumphs, tragedies and multiple spouses. Yet, there was only one constant in their lives. On Tuesdays, they played Mah Jongg.

Not National Mah Jongg League (USA).......2002-04-17
To quote from page 6 in the book, "Rules and strategies for a so-called mixed-hand variation of traditional Mah-Jongg are presented here."
Those who are playing with the 2002 card in the National League will not find much help in rules or strategies.
Beginners guide to Mahjongg.......2002-02-15
After reading many rules of play and buying several books, in and out of print, on the subject, I found this the best for the novice to the game. It is easily read and followed. I recommend it to those wanting to learn to play.
Good introduction to the game.......1998-10-30
I bought this book hoping that it would cover the Chinese rules of Mah-Jongg, which I am trying to learn. It does, though it calls the game "traditional" Mah-Jongg. I haven't yet had time to sit down and really set out to learn the game, but this book looks like the way to do it. It has ample illustrations and goes step by step through a couple of games, giving examples on strategies.
All told, a solid buy.
