5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK FOR CINEMATOGRAPHERS.......2007-09-10

This book is a definitely must have for anyone interested in cinematography. This book goes thru all the different aspects and things that a cinematographer must know to create beautiful images. It does go into detail about video as well. But the thing is, and it does state this in the book, if you use film techniques for video, you'll come out with much better images than those that you see on those bland tv sitcoms and such. If you know the film techniques you can't do anything but improve the quality of your video. And the lighting exercises in the back are good ways to practice what the books teaches...all books on lighting should come with exercises. The only true way to learn lighting is to engage in it. This is a great book but the price is a bit outlandish.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but pricey.......2005-11-21

I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Novices.......2004-11-06

This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers. I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts. I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2000-03-29

Anyone interested in Ciinematography sholud have this book. It is full of practical examples, and the apendix is a very useful reference. Lots of information you will not find elsewhere

5 out of 5 stars no better introduction to the craft.......1999-01-28

I have had this wonderful book since its first imprint. It demystifies the art of cinematography and lays a good foundation for the reader to understand both the craft and practice of cinematography. Those who have struggled to read American Cinematographer will have no problems after reading this excellent book. Highly recommended. But why the price increase? I paid only $30 in 1992.

The title of The Digital Filmmaking Handbook is something of an oxymoron, because this thorough book covers everything you need to know about filmmaking production, from concept to screening. The only missing element is film itself.

Film and video production are in transition. Film and analog videotape rapidly are approaching the end of their technological lives, being replaced by digital videotape and digital cameras. You can buy computers that connect to DV cameras and edit DV tape almost anywhere, and they cost only slightly more than an entry-level computer. The Digital Filmmaking Handbook, then, is for anyone buying into the DV revolution who wants to do more than shoot home movies of the kids. It's for filmmakers young and old, professional and hobbyist, who want to learn to shoot, edit, and make great movies.

Unlike traditional filmmaking books, in which only the camera and some audio and editing equipment are addressed, part of this book approaches the medium from a computer hardware and software perspective. Numerous hardware issues like choosing the components for an editing workstation (chapter 5), the kind of digital video camera to use (chapter 6), selecting editing and audio software (chapter 7), and various output formats (chapter 18) are discussed. Also, there are chapters on effects, making video look like film (chapter 17), and digital titling (chapter 16).

The book never strays from speaking to moviemakers instead of moviemaking-gear buyers. Everything from preproduction tasks (such as scripting, storyboarding, and budgeting) to production tasks (like set preparation, lighting, filming (sans film), and sound recording) through final editing, color correction, titles, and output is explained. Filmmaking is heavily dependent on technology, and each of these subjects is well covered. Chapters on audio, for example, include selection of microphone types; differences between mic types; how to connect mics to a DV camera or synchronize audio in postproduction; how to control sound levels; and so on.

The chapter on editing reflects the experience of the authors. Films are understood through their own language, and how scenes are edited determines the dialect of that language. Such techniques as matching screen position, matching emotion and tone, matching action, when to use pauses and overlapping edits, and the effect of pauses and pull-ups (shortening a scene) are defined and justified.

If you can't get into NYU's film school--or even if you can--The Digital Filmmaking Handbook is a worthy reference to keep at your fingertips. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars This is the book you'll need..........2007-04-19

If you're like me, just getting started as a hobbyist filmmaker, this is the book. I only received it yesterday and glancing through the contents, it covers most, if not all of the questions I've had about certain aspects of filmmaking. It is well written in everyday english, easy to understand.
Since yesterday when I first opened the cover, I haven't been able to set it down for very long. It's that good. I highly recommend this book to any and all levels of individuals who want to learn about filmmaking from the ground up. It covers it all.

Black and white screen shots and examples throughout make DIGITAL FILMMAKING HANDBOOK a one-step resource.

5 out of 5 stars Good Description of How to Get Started.......2006-03-13

An excellent one stop guide to getting started in digital filmmaking, realizing of course, that there is no film involved.

This book starts with selecting the things like the type of camera you need to make digital video. And for good work, a good camera is necessary, and expensive. IThe book is intended for the person who is just getting started. It explains the terms, the basic equipment you will need, and so on.

The concept of making a film, no, a video starts with a story. From here you need a script. Then you do a story board to plan your shoot. If this sounds a bit professional, it is. This book presumes that you are serious about making a video. This is a rough cut at what the pros do to make a film. ==From this book alone you probably won't get to the Academy Awards show, but reading and putting into practice what the book says might get you into a commercial or a local indistrial film production.

All in all a good summary of getting started in the digital AV business.

3 out of 5 stars Great for begginners--NOT for advanced or anyone who has any brains.......2005-10-31

This book was written for people that have no clue what a computer, a video camera, or a movie is. It is written for the very inexperienced or novice--the people that should not be making movies to begin with.

But it is packed with information a 7 year old or 88 year old can understand, and it is 95% close to being accurate. I guess if one needs to start somewhere, here it is, but after reading it, please do not make your first movie to send to festivals, make as many as you can, practice, practice, practice, then get a real book. Digital Filmmaking 101, Digital Moviemaking, Independent Filmmakers Manual, and so forth before getting into the movie making world--please.

4 out of 5 stars Great starting guide and more!!.......2003-05-20

This book covers all aspects of digital film making and as such doesn't really have the space needed to go into in depth detail on every subject. Regardless, it is a great place to start. It's a very easy read, unlike a lot of film making books that assume you've already got a Masters degree in film. I wont talk much about content descriptions as other reviewers have done a good job of that already - infact, it was on the strength of such user reviews that I bought the book in the first place. I will say this though, if you haven't already bought a camera, buy this book before you do. Lack of funds may make your choices limited anyway, but you wont regret having read this book first.
I have given the book 4 stars instead of five simply because I found the tutorial sections to be a little out of place. The tutorials seem to make the assumption that you have equipment at your desposal - such as expensive lighting kits - and as I imagine that many readers wont, the significance of these tutorials will be slightly lost by the time you do actually have these items in front of you. Unfortunately I couldn't rate the book at 4.5 stars, but that is what I'd like to give it.
In closing, this shouldn't be, and if you're anything like me it wont be, the only book on digital film making that you buy, but it is definately the perfect place to start.

Digital Cinematography is a novice's guide to the art of filmmaking. Author Ben de Leeuw teaches you how to apply the techniques of traditional cinematography to the digital world. He provides an introduction to lighting tools and to cameras and various types of lenses, and then delves into explaining how to work with interior and exterior lighting, characters, motion, and color. There are a few suggested exercises, such as changing the height of the camera, animating lights, combining soft light and hard light, and working with subtle and dramatic colors. The author also includes definitions of filmmaking jargon. The book isn't platform- or software-specific. A hybrid CD-ROM includes sample digital animation video sequences used in the book.

Book Description

Digital Cinematography presents computer animators with the tools and techniques at their disposal to give their animation the look and feel of a real Hollywood movie. Starting with the basics of lighting, camera movement, and genre, the book teaches how to effectively create interior and exterior lighting, how to light characters to invoke a mood or theme, and even how to create special effects. For animators who would like to create 3D computer games, this book illustrates how to light scenes effectively as well as how to cover up modeling and texturing mistakes. This book is an invaluable guide to the cinematic art of computer animation.

Key Features
* Exercises and examples focus on the implementation of 3D, and the functionality of specific graphic tools such as omnidirectional lights, depth of fields, and image processing
* Historical reference of films photographed in the style of the tutorial, as well as images of both the process and the final result
* Cinematic styles covered include film noir, naturalism, expressionism, comedy, and cartoon
* Cinematic principles covered include key light, fill light, back light, set light, single source lighting, contrast, projection and gobos, camera lenses, color usage, composition and leading lines
* Multi-platform CD-ROM provides hands-on project files for each of the tutorials, enabling the reader to explore virtually all of the book's contents in 3D

1 out of 5 stars Avoid........2000-09-27

I've recently evaluated several better books on this topic, and this one didn't make it into my spring term reading list. The book did little beyond skimming the basics of what can be found in any cinematography textbook, and had nothing new to say about 3D rendering or graphics production. Even the author's own sample images were crude and poorly lit.

For a much better choice, consider getting "Digital Lighting & Rendering" by Jeremy Birn. Birn's new book is an amazing resource for any 3D artist, and I reviewed it on amazon with 5 stars.

Alternately, you might just pick up a first-rate book on lighting for cinematography, such as "The Technique of Lighting for Television and Film" by Gerald Millerson or "Matters of Light & Depth" by Ross Lowell (although these cimematography books don't cover any techniques that are unique to digital graphics production.)

2 out of 5 stars Promising Title, Very Disappointing Book.......1998-08-01

"Digital Cinematography" is a hot-sounding, promising title. It's a shame that title was wasted on this book.

We are all eager to see a good book on cinematic lighting and texturing techniques, so buying this failed attempt was a great disappointment. Crude, childish 3D renderings were shown, with no subtlety of lighting, certainly no evidence of "cinematic" techniques. The cheap black-and-white printing of the author's own beginner-level 3D work, and vague writing that seemed to do little more than rehash highlights from an old cinematography textbook, do not deliver a book that lives up to its description.

The author doesn't seem to have a lot of artistic talent, or professional graphics production experience, and these deficits show in his writing and illustrations.

Despite being the first product cranked out last year that promised to explain cinematic graphics techniques, the book itself is a cheap, incomplete, and uninformative attempt! . The author may be making money because of the title, but when you open the book, he doesn't seem to have much to say.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe not the best, but has some basics..........1998-02-09

After finishing the book, I have to downgrade my rating. Like others, I agree the title is promising, but the content is not "top." And I also agree with two other readers about the fact that all those basics can be found in any good cinematography book. As for the digital part, now we have other books that deal with the subject better (see Digital Lighting, J. Birn).

5 out of 5 stars useful for all users of 3D graphics program.......1998-01-27

This is a highly practical book outlining the use of lights in 3D graphics software. The ideas and applications are independent of any particular package. The explanations are lucid, and the ideas can be put to immediate use. The black-and-white illustrations are poorly reproduced, so the real appreciation comes from applying the techniques to your own images.

Successful animators- the ones who land the exciting jobs and who win the industry awards- must be more than simply a talented artist, a great filmmaker, or a skilled technologist. They need to be all three! For the first time, aspiring animators and those in the field looking to move up have a resource to help them develop this entire skill set with Exploring Digital Cinematography. Award-winning animator Jason Donati examines such key concepts as CG directing, lighting, and texturing from the three different perspectives of art, film, and technology. Beginning with a solid foundation of art and filmmaking knowledge, this groundbreaking book then translates key production techniques- including depth of field, camera blocking, and three-point lighting- into the 3D world. This unique approach bridges the gap between traditional live-action cinematography and cutting-edge 3D animation, giving readers all the skills they need to realize their full 3D animation potential.

      5 out of 5 stars speedy delivery.......2007-09-25

I was very pleased with the speed in which my game guides came in. They were perfect when they arrived and I was very excited to start using them.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed.......2007-08-18

I have read the other reviews, and have agreed with many of them. The thing i am getting pissed off about is the blitzball section. It is incredibly vague and i figured it would tell me exactly what to do in the beginning to form a great team, nor did they even think to say "formation 2,3,2 is the best strategy to score a goal, they leave alot of it out.

It is best to have it, as a refrence. But gotta say, the people who play it, IE the kids and teens across the world can form one helluva a better strategy guide then an 40 year old man EVER could. [...].

4 out of 5 stars Could have been even better if the game was better.......2007-06-09

Another beautiful strategy guide, in the vein of the Final Fantasy XII guide. Big, pretty, and full of stuff. This guide spells out exactly how to get 100% completion after the walkthrough - I'm not ambitious enough for that, but I can see useful it is. The information in the walkthrough is a bit jumbled, and the superfluous charts and tables dilute the walkthrough itself, but in a way that's a consequence of the non-linear gameplay. I like the outlines of the dresspheres, which would have otherwise been difficult to get used to, and the bestiary, which includes Oversoul statistics.

What I don't like is the presentation itself. It's very easy on the eyes, but it seems like they were making the guide to be big rather than using a big guide to the fullest extent. I wasn't crazy about the game, but I'm trying to keep that from affecting my rating of the guide, because I find the book form to be quite satisfying.

3 out of 5 stars Great game, guide could've been better..........2007-04-05

I tell you, I LOVE this game, but the guide is not that well organized. It provides TOO much info, without giving readers easy and clear access to the info they are really looking for. I've also found few "errors" in the guide that I have not seen in any other Bradygames guides. I own quite a few, and the guide to FFX and Kingdom Hearts were quite exceptional. Now, I understand that the game is a nonlinear game, but they could've at least put in an index or table of contents to make finding info about a particular subject easy to find. I also found a few spelling errors. It almost seems they rushed the guide. Great images and some easy to follow maps, but otherwise, you can find better walkthroughs for free on the internet.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide, only a few minor flaws.......2007-03-22

I found the guide to be very useful but there were some omissions that I found to be annoying.

      The Goods:

      1) Complete skill list for each dresssphere and garment grid. Great info and very well-done!
      2) Breakdown of quests by chapter
      3) Mini-game section. Especially useful for multi-chapter games.
      4) There is an index-thingy printed on each page so you know which chapter you are reading about at all times.

      The Bads:

      1) Accessory list doesn't mention where the accessories can be found. You have to page through the entire walkthrough to find a specific item.

      2) You can do things in the game that make it so you can't get an item without being warned. For example, it isn't made clear that you must talk to one certain person in each chapter to get the "Invincible" accessory until you get to chapter 5 and realize you are out of luck...Start over or go without it.

      3) Towards the end chapters the authors get lazy and stop including complete maps, so you have to go to previous chapters to find your way...sloppy.

Overall a great guide and I would give it a 4.75 if I could.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource.......2007-09-13

It would be impossible to accomplish all of things you can accomplish in this game without some help. There are simply too many secret places, special weapons, hidden aeons, etc. than one person could unlock on their own. The book is easy to use, easy to understand, and put together in a helpful, comprehensive manner. You will enjoy this game even more with this valuable resource.

      Well organized & absolutely essential!
This guide lends even more playability to an already great game!

2 out of 5 stars Good for getting you through the game, not for the elite.......2007-08-02

This guide book is well written at certain points, but terribly hole-filled at others. It's a great walk-through of the straight through and giving you an idea of what to do. However, if you're like me and like to completely dominate the final fantasy games, then this book won't help much more than any online walk-through guide. Now begins my rant... The original, area and species creations are merely mentioned; there is no info about the actual fiends and considering almost all of them are insanely harder than even the final boss it would have been nice to know what to expect or at least know how much hit points each one has. The guides to getting the legendary weapons are vague and not very helpful except stating where each one is on the map. There are no helpful hints on the hard events that you need to do in order to get the parts for the weapons (anyone who has done the chocobo trainer race or the lightning dodger knows what I'm talking about). In my opinion he could included tons more information and made a really good strategy guide, but it seems like he rushed the whole thing and included just what was needed to get through the game. By now there are many many guides on the internet that are as good if not better, don't bother with this when you can get the same thing for free.

5 out of 5 stars Not only official, but simply the best........2007-04-12

Normally I am not one to BUY walkthrough or strategy guides but I noticed that this particular game is VERY complex and most information I found on-line just didn't seem to cut it. I was skeptical about buying this guide, but I read the more than stellar reviews on it, and I decided to get it when it went on sale.

BOY! I sure didn't regret my purchase! This is clearly one of the best reference guides I have bought in years! Simply put, the book is beautiful. The colors chosen, the map drawings, and the amazing attention to detail cannot be understated. I would have easily paid double what I paid and still I would be satisfied with my purchase.

While I thought this book is a walkthrough and left it at that, I found out that is it's much more. First of all, the book is divided into sections. The walkthrough is actually one section of the book with all key locations are given as well as where all the secret treasures lie. There is also a section describing each of the characters in your party as well as detailed information on the summonable Aeons.

But where this book also shines is that it also gives you a wealth of information that is difficult to find.

All the beasts and foes are given their own section and their strengths and weaknesses are all given in addition to their hitpoints and other vital information.

Another thing that always bewildered me with Final Fantasy X is the whole meaning and gameplay behind Blitzball. Not only does the guide explain it very well it also gives you information (again) you just can't find elsewhere. I always wondered why my Blitzball team was always losing, but then I found out that you can HIRE Blitzball players and they can be pretty much scattered about Spira. All of the capabilities of all the hirable players are given in addition to 'regular' players.

Finally, the book gives you a fold out that illustrates the entire sphere grid. There is a whole section in the book that explains the sphere grid and then gives suggestions on paths you can take each character.

Because the book is laid out in sections, you pretty much can look information up on Blitzball players, Weapons, and Beasts without giving away anything 'secret' (there is a whole section on that topic too).

The Walkthrough section is divided into a couple sections as well. One is the main or core walkthrough, then there is the walkthrough to access sidequests and also secret items.

Given the scope of Final Fantasy X AND the detail given to the creation of this book, I feel that you cannot have one without the other. Ok, if you have LOADS of time to figure out every element of the game yourself, then perhaps you can 'wing it'. But for me, I see the Final Fantasy X Official Strategy Guide an extention of the game manual and instructions.

Simply put...it is a must get. You will not regret it.

      4 out of 5 stars Good enough.......2007-04-06

This book definitely doesn't have everything in it but it has most. I would recommend you use online walkthroughs for the more trickier things like the bestiary or getting the best characters out of the grid system.

        Book Description

In March 2003, during a missile strike in southern Baghdad, twelve-year-old Ali Abbas sustained terrible burns and lost not only his arms, but his family. From the moment his photo appeared in newspapers, this appealing young boy became an international symbol of suffering, and his courage and resilience touched hearts around the world. This is his story—his early life, what really happened during the bombardment, and the months that followed his eleventh-hour air-lift to safety, when he was brought to Britain for medical care. In his own words, Ali Abbas also talks about his life and future—a future made brighter by both family and strangers.
