Great discussions of the philosophy of film scoring........2007-05-13
This book is a compilation of interviews and discussions with a prominent and diverse group of composers. There are wonderful passages reflecting the philosophy and experiences of these composers that make this book a really interesting portal into their minds and lives. Often the philosophy and approach behind an artform are more important to learn than the techniques of creating it - this book reflects that.

Great, but too expensive.......2006-04-04
As a professor in a community college, I love this book and think the format is so useful! But I am switching to a lower-priced one simply because our students can't afford it. The new edition, I am sure, is even more expensive. And buying a used one, you risk the near certainty of having an imcomplete book. Too bad.
So many ways to improve.......2001-12-10
(...) It is pretty straight forward and easy to understand, BUT there are no answers for the exercises in the back of the book. My professor never asked us to turn in exercises from this book so the exercises were useless since there was no knowing if you'd done them correctly. If there were answers in the back and a companion CD with examples I would keep the book, but now that my class is over I'm taking it back for 1/2 of what I paid for it and counting my losses.

Why is a workbook so expensive?!?! This is out of range for many students like myself. I will have to forgo the class at the Community College because I can't afford the book.

The text begins with a definition of music and the components of music. The meaning of sound and time (in a music appreciation class style). The explanation of the elements of music utilized recorded cd integration into the text. Notation, staff, keyboard and lines and spaces is adequately explained. Rhythm/tempo, note and rest values are then introduced.
Exercises are relegated to the workbook which if you want a text that has a separate workbook this is good but if you would rather have the exercises integrated into the text, I would recommend Fundamentals of Music by Earl Henry.
Scales and modes are introduced next. Not just major and minor but other scales as well including the blues scale. There is an example of each written and on the audio cd. The similar work by Earl Henry is more than likely a high school level text. This text would be geared towards a more advanced than High school student as the author includes pentatonics and chromaticism (with a written Bartok example). This assumes that the student can even read accidentals and other advanced notation as presented in the Bartok example so for this reason; the high school level is to be ruled out unless you have very advanced students. At this point, the text would be for a first year college theory program or possible a non-music major class (at a larger university).
Key signatures are then introduced with all scales written on staff and then on the piano picture with the note names written on the keys. The circle of fifths and minor scales are then introduced. I like how the method brings each new concept into the forefront on an organized step by step approach.
The next section of the book introduces Harmony, Texture and Intervals. Intervals are first explained using written examples of popular melodies that include the interval being discussed.
Chords and their inversions built on the diatonic scale are re-introduced and reinforced here. This text is laid out exactly how I would teach beginning theory. At the half way point in the text, harmony, non-chord tones are introduced. There are many skillfully designed charts that are quite helpful in assimilating the information. I like how the method introduces a concept and re enforces it by using written, notated, cd and chart examples to illustrate the same concept. Many people learn information by a variety of methods and this text attempts to reach many different types of learners in this manner.
At this point in the text counterpoint, form and acoustics are introduced. While these are all valid concepts in music, I feel at this point in the theory learning process Voice leading and 4 part harmony are better choices in the progression of theory education. To introduce acoustics here makes the text more music appreciation oriented rather than theory oriented.
After this departure, Rhythm is introduced with the inclusion of many quality exercises that reinforce rhythmical adeptness. Two handed exercises are favored. The "rhythm tree" is used to teach subdivision. This is a tried and true method for learning rhythmic concepts.
Answers to questions are given in the back of the book. I do not like this as it promotes a student relying on the answers rather than digging for the answers struggling for the correct information. The answers are filled in (in the blank style) with poor penmanship and incorrect placement of note heads. This does not promote accurate work in a student.
The appendix includes the harmonic series which is not important if the text does not include voice leading and 4 part harmony. Again, I feel that these are more important techniques to introduce into a text. Not that the harmonic series is not important, just that it has it's place of importance in learning music theory and in front of voice leading is not that place.
I would use some of this text in teaching either: a music appreciation class, high school theory or first year community college but for its deficiencies, I would not use it as a sole source for any of these classrooms.

Excellent puzzles. Tough enough to challenge without incredible frustration. Great for stress reduction and keeping your mind active. Format is easy to read and the book itself is easy to use. It stays open or can be folded in half.

I must not be the crossword type. Even with 2 masters degrees, I found these crosswords to be too difficult.

The crosswords are really fun! The book is lightweight and easy to lay in your lap and fill in the puzzles. The puzzles are quite large so there's enough room to fill in the letters just fine. Great layout!

I bought this as a present for my parents because they like to do crossword puzzles together. The large print crossword puzzles make it easier for two people to work on a crossword puzzle at the same time. And, of course, the NY times puzzles are excellent.
