Interesting.......2006-11-07
An interesting if not biased look at the life (and art?) of Roger Corman. Essential reading for low-budget filmmaking.
Very interesting read for pop culture, film and business buffs.......2006-06-24
I'm not sure of how I happened upon this biography, but I'm glad I did. I'm not particularly a Roger Corman fan, having seen perhaps three or four of his films without really noticing that Corman had a part in their making.
Corman's life is interesting. Not only was he probably the most successful independent filmaker in history, he was also mentor and first-chance for many of today's leading producers, directors, writers and stars.
Remarkably down to earth and honest, Corman admits that his life has not been totally fulfilling: like many successful people, success is never enough - there's always one more challenge down the road and more than one challenge left unexplored in the past.
Corman engages in some, but not deep, analysis of his films, explains his evolving political philosophy and provides snippets that from another author might be construed as name-dropping. But Corman was there and it's his interactions with these people he's talking about, so it's not in the least obnoxious.
Above all, the value of Corman's book may not be to film buffs, but to business people, especially small scale entrepreneurs. Corman's management methods and his approach to filmaking were true nose-to-the-grindstone. He knew his market; he studied his market; he created his product to appeal to his market and he kept costs down to a minimum in order to reduce his risk of loss.
Quite a guy and his biography is worth the couple of hours it takes to read it.

You'll Understand Corman Better.......2005-06-26
To this day, I haven't seen one Corman film I've liked. Still, this book is a nice look into the world of low-budget producing. It gave me the opportunity to truly understand my disdain for Corman and AIP.
Most of the book focuses on three or four of the productions Corman is most proud of. I would have preferred him spending additional time on his more obscure films. Teenage Caveman only gets a paragraph or two written about it.
A documentary would have been a more appropriate format for this material than a book. It would have been much shorter that way at the very least. Then again, Corman always had a knack for dragging things out in his films. Ever seen Swamp Diamonds?
The main theme of the book seems to be, "Yeah, Corman's films were bad, but he did pretty good for what he had." That doesn't take away the fact that they're bad films. Don't watch them unless you have a high threshold of pain.

Good book from the king of Trash.......2003-11-12
First, this is really a 1990 book, and all information pertains to 1988 and prior. I enjoy exploitation films and this book adds to my enjoyment. Many films today are boring and darkly filmed. Just a bunch of special effects done on a computer. It's nice to know that many of Roger Corman films are still available. Maybe not at you local Wal Mart, but they do appear on TV occasionally. This book provides information to further my appreciation of what Roger Corman was able to accomplish during his life-time. Well through 1988, anyway.

Published in 1965, this is Pauline Kael's first book. It is at once her most uncharacteristic volume of essays and one of her most interesting. Rather than trace recent movie openings on a week-by-week basis, Kael here recalls classics by Ophuls, Renoir, and Bergman and comments on some of the international masterpieces of the early '60s. She also meditates on the state of the art in provocatively titled pieces like "Are Movies Going to Pieces?," "Fantasies of the Art House Audience," and "Is There a Cure for Film Criticism?" Few movie reviewers of any generation can match her wit or intelligence. And almost no one can equal her passion for an art that had such an indelible impact upon her life; Kael's treatment of Vittorio De Sica's masterpiece Shoeshine is perhaps the most intimate and beautiful movie review ever written.
Book Description
I Lost it at the Movies is vintage Kael on such classics of post-War cinema as On the Waterfront, Smiles of a Summer Night, West Side Story, The Seven Samurai, Lolita, Jules et Jim etc. Her comments are so fresh and direct, it's as if the movies had only been released last week.

For your permanent collection.......2006-03-24
I grew up reading Pauline Kael's reviews, mostly by walking to the public library in the small town where I grew up -- I'd snag the New Yorker off the shelf and immerse myself in what she had to say about movies, many of which would never come to my town. But I was enthralled.
I love her reviews now for the same reason I loved them then -- she makes me want to see the movies she writes about. And more than that, she makes me want to see movies, period. Her passion for the medium -- even when she doesn't like a film -- is contagious, and she expresses it beautifully.
Surprisingly to me, in these early reviews she frequently quotes the reviews of other critics and then mercilessly takes apart what they have said. She particularly has it in for the New York Times' Bosley Crowther, but she doesn't let others off the hook easily, either.
Kael is fun to read, even if you haven't seen the movie she is talking about. I've never seen "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone", though I have seen "Suddenly Last Summer" -- both based on works of Tennessee Williams. But Kael's 1961 review of "Mrs. Stone" is a hilarious read. In one part, she says:
"The men who filmed 'The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone' seem to think the idea of an aging woman seeking companionship and love so daring and unusual that they fumble around with it almost as much as the doctor in the screen version of 'Suddenly, Last Summer', who couldn't seem to cope with the simple facts of Sebastian's homosexuality and kept saying, 'You DON'T mean THAT?'-- 'No, it CAN'T be THAT?' -- 'WHAT are you saying?' -- 'What do you MEAN?' I assumed the youngest child in the audience would get the point before he did. By trying so diligently to make Mrs. Stone so sympathetic and understandable the director and writer, Jose Quintero and Gavin Lambert, kill all interest in her. We could accept a woman buying love, but why make her haggle over it?"
Kael is hilarious, maddening, and most of all, thought-provoking. And if you love movies, she'll make you love them more.
Pauline Kael as a prophet of our multi-media age.......1997-02-14
Pauline Kael was a prophet of the times: she knew that people would eventually be addicted to the movies. But she was perceptive enough to realize from the onset that this addiction went beyond the inescapable, because grippingly overwhelming, magic of storytelling. She understood that movies were addictive because not only do they take on a life of their own, they also created a world of their own --- cult worship, technology wizardry, critical discourse, the vagaries of box-office results, and all that jazz. These Ms. Kael grasped, and armed with her stylish wit and whip, she rallied on to the cultural battlefronts of what would turn out to be our multi-media age. This book is therefore a must-read, because beyond the disparate individual movie reviews, Ms. Kael allows us to appreciate the intellectual and moral landscape of our times. She shows us that behind things are the more important scheme of things. For her, the reel is for real. And these days, who can say it isn't so

Book Description
This guide, written by one of the foremost interpreters of early clarinet music, is intended for all clarinetists with a desire to investigate music of earlier periods. It contains practical help on both the acquisition and playing of historical clarinets, while performers on modern instruments will find much advice on style, approach and techniques, which combine to make up a well-grounded, period interpretation. Most importantly, case studies that include the music of Handel, Mozart and Brahms help recreate performances as close as possible to the composer's original intention.

A set of simple, modern methods which will enable the social bridge player to bid like the experts.
Customer Reviews:
Standard Bidding by Max Hardy.......2007-08-23
Mixed feelings. Seems to leave a bit too much to the reader's imagination. Nevertheless, an interesting, thought provoquing presentation of a system I have not previously used.
Perfect for a specific development level.......2007-08-16
This should not be your first bridge book. After you've gotten the basics and have spent some time studying the game, I found this to be a great first 'serious' book to become more than just a light social player.
I bought it after I'd read a couple of introductory books, put in some hours playing hands pretty socially, and begun to read up on more advanced concepts and conventions. I loved the game and wanted to get good (not just good enough to play casually with relatives), and it perfectly fit my purpose.
What hardy does best is to teach you the thinking and the reasoning behind the bids/conventions that he presents. You get a good idea of what exactly you're trying to accomplish at different points in the auction, and then the suggested bids make a lot more sense. I guess a drawback would be that because he devotes so much time to explanation and examples, occasionally there are specific cases which he forgets to address. In that sense it's not an utterly complete bidding strategy, but having a set bid for every little specific situation really important as a developing player.
Hardy also has chapters on competitive bidding, slam bidding, etc, which don't really require you to have read all of the preceding chapters in detail to understand them. This allows you to jump around a bit and keep the material fresh, as the chapters are pretty dense. All of the sections were fantastic, and I really feel like I'm thinking about the game much better and getting a lot more out of auctions. Nothing makes me happier than bidding games with 17 points or slams with 28 when I believe our hands line up correctly.
A master of the 2/1 and other bidding conventions.......2007-01-09
The book is called Standard Bridge Biddings, but is not suit to the standard, beginner (novice) player. To enjoy this book you have to be an advanced bridge player; a novice player will get lost right from the beginning. The book is written in a quite awkward way, and not in a clear step by step sequence, suggesting the author assumes that the reader is well acquainted with the game. Saying that, Max Hardy is well versed in the intricacy of the game, providing a broad array of bidding conventions, many having an in depth description, evaluation and analysis, especially the 2/1. I, for one, learned and enjoyed the book very much, and highly recommend it to the advanced player who wishes to improve his game.
Excellent text on bidding for today's duplicate.......2006-06-27
Hardy does a great job of explaining today's bidding for duplicate auctions. Although I have not yet finished the book, the first half is chock full of bidding help and tips that hopefully will help my game.
Excellent Content, but Strangely Presented.......2004-01-05
What this book is NOT meant for: Not meant for a complete beginner -- this is not a "Learn how to play bridge" book. This book presupposes the knowledge of terms that belong to someone that has already learned at least enough bridge to sit at a table and play (although not necessarily very well). This is a book that is more geared towards teaching someone that already knows something about bridge (and bidding in particular), and gives him/her a self-contained, complete description of the current "standard". I place standard in quotes because I consider his referring to the 2/1 system as "standard" not yet totally accurate (though perhaps before long it will be). Nowadays, at most clubs in the US, you will see a significant percentage of players, even experts, that hold to older standards.
Beyond teaching the 2/1 system, this book goes further into refining your bidding judgement. All too often we've all found ourselves saying "Hey we have 25 (or 26) points, we need to be in game! Damn why did I go down?" Or "Hey, we have only 21 points, but we made slam!", and lament that you were (un)lucky at how well/poorly the hands fit. This book does an excellent job at improving your judgement and hand valuation skills, to actually be able to anticipate when the hands do fit well, and therefore should be bid more aggressively, and when they do not well, and therefore should be treated skeptically. Also this book introduces splinters and other bidding techniques to help discover (mis)fits and further aid your judgement.
Another important point of bidding all-too-often neglected is the need for planning your rebids. Many books pretend that no matter what you bid, you will never have a problem the next time your turn arises. In reality, sometimes you need to make a counter-intuitive bid to facilitate rebidding. Also sometimes you flat out have no good call, and this book gives you advice on how to make the best of such situations. My only complaint is the strange numbering scheme used -- not worth docking a full star for, but somehow I think I ought to be able to give this book 4.5 stars for it.

Customer Reviews:
It's a Dandy!.......2005-02-08
Tim Lasiuta's book, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" (published by McFarland) is a dandy and highly recommended. It's user friendly and loaded with relevant material.
With a foreword is by George Coan, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" runs 183 pages and boasts 91 black and white photographs, a bibliography, an index and comes in soft cover. It serves as a guide for collectors of Western film, television, radio and comics memorabilia. Lasiuta, an established author and B-Western aficionado, has documented regional Western festivals and conventions, the best museums, which newsletters and magazines to subscribe to, a list of collector clubs, even which Web sites to check.
"Collecting Western Memorabilia" covers lots of ground: commemorative artwork, posters, production stills, lobby cards, autographs, books, costumes, newspaper strips, comic books, commemorative weapons and play sets, toys, games, models, lunch boxes, Christmas ornaments, magazines, movie and TV memorabilia, scripts, press packets, audio and video recordings, and cereal box premiums. Lasiuta even discusses how best to preserve one's treasures and how to get in touch with other fans, whether buying, selling, or swapping. He presents a survival guide to auctions, garage sales, flea markets, estate sales, and antique stores. As if that were not enough, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" boasts systems for ranking item quality, cataloguing guides, and format diagrams for listing and insurance purposes.
Needless to say, it would be impossible to produce a book of this scope without some omissions and a tiny bit of editorializing that might raise an eyebrow or two. Take for example the section on books. Still, Lasiuta put together a diverse list. I'm elated Lasiuta mentioned some obscure and out of print titles ("They Went Thataway" and "Stuntman").
I commend Lasiuta for acknowledging Allan G. Barbour's work ("Days of Thrills and Adventures" among others), "we lovers of movie serials, B-Westerns, or anything Republic owe an eternal debt." And thank you for listing Robert W. Phillips definitive "Roy Rogers" book.
I was surprised by the $35 price tag ($39 with postage). It would be a shame if this puts off prospective buyers because "Collecting Western Memorabilia" is a great resource. Lasiuta managed a large and diverse agenda within a modest number of pages. Lasiuta even got personal with a heartfelt introduction that demonstrates his passion for his subject. "Collecting Western Memorabilia" is a professional job all around, well organized and expertly researched. It's a great addition to a library of related B-Western books. Good job cowboy, ya done yourself proud! Leo Pando

Really Fun Book of Vintage TV Memorabilia .......2005-03-27
I don't really collect this sort of stuff but I loved this book because it brought back my childhood buying Beverly Hillbillies viewmaster sets, Charlie's Angels puzzles, etc. Contains hundreds of color photos of all sorts of merchandise: TV Guides, dolls, comic books, lunch boxes, coloring books, records, cups, all sorts of toys, etc. The shows profiled with memorabilia are The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, Bionic WOman, Brady Bunch, Bugaloos, Charlie's Angels, Chips, Donny and Marie, Eight is Enough, Family, Family Affair, Fantasy Island, Flipper, Flying Nun, Gidget, Gilligan's Island, Good Times, Green Acres, H. R. Pufnstuf, Happy Days, Hardy Boys, I Dream of Jeannie, Josie and the Pussycats, Julia, Krofft Supershow, Kung Fu, Land of the Lost, Laverne and Shirley, Lidsville, Life & Times of Grizzly Adams, Little House on the Prairie, Love Boat, Mod Squad, Mork and Mindy, Nanny and the Professor, New Zoo Revue, Patridge Family, Patty Duke Show, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Six Million Dollar Man, Starsky & Hutch, That Girl, Three's Company, The Waltons, Welcome Back Kotter, Wonder Woman. There are estimated values for the items circa 1997 but I would argue few have really gone up since then due to the phenomeon of ebay where tons of this sort of stuff is now on the market and even if you don't collect it's a wonderful look back at when TV shows really merchandised to the hilt. The guys have an awesome collection!
