Book Description
If you are new to Discreet combustion, or moving over to use this powerful animation and effects software from another effects package, then this is the book for you. It gives you all you need to know to get up and running with combustion, fast! It includes an overview of all the key features you need when starting out with simple and concise details on how to use them and how best to integrate the power of combustion into your workflow.
An ideal Discreet combustion primer for computer graphics students or professionals with some prior experience in the field of computer graphics. Learn how to do many familiar concepts such as animating with paint and layers of video specifically in combustion. This guide will provide a jump-start into the major features of the software without going too in-depth about every single button in the program. Through the use of various samples and screen captures, you will learn why an artist would use one tool over another in addition to just what the different buttons do.
Topics covered would include disciplines for motion graphics artists, broadcast designers, 3d animators, web artists, compositors and visual effects artists working for video and film based productions. People within the computer graphics industry of all sorts can take advantage of combustion because it is both a stand-alone application and also a bridge to several different disciplines including video editing, 3d animation, matte painting, 2d illustration and web design.
* Unique, fast introduction to Combustion 3, but relevant to all versions
* Concise color coverage, written by an experienced professional and trainer
* Ideal for professionals, new users and those migrating to Combustion from other compositing or effects packages

Very slim on real hands-on tutorials.......2006-07-28
Based on comments by other readers I purchased this book. For the power of Combustion I would've thought this book would contain some real-world tutorials to gain proficiency. But I found this book to be a list of features not how-to's. When learning complicated applications such as After Effects, Motion or Combustion, the learner needs to not only know what features and functions do but concrete tutorials to show you how to harness those features and funtions. I found this book to be very thin on real how-to's. For example if you want to create some particles there isn't any step-by-step instructions on creating them. A lot of information on what does what but we never get into actually creating some particles or even modifying the example files you have to download. If it wasn't for the fact that I know Apple Motion, Adobe After Effects and similiar applications I would've had a hard time trying to learn Combustion via this book. I wouldn't recommend this book if you "really" want to learn to use Combustion 3.0. I have purchased other titles from this publisher and have discovered that they are heavy on pretty pictures and colors but very weak on content that actually shows you how to use the applications. If you really want to learn Combustion don't buy this book. If you want a book with a lot of pictures with tips then this is for you. Very disapppointed based on comments by others.
Want to learn combustion, just grab this book.......2005-07-27
Well i was the first time user to Discreet combustion when i purchased this book and i found it very useful as a starter to the software. This book starts with the chapter to set preferences in the software and then the interface in depth, later on this book will make you understand the main operators of combustion (Particles, paint, text, edit, composite) quite easily, though all the operators are not discussed in the book such as channels, RE vision plugins used for morphing. Gary Davis knows where u can make mistakes and he pointed out that quite well. I found it "easy to follow" kind of book. If anyone who has passed the intermediate level of combustion and advancing to higher level then they should not opt for this book, as this book lacks in profesional techniques kind of theory. Overall this book is designed for Beginers and people at intermediate level of the software. I recommened this book 100%.
A fantastic book that will ramp you up quickly........2005-05-28
Even though I am using combustion 4 this book is still the best learning resource available. The information is well written, no wordy blurbs, and the quality of the pages and all-color photos is fantastic. The only area from this book that's not going to apply to c4 is the discreet keyer because it has changed in since c3.
By combining this book with the wide array of tutorials from discreet's web site it is all the learning material you will need. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to truly grasp the ins and outs of combustion! A+
The Mighty Combustion.......2005-03-15
Discreet Combustion is a great program and this book is a great way to learn it. You can either buy this book for $20 or go take a class for several hundred, chances are you will learn about the same amount either way. The combustion particle system is nothing short of amazing and surely is among the top 2 or 3 on the market. The Paint operator is very high quality and fun to work in. The Edit operator is a simple, yet powerfully effective NLE module that will suit you just fine unless you are a hardcore video editor that demands every feature. The Discreet Color Corrector and Discreet Keyer and Tracker are outstanding tools you can use to take your work to higher levels, and finally the animation tools and expression operations take your animations where they need to go. Sounds like alot and it is, and there is a bit of a learning curve to this combustion, but this book will fuse it all together for you with no-nonsense and very readable text, as well as many superior and well-thought-out chapter workspace files that augment the readings and burn your brain with the knowledge. The author put some time and effort into making this manual, and it shows. A true "steal" for $20. The cover says for new users and pros, and I agree that both types of people can easily benefit from the reading. If you have some prior compositing knowledge with After Effects or Commotion, it will certianly help alot, it will also help if you have used some of the other Discreet products as many of their packages have "global similarities." This book would also be good for a complete beginner, although you probably should read it cover to cover twice if you are serious about practical usage. Also worth noting is that unless you like to read dry, bland, offical user's manuals that ship with software programs, there are currently only this book and one other available on this topic of combustion that I have came across, and the other book has been shredded like cabbage for coleslaw by critics here at amazon. Can't miss manual, buy it and study it!
Greatest book so far!.......2005-03-05
This is a great book if you want to become a pro in a second!
The book is highly illustrated in color, the explanations are short and the book has a lot of pictures.
The best so far!
Book Description
This book offers new interpretations of many of Bach's late compositions which include complex musical techniques such as canon. These techniques held great significance for Bach and his contemporaries not only on account of the great skill they demanded but because of the meanings attached to them. Intricate musical devices were crucial to the Lutheran rituals of death and dying, to alchemy, to Enlightenment philosophies of stylistic change and musical progress, to musical representations of political power, and to the legacy of Bach into our own time.

Finally someone who fully understands counterpoint!.......2007-09-26
Truly an excellent study of the meaning behind Bach's use of counterpoint in his treatises on Harmony, Counterpoint, and Fugue. David Yarsley's insightful understanding of tonal counterpoint and how it functions, in conjunction with his great historical perspective, allows him to draw some very interesting and useful conclusions on Bach's works. For example his explanation of Crab Cannon is about as good as it gets and clearly shows his mastery of the material at hand. This book is a must read for any serious composer or lover of Bach.
Book Description
This informative book teaches writing and understanding Baroque counterpoint. Unique in approach, BaroqueCounterpoint uses extensive quotations and examples from contemporaneous treatises; the authors explain the principles underlying the compositional techniques of the period, introducing readers to the widest range of composers of any of the books on the market today. It emphasizes singing and improvisation as well as writing.
The book is divided into two comprehensive parts, the strict style and the free style. Step-by-step exercises lead to writing fugue, the apotheosis of Western music.
An excellent desk reference for musicians and composers.
Book Description
Malcolm Boyd's lucid text investigates how often various chords and progressions occur, in what contexts and (where possible) for what reasons. Following methods known to have been adopted by Bach himself, the exercises are graded in such a way as to encourage the student to develop both technique and imagination within a closely defined framework.

Makes some helpful observations.......2006-07-11
As a music student who was looking for a good resource to better understand Bach's style, I decided to pick up this book. I found it made many helpful observations that aided in my understanding of Bach's style in his chorales and instrumental music (i.e. favored progressions, voice leading). It is designed for students who have already studied Harmony (and Counterpoint for the second half of the book) and who require more detail on what Bach would or would not have done in different situations. Exercises are also provided, starting with an existing soprano and bass part where the student adds the alto and tenor, followed by many more where only the soprano is provided and the student adds the three other voices. As there are so many different ways to harmonize a melody, answers are not provided, and a teacher will be required to correct the work.
The quibble that prevents this book from getting 4 or 5 stars in this review is that there is no included Bach Anthology. I had hoped for the price that there would at least be some chorales and some Bach keyboard pieces for harmonic and countrapuntal analysis. In fact the book makes the point that the reader should analyse several Bach chorales before even attempting the given exercises, yet there are none included in the book. Also several examples say things like "see chorale no 19 measure 10 for an example of this". Therefore, in order for this book to be of use, you'll need to also purchase Bach's 371 chorales for the first half and his 2-part inventions and 3-part sinfonias for the second half.

Book Description
Sixteenth-Century Counterpoint uses a workbook format to present a comprehensive and practical introduction to counterpoint. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, each chapter begins with paired 'Process' and 'Resources' sections. In each Process section, students are provided with the definition and explanation of a counterpoint element (Melody, Voice Motion, Dissonant Vertical Intervals, etc...). The paired Resources sections are a discussion of the musical principles, rules, and constraints required for each Process. Part Two is a direct approach to free composition.

Wondering which breeds are in here?.......2007-06-27
I bought this book hoping there would be a picture of a weim or a similar breed. I got lucky, there is a weim! It does look incredibly easy to follow, but I know what dog lovers want to know: is MY breed in there? so here's a list:
The book is divided into "groups". The Hound group has Afghan, Basenji (sitting), Basset, Beagle, Black & Tan, Bloodhound (sitting), Borzoi, Dachshund (smooth), Greyhound (running), Irish Wolfhound (running). The Terrier group has Airedale, Bedlington, Bull Terrier, Cairn, Dandie Dinmont, Wire Fox, Kerry Blue, Scottish, Sealyham & a Westie (sitting). The Working group is actually the CKC working & herding combined, and has Malamute, Boxer (running), Rough Collie (running), Doberman (play bow), GSD (head shot), Great Dane, Mastiff, OES, Corgi (Pembroke), St. Bernard (lying down), Samoyed, Sheltie, Standard Schnauzer. The Sporting has Cocker (looks like American, is "sitting pretty"), English Setter (head shot), Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer, Weim. The Irish, Pointer & Weim are on point. The Non-sporting includes the Toy breeds: Bichon, Boster Terrier, Bulldog, Chow, Dalmatian (sitting), Lhasa Apso, Standard Poodle (continental cut I think), Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pug, Yorkie. All the breeds which can have cropped or natural ears have cropped ears in these drawings.
Dog Lines .......2007-04-08
This was the ideal book for me! Thanks to this book, I can draw better than I ever imagined possible!
Ames' provides good, clear instructions. Beagles, basenjis, bulldogs and Germans shepherds are fun to draw. Any dog with a curly tail is fun to draw. Readers are also treated to a brief history of each breed on the bottom of each page.
Now, I wish there was a book (or maybe there is and I just don't know about them) of drawing classic cars. How to draw a 1964 Ford Falcon - how cool is that!
"Draw 50 Dogs" of the terrific Draw 50 series.......2002-10-13
I must admit that for me it takes a bit of work to draw realistic and 3 dimensional pictures. But using the 'Draw 50' books are so very, very easy to use! Lee J. Ames's drawing method is simple with the step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow. For kids 9 and older, "Draw 50 Dogs" by Lee J. Ames is great for drawing in your scrapbook, onto your notebooks, on cards, etc.
As the title says, this book includes instructions to draw 50 dogs; all of the 50 are different breeds and types. For me I love the portraits though I also love to draw dogs running or posing. My favorite pictures to draw are most probably the 'Irish Wolfhound', 'Cairn Terrier', 'German Shepherd Dog', 'Cocker Spaniel', and 'English Setter'. The book has another nice touch which is at the bottom of each drawing, there is some information on that dog including a brief history of the breed, average weight and height of the dog, and coat and color of the dog. Extremely helpful especially if you are thinking of coloring your drawing afterwards or would like to know how big to draw the dog when putting it in a background. My only complaint that there isn't a picture of a papillon to draw which I would like to (the reason? I have a papillon for a pet!).
Of course all of the "Draw 50" series are great, be sure to check them all out! The books I want are "Draw 50 Athletes", "Draw 50 Cats", "Draw 50 Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles", and "Draw 50 Famous Faces".
Great book.......2000-12-27
I agree with the other reviews, this is a great book in the series. If you have an interest in drawing or know someone who does, you'll find these books to be very useful. My daughter had brought some home from the library & asked for me to buy them. They go step by step with you,in no time you'll have a wonderful picture!
