Customer Reviews:
Obviously a great book, but wrong topic.......2006-10-03
I love movies. I love to criticize movies. But I really just want to share my criticism with my friends, and I really don't care to be eloquent about it. Take the movie "Four Brothers" for instance. My review would run something like this: "WTF??? I gotta see that again!"
Now, if Christopher Null had written about how to become a food critic, I'd be all over that. I wonder if it would work to just replace words like "film" and "movie" with "food" and "eats", or "actor" and "actress" with "meat" and "potatoes". But then I would have to come up with all kinds of substitutes, and that would get complicated. Would I pick "flambe" or "brussel sprout" to replace "director", "chef" or "gourmet" for "producer", or "curry" or "whip cream" for "writer"? No I guess it wouldn't work.
Hopefully, Mr. Null has a food critic friend who will write a similarly great book entitled "Five Stars! How to Become a Food Critic, The Galaxy's Greatest Job." Let's face it, film critiquing may be great, but food critiquing, what could be better than eating for a living?
The definitive book on movies and being a film critic.......2005-10-04
Other reviewers have gone into great detail about what's in this book so I won't repeat their efforts. Simply put, this book is written by a critic, Christopher Null, which knows movies and can put that knowledge on paper in an informative and still entertaining way. Each point he makes in this book includes at least one movie as an example and it's obvious by the movie titles he lists that he has watched thousands of them. This is a must buy for anyone that wants to be a film critic (or already believe they are one) and a highly recommended purchase for those of you, like me, that simply love watching movies.
kudos.......2005-08-17
normally, i wouldn't want to be a film critic but christopher null makes you really think about it. a great critic...he's interesting and inventive--and has an appreciation for the out of the ordinary... just check out his wacky website. [...]

What other rating could you give it?.......2005-07-02
"Five Stars" deserves five stars.
I read an early edition from Sutro Press, and "Five Stars" is truly a marvelous guide to making your dreams a reality, without any film school snobbery to weigh it down. The book surveys all the stuff you need to know to write credibly about movies, coaches you through the writing process, and even provides excellent tips on how to get your words published.
The author is a web entrepreneur, a seasoned magazine editor, and even a novelist, so he really knows what he's writing about, and that really comes through in the book. Whether you want to pursue film review as a career or even as an occasional hobby, or you just want to go see a lot of new movies and DVDs for free, this book is a fabulous way to start.

Customer Reviews:
The Ultimate music book.......2006-06-22
The Suzuki books are absolutely great! I have tried using many other books to learn the viola, but I can tell this one is the best I've seen! It contains a mixture of great songs for playing as well as exercises according to your level and teaches you in a very comprehensive order. The creators of this book have chosen a very good selection of songs that always are just at the right level. Then, after every song or two, it will have an excerise to help you progess to the harder songs to come in the book. Highly reccommended!

Book Description
A Hail of Bullets and a Cloud of Gun Smoke
The ability to cause harm in the World of Darkness doesn't belong solely to the fiends of the night. Humanity is quite capable of innovating its own forms of violence. This book depicts a variety of those weapons, from an improvised skillet to the latest in sniper technologies.
A Character Book for all World of Darkness® Games
A comprehensive and descriptive "weapons locker" with game statistics for hundreds of weapons and equipment
Includes details on firearms, melee weapons, tactical weapons, vehicles and other equipment
Offers optional, additional rules for adding complexity and tactics to a World of Darkness game
More than just weapon tables--includes information on international weapon laws, weapon use and safety, and black markets
Usable with any World of Darkness game, including Vampire, Werewolf and Mage
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for weapon enthusiasts.......2007-06-25
I was reluctant to get this supplement. My games are not combat heavy or combat focused, but this book does an excellent job of detailing any possibly weapon a player can use in the World of Darkness game. It is also usable in any WoD game such as Vampire the Requiem or Werewolf the Forsaken. It even covers combat merits and maneuvers for developing good cinematic action games. I am very glad to make this book an essential part of my gaming library.
Not your typical equipment book.......2006-09-26
I appreciate most about this book what it does that isn't typical of an equipment guide. It offers legal context for items. It lists common myths about weapons and the truth behind them. It gives results for the often silly and overly cinematic things that the players may try. It offers guidelines on how high a character's skill should be based on background and training, often giving creative means to justify having a score (Weaponry dots justified by playing baseball, for example). Lastly, it doesn't feel the need to provide lists and lists of weapons, rather it encourages the Storyteller to just use the stats of the most similar item provided. Not at all what I expected and I am very happy with it.
Armory delivers new options while keeping the system simple........2006-09-19
Armory presents a wide variety of new weapons, vehicles, and equipment for any World of Darkness game. New fighting styles and other merits add many new combat options for characters, and the discussion of how real world equipment and weapons training works is very helpful. If you want more detail than the World of Darkness corebook offers, or just don't know a lot about guns and weapons, then this is a great product offering enough detail and discussion to flesh out equipment without overwhelming the reader with endless lists of identical weapons.
Just wonderful!.......2006-08-04
If you want weapons for your game, this book is it! Fantastic Book!!!
We got Nukes, Knives, and Sharp Sticks.......2006-02-24
This book is good in some situation, but in not all. It gives the stats, costs and discriptions of a good number of guns, swords, knives, grenades, etc. Plus if you need a different type of vehicle than the generic car, you it lists different types and styles of vehicle, including heicopters and airplanes. I would recommend this book if you have someone in your game group that has to have thi kick @$$ smg, pistol, and armored vehicles. If you don't, save your money and stick with the stats of the guns listed in the World of Darkness core rule book.

Book Description
One of the challenges for computational intelligence and biometrics is to understand how people process and recognize faces and to develop automated and reliable face recognition systems. Biometrics has become the major component in the complex decision making process associated with security applications. The many challenges addressed for face detection and authentication include cluttered environments, occlusion and disguise, temporal changes, robust training and open set testing.
Reliable Face Recognition Methods seeks to comprehensively address the face recognition problem while gaining new insights from complementary fields of endeavor such as neurosciences, statistics, signal and image processing, computer vision, machine learning and data mining. This book examines the evolution of research surrounding the field to date, explores new directions, and offers specific guidance on the most promising venues for future research and development.
Customer Reviews:
much more work needed.......2006-12-29
The problem tackled by this book is buried deep in evolution. It is one of the most basic properties of an organism that it reliably recognise others of its species. For reproduction, if nothing else. Humans have the added twist that facial recognition is important, for the extra reasons that the face is usually hairless and has many expressive muscles.
But the way the mind does its analysis is still largely opaque. By contrast, most of the book's methods look at it via other approaches. Signal processing with many custom features specific to faces. The chapters show impressive current capabilities. However, they also readily indicate the limitations. And suggest possible future improvements.

Book Description
The US graphic design services industry includes about 16,000 companies with combined annual revenue of $8 billion. Major companies are units of large, integrated design firms that provide graphic design services in support of a primary specialty like architectural, environmental, or product design, such as Gensler, ERM Holdings, and IDEO, respectively. The industry consists of privately owned companies and is highly fragmented: the 50 largest firms account for less than 20 percent of total industry revenue. Most firms are small: a typical business has one location, fewer than four employees, and average annual revenue of around $500,000. About 30 percent of graphic designers are self-employed. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Regional economic activity drives demand, because most graphic design firms are small and work locally. The profitability of individual companies depends on accurate bidding, timely delivery of projects, and a steady volume of work. Large companies have advantages in marketing and sales, breadth of services, delivery of complex projects, and supporting ongoing contracts. Small companies can compete effectively by responding quicker, adopting new trends, and specializing by services or markets. The industry is labor-intensive: average annual revenue per employee is around $130,000. Customers and prospects become competitors when they bring design services in-house, rather than use graphic design firms. Freelance designers may be competitors or contract labor. PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY Major industry services are general graphic design, commercial art and illustration, drafting, and photography. General graphic design ...
